He looked out at the water, eating one sandwich half slowly. Good friend. Shows what she knew. Her judgement was flawed because she was sensitive and took what other people thought of her personally. To still be upset over friends who ran off on her a while back, then to need to confirm they were friends. He could be the worst person around she she'd enjoy his company. There were a lot of people here who seemed like that.

It's not a bad thing, to want company.

There is a difference between friendship and desperation.

"You too." he said, taking another bite of his sandwich. "I don't think I would be alive without the help of half the people here."

Rin smiled at him, her triangle completely de-crusted before she started into the good bits. Chewing and swallowing before looking at him again, "What.. uh.. made you decide to say yes?"

He turned to her, eating before swallowing. "Yes to what?" He reached out for his water, setting it down to take the cap off and set it on the towel before drinking some water.

"Yes to... this... all of this?..." She gestured about them, "the island."

Then polished off the rest of that sandwich half.

Melvin went back to eating, thinking about it. The question was probably one of the most popular ones he heard here, and one he addressed in his own way. "I couldn't say no and think about living with the regret. I like to know things, had been trying to learn about this, and no one had answers. The only way to find out was to say yes, or live with no knowing and hating that I gave up that chance." Not knowing would have killed him if he said no. Now that he said yes, it was the regret that would destroy him.

He continued eating, looking somber as he watched the water.

"It's not as bad as you think," she frowned to herself. That may have come out wrong. "What I mean is. You can do anything now... know things no regular human could ever dream to know. Once the portals are up again, you can even go anywhere in the world you want."

She reached to pick up another half and start on the crust of it too, "Go anywhere in the world to buy or do anything you desire. That..." She leaned in conspiratorially, "...and you keep the world safe. You can honestly say that because of you. A cog keeping the machine running. People back home wont suffer needlessly."

Rin kept on with inspriation, motivating, bulltshit that gave everyone a sense of self importance by being involved in a project. It was the speech they gave factory workers to recruit them at a young age, and he just felt himself more and more disgusted with what Rin was saying. He got what she was trying to do, which was not what made him angry. It was that she had no idea what she was talking about. This place might have been a luxury, a dream for her, but what room did she have to talk when her only option was here or an asylum. He at least managed to appear normal to the populace where she failed.

"I don't want to be a cog, Rin. I'm not satisfied as a cog, Rin." The words were near sharp, just close to passing the line of insulted. "And we can't just go everywhere we want. There are restrictions." What good was protecting the people back home when he couldn't go there? "And I can't really go patting myself on the back and giving myself a sense of importance when no one gives a damn who lives or dies around here. Not even our own superiors care. Everyone is just climbing on top of each other ....climbing on bodies." A few flickers of the Infirmary ward came to his mind, and he looked away. "What a great machine."

He went back to eating, finishing his one half of sandwich with a bit more bite than before.

Rin just watched him rant with a startled look. When he was finally done, she just.. lost her appetite really. She furrowed her brows at him, "If you honestly believe no one would give a damn if you died then you are the ignorant p***k who doesn't know a ******** thing." She turned her gaze elsewhere and set her jaw, "Not I."

"Well that's one less person on the island who won't wind up killing me." He said, forcing a smile as he continued to eat.

You are like, the WORST company ever.

Yet I have one friend. Can't be too bad.

Let's see how long that lasts.

He couldn't be too pessimistic. Rin was his friend, but most importantly, she was an ally to keep him protected. "Sorry."

Rin settled back down immediately at the apology. Bobbing her head along, "I'm sorry too." Then a weak but no less daring smirk, "You can be a b*****d when you want to be, you know." It was a compliment. She dug into her sandwich again. Hungry all over again. She hummed with approval. Man knew how to make a sandwich.

He smiled weakly as well. "Says the woman who pretended to drown and made me drop my gun."

"I'm sorry too Saliva, I bet that tasted terrible," she held up her last sandwich half in a subtle little 'cheers' gesture before consuming it as well and looking for her water. Taking a moment to open it before chugging the contents. Setting it down between her knees when she was properly refreshed.

"Do you celebrate Christmas by the way?"

"Saliva eats terrible things, though I don't think she likes water." Saliva confirmed this by making gagging noises. It didn't help him eat, and he paused to regain control of his stomach and to tell his stomach not to make sound effects. This left him time to respond to the next topic.

"I do, but I don't know what I'll be doing this year. It took a lot to get Thanksgiving to work, and you saw how well that worked out. If portals don't go up, no one is even going to have anything to donate, and the food here isn't great for holidays. I tried and scrapped what I could for Thanksgiving. I'm tapped out." In more ways than one. He had no money, resources, or motivation.

"You did a good job on Thanksgiving by the way. It's exactly how I imagined big Thanksgivings were based on descriptions. For Christmas though... there's not really a need to spend money really. Me and my dad usually made something meaningful for each other. I just really hope portals open up man. Not much is left on island to work with and they put price tags on anything not bolted down as a result."

She flashed a quick little smile at him, "At least you finally got your red hots... for now..."

He took another drink, having not looked at Rin in some time. "That wasn't a great Thanksgiving, but it was as close as we're going to get I guess." It had been nothing like his Thanksgivings, and while he was there, he knew that miles away, he was missing the seat at the one table he would kill to be at. All his work and he had been left without that sense of satisfaction, even a morsel of that feeling, that he felt he would receive. It had been a huge flop.

"I'm not very good at making things. Not the artsy type." He grew up drawing diagrams and perfect graph charts when other kids were drawing big-titted women and smelly teachers.

At the mention of his Red Hots, he leaned to take the box and pass over Rin her chocolate. "Too bad it doesn't snow around here. Already December and this place is still warm enough to go swimming." It was sad. It would be a vacation spot to some, but he missed snow. He missed iced-over lakes, the sound of snow ploughs going down the street, and the crunch of snow under thick boots.
