Living today without a way
To understand the weight of the world

Temples to the gods. That would help cement the loyalty of the people faster than mere words would. She breathed a little, surprised for a moment that she had been holding her breath in the first place.

Write out three thousand? "What would I use three-"

She turned her eyes to the paper in question and as she read, she lost her trail of thought. She read it once. Then even in reading it again, she started a third time. Had she read this correctly? What did it mean? Why now of all times? But then again...

She picked up the paper. It wasn't that she doubted her eyesight. She must have read what she thought she did. Perhaps it was simply because this little section of words, this poem, was not too closely attached to business. The words tumbled in her mind. She cleared her throat and tried to ask the question she didn't finish.

"What would I use the three thousand for?"

"What for!" balked the count teasingly. "That's not the question you should be asking. You know you need every cent. Now, what's all this apprehension? Use this to make our country just a little bit better. It would go to waste with my budgeting skills..." He couldn't help laughing. The count gave his jacket a final straightening tug, coming to look once more out the window.

"I've always wondered what it would be like to put my trust in somebody," he said to no one in particular. "All my life I've been surrounded by idiots. You, Youkimi, you're something else. My better. I know I can trust you to do things with a few credits that I could never accomplish... --that's not all, I hope you know," he finally gave a half-turn. "I'm not different than the others after all; watch them look up to you, Youkimi, and when I can, I'll be there to help--you still need a strong arm, I reckon."

At this, the phoenix began to change, feather by feather. "Tomorrow's Ethe," he whispered, "is waiting." And just like that, he was gone. A sharp yellow streak against the slate of night encroaching beneath the silvery warden.

Then there was his case. He was right, every bit of coin was needed to help Ethe, and she already could think of ways to put the coin to use. But this seemed secondary to what he shared with her and what he said. She listened to it through the lens of the poem in her hand.

Then, almost miraculously, she found something else to give her hope. Whether or not it was more than words was inconsequential. At least, in the moment this was the case. But these things she did know for certain. Dixon was fighting hard for his people. For Ethe.

Yes, that was an encouraging thought indeed. She folded the paper and tucked it away for safekeeping, to be referred back to if necessary. She took up her tea and spent a few moments in silent contemplation as she drank through its contents. As the day before, many things had happened. The word of the princess, the plans of the count, and this stranger... Lord Xerseis offering surprising support.

Who was this lord?

Dixon trusted him, yes.... She shook her head slowly and set down her empty teacup. She thanked the servants for bringing it and then excused herself from the room. She wanted to check once more on the queen before turning to bed for the night.

She approached the door and cautiously knocked on it. The queen might have been asleep. If this was the case, she would not bother the poor woman further. Sleep, true and deep sleep, was rare and hard to come by some days.

"Are you awake, lady Ophelia?"

When the baroness returned to the palace, she directed the servants to prepare a space for the count and to call for a surgeon to tend to the wounds he had sustained. She instructed them simply with the knowledge that he had been injured while out with her. They had gone to see their goddess and rested for a spell in the petrified city of Ashon, and there, a fight ensued.

She could not bring herself to answer any further details. But as the servants moved about, as they began to talk as she knew they would, she also politely asked for as many paper and floating lanterns to be brought to bear. For as many years as the world was alive, for as many years as the heaven was aloft overhead, there was to be as many lanterns to be released that evening. She did not give a reason for why she wished this.

But some wondered if this ceremony meant to celebrate the lost wasn't because it was close to an anniversary. This would do as an explanation enough.

So, in the evening light, lanterns were made and cast into the sky, set to float along the river, and to hang from archways if they could do neither. The baroness set no limitations to the lanterns or how they should be set or colored. So, there were many colors that night... A celebration. Mourning. Memories. Hopes. Tears.

She first checked on the queen and ensured that the woman and her children were well... and then she excused herself to her room, where she waited out the rest of the night, setting a simple lantern that she painted wings onto just outside of her window, lit with a tiny candle.

Dixon collapsed onto a couch with a groan, flatly flopping about as surgeons flapped about him, wonder just where to start.
They had noted the spear wound on his left arm, which, thanks to Luck,
had missed the artery there; they found the curious blackened vines crawling up his limbs; they were shocked by the extensive burn mark reaching up his back; most of all, though, they were appalled and confounded by the scorching of his face. The staff there at the estate would do what they could,
but were reluctant to guarantee success of any kind--perhaps this uncertainty set in as the wailing of the count was heard all through the night.

Yes, the adrenaline--the emotion and physical shock--had worn off as he stumbled in with the baroness. Though he had taken many breaks over the flight into the royal abode, he continued as though he weren't so gravely injured; but it wouldn't be fair to the goddess to simply be alright after something like this; and so the count allowed his soul to be rend itself in two on that table. He needed to feel that pain he caused--and it was set in the count's mind that to live through a death's worth of agony was the only repentance for killing.

They plunked and peeled at him, and Dixon reeled back the crawling flesh of his current anguish to find, as the doctors hoped in their own way, a less bastardised and tainted version of the count whose meteoric rise was due to his smile and handshake, not warlike tendencies. All he wanted was to live in a world in which every day was a tomorrow in which he would finally come face to face with the full glory of his lost name and the legends of love and service with which it had woven itself into the fabric of Ethe's being--tomorrow; to think of it as a past thing, to see himself on the adult side of such a pivotal, prayed-for moment was to kill it completely, no matter how magnificent it was (and to him it would remain such a bitter thing to think of the time when he idolised the deliverer of his provenance as nobleman as none other than his...

Goddess. --He had passed out, awakening to darkness made by the relative brightness--that is, so many of the lights around, spread out just so, were enough that it stole the reflection of any moonlight away from the count's ruddy eyes, stinging him blind upon awakening; he checked himself, waiting for that sight to drain in, thinking it was just the loss of blood by the surgeons' hands, sitting up gingerly on that bed as he came to realise that these weren't some fae reapers come to help him away but instead the fair and mourning satellites of the most beautiful display of honor and reverence he had ever seen: migration to migration, a pilgrimage for our time into a the veiled time of those whose morns and evenings and middays were all blind and warm and cold as the fertile and infinite realm of our birth; stars to the sky and reflection by any water still flowing is the heart that has shattered countless times again and again in the moment of losing one's everything; true is eye of such a love who could find even a spec of such a beauty to inspire such aching love on its fractillic journey into horizons through which the mist bears yet another sun for everyone--for the lovers, the warriors, the farmers to complain and praise until, in the coldest winter, it is longed for throughout its setting.

    Dixon had to smile, hanging his head between his bowed shoulder blades like a vulture. That numb smirk knew all those stars above were not for him;
he counted their reflections in the polished tiles of the windowspace and began to chuckle softly, weakly to himself at the sight of it, for he knew that this was the place he wished he could be--he could feel it then too--a place in time where he might come again and again and--when he was there he knew exactly what he was feeling, yes; he felt the courage tested in him and brought to the brink as blade in the forge; he felt his body frozen there until a name called for him, and all the lethargy thence obliterated... --sitting there on the edge of that glittering shore, a arm's length out from him, kicking his feet absently, Count Dixon Titanus, Tomorrow's Count, sat and waited, and for all times felt his soul tossed in the sound with the most brilliant flashing all around.

This was just the type of man he was, and just the day for such a boldness which most of his dealings necessitated: the calmness of the sky was without measure if not for the punctuation of every growling gust along the frosted plains, formerly completely covered with ash; so the better it was for the peace of Dixon Titanus' mind that he continue to charge ahead in this moment.

He waited in the appointed area, perhaps nodding but not bowing to the authorities inside the abode, and quietly meditated--the calm, how you see it--there in the angles of elbows and knees and the sloping head dangling hairs over the polished floor, a willow mangrove with no root but the heart.

Baroness Youkimi Kai

Having returned and arranged more open trading borders, Youkimi found herself busy with arranging on paper what she needed and what had been agreed to. The business was good for Ethe, and it proved to keep her busy. Fortunately still, there were many who were eager to gain a livelihood if they could not secure means that came naturally to them. A fair number of them found their calling in excavating, trading, or in doing business, and to hear that this allowed more revenue through the country gave Youkimi greater hope for the people of the nation.

She was called from this work when she was alerted to the arrival of the count. She finished the current work and then moved herself from the area. She adjusted the coat that was on her shoulder and made her way to the meeting area, or the drawing room that had been set aside for meetings that were not formal. Youkimi decided against using the throne room for business, as she was not the queen, and it was not her place to do so.

On entering the room, the servant announced her, and she greeted the count with a polite bow.

"Count Titanus."

Lady Chusi Chhatrapati

The golden Phoenix twirled in the air, making a fancy loop around as a single phoenix chased her. She was just above the royal abode. She looked injured, her golden feathered covered in blood as she was attacked by the other Phoenix, its claws sinking into one of her wings and throwing her, but she was able to right herself despite falling several feet and she flapped her large wings and pushed forward, grabbing the rival Phoenix's neck between her powerful beak and ripped back, pulling out several things from inside the rival phoenix's neck and watching it fall, its feathers slowly disintegrating as a guard clad in Solidonian armor would fall onto the ground with a ripped out throat.

The golden phoenix would then land and slowly the pretty feathers would vanish as well. Chusi would come out of her phoenix form running and she would fall to her knees before falling onto her back, gasping hard. "Holy s**t" she managed to get out as she took a moment to breath, those two words just ran though her head over and over again. She needed a moment to breath, she needed to breath, she couldn't breath. Chusi moved her good arm up to her chest to feel her heart. It was rushing, she hadn't felt like this in years, but it was also scary cause... she hadn't felt this way in years.

Chusi closed her good eye and breathed more and she pushed herself up with her good arm, feeling horrible as she brought her good hand to the front of her kimono and held the torn fabric together, She couldn't rest to long, what if she died from blood loss and didn't wake up. Her face stung from what must be dark bruises by now as she ran into the royal abode. A guard tried to stop her but she just shrugged him off despite the horrible pain that ran though her bones.

Doors could be heard slamming against walls as she shoved into room after room, looking for someone of importance. That's when she saw a servant leaving a room and she walked over, adjusting her hand on her cut clothing before she shoved her way into the room. She barely registered the Baroness and the Count before she leaned up against the door. Her bruised face and wild hair filled with blood from the Phoenix she had killed not more then a few minutes earlier, her own blood dried on her split lip, her one swelling cut eye...her face probably looked horrible to look at but she had no time to worry about that. Blood ran down her Kimono, almost the entire front of it was bloody either from her own blood or others, while her good arm held as much of her kimono together as she could her bad arm was limp at her side.

She looked between the Baroness and the Count, not knowing who she should speak to. Standing to long was making her dizzy and she grabbed the door handle with her bad arm, causing her to hiss and her sliced eye to sting from welling tears "Solidon is hostile" she managed to get out before falling to her knees as she was overcome with vertigo and she forced herself to hold back the bile in her throat.

"Milady..." Dixon was expecting this conversation to happen sooner. Unfortunately, all that time let the tension build. Dixon's mind had been eating at him constantly... His actions regarding his states had become aggressive, and he found that chasing the ideal he set for himself was the only solace for him. He was about to begin when...

"Lady Chhatrapati!" Dixon rose and immediately dashed to the lady's side, crouching to support her should she reach for his arm or shoulder. The idea was to get her to sitting. "Please, relax... What news is this? Is there trouble with our fair state?"

Baroness Youkimi Kai

She sat down, unsure of what they would talk about, and also newly anxious, but for the exact reason, she could only suppose.... there was a lot to talk about. The state of things, the unrest at the fire, the loss of the firekeepers, and the great mourning that fell among the people. There was fear.... This seemed remarkably pointed by the way the lady stumbled into the room where she and the count had been sitting.

She was quickly on her feet. She heard a servant gasp. A guarding soldier was about to apologize, but his tongue was halted. She quickly directed him to fetch the nurses and doctors, to advise them to arrive in all haste. The soldier was quickly away and at his back were other servants, those who knew the names of those they needed to talk to.

She knelt beside the lady, her cousin. Youkimi knew nothing of medicine, healing, or of the damage of war. She knew something of illness. She knew of the treatment of ashlung and of deep coughing. But blood meant damage. This extent of bleeding? She was inclined to believe that the noblewoman had been attacked.

"We need to get her to a room. Just down the hall and that way." She looked to Dixon. He was strong enough, Youkimi was fairly certain."She's teetering on consciousness."

Chusi shivered slightly as she rested against Dixon. She looked up at him and grinned slightly "you have really pretty eyes....." she said and then looked away and gagged slightly on her own tongue before looking over at Youkimi "I'll be....fine" she said, a clear lie as her vision went hazy "I killed a guard outside...not yours...I don't think." she said as she frowned and looked at the ground "Solidonian made armor, we..." she bit the inside of her cheek as she felt another dizzy spell and she just laid against the count again "we make our own armor" she said

Chusi would stop talking for a moment and she closed her eyes before all of a sudden waking up and jolting, causing her arm to thud in pain and the slash across the front of her body to gush blood, turning the beautiful blue hanfu a darker shade of purple "Duke Chai has...." Chusi frowned, she didn't know how to explain the curse, it was public knowledge for anyone who cared to ask or read the history, but she didn't know if they knew so instead she opted for the simpler answer that she didn't need to talk about "Chai is dead and Argos...." she took a deep breath as she stood up "Plans to attack Antigone" she put her hand that was attached to the wounded arm against the door "you mentioned a room? she grinned slightly, going off topic for a second as she seemed to be getting more and more disoriented as she started to walk off, the pain in her abdomen the only thing bringing her back as she fell back to her knees just a few steps away and it was almost like she gave up as she just flopped onto her side and let out a pent up breath of air that sounded like the very definition of stress as it reverberated though her lungs.

"Damnit!" Dixon cursed himself for letting her stumble out of his reach. He wouldn't let that happen again. "Come on now--"and in this moment he did linger just a moment on what she had said of his eyes--that like should compliment like!--as he practically warped to the lady's side again. He of course was more careful when he looped her arm around his shoulders and started to haul her off toward where the staff had pointed him..."--we're going to get you fixed up and I won't hear two ways about it... Now then." It was, after all, where he had been just a couple days prior.

He felt an oddly potent stinging on his back and shoulder. Whatever blood was spilt from the lady onto him would eat at his skin with a terrible burn, especially on those pesky scars...--but the count would only wince at the pain's first appearance; his was not a chivalry that would allow a man to appear weak in front of a woman, let alone one in such dire condition.

"There..." On the table, Dixon silently prayed to the god of his ancestors, Pelib, to strengthen the eyes and hands of those who would work to save the young golden phoenix; eyes downcast, the count marked a space apart from the room that was an entryway, he reckoned, for the divine to enter the mundane through the hands of skilled surgeons.

    "Those bastards...!"

The Baroness helped to clear the way as best she could, but all she felt she could do was ensure there was space necessary for the surgeon and the assistants he chose. Because of the condition of the queen, and because of the presence of children in the estate, Youkimi saw fit to keep them on hand, or to always have a contingent available who knew about healing and the care of children and mother.

At the sight of blood, one of the poor girls fainted. Fortunately, the guard on hand was able to help carry her from the room so she could recover in another guest chamber. The surgeon wasted little time. Why were so many people being injured lately? But, his feelings aside, he stepped up to take care of the wounded lady. Bandages were procured and put to use. Acid or no, he would not be stopped from ensuring this woman didn't die from her wounds.

Water was brought, and one of the maids brought it to a boil so that the cloth he used to clean away excess blood-

"It might be best for the gentlemen to leave the room." He shooed them out. "Baroness, I doubt you might be of much help here either."

Youkimi wanted to say otherwise, but found that she could not. She bowed and resigned herself from the space, moving so as to let the expert work. To get at the injuries, after all, that which was in the way needed to be removed. The men who listened would catch onto that quickly.

But... Solidon was hostile... She needed to know more. She began to call for the guards, to have them inquire after the state of things, or to find messengers and scouts who could soon find out.

Chusi laid down, keeping her good eye open as best she could as she then looked at the ground and the blood that dripped from her body, some of it was harmless and must have been from the two guards she killed, some of the other blood began to slowly eat though the carpet. Her abdomen was going to be stitched first but as her blood seeped from her wound it would eat away at the string. Chusi sighed as she closed her good eye "Just cauterize it or find a healer" she whispered as one of them nodded slightly, bringing in a healer that did their best to heal up the wound across her abdomen. Her skin knitted back together just enough so that it would stop bleeding before it was once again stitched her up.

Her arm was then looked at, however it had stopped bleeding, so as the blood was wiped away and the cut was stitched up they then moved onto her eye which seemed to be the biggest problem. The healer managed to heal her eyelid back together so it wouldnt be cut into fourths anymore, and they washed out the blood, however the sight of the right eye since the healer couldn't heal organs. Once the healer was done and the stitching was finished they left, putting the bloody rags in a box as the servants washed their hands, however their skin had already started to turn red from her toxic blood.

Chusi looked up at the ceiling with her good eye, she felt so tired but she knew she couldn't sleep just yet. Chusi's dress was taken away and she was given a blanket to wrap herself up in since the abode didn't have anything in her size. Chusi would wait for a moment before she would say to Youkimi and Dixion "Argos seceded from Ethe and is planning to attack Antigone" she finally said after she was no longer wanting to vomit from dizziness "He's calling himself the Prince of Solidon State" she whispered.
