Hatta (I just like calling you 'Hatta' lmao): You can say Maddy was ill? Chicken Pox? Something your body needs to get over on its own so you don't get it back later in life as Shingles?
Pneumonia?
And if she did go home, they would just send a senior member of the X-Men like Cannonball or Shadowcat to bring her back safely. That way she could get back into the mansion, even though its on lock down.
