Demare didn't hear her. He was already fixated on the gargoyle, eyes narrowed down into a glaring squint. How DARE that thing attack her...
"I think it's time we end this," he hissed, the seals on his left arm beginning to glow a little bit. Raising his arm with ease, a ball of light began to form in the palm of his hand. Perhaps this was borrowed strength...
"SIT!" he barked, a bright flash filling the room for only a brief moment. When it was gone, the gargoyle was stunned, stiff and partially turned to stone from the brilliant light. This would allow just enough time for them to escape, the halfling figured. Everyone should have been out of the cathedral by now.
Standing, the boy began to make his way toward the left side of the room, clenching a fist tightly.
"Mayu... wait for me outside," he ordered instead of asked, hoping she would simply comply. His eyes began to glow a little bit, the two red eyes above the right opening fully. So long as she was safe, nothing else mattered to him.

Mayu gulped, nodding. She had caught her breath enough so that she didn't need a support any more, though kept one hand on the side of the wall as she made her way down the room quickly and outside the large doors where a nun led her away quickly from the building, anticipating what was going to happen. She joined the man with the bleeding leg and the still hyperventilating priest shortly, leaning against a tree as she watched the cathedral from far away.
"Idiot," she muttered, though her face was frozen in a frown, anxious to see the outcome of the fight. She crossed her fingers that Demare would make it out okay, though was a bit afraid to watch to see who would emerge from the doors of the cathedral before the imminent collapse.

You could have just asked for help, you know.
Shut up.
I'm just saying. Most of this could have been prevented.
I said shut up.
It's your fault she got hurt.
Just SHUT UP.
You know what they'll think of you once you do this.
I'm already a monster, no thanks to you.
Owch... Harsh.
Like you ******** care.
Demare stopped in front of the pillar at the farthest end, eyeing the main enterance for a moment to make sure he'd have enough time. It would be fine... If anything, he's strain himself further and try to fly his way out. Either way, everything would turn out just... fine.
So long as he told himself that, it would be true... right?
Putting all his weight forward, the child began to push the pillar with his shoulder, planting his feet on the wall behind him as he tried to shove it loose. He groaned against the stone, sweat trickling down from his brow as he refused to give up.
The gargoyle, coming to, hissed and cried at the legend, still trying to gain mobility in its legs as they slowly began to return to flesh. Picking up one of the larger rocks, it threw it at the child, frustrated with how pesky its breakfast was being. HARDLY even worth it anymore!
Demare was barely able to duck around the corner inbetween the wall and the pillar, the boulder shattering against the stone and breaking off some of the pieces. YES! That's JUST what he'd needed!
Pushing at it with a little more ease, he managed to shove the column loose, it slowly crumbling and falling downward toward the next one in line. Perfect! Immediately, the halfling bolted toward the door, racing the brick and stone to the end, dodging parts of the roof that was beginning to fall to the ground. Just before the door could jam, he threw himself into the air, gliding out the door...
...and riding the forceful wind even further as the cathedral just seemed to fall apart. The boy crash landed with a few rolls into the ground a ways from the wreckage, completely exhausted from straining his body so much. Crap... how was he going to explain this to Neko? Breathing heavily, he lifted a hand to his chest, frantically grasping onto all three of his pendants, mostly to make sure they were still there. Maybe they were some sort of strange good luck charms... getting him into horrible situations, but getting him out alive.

Mayu had her hands over her eyes, not wanting to watch the collapse of the cathedral in fear of who would make it out alive. A nun tapped her on the shoulder gently, and she opened up a small slit between her fingers, eyes tentatively searching the entrance.
Seeing Demare out safe and sound, Mayu pushed herself up, first stumbling forward and then breaking out into a full run, pushing back the nuns who tried to stop her. She dropped to her knees once she reached the boy, running a hand through his hair as she looked down at him from above.
"...Are you hungry?" she asked, looking up to the sky which was gradually becoming darker as the sun slipped farther and farther away. The moon shone bright overhead, and streetlights were beginning to flicker on as onlookers gathered to view the damage.

I'm guessing you want me out, huh?
Actually... no.
...What?
It's your turn to suffer this time.
You... SON OF A b***h.
His body was shaking again, trembling as he tried to relax. He stared up at Mayu as she approached him, unable to react to her touch at the moment. He snickered and laughed, however, despite how painful it was, when she asked if he was hungry. She was too much... Just so damn cute.
"Very..." Demare managed to get out, a few tears escaping his eyes against his will, his head nuzzling her hand a little bit. "But... I can't exactly move quite yet... Can we rest for a little while...?"
His shakey left hand released the pendants resting on his chest, wishing to take hold of hers.

"Yeah, let's rest," Mayu sighed, "and then let's get some dinner. I'm hungry too."
She moved her hand from his hair to grab hold of his hand, noticing the bandages around her arms which he had wrapped before. She slipped her hand out of his for a moment, moving quickly to unwrap the clean bandages. Within a minute or two, she had a large pile of unwrapped bandages on her lap, and she waved over a nun to help as she messily rewrapped the bandages around the large wound on his chest.
"I think that should do it," she said, "but there's none left for your arm."

Demare blinked a few times, having not really noticed the fact that the wound on his front had even opened. The only one he'd seen was his arm, but perhaps that was also because his entire body was sore. Turning his head, he lifted his right arm a little bit.
"My arm will heal much faster... so this should be good enough," he said, slowly trying to unwrap the dirty, bloody bandage. He never really did understand why it got like that. It was as if the demon blood itself destroyed it upon contact. "Thank you..."
Already tired, he stopped for a moment, leaning back to lay down again, swallowing hard. After a moment, he turned his eyes to Mayu's hand, his brow knitting together a little bit in worry. "How's your hand?"

Mayu nodded, then looked to her hand. Small red dots of blood had appeared on the bandages, growing slowly as the cut continued to bleed, but at a much slower pace.
"It's fine," she said, nodding to reassure him. "I don't think any pieces of glass would have gotten in the cut either, so it's fine."
The sounds of ambulance sirens could be heard in the distance, after being phoned by several bystanders who had noticed the injured people resting near the now-collapsed cathedral. The white vehicle slowly pulled up near the grassy area, medics coming out with emergency kits to treat all who were injured.
"Perfect timing," Mayu muttered, watching the men in white wheel away the acolyte. Another approached to inspect Demare's wounds, a roll of bandages and disinfectants already in hand.

Noticing the men in white starting to approach, the halfling struggled to move again, but failed miserably. His muscles simply gave way at each attempt, forcably telling him that he needed to cool it for a while, needing more rest than that.
This was NOT good timing for him...
"I don't need their help," he said quietly to Mayu, trying to turn away from them. "Please... send them away... Tell them I'll be fine, I was taken care of."
It wouldn't do them any good, anyway. Medicines from this world did pretty much nothing for him, as Domonic quickly found out that first time his bandages were ever removed. Even the man's white magic did nothing; Judgement had created this body, and they were the only other ones that could heal it aside from himself. Those bastards...

Mayu watched for a moment, face drenched in worry. She nodded at his words, knowing that he would have at least some good reason for not accepting medical help even though it looked as though he desperately needed it.
"Please go away," she said, looking up to the paramedics who were approaching. "He's fine. We don't need any more treatment..."
"Are you insane, miss?"
The men in white gawked at her for a moment in disbelief, continuing to approach the children.
"You both are visibly wounded, and your friend here needs treatment the most out of all the injured people."
One man moved over to examine Demare's wounds, and another to look at Mayu's hand.
"Please go away!" the girl exclaimed, moving back from Demare slightly to hop up in place, knocking back the man who had been examining the cut on her hand. "We're fine, we don't need any more treatment."
The paramedics grumbled a bit, finally deciding to back off. They would get an earful from the hospital director for leaving two kids like that, but it couldn't be helped if they kept denying treatment in a forceful fashion like the girl had done. They walked slowly back to their car, where the acolyte had already been wheeled in.
Idly, Mayu wondered if that was really a wise thing to do. She looked down to Demare once more, giving a small nod before sitting back down besides him.
"They're gone now," she said, watching the vehicle roll off towards the hospital. "So what do we do?"

Demare winced a little bit, feeling a little bad for making her do that, but what other choice did he have? They could do this by themselves... So long as he kept telling himself that, maybe it would be true.
"I just... n-need to rest..." he sighed, closing his eyes for a moment. "I overestimated things... quite a bit. I'll be fine, but my body needs to recover. I'll fix your hand, too."
He grew quiet for a long moment as he stared up at the sky, watching as the stars seemed to just multiply. Why did this always seem to happen? Why did trouble follow wherever he was, and get the people he cared about caught up in the middle? It was as if he were a magnet for chaos... and someone else always ended up getting hurt.
"I'm sorry... I always seem to get you in trouble..."

"My hand will be fine," Mayu laughed, "It's you I'm more worried about."
Her smile fell slightly, watching the clergymen in the near distance beginning to rise to assess the damage done to the cathedral. The onlookers behind the large wrought-iron gates which enclosed the area of the holy building had begun to scatter, getting quite bored after the initial excitement of seeing the building collapse.
"But it's kind of fun, isn't it?" the child mused, still staring off into the distance. "Being well all the time is just... boring."
A firefly flittered past, touching Mayu's nose before flying off again. More followed, slightly illuminating the night sky with their gentle glow.
"The fireflies are out again," Mayu laughed, thinking back to the night of their first meeting. Yes, if it wasn't for the trouble they encountered so often, their meetings wouldn't have been nearly as fun.

"I guess you're right," the halfling agreed, not sure if it was completely true or not. "But... I'm just worried about things getting out of hand."
He watched the fireflies for a moment, blushing slightly. They made Mayu glow a little bit, making her look like some sort of goddess fallen from the heavens. There were times in which Demare felt he wasn't worthy of being her friend, muchless one to recieve her affections, but then there were more times in which he felt extremely lucky and overwhelmed with joy. This was one of those times.
"If I were able to move... I would dance with you into the dead of night..." My little Nature Goddess...

"We always manage to work things out somehow, don't we?"
Mayu wrinkled her nose as another firefly landed upon it, resting for a moment before flying off again. She reached up one hand to swat at them gently, laughing as she fell back into the grass to watch them flutter above her.
She blushed, looking over to Demare. "That sounds nice," she replied, followed by a low gurgle from her stomach. "...though I think my body wants some food first." She laughed again, resting her head upon her arms as she watched the glowing insects streak across the sky.

He couldn't help but laugh a little bit, grabbing at his stomach in pain. Turning his head to look at her, his cheeks still pink with blush, he held up a pinky.
"Let's make a promise, then," he suggested, "before I try to get up again."
"If we're gonna get in real trouble, we'll do it together."
It was stupid, he knew. It's not like they could control something like that, but maybe... just maybe it would help them get through the harder things in life. Just having that feeling that one wasn't alone usually turned even the worst situation slightly better.
"Then we'll always be able to get out of a pinch."
