"Flies?" he asked, confused. "There weren't any flies..."

At least he knew what was wrong with her now. She'd changed. Happened to everyone. Maybe she still had a fever. He reached his right hand over and put it against her now blue forehead as lightly as he could. The skin underneath felt slightly hot under his fingers. He drew away just as quickly, fearing that he might be hurting her.

The delerious ranting was making him scared. He couldn't understand her. All he'd seen was her changing. There were no flies, especially not any color-eating ones. If it was some kind of code or allusion, he had absolutely no idea what it meant. He glanced at the cold water bottle in his left hand. "Um... what flies, Kaveri?"

"White feathers? I don't think it means anything. You're becoming a bird though. I think that's it. Um... uh... maybe a dove... I'm not sure... we can ask if you want." So much for swearing off the intercom. He looked at her hands and feet, worried. There was practically no sign they'd ever been human at all. "Are you feeling sick at all? I really think I should get you back to your duplex... can you, uh... stand?"

"You didn't see de flies?" Kaveri asked, confused. She could now think a bit clearer, but she felt those flies - as well as tasted them, heard them, smelled them... She knew they were real. "Dey were black like oil and melted into my hands. Dey were all over me..."

She shook her head. She was still quite visibly afraid, but the panic was starting to wear off. "A bird," the woman repeated, blearily lifting her head and trying to move her fingers -- it was strange, all but her index fingers and thumbs felt completely immobile and inflexible. She slowly sat up, finally getting a look at her new, not-very-improved, and even more deformed hands. Her silver eyes narrowed on the sight of the hand she held out in front of her, staring at its 'palm' as she tapped her two remaining fingertips together, the talons clicking against each other.

"Dis is ******** wonderful," she frowned. "Did dose lab guys hate my music dat much?"

Kaveri shifted in place, trying to stand on her oddly-shaped feet. It was very clumsy, to say the least, and the new placement of her big toe was not helping anything. She held out her arms for balance, feeling very woozy and getting a head rush as she got up. She had the vaguest sense of nausea from recovering from the panic attack, but otherwise felt rather healthy, tiredness and anxiety aside.

"I feel like a mountain of horse s**t," she said, then sat back down and crossed her legs. "As for standing, dat depends on how long I can keep myself up."

"N-no... there weren't any. Maybe you were, uh, imagining them?" He grappled with the water bottle. Should he hold her hand? Was that even possible without hurting both of them? The idea was quickly abandoned. He moved backward to give her more space to get up. "Must have," he mumbled darkly. It was hard to put anything past the sick sense of humor belonging to the people in the laboratory.

"Whoah!" He reached out and put his hands on the back of her shoulders to keep her from falling. "You know, You're the first person becoming a bird I've seen... maybe the only one on the island," he remarked. Whether the statement would make her feel worse hadn't occured to him. Kaveri was the only person on the whole island he really trusted, the only human contact he sought out on a regular basis. He was just relieved to see she'd survived the changes.

"I don't blame you..." After a lengthy pause, he made to snap his fingers, but the sharp point of his thumb dug into his finger and he abandoned the effort. "Maybe I should get you a- a stick or something. It'll keep you balanced. Er... just wait here." The edge of the jungle was close by, and he disappeared into the thick foliage.

Twenty minutes later he returned, hefting a tall, sturdy branch. It looked like it had been lying in the jungle dirt for a while. The makeshift walking stick was gently put down in front of her. Zach wiped his sweat-drenched forehead. The hot weather was unbearable. Even in the shade it was immensely humid. Not being able to sweat from over half his body was making the heat even worse for him.

"Dat's reassuring," Kaveri frowned, carefully scratching behind where her ear once was. "Let's be careful from now on, I don't wanna be shitting out eggs or anyting." The vulture-woman shuddered at the thought. She thought that childbirth in and of itself was fairly nasty, but laying an egg was probably so much more painful to deal with. At least the baby would be soft in comparison.

She put her former hands on her knees, patiently waiting for Zach to return. Kaveri was in no condition to leave the spot where she sat -- or rather, she was in fairly good condition, she just didn't want to move. She just looked down at the monstrous, spiny pinfeathers that protruded from her forearms, testing what little flexibility they had left.

As the stick was presented to her, she shifted to her knees and picked the object up, holding it in both 'hands' before hoisting herself up and dusting some old dirt off one side of the stick. "Tanks," she smiled, nodding her dark head. Kaveri shifted her footing to get some semblance of balance, leaning on the stick while gingerly stepping over the garden fence.

Those poor plants have taken enough of a beating already.

"Y-you're, uh, welcome..." Admittedly he couldn't take his eyes off of her. He was past the The sense of disbelief was familiar. Even with the same voice, the same talk, and the same mannerisms, it was difficult to really feel that this blue-faced bird of a woman was the same Kaveri. He retreated a little to give her room to stand up, his expression curious but slightly confused.

Zach followed her at a slow pace. It gave him more time to really look at what she'd become, unclouded by his blinding panic. She was... different. Distinctly alien in her appearance. Nothing about her gave him a semblance of a hint as to what sort of bird she was becoming. For her sanity, he silently hoped she would never look in another reflective surface again.

Chances are, Kaveri wouldn't want to see what she's become. She can't be blamed for it, and if those hideous, spiny wings were any indication, she probably wouldn't like the rest of what she's become. "I kinda... wanna lay down," she said blearily, hobbling off in the direction of her duplex.

Later on, she'll probably want to whitewash her mirror after seeing her reflection.

But for now, rest first and figure out what she is later. Those white feathers... maybe she's becoming a swan?

Identity crisis

What the hell am I, anyways?

Kaveri paced her room, dragging her hand along the wall. Since seeing her reflection, she hadn't been very inclined to leave her duplex beyond snagging some food from the cafeteria these days. Her physical change brought a dietary one as well, and something that disagreed with her personally chosen diet.

It's hard to be vegan when your food refuses to be digested most of the time, so you have to resort to eating the worst of the worst - meat.

The vulture-woman gave an irritated grunt, and if she had fists, she would be punching the wall about now. She grabbed up her walking stick and clumsily hobbled up to the intercom, using her only finger to press the 0 button.

Moreau took notice of the blinking light on his phone console in his office. He buzzed the front office. "I'll take this one." Moreau always had fun with subjects asked what they were.

He tapped his fingers trying to figure out exactly what he was going to tell her... he then tapped them over the console, after he'd let it ring for far too long.

"Yes Ms. Porter?" he said to her with his smoothest voice.

A series of annoyed clicks growled from the back of Kaveri's throat as she waited for the phone to be picked up. Maybe it was just a really busy day at the labs. Her head lifted a bit upon finally hearing a vaguely familiar voice answer her call.

"Hey man," Kaveri croaked, "Ya busy or anyting? I wanna ask you someting."

"I'm always busy Ms. Porter... always. But I might be able to spare a moment of my time for you?" Moreau attempted to sound sincere.

"How may I assist you?" his voice showed his smile once again.

"I shouldn't keep you for too long," Kaveri says, although there was upset evident in her voice. "But I would really like to know... what da hell am I becoming? Someding a little more specific dan just a bird... what kind of bird?"

"My dear, your serum was hand selected by me. I recieved the photographs of you before you arrived. Read a little bit about you and knew I had to find the most perfect bird for you..." Moreau grinned on the other side of the intercom. He was supressing a snicker though.

"Is dat so?" Kaveri asked, squinting her silver eyes critically. A 'most perfect bird' -- but as far as she was concerned, she was no swan. Hell, she was probably an ugly duckling at best -- an ugly duckling that fell out of its nest in the ugly tree and got hit by every single branch on the way down. "I am probably going to regret asking, but what is dis 'most perfect bird' dat you hand-picked just for me?"
