Aisling bristled a little at that running commentary. "It's no' like I could jus' run down tae th' market or such tae buy bedsheets or anythin'," she said, more than a bit defensively. "An' there's no-one I could send either, since I'm no' askin' m' family for any help - they already do too much as i' 'tis!"

Oh, hey now, no need to get defensive... Lee slumped over, hiding within herself a bit at Aisling's response. It wasn't exactly what she was expecting, so she took a moment to gather herself and think of a response -- we don't want to upset the girl further. "It's not that you need to or anything. If you like your bedsheets how they are, that's fine, but if it's just that you can't get new ones... I mean, I could help with that."

Aisling bit her lip, her eyes brightening a bit. "I'm sorry," she said, green eyes looking a bit dim as she apologized. " I know you didnae mean anythin' bad, it's jus' there's only so much I can' do. . .. . and I donnae really like takin' anyone's help, either, not from my family . .. . and not from someone I'd like tae call a frien' someday," she admitted softly.

Lee laughed a bit, clearly uncomfortable and unsure now, but shrugged and shook her head to let Aisling know she didn't think much of it. "Friends do each other favors all the time, though. You can take help from people you can help back." She hoped that made more sense to Aisling than it did to her. Being less of a giver than a taker, Lee herself didn't quite see things from the other girl's perspective.

Aisling shrugged, tilting her head a bit. Aye, I know, bu' there's no' much I can do f'r anyone in return." she said quietly, her frustration with herself utterly clear in her voice.

Lee shrugged a bit, thinking for a moment, trying to find something Aisling could do for others. She smiled uncomfortably at the realization that she couldn't come up with a single thing. "Well, what're you good at?" There had to be more talents within her than just trick riding, right?

Aisling shrugged, her eyes dimming. "I was good wi' th' horses, an' tha' was all. Ne'er had any other talents," she said softly, turning her gaze to scan the interior of her gloomy little vardo. "I always knew I wan'ed tae be a trick rider, an' tha's all I ever had any sort o' talent in -- no' tha' I tried too hard in many other areas..." Really, her riding had been the only thing she'd truly been good at in her life, and it had been taken from her. There just wasn't anything good left for her. By this point, Aisling was fully convinced that she'd live and die a cripple on her own, only managing to make it as she had through the pity of her family - because, stubborn as she was, she took her family's concern and saw it as pity rather than what it really was, just a family looking out for their daughter.

Lee laughed, only some of her nervousness showing through, as she shrugged and sat forward. "I'm not really good at much, either. And even the things I like to do I kinda suck at. But I'm trying to see if I might be any good at making clothes, even though I dun have any experience with all that. You're sorta at the same place as me. We just need to find you something else you like. You're still young and all that, just because you can't move around doesn't mean there isn't plenty of stuff you can still do and become talented at." Surely horses weren't the absolute only thing Aisling liked.

Aisling shrugged, listening patiently but unable to think of anything she might be capable of. "All I e'er focused on wis horses. So I donnae know if I'd have any other talen's... e'en if I do," she said softly, starting to look more than a little depressed and down on herself once again.

Why wasn't Aisling excited? She was maybe, possibly getting to build a life for herself. Lee sighed under her breath, trying to think of a way to show the other teenager that just because her movement was limited didn't mean her life was over. Fidgeting for a bit, she figured the only way to go about it was to test different things the girl could be good at. "Have... have you ever painted? Or I guess maybe made a carving of your own?" If her father was a great artist, surely Aisling carried over some of that talent.

Aisling bit her lip and was about to respond in the negative when Riley burst through the door, this time not even bothering to knock. The little girl ran over to Aisling and almost knocked her backwards onto the bed, cling to her and sobbing her little heart out. Glancing at Lee worriedly for a moment, Aisling set about soothing her sister and trying to figure out what's wrong. "Now, weean, 's all righ', 'm here, jus' calm down . . ."
After a few moments, the little girl calmed down enough to wipe at her eyes and speak around shuddering gasps. "They took Daddy 'way, sis'er! Th' p'lice men took Daddy away, an' Mama said she doesnae know when he'll come home!" Aisling's eyes darkened and she closed them for a moment, tugging Riley to sit next to her and patting her hair a little. As much of a shock as it came to Riley, Aisling wasn't surprised in the least -- what she was surprised about was that their mother was still there.
The outsider police weren't known to be kind to the didikai, after all, whether they were women or children. So she just kept calming Riley down, focusing most of her attention on her guest-of-sorts. "Nae, I'm no good wi' paintin' or carvin. I tried the firs' once and it didnae turn out well. An' when I tried carvin' I nearly cut off'n a finger." Still patting Riley's hair, she winced and pulled the little girl into her lap, starting to rock her. "An' Riley, Da' will come home someday, donnae give up on 'im ,alrigh'?"

Please, tell her she heard the little girl wrong... Was she seriously talking about her father being imprisoned? Eyes wide, Lee looked from Riley to Aisling and back, unable to say anything out of shock. This was none of her business, she honestly shouldn't be around to have heard that. Quelling any curiosity and resisting the urge to ask any "what"s or "why"s, Lee bit her lip and focused her gaze on her lap. "I... I should prolly go, shouldn't I?" It was less that she wanted to and more that... it really didn't seem right to stay, considering how little she knew either of these girls. She wouldn't be able to offer any comfort, and couldn't begin to empathize in such a situation.

Aisling tilted her head a bit and thought for a long moment before sighing. "Ye donnae hav' tae, bu' y'r Rory's prob'ly goin' tae be done wi' work soon, an' ye'll wan' tae be there tae greet him," she said, still softly rocking her baby sister and trying to calm the little girl down. Aisling bit her lip and sighed.

"I... I guess I will... I..." Lee sunk in her seat and rubbed her forehead a bit before hopping to her feet as quickly as she could. "Sorry. I mean, for..." What was she sorry about? She really didn't know. Hm. This was awkward. "Yeah. Bye." Shrugging her shoulders in a failed effort to disappear completely, Lee skittered off toward the vardo door, regretting having intruded into Aisling's home like this. While a small part of her wanted to feel sorry for Riley, Lee was much too busy wishing she were anywhere but here.

"Wait!" Aisling called before Lee could completely make her way out of the vardo. A weak, hesitant smile made its way onto her face as she looked at her fellow teen, and she spoke hesitantly while she continued to rock Riley. "I...... than's f'r everythin' t'day, really..... we shoul'........... shoul'................... try again sometime, maybe?" It was weak, but it was all she could really manage. She'd lost every skill she had at making friends when she'd let her bitterness and pride swallow her whole.
