"I talked to him about what Dr. Fell might want since after graduation, he will want to sell him. He was difficult of course, but he told me that Dr. Fell would just want parts. Made me remember the conversation we had when we met Dr. Fell and having dinner." He breathed out. "So unless we happen to get a lot of silver...." He bite his lip. "....I mean, he's done a lot for us and I'd do anything to keep him free and with us."

"Oh. Well, yes," Barth blustered, "but talking between us has never been, err, exactly, I mean, you and him always seem to have...elucidating conversations, and I thought you might-?"

Barth was blustering too much to notice the lava wave that swallowed them both.

When Barth returned to the base of a mountain in a puff of smoke, it wasn't without a certain amount of chagrin.

"I regret the subjects of my research. I should have been focusing on spells."

Zar had been sulking the entire time. It was easy to go into the mindset where he convinced himself he was a burden on everyone he ever dealt with and that he was overall surplus to all requirements, having his appearance insulted on top of that was nigh on intolerable. It wasn't like he was vain. Well, maybe a little. But letting himself go lately hadn't been an optional thing..

He was still pretty irritable when he wandered in.

Barth was a little surprised to see Zar was still around.

He was admittedly finding him more and more intriguing.

He was almost...dutiful. After a fashion. And contracts hadn't been involved at all. He didn't seem to mind taking damage, or climbing mountains, or all manner of extraneous things for the sake of a quest that had...somewhat limited promise of reward.

"Is there err," Barth ventured, "something you're particularly hoping will be up there? Artifactually."

He almost said it, before his better judgement clamped down on it. "No. Not really." he said, and realised that might give away more than he strictly wanted to about the fact he was here more just because than with any major goals.
