Ripley's gaze kept moving towards Taym and the gore their Division Lead had inflicted. He had never wanted to get away from someone so intensely before.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 06, 2014 9:37 pm

A strangled noise came from Shiloh's throat as Caelius pulled out gun but even as he reached for it, it was no use, it was Kostya 2.0 but far more deadly and infinitely more unstoppable. It was a bit like Shiloh, like the way he immediately turned to go help Taym, the way any thought of reason or rationality flew out the window, abandoned by his need to protect, to care. But the stilted voice that Taym managed to eek out stopped him in his tracks and he stood, frozen like a deer in headlights before taking a step backward, his face horrified, disbelieving, apologetic. He'd done it again. He'd opened his mouth, he thought that - no, he hadn't thought at all. It was his fault but no matter how hard he tried to fall in line, he didn't know how to give it up. He didn't know how to stop caring, he didn't want to, selfish and stupid he clung to the hope that things could be different, that maybe by the goodness of heart and the willingness to try he could change things but in the end, they never were, in the end, he never did. He took another step, until he bumped into one of the desks, and awkwardly, almost frantically slipped himself into it's chair.

He hadn't been able to help Taym, not in the slightest, and the least he could do now was not make it worse. Even though every fibre of his being screamed at Caelius, wanted nothing more to hurt him the same way he hurt everyone else, but it wasn't worth the damage. Even when he practically threw himself in the line of fire, it didn't matter, the Death lead always side-stepped it, always found a target that hurt Shiloh more than if the bullet had hit himself. He'd wanted to rally everyone together, but he'd only succeeded in proving more than ever that it was best to keep their mouths shut.

There was nothing he could do, not right now. Doing anything would only make things worse, would only drive the knife deeper, only send another bullet flying. There wasn't anything he could do, he repeated in his head, over and over. There wasn't anything he could ever do.

He knew that, yet he couldn't convince himself to stop trying. He couldn't abandon hope, not entirely, no matter how hard Caelius tried to wring it out of him. But he also couldn't keep hurting other people, couldn't keep letting people get hurt because of him.

An impass had been reached, and he was at a loss.

Completely and utterly disgusted with himself, he deposited his head onto the desk with a thunk, and mentally checked out, trying to drown out the sound of Taym's pain.

He'd sort this out later, when a man's life wasn't on the line.

It was only about thirty seconds. Thirty seconds as thick red blood continued to trickle, as the bracelet continued to beep, as everyone assumed their roles.

Oz suddenly stood up. "I'm done." He got up and placed his paper on the desk. "Also, sir, I want a specialization evaluation, but-" he glanced at Taym - "my group is short in numbers."

"That's not an excuse," the Death lead responded, flipping the paper over, "you could have taken anyone. Your sentiment is surprising, considering your background," there was something implied here that Caelius was not sharing, "but your report is substantial." There was only a single word, a name, written on the back of the page, but it was obscured by the crude doodle of a dinosaur shooting laser beams, which made everything look just the odder. Maybe Caelius really wanted dinosaurs shooting lasers as mission reports. Maybe he was crazy. Actually that was a given.

"Well if you want volunteers," the Death lead turned to look at everyone else, "I want exactly five. Five volunteers willing handicap themselves for a liability. You will wear a wristband that will monitor each and every thing you do for a month. If you leave the island without permission, the wristband will activate." It was pretty obvious what he was saying by activate. "Exactly five volunteers willing to sacrifice themselves for a single person's stupidity."

Lawr made it his policy never to stick his neck out for anyone ever. He didn't move to volunteer.

He had nothing to gain from this. Then again, he had nothing to lose either; and hadn't Caelius already reprimanded him (an understatement, if there ever was one) for his apparent "lack" of help within the Death Division? Hadn't he mentioned something about doing more?

This was not more, but it was not nothing either. Or maybe it was, and he was just deluding himself.

Gale sighed.

"I'll do it," he said, and there was a long pause.

"Sir."

<Don't even think about it. Don't do stupid things just to please that violent psycho.> But... <No.> Shu pouted ad looked at the guy who volunteered himself.

"What happens if a volunteer was shoved through, say, a portal to the sahara without prompting it?" He was, of course, referring to the incident with the not-at-all-suspicious body spray, where he had ended up in the desert with the others simply because he had been in the area. "Would the bracelet be activated?"

Shiloh didn't raise his head, but raised his hand instead. It's not like he had anything to hide, anyway.

"Count me in."

He vaguely considered lifting Lucky's hand as well, but thought better of it. He'd already caused enough trouble for people today, and he didn't hate the Life hunter that much.

Tobias was seriously beginning to wonder about his choice of friends. He looked from Ripley to Shiloh to the person who volunte- heey, didn't he deliver a book to him?

The death trainee looked thoughtfully at Taym, remaining silent and still.

Aleister watched as there were asked for Volunteers and Gale stepped up another asked a question. IT also appeared that there was one answer that was correct, the blonde haired hunter couldn't help but loft a brow at the death lead. Wondering what he was up to.

You gunna offer yourself up? It seems pretty gnarly as some of your kind would say.

Yeah. It's pretty gnarly, I might as well. I've not been much of any use otherwise.

Suit yourself. I can't help you if that's really what happens. . .

I know Pookie. Aleister answered mentally before raising his hand. He had to learn sometime right? "I'll do it." Maybe this would help him keep from being so damn skittish all the time. Plus he felt like he kinda owed Caelius something for fail birding on his spelling.

"What do you think will happen." The Death lead looked at Ripley flatly.

"I'm not sure. That's why I'm asking." The trainee returned the flat stare.

Taym could have been the strangest of strangers to Wilson and he still would have volunteered. There was something about someone in need that always made him lend a hand one way or another. It was going to be a rough time, but Taym was sort of a friend, right? [I think ya mean old acquaintance.] Close enough.

Still perched near the wall, Wilson spoke up. "I'll volunteer."

Caelius ignored redundant questions in favour for checking his watch, while Ripley argued about technicalities over Taym's broken, bleeding, body that was very likely going into shock from blood loss and still very much unspared.

The timer was still flickering and there was not very much time left at all according to the hourglass.
