6. Unfortunately, there are parts of the animal's anatomy that you just have to look at, to eliminate all possibilities. The animal doesn't seem pleased, though, and the examination unfortunately produces no results for you this time. -2 HP

5. Something you did sets the animal off immediately, and it lashes out at you surprisingly violently in reaction. Perhaps that's a sign of what went wrong here, though. +1 clue, -3 HP

Task 3Keeper grimaced; there should have been no traps here. But before he could contemplate this further, the thoughtling struggled to escape his grasp; at the same moment, he heard an exhale behind him.
He turned, on his feet in a flash, only to be met by the sight of a bristling black bear. It stood on its hind legs, its head so high Keeper could not even make out its eyes. His knees buckled—how could anyone fight such a creature?—but the thoughtling had hidden beneath its root again, and he knew he could not leave it. The bear swiped, sending Keeper flying with ease. He tumbled to a stop, crashing into one of the broken trees, and he could barely see as he tried to rise. He realized he was bleeding and that that was what clouded his vision, but the thought was pushed aside when a second cuff sent his ears ringing.
The two struggled for some time, Keeper kicking and biting when permitted, but more often thrashed senseless by its bulky paws. Inevitably, it knocked him down for the final time, his neck pinned beneath its claws. He could feel its warm breath, hear its slaver as it dripped against the leaves, saw the heavy gums—but just before its jaws could close around him, it disappeared.OOC Footnote Current HP: 19 - 2 = 17/30 Current Trust: 15 Section notes: Intruder HP: 2 - 4 = 0/10

Task 4Keeper stayed where he lay, quivering. He wished he could have said he was brave, but in truth he could not even remember the reason he was here until the thoughtling pressed against his cheek. It nibbled at his fur, grooming the short hairs like it might its own feathers, and this finally prompted him to rise.
"We should go," he said, unable to help the catch in his voice. "Before it comes back."

The carnage did not dissipate as they continued, however. On the contrary, they were nearly consistent. He quickened his steps, but he knew what he'd find, and his sight confirmed it: the pool in the center of their sanctum ran red, fueled by the corpses at its lip.

They wandered aimlessly for a time, Keeper unwilling to leave the territory despite knowing it was no longer the haven it had once been. The thoughtling had faltered midway, and Keeper carried it on his back now. If it disapproved of Keeper's fruitless circuits, or at the no doubt uncomfortable rocking of his back as he limped, it made no sign.

The thoughtling's shaking grew stronger, though it made no sound. Keeper paused momentarily, curling into a circle and letting it warm in the pocket at his center.
