What do you guys think, should piccolo be considered a different instrument, or a kind of flute.

I'm tempted to say that they're two closely related instruments.

I think it should be a different instrument all its own. Yes, one could consider it a member of the flute family, but it's not really a flute per se. Just like the oboe's not really a clarinet. They're just similar-ish.
But don't flutes and piccolos have the same fingerings? They're in the same family and should sit in the same section. My BD wouldn't let anyone play the piccolo unless they could play the flute first.

Oboe is not similar to the clarinet at all. They kind of look alike but that's it! We don't have the same fingerings, we don't even play in the same key...I hate it when people say oboes and clarinets are alike! stressed

Yeah, they do have the same fingerings. I've always described the piccolo as a smaller version of the flute to people who aren't in band... so I guess I think of them as pretty much the same instrument.

Over here you have to know how to play the flute before you play the picc too. The picc isn't even offered until you reach high school.

Wheee...I played piccolo this past year in 8th grade..xp I describe it as a smaller version of the flute too. My first seat clarinet friend said she tried the oboe before and she said the fingerings are slightly similar...0.o

The piccolo is an octive higher than flute and is way smaller. other than that, flutes and picolo's are the same thing. I play both. Same EXACT fingerings for both. The way it should work is that the people in the first, second and third chair positions of the flute section in a smaller band should be able to switch from piccolo to flute when needed. (Give or take a few depending on the size of the flute section) And in Larger band or orchestras you can have that and a separate section for piccolos.

Oh and OBOE AND CLARINET HAVE NO SIMILARITIES WHAT SO EVER. I PLAY OBOE AS WELL!

Piccolos are generally conical shaped, in the bore. Much more so than flutes. Because of this, intonation for certain fingerings differ. Which is why some people swear by alternate fingerings for the piccolo. For better resonance.

Alright, alright, thank you. I've got about six posts pointing out my blaring ignorance.

But thanks. At least I know this before I make an idiot of myself next time. >.<

Why don't we just consider all instruments that are different as different instruments? lol. I mean....bass flutes and alto flutes would be their own instruments too....like E- flat clarinet vs. B-flat clarinet....

I tried playing clarinet and the fingerings are similar but only on a few notes. But the oboe plays in different octaves and in a different key so, the only way they're similar at all is the fingering...they don't look as similar as people think they do...

well that's the thing

flute, alto flute, and bass flute are all on the same scale.

It's just that piccolo is built differently.

KitoYasha I agree with you entirely.

The two flutes bigger than the bass flute are the contraalto (shaped like a big T)
And the contrabass (shaped like a big 4)

Also, I firmly believe oboe is more like saxophone than clarinet
