Randee and Leah wandered through forest until they saw a two-legger in the distance. Leah growled quietly from a distance, ready to attack her new prey.
"No," whispered Randee quietly. "Don't."
Randee walked a little closer to the two-legger to see that the two-legger's skin was much more pale than the other two-leggers around.
"I heard other Soquilis talking about these people," whispered Randee. "They are dangerous." "Then we should attack and protect ourselves," suggested Leah. "No, too dangerous for even you, Leah," said Randee. "We should go find Nashota and stay with her. For protection."
Randee and Leah nodded and then rushed off to the clearing to Nashota.
---
Nashota smiled as her two best friends rushed towards her.
"Hello," she said, rubbing Randee's mane. Nashota kneeled down and began to gently play with Leah. Leah played happily, but Randee remained calm and alert.
"Randee? What's the matter?" asked Nashota, settling down. She sensed that there may be danger and quickly grabbed the thunder-stick she had stolen from the pale-faces.
"Let's head to the tribe quick," said Nashota urgently, rushing back to the village, followed by Randee and Leah.

Two Willows awoke to the sound of the little spring trickling down the side of the entry way into the cave. Remembering things from the day before and the seperation of ways she hoped her new found friend and her Soquili would be safe. She had not wanted to stay in the cave and Two had been relunctant to bring her.Not wanting to allow many to know the location of the almost hidden abode. Sometimes in the spring with the snow melt the cave was all but hidden. Now with the slow trickle from the spring the coarse growth around the entry way concealed the cave. You had to know what you were looking for to find it.Her light foot steps and those of Cahleha were concealed enough by the rock which paved the way into the cave. Indeed the cave was perfect.A hole in the big granite rock with a spring, too! She had placed the pack containing the tipi and other gathered things from the river and the village with her stores of baskets and clay jars. These had belonged to her parents. Now she kept them for thier return. Chaleha woke and whickerd to her, rising she joined Two at the door, nuzzling her a good morning.Together they watched the sun rise, and Two's thoughts went to the new comers on the shore. Chaleha shook her mane nervously at this change in her compainions demeanor.

As the day passed Two went into the place in the cave where the weapons were stored. She already carried a utility knife thinking it would be for cutting brush back,ot help removing some of the more stubborn tubers. Still looking at the bow and arrows, and their quivers,Tow suddenly felt a little apprhension. It had been a long time since she has practiced with the bow, looking in the box she found her dad's old sling. His new one he had taken with him. They were only going to be gone for two days. She remembered, they had left her to turn the fish drying in the sun. She could hear her mother singing the little sing song. She clutched the sling to her heart.A silent vow was made and she went out of the cave to gather stones to use as projectiles for the sling. The last time she had used the sling had been back in the winter,to kill the rabbit.A much needed meal that had been. She wandered around gathering the stones as Chaleha grazed while watching her. Chaleha seemed to pick up on something from her compainion. Some thing unsettling so she watched her for any sign of going off in a direction.Time had come and the mare knew it well,to keep her eye on her friend.Lest she lose her.

Evening had sat up in a tree most of the night and noticed that the cutting of the trees had slowed down after the day before. Everyone seemed to be tiring hard at work trimming down what they had hauled towards a central base. She watched the Soquili labor hard, pulling some of the bigger trees, their cries echoing out when something was too much for them.
It hurt her deeply to see this happening, but she knew that they couldn't see her or she would be dead. She wanted to cut away the leather and metal from the animals and let them run free, but she stayed put in the tree, just watching for now.
Men seemed to be digging into the earth, ripping up the lush green of the plains. Some of the logs were standing upright, like how they had when they were growing, but they lacked the greeness of their leaves and seemed hollow to the look. What was there now was starting to appear as a wall. Why would they need a wall? Did they know of the Kawani or had they heard the same rumors of evil spirits and demons roaming the lands?

Vibrant Shades of Death in an odd twist could be seen around the village watching the two-leggeds. He was confused about the smoke and loud cracks that made the air rumble and thought maybe the dark two-leggeds would know what was going on.
The large stallion wasn't hard to spot with his sparkling coat and colorful mane and tail. At night one could see the glow form his eyes as he paced back and forth outside the village his hooves silent ... ghostly.

The big red mare was excited. She pranced with her mane flowing up,and her tail was blazing about behind her. She was watching the girl,TwoWillows, her companion gathering things for a long journey. Two was nervous and indesisive.Placing things back from where she picked them up.Chaleha stopped and tested the breeze billowing up from the valley below. The smell was smoke, and strangers. She snorted trying to blow the fearsome odor from her nose. Soon the darkness had come to the cave and Chaleha went to her straw bed and lay down. She knew Two would be laying down soon herself. On the mountain one simply did not go about the mountain safely.Unless it was a bright full moon, and not even then without a torch.Tonight was a night of rest, not lighting the torches for all to see. Chaleha looked up as Two settled onto her mat and pulled the hide blanket over her.She began to sing a little song,Chaleha did not know the words but she liked the soothing voice. Both went to sleep watching the dying embers of the fire in the floor pit. Tomorrow would be a busy day.

The day was coming to an end and she saw that they had put up about 1/8th of an enclosing wall. All the pale-faces were going inside the large fish it seemed to sleep, though there were people on it's outer skin, walking along who seemed to be looking out at the shoreline. She was still puzzled by their defensive nature. If anything, the Kawani should be on the defensive.
The moon slowly moved across the star-blanket sky and when it was high, the half moon orb gave her enough light to move from her spot within the trees. She wanted to know what they had planning and why they thought that spot was a good place to build a wall around. Maybe, they were protecting something everyone else had missed.
She stepped lightly with the balls of her toes, being sure to leave only half a footprint in the ground if they decided to track her down. A few bushes were still standing that had not been plowed over by pulling fallen logs and general digging. Soon, she was standing near the massive portion of the wall, it's height almost equal to that of the former trees the logs still represented. The tops were cut into a point. Why? Did they fear that something would attack from the above?
She peeked to what she assumed was the center and saw bits of string floating above the ground with stakes in the ground. It seemed as though they were mapping something out. But what would they want to be mapping out?
A blast rang out from a thunderstick aboard the fish and she quickly turned and fled the scene. She had been spotted, how foolish of her to be. She ran straight into the woods and curved around to lose anyone if they followed her tracks. She was a few yards down from where she had first roosted and climbed another tree to watch and wait for morning.

The first of the dawn birds began their shrill address of the morning.Chaleha perked an ear, resting until she heard her companion moving. Then she rose up on her strong red legs and shook herself awake. Two offered her a bowl of seeds and grains. This morning there were carrot chunks in there.Only a few moments with the utility knife had produced a fine breakfast for the young mare. Two started a small cook fire and placed a fired clay cooking bowl on the cooking stone.Pouring the water in she busied herself gathering the packs and placing them by the opening.Pulling back the hide covering, she went out to the spring. Chaleha finished the last of her grains and followed munching on a carrot chunk. Two splashed in the water as it trickled off the top of the rock ledge. There was it's source,it sprang right out of the rock.Crystal clear and very pure.Sparkling clean and it tasted good.Chaleha went a few paces down to where it pooled and cooled her feet. Two returned to the cooking and placed some of the grains and seed tops into the water.Chopping some apple,(of which most went to Chaleha),she produced eventually a porridge. The dawn broke brightly onto the side of the mountain warming the cave with it's brillance.

The trail down the mountain was slow and adorous. It took longer because they would stop every so often to listen.Chaleha could smell the new comers getting closer. She snorted and pulled her ears back, this Two made note of.The closer they came to the newcomers and their great water beasts, the more Chaleha would act up.Sometimes kicking at the air, with her ears pinned to her head, others snorting and nickering nervously. At all times she was very close to her companion,as if she were afraid of losing her.Indeed there had been days when the red mare had wandered off and Two had no idea where she went or anything much about it.Though a couple of times she had found her in the company of other Soquili. The trip down the mountain had been very harrowing.Emotions had run high as both the Soquili and her two legger had been thinking of the events of the last several days. They had come to the foot of the mountain and took the trail towards the village.

It didn't seem that the pale-faces would be venturing too far from their nest they were building. In a way, they reminded her of how her people had been, but nothing as destructive as what these white demons were doing. Did they really have to be that extravagant as the tree wall?
When she had stood near it, she felt like she was next to a cliff that rose high above her. And the way they put them in the ground amazed her, even if it was cruel to the Soquili they had brought with them. They would dig into the earth itself, the logs having points at both ends. When it was deep enough, they would then start to shovel the dirt back in after the logs were in place, banded together with ropes, and have the Soquili pull them until they were mostly upright. And then the men would scramble to have the entire hole filled with the dirt they had labored to dig out, and even had it mound around at the base.
The process was even fast because it seemed all the people who lived within the large wooden fish was working on different sections at different time. "Why, I'm sure they'll have their tree wall completed in a few days," she thought to herself.
But they would not have to worry about anyone coming to the village until the place was completed or in the process of being completed. There was little point for her to be keeping watch since they would come when they were ready.
With that thought, she slipped out of the tree she had been in most of the night and day. None of the pale-faces looked in her direction she noticed as she remained crouched low to the ground from her landing. That was good. She turned her back to the clear area and moved further into the woods, back towards the village.

Chaleha could think of several reasons not to go into the village, she just could not make Two understand them.To her relief it was not going into the village, that had been on Two's mind. They skirted around the native encampment. There had not been alot of going into the village before,so there would be no going into the village proper tonight. Chaleha was glad,it seemed the village would be sought by the new comers and they did not seem very nice.Taking what they wanted weather it be their's or not. And she shuddered to think of one of them on her back, yanking her head in directions she did not want to go,with those shiney things in her mouth, and those long cords holding her against her will.Making the big noise and killing her friends. She laid her ears back at the thought. Two studied the village from the vantage of the tree.Climbing up onto the branch. Here she had met a couple of wood orphans like herself. This had been her sometimes home before finding the basket and gaining the friendship of Chaleha.Looking down she knew that if she could Chaleha would climb up there with her. She watched the village for a bit, still far away from it.With a sigh she climbed down and began the trek to the ocean. She wanted to see what had been happening there. Chaleha followed, she too wanted to see what was going on there.
