Zak had never been especially shocked in his life. A few times, sure, he'd taken a second to register what had just been said, what had happened, and usually, that was quickly followed up with anger. But this time.... he didn't know what happened. Suddenly, Adam was shaking his shoulder, hard, and Braviary was attacking the man behind the weapon. Zak didn't move. It was like something had wrapped itself around his brain, and was desperately fending off the rest of the world. He swallowed, and suddenly, sound rushed in with the visuals.
"We need to leave NOW! Come on! Download the blueprints and get up!" Adam demanded, his voice loud, stern, but.... shaking. He was aware of what had just happened. He couldn't ignore it. But, there was more at stake here. "Come on, Zak, don't--" He nearly fell as Zak suddenly shoved him away, and was on his feet. "Zak!" He hesitated following the Russian as he strode towards the weapon, before he checked his communicator, and ran after him. He stopped when he noticed the gun in the man's hand.
An Eelektross had been released to fend off the furious bird attacking its trainer, but just as the man -- crouched and bleeding, and looking as angry as his attacker -- turned, Zak lifted the gun, and shot him in the head. And kept shooting. He didn't slow his pace, until he was standing over the body, and had emptied the rest of the casings into it. He turned, sharply, and pulled up his wrist watch; his laptop had been smashed in the explosion, but he could still finish hacking the system from his watch.
Adam hesitated, before he released his Aggron. The pokemon tossed its head with a roar, before it charged towards the weapon to destroy it. Zak was working fast, but there was still chaos around. He could hear voices in the distance, and pokemon were battling, but it seemed a lot of the workers here had either retreated, or gone to get back up. It didn't matter, though-- Zak had his blueprints and shouted for Braviary, catching the bird's claw as it swung by. He didn't even glance over to make sure Adam was following, instead swinging into the duct they had escaped from, and recalling Braviary before bolting for the exit. He could hear explosions going off, a sure sign that things were wrapping up and it was time to get out.
His feet landed on compressed sand as he dropped out of the duct, and he immediately made for the meet up point. He could hear Adam shout once behind him, and then hear him running to catch up, but the look on his face must have cut him off because he didnt' say anything once he was by his side. There was absolute chaos behind them, but they managed to make it out safely thanks to the distractions from the other two. "I'm leaving. I'll send ze information to Imperium later," Zak stated flatly as they reached the meeting point, not even slowing before he released Braviary again. The pokemon looked injured, but he didn't complain or hesitate to let Zak up on his back, before taking off. Adam winced, but let him go, before sighing. God.... that was going to make things messy....

Lafayette was grateful when land appeared and even more so when his feet were firmly planted on it. There was still an uneasy feeling (fear possibly? Not that he’d admit it) about going over bodies of water after what had happened, though he was quick to remind himself that it had only been a part of the equation.
That monstrosity of a black crystal that had appeared to fire at them for no reason was the other. That caused the unease to subside and a proper rage to form. Lafayette would find that thing and punch it in the face (or whatever counted as it’s face) for what happened. Even if it cost him his other arm. He’d do it.
But that was a different region and he needed to focus on the here and now. As much as he wanted to bust down the gym doors, training was really needed. So, why not explore some of these ragtag buildings? Something that had caught his eye on the way in was a mansion; clearly abandoned given the dilapidated look. He recalled from Juliean’s ramblings that it belonged to a pokemon… researcher or the like? But the volcano that basically formed the basis of the island had erupted and damaged quite a few of the buildings; it looked like that mansion was one of them.
Lafayette had only ever been in a handful of ‘mansions’ in his life, for repair work. There wasn’t much of an opportunity to be exploring the place unless you wanted trouble. Not that this place didn’t look like trouble; in fact, it screamed ‘Hazard! Stay away!’
That was the kind of adventure he needed right now.

Despite how perilous the surroundings were, there weren’t any blockades preventing Lafayette from making his way up the path to the front of the mansion. It wasn’t clear if this was on purpose or oversight by whatever commission was responsible for safety around these parts. After all, it didn’t seem wise to just let anyone stumble into a partially burnt down mansion.
But here the Aussie was, just waltzing up to (what remained) of the front door without hesitation. It briefly crossed his mind how dangerous this was but that just inspired him to do it more. What he lacked in common sense, he made up for in bravery.
His young death would be heralded through the ages. No doubt about it.
The stairs creaked under his weight as he made his way up and for a split second it felt as though the wood would snap underneath him. It held though and Lafayette came to a pause in front of the massive doorway. It was clear that this place had been quite fancy in its heyday. About the style, he expected from a rich and more than likely eccentric individual. He hadn’t yet met a sciency type that was ridiculous one way or the other.
As much as he wanted to start this makeshift training adventure, Lafayette had to pause. Wandering into a death trap like this alone was well… a deathtrap. He tugged Noah’s pokeball from his belt and pressed the button to unleash the pokemon. The otter gave a loud yawn, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Well, it was good to see he was finally up and at it.
Noah seemed to sense that he was being watched, arms dropping as a chill ran up his spine. His head slowly turned to look at his trainer and he jumped in fear at the staredown. Was he still in trouble? Had he messed up again? Was he about to get socked out for another nap? Noah was used to Lafayette’s temper, Arceus knew he’d developed one himself since being in the man’s presence. But still…
He flinched as Aussie knelt before him, still looming and imposing even with his height cut in half. On reflex, the Dewott threw his arms up as though ready to smackdown and defend. He might’ve even gone for a sucker punch if it weren’t for the surprised look that crossed his trainer’s face at the action.
"Tha’ ******** ya doin’ mate?" Lafayette asked proper confusion etched on his face. Which just confused the Dewott. "Yeh lookin’ fa a blue afta’ nappin’ like a rock?" He raised and hand a flicked the pokemon gently between the eyes. "Well good onya. Tha’s wha’ we need righ’ now." With a grin he stood back to his full height, leaving a confused Noah to work through the sudden turn around in mood. The poor pokemon was really expecting a whomping but clearly, that wasn’t going to happen.

Noah rubbed his forehead where he’d been flicked, still trying to fathom all that had happened. He was fairly certain he’d been in some weird dungeon just a bit ago with some other pokemon… had that been a dream? It felt very real though; he felt stronger than normal. But he hadn’t been training or anything… in fact, the last thing he remembered was watching Lafayette and that woman he knew duke it out. But this wasn’t the same place. They’d been on a playground and this was a burnt down mansion.
What did he miss?
Noah’s thinking was shattered at the sound of an obnoxiously creepy creaking noise, attention shooting to his trainer. While he was just standing there trying to figure out how he’d missed so much, Lafayette had opened the door at this point, peering into the darkness.
His nose crinkled as the scent of dust and ash invaded his nostrils. Yeah, it was a safe bet that no one had lived here for quite some time. Though, there were signs that people had been in at least a few times.
None that they’d been out though. At least, not as far as the Aussie could tell. Shrugging off these clear warning signs, he glanced back at Noah and gave a jerk of his head. "C’mon Noah, stop dippin’ off in dreamland!" He said, before stepping into the house. The Dewott jumped in surprise again before quickly scrambling after his trainer. What exactly were they getting themselves into here?

The smell only got stronger the further inside the pair went. At a point, it became unbearable and Lafayette paused to dig through his tool belt, tugging free the handkerchief he kept on with him for just such occasions. It was stiff from the dunk he’d taken (he hadn’t had much of a time to tend to the contents of his tool belt pockets) but a few violent flaps were enough to give a bit of movement. Unfortunately, the Aussie still hadn’t developed the necessary motor skills to tie knots by himself.
It was a bit of a harsh reminder, but he shook it off turning to Noah. "’Ey, Noah. Can yeh tie this fa’ me mate?" He said, holding it out the pokemon. Noah, still uncertain of the whole situation, delayed but nodded stepping over as Lafayette positioned the cloth over his face. It took a moment for him to remember which part went over what, but eventually, it was tied and in place.
"Cheers mate, ‘ppreciate ya," Lafayette said, giving the Dewott a friendly rub on the head. The pokemon was still uncertain about the affection after what had transpired what felt like only hours ago. But it was also… nice, to be praised again. It’d been a lot more common in the earlier days for the man to do that; give him some praise and teasing along with it. Things had changed at some point… it felt a bit like him evolving had gone and changed everything.
Just the thought deflated his mood some, but now was not the time for mopping. Already Lafayette was resuming movement, heading deeper into the house. Despite how extensive the damage on the outside looked, it wasn’t as bad on the inside. There was dust and soot still about, but the infrastructure appeared to still be sound. For now.
The Aussie hadn’t forgotten why he’d come in here; he still had intentions to train in the back of his mind. But he wasn’t entirely sure what he’d find lurking about this place. The scent from before was still lingering though and only grew stronger the closer he got to the stairs. Lafayette came to a pause just a few feet away, squinting against the dark. Something was shifting under the stairs… was the ground moving? Ugh, the smell was atrocious, that was for sure.
"The ******** is tha’ mate…," He said, face scrunching as the strange mass rolled out to greet the pair and block the path up the stairs, a large mouth appearing followed with a “Mmmuuuuukkkk”. Ah, a pokemon. And a stinky b*****d at that. Now it made sense. Lafayette swatted at the air, still disgruntled with the smell before glancing at Noah, who had both his paws clutched over his own nose. "C’mon mate, let’s clear this b*****d outta tha’ way."

The Muk wasn’t much of a challenge for Noah, just a messy encounter. It rolled away and slipped down the hole that the Dewott had formed like a purple mudslide, disappearing from sight. Noah huffed, wiping away a stray glob from his arm, jumping as a weight fell on his head. He turned and looked back to see Lafayette patting his head and while the man’s mouth was covered, he could tell from his trainer’s eyes that there was a cheeky grin underneath.
"G’job Noah, yeh got stronga’ didn’t ya mate?" The Aussie said, retracting his hand and starting his way for the stairs. Noah stared in awe; was that a compliment? Who was this man? It was hard not to be startled by the sudden change in attitude; he’d seen it from time to time how swiftly Lafayette swung from one mood to another but this was still… different.
It was nice.
"Noah, c’mon, stop slackin’." The Dewott snapped out of his trance, mouth clamping shut as he puffed up his chest and quickly trotted after the man. Right! He was there to watch Lafayette’s back and vice versa. The stairs creaked with their weight, as though they threatened to splinter at any moment, but the pair made it up them unscathed. The sound of chittering was loud from the corridor to their left, with shadows moving against the darkness. All the squinting in the world couldn’t tell the pair what it was and so Lafayette took the next best action he could think of.
Tugging a ball from his belt he unleashed Micah. It’d been a while since he’d let the Arcanine out for anything other than battle and even then that’d been a while ago. The hound blinked against the darkness before side gazing at his trainer. "’Allo tha’ Micah, how you doin’ mate?" Lafayette remarked, giving the creature a scratch under the chin before pointing down the hallway. Micah spent a long while staring at his trainer, taking in the very obvious changes to his trainer, before looking down the corridor as directed. The shadowy figures moved closer at this point and it was clear that a pack of Rattata and Raticate were approaching, clearly agitated at this invasion.
"Clear’em out Micah. An’... get some ligh’ in this place, would’ja?"

A normal person would’ve seen how overkill it was for Micah to go in and stomp down the poor group of rodents, but Lafayette wasn’t normal and was pleased to see them scrambling and slamming into walls to clear the path after the hound had taken them down. Micah huffed, turning his attention to an unlit torch on the wall and blew a huff of fire to light it. He turned to address the Aussie and Dewott, earning another chin scratch from his trainer.
"Ta mate," Lafayette continued down the corridor, keeping an ear out for other noises; pokemon or otherwise. The place creaked and groaned with every step he seemed to take and the added footsteps of Micah with Noah made the sounds harder to discern.

Exactly why was he listening? It was a bit of a question; Lafayette doubted that there was another living soul in this place. Just pokemon and … well dust. But he wanted to be on alert anyways; he’d been off his game in practically everything lately. If he was going to get these tasks done and Juliean off his back, he’d need to get back into that headspace.
He’d been slacking. In practically everything. In training, in work, in fun … hell even in home life. A shiver ran down his spine. He hadn’t contacted his parents since the incident with his arm and the thought still brought dread. It’d have to happen eventually. There was no not going home and having it be ignored. And Lafayette wasn’t one to just … never go home. He loved his family, he’d miss them real quick if he had to purposely avoid seeing them.
Eventually, he would have to come to terms with what needed to happen and just swallow the concern of fear and disappointment that would follow once they found out. It was gone and there was no changing that. But he wasn’t, and that was what mattered.

Much as he loved his parents, thinking about their reaction to this mess was a sour note for Lafayette and was a quick way to return him to a somber but agitated attitude. Which he didn’t want to be in right now.
His focus was on training and getting ready for the next gym. Lafayette grunted and began down the corridor, Noah and Micah trailing close behind. They reached the end and his brows rose in surprise; there was a large gaping hole that dropped down to what appeared to be another floor. The basement perhaps? Or a secret sort of lower floor that whoever had owned the mansion before it’s demise. It was still too dark to tell, even with the torches lit by Micah earlier. Fortunately, it wasn’t so big that they couldn’t go around it, a portion of the floor was still steadily intact to the left of the hole towards a set of stairs leading up to the next level of the house.

Noah’s gaze was also fixated on the hole and what lurked below and the Dewott nearly tripped in when his slow shuffling caused Micah to bump him from behind. He flailed and yelped, feeling something latch onto the back of his neck. Fortunately, the Arcanine was paying attention and gave a grunt as he pulled the other pokemon back up, a looming look that suggested the water type watch himself before he ushered around to their trainer. Noah gulped, glanced once more at the hole and then quickly rushed after the pair before he was left behind.
Which wasn’t a worry, as yet another pack composed of Rattata and Raticate (albite, only a size of three and not 4) blocked them, chattering away violently at the intruders. Lafayette scrunched his nose up in annoyance. Ugh, so many rats.

Micah made short work of the rats and Lafayette couldn’t help but smirk a bit as they scuttled away. "G’job mate," the Aussie said, flashing the dog a grin. The pokemon just grunted and nodded; he didn’t need to praise, he knew how to do his job. That’s what made him such a stalwart companion for Lafayette to have on his team.
Noah huffed, arms folding over his chest. The newfound pleasantries from Lafayette were nice and he couldn’t help but act a bit jealous that Micah was getting most of them at this time. He could take on those rats if he was given a chance! He turned his attention to the stairs and began to scramble up them. He’d find something to fight before Micah had the chance and earn himself some praise as well.
He reached the top of the landing, pausing to catch his breath. It wasn’t even that steep a climb but he was winded. The sound of shuffling just in front of him caught him off guard and he immediately jerked his head up to stare face to face with a Ponyta.
How did a horse get here?! The pony was startled when Noah yelped and reared back with hooves flailing in the air. The Dewott was not looking to get trampled today, that was for sure.

The ball gave it’s last ‘ding’ just has Lafayette strolled up to retrieve it. He eyed it in his hand before turning to look at the Dewott who was recovering still from the scare. "Yeh a’igh’ Noah?" He asked. The pokemon jumped again in surprise, giving the man a sheepish look. Was he about to be reprimanded for rushing off like that? Sure, he’d taken out the Ponyta and Lafayette had caught it, but it was foolish of him to go running ahead like that in a desperate attempt for praise.
"Noah?" Lafayette frowned. The Dewott hunched forward but gave a solemn nod, ready to get scolded or even whacked upside the head. The Aussie looked confused, scanning and sending the pokeball off to the pokebox before kneeling before the Dewott, placing a hand on top of his head. "S’alrigh’ mate. Happens ta tha’ best of us; just don’ go runnin’ off like tha’ ‘kay? May wanna catch some of these pokies."
Noah stared back in shock. He was expecting a whacking but instead, he got… well, a gentle reprimanding and a little bit of praise?
Who was this man?
Lafayette’s expression changed as a terrible stench managed to permeate his mask and invade his sense of smell. "Ugh, wha’ the hell-," he grimaced, slapping his hand over his face and glancing in the direction it’d come from. There was a round figure bobbing in the dark; Lafayette squinted and was able to vaguely make out the appearance of a Weezing.
Ah, well that explained a lot.
"Guh… nasteh," he grumbled. Noah looked from Lafayette to the Weezing, paws going up ready to take charge only to be stopped. He looked to his trainer, confused and slightly disappointed. Did he not want him fighting. "Don’ worreh Noah, ain’ you. I jus’ need ever’one pullin’ their weigh’ here for tha’ battle," he commented, pulling another pokeball from his belt.
And he had just the pokemon to take care of this thing.

Cheri watched as the Weezing collapsed to the floor, giving one last struggling “Weeez” before disappearing in a flash of light as a pokeball was tossed its way. The Espurr turned her head to address the trio behind her. It’d been a while since she’d been allowed out.
And something Lafayette would begin to immediately regret. Looking at the bubblegum colored psychic immediately reminded him of the temper he’d been trying to suppress so far. She’d made Mel mad at him for losing Z by revealing that in fact, he hadn’t just lost the creature, but let it be stolen by a punk-a** child. And then he was reminded of the punk-a** child and…
Okay well, mistakes were made at this moment. Noah could feel the tension in the air rising and was almost certain that the Aussie was going to punt the Espurr across the hallway if he was allowed to get any closer. Micah stood just behind, stoically watching their surroundings and paying no mind to the tension. It went without saying that he’d seen enough temper tantrums from his trainer that what was happening right now? It was nothing new.
Lafayette finally broke the silence with a long hissing sigh, beginning to slowly move his way past Cheri. The Espurr just trailed him with her large, piercing red eyes, clearly expecting something. If she was surprised that she wasn’t sent flying, her face didn’t show it. Their trainer stopped though only a few feet, turning about at looking at the three pokemon that lingered behind him.
”Well? C’mon yeh lazeh buggahs.”

Traversing through the house proceeded as expected. Pokemon appeared from time to time to bar the way (very often, a group of Rattatas and Raticates) only to be quickly dispatched by one of the three pokemon. It was rather surprising to Lafayette as he realized just how strong his team had become over time. He’d flip-flopped between the different gyms so much, he’d forgotten what a challenge was like. Fortunately, Blaine (that was the bald fellow’s name right?) was of a higher tier, which meant… well, a challenge.
Hopefully.
The thought of it was just enough to get his mood back into the positives. That and actively ignoring Cheri, who was trying once more to snatch his communicator from him. This time though, there would be none of that. While he was refraining from punting her into the next open burn hole, Lafayette wasn’t about to let her have the slightest bit of ‘fun’ on his watch.
She’d either train or get the hell back in the pokeball.
Cheri knew this too, given that ‘privacy’ of the mind wasn’t something she had any kind of respect for. And, for now, she had no intention of being kicked across a derelict house. At least not yet.

Further exploration yielded little, unfortunately. It seemed the ruckus of their previous battles was enough to startle the residing pokemon into hiding, which limited the training Lafayette had wanted to do. Which was a shame, and just a wee bit annoying.
But only a little. The scents of the house were beginning to give the Aussie a headache anyway; the mix of lingering smoke, the gases from the wandering Weezings (and Koffings from what he’d spotted) and Muks just made it harder and harder to breathe the farther they went.
Eventually, it didn’t feel like it was worth it. He stopped, thinking about whether they were ready to take the gym at this point or not, gaze focusing on Noah. "Noah," the Dewott paused, peering over his shoulder curiously at his trainer.
"C’mere mate." Lafayette waved a hand to usher her close, kneeling down and tugging his bag around to the front. He struggled with the drawstrings but eventually managed to open it enough to dig inside. Noah watched him for a moment, curious about what the man was doing. A minute later and the Aussie was pulling out his pokedex and scanning the pokemon.
Noah was still confused but stood patiently. What was Lafayette looking up? He didn’t say anything, instead snapping the pokedex shut and dropped it back into the bag, fishing about for another few seconds before producing a heart scale.
"Here mate, let’s get ye a betta’ move." The man remarked, offering it out to the Dewott. Noah stared in confusion, taking the scale. Really? A better moveset? It’d been a while since their trainer had worried about such things. Lafayette was already back on his feet, hauling the bag back over his shoulder. "C’mon, we’ve been here long enough. Let’s get tha’ gym out tha’ way." He turned and gestured for Cheri and Micah to follow, heading back for the front door of the house. They could try the place again later; preferably when he had a suitable oxygen mask.
He wondered if he could get Juliean to foot the bill for something like that?

It was about an hour later that they’d left the mansion. Lafayette returned Micah once they were out, allowing Cheri to continue to toddle after him and Noah. He took a detour to the pokemon center to make sure his team was at tip-top shape, double-checked Noah to assure he’d gained a better move (he had, which was good) and started his way to the gym.
It was a bit of a climb from the pokemon center to the gym. It’d been rebuilt in a different location after the volcano erupted a few years back. Though, apparently that was to his benefit; the old gym set up was peppered with doors that required riddles to be answered according to Nurse Joy.
That was a bullet dodged. Instead, it was now a mostly normal looking gym, albeit a little out of the way. He shoved the door open and stepped inside and took a look around until he saw an elderly man nearby. "’Ey mate! I’m here ta take the gym leada’." He called, approaching the arena. The gentleman perked up, adjusting his frames. "Oh ho! We’ll you’ve found him! Some’s a little hot-blooded aren’t they?" A light seemed to flick off his tinted glasses. "Well if you’re burning for a challenge, I, Blaine, am happy to give you one! Are you ready?!"
Lafayette just stared. What was with these gym leaders being so… eccentric?
