So what do you all think about the Halo's Gift announcement?

It was a public confirmation of what has been obvious for a long time now.
I purchased one and I wish them well. Hopefully Gaia isn't already past the tipping point in terms of going down.

I totally agree with you on this. I bought one, too, but they'll need to devise a better strategy than that to keep the servers running. I'm really hoping they'll improve the subscription to the point that it comes close to sustaining the site (sort of like what Patreon does for music). I personally believe the Angel Subscription system is their best way to get reliable sustainable income.

As for your question about should you make a topic about those halo donation items, I'd wait to see how often the topic comes up. If it was a one-time (or even two-time) thing, then it won't need its own topic. But if Gaia starts doing it regularly, then it probably will. *sigh*

The angel subscription is overpriced (IMO).
Especially the $100 / $300 options.
I'd personally be embarrassed to accept 300/mo from any one user because it strongly suggests taking advantage of some sort of addiction or mental disorder.

Obviously the $5 / mo is more reasonable but IMO is still a bit over priced.
When they used to have the MC for $2.50 that seemed about right to me.
I know that isn't a lot but if this was a pay to play site and every user payed 2.50 / month it would probably be more than enough to supply their base needs plus whatever people purchased on top of that.

If I "lived" on this site then maybe 5 bucks (or more) would seem reasonable but all I do here anymore is chat in a couple of the forums.
As a generalized comparison - the online game WoW is $15/mo for a subscription and the amount of servers / graphics / bandwidth required is huge compared to Gaia which is largely a text based site. The game Rift is free to play but there is a premium subscription for more content but I couldn't find the price. I seem to recall a friend saying it was in a similar ballpark.

I guess the point being is if every user paid then the base amount to cover bills / start making a profit should be pretty low per person.
I appreciate your position, but I disagree. First of all, I would lose most if not all of my mules which I use for things like keeping charity funds and prize pools separate from my main account. Second, for folks who rarely come here, the pay-to-play would chase them away after just a month or two of hiatus and I don't think they would come back. That would also chase away anyone with financial issues who still enjoys this site.

My feeling is that the Angel Subscription should be ANY amount you like, with rewards kicking in at the tier levels. but I think that idea would be better posted in more detail in another thread.

So what exactly do you get for those new stars?
Or reward points. Or whatever they are called.

If I read correctly you only get one for every 400 GC so I probably won't be getting them.
Also not excited about something that expires every six months.
It's Gaia so I'm assuming some of the things you can trade the for will cost more of them. Similar to Go Fusion, which Gaia has largely abandoned.

The Gaia Rewards landing page is here. There are currently seven items available, ranging in price from gaia_star 4 to gaia_star 200. I am interested in precisely none of them, but I'm hopeful they'll eventually rotate in items that will interest me more, like Golden Fragments. (Whether my lowest-level Angel Subscription will net me enough stars within six months to actually buy any of them will be a different matter, of course.)

Thanks for the link.
I'm not interested in them either - as near as I can tell.
I think it's lame they don't even have descriptions of the items. When you click on them they go straight to confirm purchase. I was able to find some of them in the MP but not all.

Also, I wonder if Gaia is aware they have both a
Kindred Diedrich
and a
[KINDRED] Diedrich

Two different items.
That's not confusing at all. LOL!

The lame color swatch on my name and now this "spend a lot of cash to get some stars to buy an item you don't want" are kind of turning me off from donating cash to save the site. Maybe I'm just being jaded and surly but I preferred the old letters / monthly collectibles.

I agree there are downsides to pay to play / monthly fee.
And yes, some people would leave. But they are doing that anyway. At least with a subscription everyone here would be supporting.
Though I will say I think if Gaia wanted to go to a subscription service they would have had a much better chance of succeeding if they had implemented it when they had like three times or more users. Right now it seems like they are barely hanging on and any drop in users would just about break them.
I used to see 10,000 12,000 sometimes even upwards of 16,000 users logged in when I would log in. These days it rarely breaks 5,000 and a few times I've seen it below 3,000.

And yes on the mules. I have them too. Rarely use them now but used to use them a lot when I was running fish threads and contests and such.
One solution to that would be to allow "X" accounts tied to the email you register with. Similar in spirit I guess to how many internet providers will allow you to have X amount of email addresses tied to your account without any additional charge.

SO... another month ... another round of
"Please make the support items display / work properly"
type comments in SF and ATS.

I purchased the first two but now I'm holding off.
It's not like I'm very excited about a color swipe over my user name even if the one I have equipped WAS displaying.

Your name is a lovely blue. I didn't much care for the flairs anyway. I bought the first one when they were so desperate and I thought it would be a one-time request. But the only one I've gotten since is the free cupcake (no color swipe) that came today with their anniversary.

Thanks. I see it is working again.
But case in point - I equipped that the day it first came out. Then a day or so later it stopped working even though it showed as equipped in my avi dress up.

After a few tries I gave up in disgust and just ignored it.
I've done nothing and now it is working again.
But I did see other folks posting about problems with the new flair. Maybe they fixed all of it.

Mostly I find the whole thing comical / sad.
Gaia is supposedly working hard to fix the site (and I believe they are).
They release a super simple "item" for folks to show support.
Three months in a row, super simple item has had bugs / problems with either the sale / grant and-or the actual functioning of the item.
Bonus points if Gaia would actually give the damn thing(s) a proper description.

And I agree with you. I don't really like the flairs either.
I purchased the first two as donations to the site but but I consider the item itself to be very lame and not something I give a rat's behind about.

I am on a budget / very limited income.
Though I'd be lying to say I can't afford at least the $2.50 / month for the flair.
But I feel resistant to continue buying it because I find the item rather insulting.
Every on site item is just pretend pixels you can't take with you off the site but this item feels like they are not even putting forth any effort to make it seem like a desirable item.

Back in the day Gaia used to have some pretty cool items (and sometimes not) in the monthly thank you letters and Monthly Collectibles. Many users would purchase them ahead of time, excitedly waiting until the day they could open them (the 15th was it? ) and find out what they got. And there was even a choice.

So think about how badly Gaians would have lost their s**t if suddenly each month's MC was a starter t-shirt that said "I heart Gaia" and the only difference each month is they changed the background color on the t-shirt.
The flairs are that - only lamer. smile

I just wandered over to the special tab of my inventory.
I still have a lot of Thank you letters and MCs from the late 2000's.
Clicked on several to view the choices - unicorns and kittens and water sprites and armor and....
(sigh)

Well to be honest I know lots of things that cost more for less product these days. But I see what you're saying. The flair is not appealing to me, either. I didn't even keep the halo flair on this main account, but passed it on to one of my mules. I felt like it was not only isolated from my avatar experience, but makes the names harder to read, too. *sigh*

I agree with harder to read.

I can't think of any product I have purchased that cost more / gave me less.
An espresso drink from a coffee stand costs more and doesn't last as long but I'm getting something I want in the moment.
With the flair I am literally getting nothing except maybe bragging rights by being able to show others I purchased a given month's support item.
Except I'm not a bragging type of person and totally don't care about that.

So I bought it and equipped it (twice now) as a generalized show of support for Gaia while they said they are in a particularly bad money crunch but it doesn't appeal to me.

But my bigger complaint(s) on the item is for Gaia's sake not my own ego.
I can buy or not buy the flairs and my life goes on.
But I feel like Gaia is shooting themselves in the foot by making the support item so lame. Only the die hard supporters will keep buying a lame color highlight and those people are probably already purchasing other cash shop items.

The recent staff announcement makes reference to "three new gift box styles" that look like thank you letters but I can't find where to buy them or read more about them.

And as long as I'm being negative... smile
I just checked out the Valentines event. Nope. Not gonna dump my plat or spend GC just to get a pretend ingredient.

So I agree that if Gaia wants our money on a regular basis, they need to provide a more appealing product.

The "three new gift box styles" are available free when you gift an item to someone. They contain nothing until you put your gift to the person in them.

The event was a bit pricy, but I luckily joined the winning team, and will make back what I put into it and more. I think. I HOPE!

Oh, now I get it. Thanks.
Also a bit disappointing. I thought maybe they were bringing back MCs in some form.

These "buy an achievment" events just kind of piss me off so I'n not participating in this one. I joined a team and took a wing sticker (on my way to finding out what the event was) but that's about it.
Ended up getting a special ingredient on my second post. But that's still useless unless I purchase the other ingredients.

I can't really think of any other business that wants me to pay money for absolutely nothing. smile

I can't really think of any other business that wants me to pay money for absolutely nothing. smile

Luckily that's one of the things I really like about Gaia - you don't have to pay a single penny to enjoy the site.
