Iris looked up with wide eyes and felt as though her heart stopped. Shtona had defeated Kain, and with such ease. Kain had seemed to be such a capable fighter too... How was she going to fare in the sparring match?
I really am unprepared... she thought miserably.
((I don't mind. blaugh ))

Anslia watched in amazement. "So this is alchemy..." she muttered, her imagination already whirring with the possiblities. If she could just learn, and learn well, she could be unstoppable. That would a trick... and unexpected trick.
Her fingers naturally moved to the hilts of her daggers. This would be interesting. Shtona had bested Kain. She looked the headmaster over again. She could still take him...
...she thought.

Shtona stood to his full height and watched Kain walk away without a word, sitting down by his peers. Okay, who next? He looked at the three other students. All girls, but all with different strengths and weaknesses. "Iris...you're next." he called, bending down with a piece of chalk. A few seconds later the sparring grounds turned back to plain dirt; any signs of a fight having taken place, gone.

Iris was sure she would fail. She stood up nervously and obediently went to the spot Kain had been standing. She gave him a weak smile.
"Okay... shall we begin?" she asked Shtona hesitantly. She gently rubbed the small piece of chalk between her fingers.

Anslia's pink-brown eyes seemed to turn purple with her excitement. She couldn't wait to see more alchemy - to figure out how it worked. That chalk - she'd need to get some of that. But now, she would just watch (and hopefully learn a bit.)

"I'll let you start this time..." he said, hoping to give her some form of advantage by giving her the headstart. In alchemy, it's usually the fastest who win. Whether it be the fastest thinker or the one with the fastest hand. He sheathed his sword and waited patiently, fingering his own piece of chalk. He felt it was going to be an interesting match.

"Oh...okay," Iris mumbled. She set her left knee on the ground and leaned to draw a circle with her right hand. Within this circle she drew three circles in the shape of a triangle, as well as an arrow filling the rest of the circle. She pressed her hands down upon the circle, closed her eyes and concentrated... and a faint yellow light pulsated from beneath her hands.
Her face lit up with a smile and she stood up quickly, pulling a long piece of wood along with her. It was just an ordinary piece of... wood. Long and thin, it could be mistaken for a walking stick the elderly used. Iris beamed.
She had not thought she could pass off such a feat.

Shtona grinned and dropped to one knee as well and drew a t-circle, touching his fingers to it. Just like Iris, a wooden pole sprouted from the ground. It grew to about five feet high and stopped, standing on the flat ground on it's own. Shtona left it there, waiting for Iris's next move.

Iris eyed Shtona's wooden pole and bit her lip nervously. She grabbed her wooden stick and slanted it so she could draw a transmutation circle on the bottom.
She flipped the stick quickly so that she could draw another of the same on the other side. Then, Iris banged the end of the wooden stick on the ground hard, and held it down. She closed her eyes and leaned her forehead on the stick. Another flash of yellow light was emitted, and the ground shook just the slightest bit. She opened her eyes and frowned. It had not worked...

He grabbed his staff when the ground shook and held it at his side. "Focus more..." he said, "think of what reactions you are wanting to take place, what chemicals need to be manipulated and in what order. Try again."

Iris nodded at Shtona's advice and once again, banged the stick hard against the ground and put her forehead against it.
She closed her eyes and gripped the stick tight. Once again, a yellow light emitted from the bottom of the stick, and the ground shook ever so slightly. Iris kept her eyes closed and focused on the task at hand. The ground shook once again and Iris opened her eyes and stepped back. A small crack formed in front of her feet, and she looked up triumphantly. Her eyes were shining.
The small crack became slightly larger, and from the dark crevices strange wooden planks shot up, creating a small barrier.
Iris giggled a little bit at her small failure, taking it with good humor. The barrier barely managed to reach her knees. It wouldn't block her, let alone any of Shtona's attacks.

"Good, good job..." He smiled and started toward his student, twirling the stick in his fingers. "Anything else?" he asked, stopping a few feet away from the knee-high barrier, which he was observing intently. Good quality, she just needs more power behind it.

"One more trick," Iris stated as she eyed the space between Shtona and herself. She seemed satisfied with the setting and once again slammed the stick on the ground.
However, this time she held the stick straight and grasped it tight. Rather than leaning her forehead on it, she just closed her eyes and seemed to be concentrating hard.
A few moments later, small dirt spikes about the length of her arm shot up in the ground front in front of Shtona's feet.
"That's... all," she said, taking a breath. Using alchemy was quite demanding. Rather than using the stick as a tool in her alchemy, Iris now used it to help her stand.

Shtona kicked the spikes and nodded, impressed with their solidity. He swiped them away with his staff and took a step, swinging the staff by one end to get a full reach on it. He stopped it next to his students arm and lightly tapped her. "Good job, that's the end of this match. Tomorrow morning after you've rested up you'll begin physical training with me. Do you understand why?"

"Because... I don't have the strength or the stamina to properly use alchemy techniques to full power?" Iris guessed vaguely. She was rather tired, after straining herself in such a demanding way.
However, she was incredibly pleased with herself, for being able to do such a thing. She looked at Shtona for a response.
