Christian blushed as Florida took a defensive stance in front of him. It was infrequent for someone to take such a pose for his sake, let alone Rutilio. It was.... Nice to feel like someone had his back, even though he knew all along any of his siblings usually did. This time felt... Different. Special.

He looked to Landon as his hand was offered in the form of help and a hug. A part of Georgia wanted to believe in it, but he also knew nothing came free. It was proven when Landon said he wanted something in exchange for his silence.
"Cal, I would say you always make me feel like I'm making a deal with the devil, but I feel that'd be an insult to a good gambling buddy of mine, so I'mma come straight out and ask what you want."

Landon blinked. Did Christian really think of his even-exchange capitalism as dealing with the Devil? But that didn't matter right now, because the Georgian was at least willing to hear him out.

So California also cut straight to the chase. "You know that this is too good a movie op for me to simply pass up," he stated, lowering his hands as he spoke. He knew that the others had probably already guessed that much. "I've already got a horrible debt, and skipping over a blockbuster occurring right under my nose is financially ruinous. But capitalizing off of another state's misery is just too far, even for me.

"So I'm going to keep going with the movie, which I've already started with you here anyway, but I'll protect your sensibilities if you help me style it away from you two. It's a bit like an insurance policy. No one will ever know if we do this right. How does that sound?"

Landon tilted his head at Christian and Rutilio once he had finished with his offer. Such an offer from the pro-business, pro-capitalist state was rare indeed, especially when he needed all the money he could get to haul himself out of his enormous debt. It was the best Landon was willing to offer, and he hoped Florida and Georgia would agree. The Westerner extended his hand once again to the sniffling Southerner in an invitation of goodwill.

(phone. Look, a head with a heart!)

He knew it.

No matter what kind of spin California tried to put on it, making a movie based off of what was happening between them was still profiting off Christian's personal and private life. There was nothing even-exchange about someone airing out their problems in film for everyone else to see even if Landon tried to hide the fact it was based on them. Though many liked to praise Florida as being relatively progressive for such an old man in the Deep South, there were just some things he couldn't tolerate. In a flash the normally cheerful, playful state had reverted back to his old ways which were primarily preserved only in the less popular regions of Northern Florida.

Rutilio snagged the wrist that was offered to Georgia and pulled his baby brother close. "Alta," he hissed in a low, dangerous tone he hadn't used on the younger state since he was hardly as high as his waist. "I knew Maria did not spank you enough as a child! If you believe for one second you can use someone's personal life as food for your media whores to save your own skin from debt, then you are sadly mistaken, boy." His accent even lost a little of its Spanish flare in his anger and dipped dangerously close to that of a Florida Cracker. "I am five seconds from bending you over my knee and beating the Hollywood out of your hide. So I suggest you apologize and rethink your little plot before I remind you exactly why I was once the most feared colony in the Southeast..."

No one knew harsher, more creative punishments than those of the ancient colonies from the earliest days of the New World. Some of the younger states were just lucky they had made a law about cruel and unusual punishments. California was very likely the one benefiting the most from that at the moment given the barely contained hostility emanating from his enraged big brother.

Landon yelped as he was roughly hauled over by a very angry Rutilio. "Hey! You don't even know what I have planned!" he griped in a hasty defense while he scrambled for another solution. "There are more ways to gain money than that! For all you know, it could be a children's movie! What harm can that be?!"

The state honestly thought he had found a rare middle ground, and that the Southerner wasn't thinking this through. Yes, he did care enough not to seriously wound the two Southerners, but he wasn't going under to keep their relationship secret. Sooner or later it had to come out, and if he was the one to spill it, at least no one would take it seriously enough to tease them about it. It wasn't Florida's reaction that surprised him, for he had gotten the same from every state who thought his movies would ruin them, but the vehemence with which he reacted to the idea. At least it had happened now, when they could be too drunk to remember, instead of in front of all the other states as well. If that happened, he was very certain he wouldn't be standing here right now. If Landon just kept the characters and gave the plot a complete overhaul, their relationship would be safe and he would have his money. Money was as dear to California as it was to Florida, perhaps even more. Could Florida or Georgia do better?

He decided to test that. Dragging Rutilio's hand with him, Landon crossed his arms in a huff. "I'm not the one who just got accused of slander, you were. I generally avoid risks like this. This is the only time I have ever needed to ask." He had never before needed to ask permission to make a blockbuster, and the sheer necessity was infuriating. Even the perpetually happy Westerner was getting angry. Georgia was completely forgotten as California turned his rage on Florida, and it was potent enough for him to ignore the possibility of apologizing. His debt was constantly threatening to sink him. His own politicians' lazy dithering had long since ceased to bother him, but was Ruti now denying him a way out of debt, too?

He sighed and waved his free hand in weary fury. "I just want the characters to stay. If you can't think of a better middle way, I'll call it off. But don't expect me to hold back if you two get in another scrape or even a divorce," he threatened, not really caring if Rutilio slapped him. Besides, his new challenge should at least make the Floridian pause for thought. "Don't forget, my movies have helped your South more than they have ever hurt. And my tourism ideas have made you my biggest rival in the Continent, Rutilio," he added, with venomous emphasis on the last word that clearly said I can break you. And he knew he could do it. As the fifth most powerful economic force in the world, he knew he could follow up on such a promise, even in his state of constant debt. California was still surprised that, after all Disney and Universal had done for Florida, he would turn on him so suddenly and violently. Just how deep did this newly realized Southern love go?

Trying unsuccessfully to calm down, Landon added, "I have always kept state sensibilities safe; you know that. Think! When have I ever directly profited from your personal lives? I just capitalize off the stereotypes. No one from one state thinks more of another state than the stereotypes anyways. Even if I were to blatantly dump your story in a tabloid for all the world to see, the people would simply put it down to crazy celebs and ignore it. All I want are the characters, and you two can do the plot, so long as it's useful. Honestly, a few movies and everyone thinks I'm out to get them good," he grumbled under his breath.

"I'll ask again: let me keep the characters and movie up, and you two design a good plot, and I promise no word of this will slip out until you're ready. I always keep my word." True, Landon had found numerous loopholes before, but he had never reneged on a promise between states, which was part of why he had rarely been successfully sued by his siblings. He had spelled out exactly what he wanted from them, and if they refused, he still had no intention of apologizing.

(Really, I'm all done. Quote me again when you are too. || Oh, this is going to break the trio so badly. || Georgia seems in a perfect position to make a compromise... or a second wallop. || Dark Cali should be an early Industrialist CEO. "There will be no middle way because the answer is no," Florida said firmly as his expression darkened further at the lack of respect or even concern California had for how hurtful some of his productions had been. There were many times when his movies had helped, yes, but there had been many more times when the stereotypes he admitted to capitalizing on had deeply upset others and left them feeling victimized. Whether their reputations recovered or not, there would always be that stain on their image and hearts. Alta seemed to have absolutely no clue or at least no remorse for the pain he caused just because it was something they would get over eventually. It was true Rutilio had also benefited greatly from the entertainment industry by hosting their theme parks such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando, but that didn't mean he was going to turn a blind eye to California's behavior.

The air around the entertainment industry titans was thick with animosity and indignation to the point it almost felt like dark clouds had gathered around them. Normally the Golden and Sunshine States lived up to their titles and were nothing short of bubbly, bright rays of joy and optimism so it was easy to forget they were also among the top five most powerful states in the American Union. It was only during one of these extraordinarily rare, epic clashes that the full weight of their political and economic power could be felt. These two alone could easily topple most nations if they so desired. However, even their worst arguments had never been to quite this degree of raw anger and the elder state seemed just about to the point of declaring war.

Fine. If the California was not going to respect their privacy and act as if he was entitled to their personal business, then Florida would have to take compensation himself. If they lost their right to privacy, then California would lose something just as precious to him, too. Perhaps even more so.

"I will give you one last chance to apologize and put this all behind us, Alta," he warned with a faint, but dark edge to his voice. "Maybe you should consider the repercussions and how much one movie is worth to you before you speak again." It would have been one thing if California was just messing with him, but seeing his Georgian crying in a fetal position as his little brother moved in to take advantage was too much. Though he loved the younger former Spaniard dearly, there was a line that Landon had crossed and if he continued to flirt dangerously with that line he just might find something very unpleasant on the other side. "I am not an enemy you will enjoy having."

Massachusetts had gotten the text and wanted to come to the party right away, but she was helped up at The Physicians office. She skipped down the hall and knocked on the door.

Conne smiled, "Who invited you?" he was just curious who brought her here. To Conne's knowledge he was the only state that she was friends with. "And i don't mean it in a bad or mean way, I'm glad you are here."

The State of Tennessee
Andrew S. Hickory

"I'm sure we'll think of something to play," Tennessee said with a small shrug. "I like most folk music and I think your clogging is nice enough for you to do it alone." He didn't mind simply plucking guitar and banjo strings together, either. It had been a long time since they got together to do that sort of thing, but if she really felt like they needed more southerners on their team maybe Georgia would be willing to help. Andrew looked up and paused when he realized that the brother in question was missing and it looked like both California and Florida had wondered away from the rest of the crowd, too. There was a small part of him which began to worry what sort of weird, most likely drunken, misadventures they had gotten into, but he was fairly certain no one had left the party. They would have noticed that, right?

Andrew heard the knock on the front door and, knowing California wasn't in the room to answer it, he decided the polite thing to do would be to let them in himself. He gently excused himself from his sister before opening it and smiling when he saw Massachusetts had arrived. "Hey, Leah," he said. "I ain't seen you 'round in a while. Come on in. I dunno where California got off to, but I'm sure he's here somewhere."

Georgia couldn't believe what he was hearing! Was California really about to harass him over his love life for a movie? It wasn't embarrassing enough that California ad already planned this s**t based off of what happened in the office, but now he was extorting him while he was vulnerable?!

He should have known that this invite had been some sort of a trap.

He watched as Florida stepped in and quickly turned to his darker mood in defense of him. He couldn't help but blush lightly, surprised that the normally goofy ball of sunshine was putting up such a fight for his sake. Here he had been, thinking that Rutilio didn't care about how he really felt. Now he was openly threatening his younger brother-- and Georgia knew Rutilio was just as much of a family man as he was-- all for his sake.

As the fight escalated some more, Georgia finally got over his distressed and stood up to his full height, towering over both of the bickering brothers. He frowned before balling his hand into a fist and sending it flying, knocking California right in the jaw hard enough that he could feel one of Landon's teeth pierce his own knuckle-- which said something about how much power he put behind it since he had been known to rip lamp posts out of cement when truly angered. After a quick shake of his hand, he then snaked one hand around Rutilio's waist and pulled him in, looking down at Landon in that princely way he tended to when putting anyone down.

"Take your movie and shove it. I'd rather have my family think less of me as a man than have you extort Florida like that. and you know what, just to prove how little I care if you slander my name or make a fool of me over this..."

Georgia leaned down and planted a kiss on Rutilio's forehead. Meanwhile, he flipped Landon off, just to prove he really didn't care right now. Granted, the alcohol was probably adding to the "King of the South's" daring attitude right now, but he still probably wouldn't have much regret if this bit him in the a** tomorrow.

Florida was preparing himself for another onslaught of verbal, political and potentially economic warfare when a fist came out of virtually nowhere and slammed into California's jaw. The elder state jumped and gawked in surprise as he watched his little brother go reeling from the hit. He had been so absorbed in their posturing and snarling that he had all but forgotten Georgia was even there.

"A-Alta?!" he instinctively fretted despite the fact he hadn't been too far away from physically assaulting the Californian himself. Rutilio felt the hand around his waist pulling him up against the tall blond and blushed as he looked up at Christian. Despite all his flirting and playful behavior, he wasn't used to people touching him gently like that and it took him a little off guard for Georgia of all people to be so tender to him. His blush only spread at the kiss and he was, for once, completely speechless.

Though he had stood up for Georgia, he hadn't quite anticipated the man who claimed to love him to actually stand up for him in return when he was threatened.

"Y... Your hand..." he mumbled dumbly after a second, having noticed the new cut on Christian's knuckles.

Landon stood his ground with folded arms. “I think you misunderstand, Rutilio,” he hissed, tensing as if in anticipation of a good old-fashioned fistfight. “Let’s do this a—“

Suddenly, a flying fist came out of nowhere and punched him hard in the jaw. The Westerner had expected a hit from Florida, not Georgia; and as a result, he was sent keeling over to ground without so much as a bit of resistance. The shock actually caused Landon to slam his teeth shut hard enough for him to break through the skin on Georgia’s hand, and he tasted blood. California actually welcomed the hot iron taste, for that was exactly what he was seeing right now—bloodlust. Through a red-tinted haze, he watched as Georgia hauled Florida in to him and proceeded to order him to destroy his movie.

Destroy several hours of hard work and scheming?! He would sooner subject himself to one of Alabama’s voodoo experiments!

Landon’s fingers groped along his belt until he found the item he was looking for. In a rapid bit of revenge, he whipped out his miniature camera and snapped a picture just in time to catch Christian planting a kiss on Rutilio’s forehead while simultaneously flipping him off. In a perverse way, the finger darkly satisfied the jaded cameraman. It made the shot the perfect blackmail material, for it seemed now as if Florida and Georgia had been at it for a while and were now flaunting their relationship for the camera.

As he stood shakily to his feet, Landon heard Rutilio cry out in shock at the harrowing blow his lover had just dealt him. For a moment, the Westerner paused, almost wondering if his old mentor would take back his harsh words and allow him to preserve his project. Then, the Gulf State was back to his antics with Georgia, staring at the other’s injured hand as if Christian were the only person that mattered in the world.

California couldn’t believe it. He didn’t want to. That act, more than anything else, was the last straw. How was this supposed to happen?! He had known Rutilio for far longer than that English-born b*****d had! He was the one who had always shown his appreciation for Florida’s aid so many years ago with theme parks and other ways to make the otherwise worthless state profitable! He and Florida were partners in film and industry! And Georgia? Georgia was a good-for-nothing farmer who was in constant danger of being assaulted as he had been during the Civil War! So how come Georgia was so readily able to steal Florida’s heart? Landon’s gaze swept across the embracing states, lingering on Florida’s in particular, before he squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, as if trying to erase the impossible scene. But when he opened his eyes again, there they were, still wrapped in a tight embrace. He blinked furiously, not caring how much his vision blurred, but nothing he could do could erase the absurdity that was someone else capturing Florida away from him.

California swayed as the realization finally took hold. Somehow, he had hoped that the two states were just messing with him, just like he himself was always messing with the other states. But, it seemed, there was no turning back. Not for them.

Furiously banishing the tears that threatened to spill over from his face, Landon restored his phone to his back pocket and pointed at them. His finger was shaking. “Fine,” he growled. “I tried my best to keep all three of us safe. If that’s how you two feel, then fine! The movie is done. But don’t be surprised if this comes back to bite you in the a** later. Remember, the truth always finds the worst possible way to come out. And if it comes out in a worse way than even I can imagine, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

With that last, potent, sentence, Landon’s fury was gone, replaced with an icy aloofness. Grabbing the two states roughly by the backs of their shirts, he hauled them bodily to the door and opened it. “Glad we could have this little chat,” he said curtly, before gesturing at the open door. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Georgia, Florida.” California’s formality, especially coming from a state more prone to amusing nicknames, was a warning sign in itself, as he showed them the door.

Christian blushed and glanced off to the side as Rutilio pointed out the newest injury to himself. Honestly, it was no big deal. Georgia had said it time and time again-- even if his body broke down, he'd still fight until he couldn't if it meant protecting those he loved.... So what was one little nick to the knuckle?

"It's nothin'. I've gotten worse injuries for worse reasons. Hell, I jump outta planes for fun in war times. You think a little cut like this gonna bother me none? I'd be more worried that I didn't just knock out Cali's teeth or kill the nerve with that hit..."

Which, again, Georgia was known to do. Hey, he didn't deny having a short temper from time to time. You make him mad, you suffer his wrath. Just because he didn't know magic didn't mean he wasn't his own vial of inhuman hurt when he needed it.

Of course, it was a bit of a surprise at how California reacted to all of this. Boy, Christian must have really pissed him off this time. Normally he and California could get along and would move past this sort of thing, but it seemed things had escalated even more than before Georgia stepped in. As he was grabbed, he let go of Rutilio and grabbed his clothes and cobbler and felt him dragging from the kitchen and towards the door. He stumbled a bit towards the open door and shot a glowing glare to Landon. He then glanced to his his siblings who were all still interacting before snorting and rolling his eyes.

"Whatever. Your party was lame as hell. No one listens to ******** Beach Boys any more besides old farts, any how. Oh, and by the way, get bent and have a nice day~," Georgia said with an obviously fake charming smile and a very heavy amount of sarcasm. If Landon wanted to have a fight, so be it. "By the way, stay the Hell away from my Newspaper cast tomorrow. If Miss Elizaveta tells me you caused her any sort of trouble, I'm breaking your arms so you can't use them damn cameras of yours." Georgia then looked to Florida, wondering what they should do now or where they could go. Going back to Georgia's dorm right now might not be a good idea since Andrew might follow and ask questions.... So should they go to Rutilio's? He doubted his little brother-- or anyone who really knew Christian-- would think to look for them together there...

Florida had only been able to watch in stunned silence as California snapped his camera at them and seemed to turn into something strange and foreign. He wasn't sure he had ever seen this side of his baby brother before and that last sentence he uttered before herding them out the door nearly stopped his heart. Rutilio's face was completely blank as he, too, stumbled out the door and said nothing as hearing the way California said his name made his heart spasm painfully in his chest while his stomach churned.

When he noticed Georgia looking to him, Florida flinched slightly as if suddenly being snapped back to the real world. He was almost dazed and confused as he glanced around the hallway like a lost child. Finally he seemed to reach the same conclusion as the Georgian had and started walking towards his dorm room. He figured Christian would follow since he probably had no where better to go, either.

Rutilio only paused to give one last glance back at his baby brother's dorm room before quietly turning down the corner out of sight.

The State of Tennessee
Andrew S. Hickory

Tennessee had been talking to Massachusetts and inviting her in the house when suddenly California railroaded passed him, nearly knocking the Volunteer to the side as he shoved George Christian and Rutilio outside. The boy gawked in surprise at the venom that Landon and his brother were all but spitting at each other while Florida remained uncharacteristically silent. What on earth was going on?

Andrew wasn't quite sure if it was his place to get involved, though. It was an unnerving display and he wasn't too happy about it, but the Tennessean could only stand back out of the way with Leah and the other innocent bystanders. Finally, as the smoke began to clear, he glanced at Leah.

"... Nevermind. I think the party is prob'ly ending..." he muttered uncertainly.

Landon just stood there in the threshold of the door, glaring right through Leah and Andrew as if they weren't even there. He was still trembling from the raw fury of having twice been denied something dear to him. First the movie, and now this. He could have survived the former, but the latter would take many long years to get used to. And that was assuming he would ever get used to it. It had seemed that, in one fell swoop, the easy rapier between the two biggest American entertainers, as well as the newest Bad Touch Trio, had been shattered beyond foreseeable repair.

After he had glared enough daggers into the retreating couple, California finally took notice of the two states who were gawking at him in amazement. It was well-founded, for not even Florida, it seemed, could ever remember seeing him so angry.

Landon turned his flaming gaze on Drew and Leah for almost fifteen seconds before finally remembering that they were not the enemies here. He forced himself to calm down, and massaged the skin between his eyes wearily. "It might be better if you all just left, Tennessee, Massachusetts," the Westerner sighed. "Here, take some wine with you for your trouble... I'll see you all tomorrow.. I'd appreciate it if you helped me clean up," he added, almost as an afterthought.
