Fyrin nodded. The anger was gone as quickly as mud washed off of a sidewalk by a flash flood. Respect instead replaced it. "We'll do it. Us six together, perhaps we'll accomplish something," Fyrin replied. Speaking up, he turned to the Ghoster. "We'll take care of the bodies. You guys get underway, we'll catch up." It was a sincere offer, without even so much of a hint of the real purpose behind his voice. Without a visible expression to read, the real purpose behind his speech could never be guessed.

P-90-guy turned to Renard. "So what do you do, other than healin'?" he inquired quietly.

The Ghoster nodded at him. "Good man. All other groups, head out, scout around subtly and don't drop your disguise unless you must. Call for backup if anything happens."

"I'm a biomancer and a kineticist. Healing, form alteration, poison, the like," Renard explained. He held up his hand and bony protrusions formed a gauntlet around it. "This kind of thing. Kinetics, well, everyone knows at least a little of that, but I can do more with it than most. That shadow-dimension comes from an enchantment on old, now-dead friend of mine gave me."

((Random. I was shown this: http://www.fictionpress.com/topic/2759/441260/1/ a form of giving players a somewhat amusing way of influencing the story. How would you guys feel about me integrating this fun little thing into Cabal?))

((Aww, crap in a hat. My stupid internet won't let me open that, can you tell me what it says?))

P-90-guy nodded. "That's pretty cool. Magic integrating with life, harsh kinda stuff. I imagine you can do some pretty harsh things with that magic, eh?" he asked, shifting the submachinegun in his hands.

Fyrin suddenly spoke to Renard. "Did you do a healing spell on the girl the first man carried? She didn't have a head, I didn't see a point in trying to keep her soul around, so if something's gonna go off, don't bother. Oh, that reminds me," he muttered as he bent next to Renard's first victim to pick him up. A little piece of bandaging came up out of the crater in his chest, then burst into flames and disintigrated. "Best not to be calling anyone now that they're already healing," he explained, easily hefting the body into a fireman's carry.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 6:03 am

Renard shook his head as he began to arrange the bodies against a wall with his kinetics. "No head, no brain. If it has a brain, I can bring it back... but no brain means no point in healing."

((And now, for your viewing pleasure...))

While, like most forum games, "The Thing that Cries in the Night" is free-form, I wanted to give the players a bit more control over the narrative while still being the primary controller, myself.

Thus, I would direct everyone interested in this game to look at the website TvTropes.org.

Once per chapter (that is, a thread in which narrative takes place) a player may invoke a trope from this website. However, as the moderator of the game and teller of the story, I am allowed to invert, subvert, play straight, and otherwise play with the trope invoked however I wish.

There are, however, certain limitations, which are as follows:

-If it simply can't be applied (i.e.: Creator tropes, music tropes, truth in television tropes, reality is unrealistic tropes, show business tropes, derivative work tropes, British Telly tropes, etc.) it won't be.

-If it is from the following categories, it will be ignored: Ending Tropes, Character Tropes (Characterization and Characters as Device might be allowable, depending on how they're used), and Subjective Tropes.

-Applied Phlebotinum tropes are not allowed until the characters gain some form of phlebotinum of their own--and even then, players are strongly advised not to use these tropes to give themselves any powers; this will lead to a suitably entertaining and ironic punishment.

-Breaking the fourth wall is strongly discouraged of. It's a load-bearing wall.

-Any player using this to unfairly empower their character (see any of the "Sue" tropes for examples) will be removed from the game.

Note that you are not invoking these tropes for your own characters; the idea is basically the player challenging me to include an element that might or (more likely) might not have been in my story outline. I will play with these tropes to maintain the tone and feel of the story, but it allows you to have more influence on the game than you would otherwise.

When invoking a trope, place it in a parenthetical at the end of your post.

((Opinions on if Cabal should add this?))

((It's interesting, but it seems like it would take quite a bit of time to work it all out. At least for me it would. All the tropes and what not. Seems like a good idea to me though.))

"Just as well," Fyrin muttered sadly. "I wish I could've done more. How much longer until they start waking up?" Fyrin added, propping the broken body of the girl he had killed up against the wall. He crouched next to her, staring at the lifeless face. She didn't look frightened at all; Fyrin had to give her that. He was scared to die. At least he had been.

"Once these guys are back up and running, we've got to get them home safely," Fyrin commented. "Then we can start really hunting for Legion. I hope we're prepared to meet him," he adde finally, still simply staring into the girl's face.

Renard grimaced. "If we even figure out where he is, it's gonna be fortified by vampires. They've got Bloodhounds out the a** here, I imagine."

He snapped his hands towards the line of bodies. The mortal wounds on each of them begin to heal visibly, bones reforming, muscles and tendons reconnecting, skin washing over the wounds to close them. The only one untouched was the first one whose soul Fyrin had trapped.

"All right, got those ones done. Let me do that last one. I didn't start the healing thing until after seeing that soul-trap on the first one. I'll have to do that one manually." Renard crouched over the body and passed his hand over the wounds. A dim glow washed over the wounds, and the same process as happened for the others repeated. "Go ahead and awaken them, it should be safe now."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 11:26 am

"Right. They should know what's going on, or at least be able to hear us..." Fyrin responded. His third eye flicked open, and he could again see the souls, trapped into the until-now inactive minds. Their souls would've continued to see what was happening in the physical plane of existence, so they would hopefully know that Renard, Fyrin, and his compatriots were all friends. Hopefully.

A slight black glow began to emanate from Fyrin's right hand; the hand faded out of existence ever so slightly, becoming translucent. Reaching out, Fyrin touched the girl's head, then slowly the bandages, then his actual hand slid into her head for a split second. When he pulled it free, she awoke with a jolt, scrambling to her feet with absolute shock in her eyes. Fyrin stepped back slightly; he nodded slightly, saying, "We'll get you home. Give me a minute." After a few more seconds, the others awoke, each showing a similar reaction. Some of the children began to cry again immediately; the pair of teenagers related to Fyrin's victim began to check on their family, glancing suspiciously at Fyrin, Renald, and his men, despite having seen what they had.

"I think we should probably take the van, it'll be the least conspicuous way to get all of these kids home," SCAR-man said, glancing behind him. AK74U-man had been watching in that direction the whole time, his reflex sight's dot centered at the end of the corner. Nothing had occured, though; the Ghoster and the rest were gone for now.

Samuel sighed, wiping sweat off his brow. This was difficult, but he thought he had the first incantation down. At the very least, he had the pronunciations necessary down. He chanted the words for the shield spell and looked to the Sage. "How did I do?"

((I'm getting the vibe that this isn't getting me my fix anymore. Can I get an overview on what you want for the second character? What are we looking at there. So far, I've had troubles picking up what the guidelines are. Or are there none? I needs infos, since I not seem to be in the standard PM loop.

Also, that system looks fabulous, but must be adapted to fit, and I don't quite understand what a trope is, or where they're going to come from.))
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 2:50 pm

((I'm with Devath; where did these characters come from? And the tropes could be cool; I'm not in favor of it, necessarily, but I won't be against it. It seems too time-consuming; there are scores/hundreds of tropes, and it would be too hard to have to look one up and define it every time one was used. I think that would take a higher-caliber RP than this one to pull off properly.))

((You have a point, Siber.

And I have a goofy request.

See, as I've already explained to Venom, one day I was drawing. And I drew a rather quick picture of Paul. And it looked good. And then I realized, "gee, that's a small drawing, and I could honestly probably fit every other character in existence somewhere onto this page." The problem? Lacking physical descriptions. I don't wanna ask you to come up with something massive, but for the sake of my fun I would appreciate it if you'd give me something... dinstinctive. Clothing, hair, it doesn't matter.

And what's your "fix", Devath? Are you saying you're getting bored? 'Twould be a shame if you died on us.))
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 4:08 pm

((no, see, i'm not sure who was first on the secondary characters, but what happened for me was that i saw Venom playing like, 50 characters, so i figured i'd offer to help out and take some NPCs. he said no, so i requested making another character, and thus was born Marco.))

Marco led his small team of four (?) into the city. "Spread out and find those demons," he said, waving curtly to his right. Two of his people split off in that direction. The others didn't need to be prompted; they headed to his left, spreading through the streets quickly.
Marco himself walked calmly up the main road, headed for -what else?- the city park.

((Sooooo...Joe and Paul are like, left behind. Remedy?
And my sentiments regarding the tropes are the same as Siber's. maybe with time, just not yet.))

((Uhm... magic? Or some effort. Just at least keep them talking or something until we can find out if we could, for example, have them run into our other groups.

Oh, and Joe, especially you and Siber - drawing your characters is gonna turn out awfully similar. You got something in specific I could use to differentiate them?))
PostPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 5:36 pm

((Oookie... I found the tropes and where they come from, and I'm stupefied as to how to get anything useful out of that place, even after surfing for over three hours.
And yes, I was saying I was getting bored, because of several factors, one of which being the fact that Venom decided to stop interacting with my character. Others may include factors that can be blamed on other characters, however, I should not complain, because without these stallers, I never would have gotten back into the plot, at least with the extra powers arc passing me by... smile
In any case, we should probably get a discussion going on the problems that seem to be cropping up. From my point of view, Venom is losing focus on the big picture. I never tried to grasp said big picture, but we keep making this bigger, and the worse it gets, the more likely someone is gonna get shafted.
As for description, I thought I gave a full visual on initialization. I guess I haven't been keeping up on outfit changes, though. Anime habits... I'll take a look and summarize/expand.))

((Desc: Found 1/2 in profile, 1/2 in first post. Additions have been made.
Tall & slim, approx 6 foot. Three inches of black hair in a pell-mell hairstyle. Decent muscles, nothing overdone. T shirt & Jeans standard uniform, Brown trenchcoat addition for long escapades away from home base and the like, for extra equipment carrying. First post talks about a bunch of gear I totally forgot about... But it looks like he'll be carrying some swords, daggers, and a few small firearms. Prepare for the zombie apocalypse, ya-know. The profile does really fail in image portrayal, though. I usually end up working it in in my first post. I think its on page 12, for reference.))

Joe was about to speak when he felt something nearby. His head whipped up and he looked out the window, although he couldn't tell immediately what was bothering him. On a whim, he sent out a magic pulse.
"What the hell..."
He saw that the area they were in was positively drenched in magic, completely different that when he had scanned it with Takeshi. What was going on?

((you don't have to worry about mine yet, just do Siber's and i'll change mine based on his.))
