i think he is just distraught because he cannot walk through the portals, so he hasn't been using them to move like he normally would in a fight. his normally dodgy fighting style is ruined by his dependence on communication.

thus the "make a hole for all the students to run through" plan skipped his mind... he will think of it eventually...or not. no one he cares about is in danger, since he teleported neo and raz out of there in the beginning. most of the urgency is gone for him. i don't know. Lukas being there wasn't in the original planning...it was a whim added later. i will have to find a reason to explain why he didn't save everyone later.
