Whether or not chewing gum warrants punishment in the band room is not the question. No one does it and no one (generally/hopefully) is mindless enough to try. The "no gum in the band room" thing is just understood. They drilled it in well enough in middle school.

Chewing gum is not allowed. Not because it could ruin the instruments, because its a safety hazard for the students to be in possession of edible items. When I say that, I mean that if someone finds out that someone else has food, they immediately get jumped and their food is taken away and eaten elsewhere. But yeah, we also have to do push ups, adding insult to injury.

It normally goes like this. Bd: Are you chewing gum? Kid: Uh, yes...*is scared* Bd: Did you know, it is o.k to chew gum in this classroom? Kid *is confused* Bd: Oh yeah it's true! But, when you suck that gum down your windpipe and you are suffocating, we are all going to stand and watch while *kid everyone doesn't like* gives you mouth to mouth. Kid: *goes to spit out gum in embarrassment*
Hahahahaha, it's funny Or if it is a percussionist he yells at them and explains that a drummer always have to have a steady sense of rhythm and if they have a different rhythm in their hands, feet, and in their mouth, then it gets to confusing.

Man, our percussionists are ALWAYS chewing gum. They do get in trouble, but not in enough obviously >_<
You never really see any other instruments chewing gum in class except for a few trumpets every now and then

None of us chew gum really. most of us have braces xP the only thing that we're allowed to have in the band room that goes down our throat and into our stomach is water. before, since a lot of the band members didn't have a 1st/2nd period (block-schedule) but we had a 0 period (stupid conselors) our BD opened the band room as a study hall/place to practice. so we'd eat breakfast there then did our HW. He was cool with it until about 2 months ago. he sees us eating and he tells us to go outside and finish it and tells us next ime he sees us eating or chewing gum in the band room he'd give us 5 hours of detentions and push-ups. -.-' not how i'd want to start the day.

The band director will get mad if we are chewing gum while playing, but he didn't say anything in marching band. But our assistant director, really old and cranky guy got mad at a Pit player for chew gum.

We should totally assign fifty push-ups for chewing gum during band! biggrin Both winds and percussionists have been caught with it, but usually it's just "spit it out".
We're not allowed to have food in the band room the rest of this month because people (really the guard and the lazy bandos) would leave trash and food EVERYWHERE. ><

I don't chew gum, but the tenor saxs, percussion, and one of the clarinets always get caught and are force to swallow it. Yuck. But it's totally there fault. :]
