Getting paralyzed was annoying. Emilia lied face down in the dirt, cursing, and worrying about her young master. The girl had the gall to incapacitate her only functional guard, and engage an enemy of unknown strength. By herself! If her aim was to strike fear and anger upon her guardian, it had certainly worked.
Though, it wasn’t like that mattered at the moment. Who cared for the emotions of a knight who couldn’t move? The only person who knew of the situation was probably focused on the task in front of her. And the only person nearby was asleep. Thus far, he had proven to be mostly useless. As when the first real enemy had come along, he wasn’t awake to fight her. This would anger her as well, if he was being paid anything worthwhile.
As she thought about the man, she heard him shake in his sleep. What had once been a peaceful rest turned violent, as the man dreamt horrid dreams. She could only see him out of the corner of her eye, but she could easily tell he was hopping around like a fish.
“Run…” he mumbled.
She would tell him to snap out of it. If she could move her jaw, tongue, or activate her voice, she’d wake him. But these basic abilities were taken away with the rest of her movement.
“Run… Run… Run, run, run, run! Run away! Get away!” the dream ejected him into reality, and he sat up punching the air, breathing heavily. “Smiling… Laughing! Uh… What happened here?”
Larose observed the unmoving body of Emilia, and drew his mind back from the dream world. Cera wasn’t present, the smell of fire was in the air, and Emilia was asleep. No, she only seemed asleep, as she wasn’t able to move, but her aura showed she was awake, and there was magic in her system that didn’t belong there.
“Where’s Cera?” he asked, tapping her on the back and casting a dispel.
“Somewhere, probably nearby.” Emilia answered, glad to be able to hear her own voice. Standing up, she looked around to find the area to be just as unfamiliar as before.
“I assume she had something to do with the burning trees?”
Emilia looked at a nearby burning tree. Then at the ground beside it. Only a single set of footprints, that seemed to belong to a child. There was no physical evidence of anyone else following, but that meant very little.
As she began to follow them, Larose burst down the trail at full speed, in a fashion you wouldn’t expect from a man who had just stayed up the entire night. Emilia was hard pressed to follow at the speed he ran.
“She left a lot of things burning in her wake.” Larose commented.
Emilia ignored him.
“Whenever a woman wants to take a walk, they always leave a path of destruction. Either I’ve only met the destructive type, or women are crazy.”
A this comment, Emilia drew her halberd and used it’s hook like property to trip the man. In his state of being only half awake, he couldn’t avoid it, and fell face first into a tree.
“You can go back to sleep now.”
Only moments later, she saw Cera, being pinned by the enemy. In a half a second, she had drawn and thrown a javelin and thrown it at the assailant. The silver haired one was just as quick to dodge, releasing Cera and suffering a cut on the left side of her head. From cheek to ear, her smile had been widened. And she didn’t seem too happy about it.
“It’s a good thing you’re obnoxiously loud.” Silver scowled, holding her jaw where she had been struck.
“I’ve no business with you.” Emilia stated, walking forward and drawing her halberd. “So hurry up and die.”
“Can’t die in front of my new sister. And definitely can’t fail n-” Silver’s faced turned to that of a woman in agony, as she switched her hand from her jaw to her ear. Shortly after, she lost her balance and fell to her knees, cursing under her breath.
“Don’t want to listen to any nonsense you’re spewing. Lets just consider ‘can’t fail’ your last words.” Emilia then prepared for a strike to the woman’s throat. As Silver knelt in agony from some strange form of attack.
“What did you-”
“My javelins are specially designed to destroy an enemy’s concentration, to a point where they can’t move. You’re not the first to feel this, and won’t be the last.” Emilia began the final strike. But Silver disappeared before it could hit, seemingly into midair. Cera could sense an illusion dissipating. “Larose!”
“Ready!” the man yelled, tripping over a root and tumbling into Emilia’s leg. His exhaustion had effected his coordination quite a bit.
“You’re not fit to pursue the enemy. Take Cera and get to the town as quickly as possible. I’ll be along soon.”
“Why do I need to be taken?” Cera complained.
“Because your safety is top priority.” Emilia then ran off in pursuit of the fleeing assassin.
Larose threw Cera over his shoulder before beginning the run to the town. Cera attempted to paralyze him upon getting handled, again to no avail. Two of the five people she had tried it on thus far had resisted it. Cera expected more from a spell learned from Entrice. A god’s spell getting resisted by so many people. Why couldn’t she of resisted it?
“I’ve a resistance to that spell that you won’t be able to overcome. At least not in your state.” Larose sighed.
“Get off of me!” Cera said, not knowing quite how to respond.
“Can’t quite do that. I’d prefer to get into town as quickly as possible, and I doubt you can run as fast as me.”
Cera then noted how fast they were going. Everything was passing by as if a blur. Though with her current position, all she could see were the trees and the ground. Very annoyed, she began kneeing him in the stomach.
“Then if you’re going to carry me, do it right!”
She then kicked him in the leg as they reached the road. And he toppled onto his face, sending Cera flying a small ways. Of course Cera was quick to blame this on Larose.
“Where are you from anyway?” She said, standing up and brushing herself off. “You another Decrian swine? Or are you a new form of insult to somewhere else?”
He merely stood up, and brushed himself off. The amount of attention he could pay was extremely limited due to his exhaustion. His only want was to get into the town, and doze off. Though Cera was bound to make that difficult.
“Well, now that I’m on the road, it should be easy.” Cera scoffed, running off in a direction at random. “You’re no longer needed!”
The direction she began to head off in was the wrong way. It took a few moments for Larose to realize the direction she had run off in. As soon as he did, though, he gave chase, quickly catching up. When Cera noticed him gaining, she stopped and placed her foot in his path, causing him to trip yet again.
“Other… Way…” Larose remarked, laying on his face.
“You could have told me that earlier.” she responded, turning and walking in the opposite direction. The will to run had been drained, for some odd reason.
Larose again got up and brushed himself off. Upon turning, he saw Cera walking at a pace unbecoming of the haste that was needed. It took less then a second for him to catch up. But his real intention was to get in front of her, and allow her to get on his back.
“There’s no time for walking. Get on my back.”
“Very well.” she responded, placing her foot on his back, and proceeding to walk over him.
“You said I should carry you right.” Larose sighed. “Allow me to do so?”
“As if I’d allow you to carry me again.” Cera scoffed. “Closest you’ll get is me standing on your back.”
Noting that she was indeed standing on his back, he twisted a small bit causing her legs to fall to either side. After that, he stood up, grasping her legs under his arms, and forcing her upon his back. He could now feel the injuries that had occurred to her. Apparently she hadn’t only been struck on the face.
“Wha?” Cera asked, noticing she was now upon his back. “Get off of me!”
He wasn’t going to listen to her commands. They needed to get to the town, and Cera was slow. So off he ran, as fast as humanly possible, with a child who didn’t like being carried upon his back. And she wasn’t being quiet or well behaved.
“Get off of me!” she demanded, repetitively slapping him upside the head.
He continued to ignore her to the best of his abilities. She would calm down eventually if he didn’t let her get to him. It had worked with En before. And Quinn before that. Cera’s wrath was nothing when compared to either of those two…
“Bandit! Pervert! Demon!” Cera continued to attack Larose, to little avail. “Let me go!”
He was getting more tired with every strike. There was now doubt that he would make it to the town awake. He attempted to stay awake with every fiber of his being. His legs were moving, his head was throbbing, and his mind…
“How many times did you get hit?” Larose asked, noting the feeling of blood that wasn’t coming from her face. Due to the fact he was feeling it on his back, he could only assume she got hit somewhere on the torso.
Cera was hit off her guard by this. She had forgotten that she had even been hit once, and knew that she was otherwise unharmed.
“Uh… What makes that your business?”
“You seem to be bleeding… Somewhere. And as one of your current guardians-”
“Emilia, Clairene, and Julia are my guardians.” Cera sighed. “You’re just some second rate mercenary who’s filling in.”
“Well, as a mercenary who’s filling in, I’m concerned for your well being.”
“And I didn’t get hit anywhere. The only blood coming out of me is on my face, which anyone with eyes could see. What makes you think it’s blood?”
A point he hadn’t taken into consideration yet. He didn’t mind blood, and was hoping that it would be that simple. But there had been rain, and water wasn’t rare. And the feeling was coming from the lower part of her torso…
“Please tell me you haven’t decided to use my back as a bathroom.” Larose sighed.
“What are you talking about, pervert? I think I would have…”
Cera had no idea what was going on. Larose was just as clueless. Though the fact remained that there was an odd sensation on his back, that he didn’t know the cause of. And there was something frightening about it. So as quickly as he had gotten her on his back, he threw her off. Shortly after, as the sensation was now coming from his shirt, he removed it and set it on fire.
He then checked the place on his back where it had been felt. Quick examination would reveal that it wasn’t water, and wasn’t quite blood, but something else entirely. Something he couldn’t possibly explain, as it wasn’t like anything he’d seen before. It didn’t have a magical feel…
Upon turning to look at Cera, he found her curled up in a ball, crying. As he knelt over to ask her what was wrong, a strong force collided with his head, knocking whatever force keeping him awake out. Emilia had emerged from the woods to find a shirtless man and a crying girl. It was only natural that she take a swing at the man’s head with the pole end of her halberd.

Silver sat within a clearing, grasping her ear in pain. That knight was a pain, and somewhat of a bloodhound. Silver was a professional escape artist, and she needed help getting away successfully. She honestly didn’t think she would need to rely on the two vultures that laid in wait.
“I’m going to get in trouble for returning without both of them,” she sighed. “Without the girl, and down a harpy? My, my, I’m down on my luck.”
On top of that, she wasn’t in good shape either. Her left arm had received a few strikes, and her legs had recently given out from the number of injuries on them. It had decided that there would be no more moving until she was healed. Even if the second harpy could still carry her.
“Didn’t your parents tell you not to play with your food?” A voice came from behind a tree.
“Parents? Who’s to say I ever had any?”
“Oh, right. You’re an orphan.” the figure that had been speaking came out from behind the tree, but remained in the shadow. “What about your parental figures? I know I’m not related to the master, but she taught me proper manners.”
“The lucky children occasionally got told to shut up.” Silver sighed. “The rest didn’t hear from our caretakers.”
“No wonder you’re so uncivilized. No properly trained being would fail in a circumstance where success was all but given to her.”
“What about your job then, En?”
The figure then stepped out of the shadow, smiling. En seemed rather out of place for someone lurking in the shadows.
“Carson and Est have been killed.” En placed her hand over her face. “Honestly, high priests are supposed to be archmagi. And arch magi aren’t supposed to be easy to kill.”
“Then your next job should be easy?”
“My master isn’t as weak as the others.” En removed her hand and sighed. “Why do you think we’re setting a trap?”
“I’m unaware that there’s been a trap set up.” Silver said, placing her hand on the floor and attempting to stand up. “Shouldn’t you… Be somewhere near it?”
“The Melody Manor isn’t too far away.”
“You turned that place into a trap?”
“Andreas did. The dark aura currently surrounding it is the bait.” En began to laugh. “The nature of it will constantly weaken her as she searches for the source. And then she’ll have to properly handle the source, which will take a great toll on her abilities. After all that, I should be able to take her on by myself.”
“How is the dark aura bait? Who in their right mind would be drawn into that?”
“My master’s quite odd. She accidentally created the source of that aura, and if she finds out that it’s there, she’s going to want to stop it.”
Silver nodded, and laid down. Let the girl and her master go at each others throats. If one died, the world wouldn’t miss anything. Little En Venom wasn’t anything but a thousand faced freak, and Eldeen wasn’t worth the trouble she caused. It would be better if En won, as Silver’s work would be made easier. But, at the same time, Silver couldn’t care less if En was killed.
“But it will be a while before she shows up.” En said, walking over to the silver haired woman. “So I figure I’ll help you out with your other targets in the mean time. After all, Cera wanted to save me. And that idiot Larose is by her side still brandishing the shard.”
Silver merely waved her off with her only uninjured limb. She didn’t need help. Or… She didn’t need any of the help this girl could offer.
“That attitude says to me that you don’t want my help. Which is kind of odd, as you’re injured to a point where you can’t stand.” En sighed. “What kind of idiot dismisses a healer when she’s injured in such a way?”
“I’ll heal soon enough. Don’t need your help in that, Venom.”
“I prefer En. Not Venom, Envenom, or En Venom.” En then stepped on Silver’s chest. “If you insist on calling me Venom, I’ll show you just how venomous I can be.”
Staring down at the woman, En smiled. Two of the teeth on her upper row turned black, and grew out like fangs. The tips of her fingers also turned sharp and black, mimicking claws.
“The true curse of the shards. Why you’re called a demon.” Silver yawned, pushing En’s foot off her chest. “That’s not a threat, my dear Venom. I know how you use those. The fact that they’re sharp means little. You‘re real power come first and foremost from magic, not your little claws.”
En then wrapped her fingers around the woman’s neck. There was no attempt to resist it.
“It really is a shame. Master blessed me with these magnificent demonic fangs, and… I don’t bite. Blood does not taste good at all.”
“It’s an acquired taste.” Silver said, grabbing hold of En’s wrist. “Very well, En. Heal me, if you will.”
En smiled, and the abnormalities about her bodies retracted. She quickly began to quickly heal Silver’s legs. Then her arm. Then her face. In a few moments, the assassin was completely healed, and standing up.
“Shall we take care of the three now?” En sang as she walked to the road. “The knight, the girl, and the Vagabond. Their blood shall shine like the sea at dawn. And if by chance you hear their screams! You’ll know that En Venom is very mean.”
Silver followed, thinking only that this girl was demented. Of all the crazy mages from the upper worlds, she had to get stuck with the crazy one.

“And then will come the nice young lor’,
With bodyguard and harpy whore.
They try to use a sly disguise,
But that will be their own demise.
Following suit will be my master.
To find accursed alabaster.
Then like a poisonous lurking snake,
I’ll come on out and swiftly sedate.”
The two were nearing the town at this point in En’s demented song. The villagers looked upon them with suspicion. Silver walked with caution because of it, but En ignored them completely. Well… Not completely.
“And now I see these village goers,
Significant as the useless glow worms.
I’d kill them without hesitation,
But that would cause no great elation.”
“You’re annoying.” Silver said, getting annoyed of the girl’s singing.
“I’m only having a little fun.” En responded, looking at the villagers who fled from her gaze. “It’s quite entertaining, having people run away just because you sing about killing them.”
Silver merely shrugged and continued following, glad for an end to the song. It wasn’t far too long before En stopped out front of a closed playhouse, taking notice of the doors being slightly open.
“Now isn’t the time to be stealing stage props.” Silver said, looking at the girl with disapproval.
“Not props, people. It seems that they’re in here.”
“How would you know?”
“I know two of the auras inside. One belongs to little Cera, and the other to Larose. There is a third, but it’s just your average aura, and could belong to anybody.”
“The knight?” Silver asked.
“I assume so.” En said, walking in. Silver merely followed out of habit. As soon as they entered the theatre, they hid behind a chair.
Upon the stage, Emilia stood garbed in plain brown clothing, looking at two sleeping figures. One of them was Larose, without his swords but with a new brown shirt. And the other seemed to be Cera, but the face was shrouded somewhat by illusion, and the hair was more grey then Cera’s normal hair color. She was lying on top of Larose’s swords, Emilia’s spears, and Emilia’s armor. Larose’s second sword was firmly within her grasp.
“That’s quite amusing.” En whispered, looking at Cera. “Both of the darker sides of the curse have overtaken her. She’s growing up slightly faster then she should, and is suffering from the dark metal.”
Silver was ignoring En for the most part, while attempting to sneak toward the stage. En, however, grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
“We have plenty of time. In the mean time, I think I’ll educate you as to the three people up on that stage.” En pointed at Cera. “She’s cursed by the shard. Which means she was changed by the shard. The first symptom of this curse is magical power, and that’s the only part you generally see. The second, however, is the fact she will be aging somewhat faster.”
“And the third is your fangs and claws?”
“The third is the dark metal, that comes around in times of emotional instability.” En sighed. “It usually doesn’t come out as fangs or claws. I’m a special case, as my master found a way to manipulate it. With Cera, however, the black metal would grow inside her body, and get into places it shouldn’t. This usually ends up killing the cursed one, though.”
“So why isn’t she dead?”
“Same reason he isn’t dead. They’re both cursed, but they’ve both been saved. The shard’s third curse of death usually only occurs to those who lose possession of the shard. The shard dispels this part of the curse to keep it’s host alive, but once it leaves them, they die.”
“Odd curse.” Silver sighed.
“Quite. Though, as I said before, the curse only comes into effect in times of emotional instability. Larose could probably go months before it came into effect. But Cera is becoming a woman. Her life will be in danger every few weeks because of it. The reason she’s grasping onto the shard right now is because it’s dispelling the dark metal.”
“All very interesting.” Silver whispered in a sarcastic manner.
“I suppose nothing interesting has happened in her life yet. Even if she was made an avatar at birth, nobody expected anything until she became a woman. I suppose one of the other two would be more interesting… Perhaps Larose. He’s three years older.”
Silver paused for a moment, doing the math. If Cera was twelve, and Larose was three years older, that meant….
“He can’t b-”
En quickly covered Silver’s mouth to keep her from giving away their position.
“He’s fifteen. I know he looks older, but do recall, the curse makes people age faster.”
“But you look sixteen.” Silver said, removing En‘s hand. “And last I heard, you’re sixteen.”
“You age faster the longer you’re in contact with it. He’s held onto it constantly for the last two years, and looks quite a bit older because of it.” En sighed. “I was in contact with it for a few seconds, just long enough for the curse to take me. With me and Cera, the difference is only a few months.”
Silver simply sat there, contemplating how the girl sitting in front of her was older then the man unconscious on the stage.
“Well, in any case…” En continued. “I know Larose there personally. Two years ago I found him lying in a pool of blood outside of a town hall in Toleris. His master had decided to work for a gang that had taken control of the territory. He refused to follow, and was attacked by the other two students serving under the corrupted master.
“So I healed him, sympathized, and helped him bring down the entire gang. My master had merely told me to give the shard to the group, but I figured that this kid would be easier to keep tabs on. So I helped him bring down the gang in the most spectacular series of bloodbaths, ending in a battle against his master.
“So I held off his two classmates while he took on the old man. Of course, little Larose had the power of the shard on his side, so he won rather quickly. And the other two ran away after seeing their master fall. Quite the display of cowardice, if I do say so myself.
“Odd part was it was all a test from my master to Larose’s master. She had told him that the shard would be falling into the gang’s hand, and that if he wanted it, all he had to do was get it. After telling Larose this, he swore to find all the shards so that they could never fall into the wrong hands.”
En then began to grin a very wide grin.
“More recently, after finding out Cera had the shard’s curse, I stirred some rumors in Toleris that a shard was present in Melody Manor. And, like magic, he just showed up.”
“So you’re the one who made my job harder?” Silver asked.
“It worked out for the better, though. His presence may have saved Cera’s life. And I do believe your job would be made easier by having a living target, no?”
“This curse seems like more trouble then it’s worth.”
“Truly. But…” En then pointed at the knight in normal clothing. “The most trouble at the moment is her. Emilia, at twenty two years of age. Born and raised in fort Turpent, for the sake of being a female warrior. There was a group of twelve girls going through the exact same training. The first few years of their lives was constant brainwashing, telling them they were not but soldiers. From the time they could walk, to the time they grew up, it was constant physical training. The four years after that, constant magical training.
“They received little time to rest, no compassion, and harsh punishments. Of the twelve, Emilia’s the only one who survived the training. As the one with the most training, she was placed in command of all the other female warriors within Empyria. Ten knights of elite status, and a couple dozen soldiers were placed under her for the sake of warfare.
“Then, after it all, they were never allowed to go into battle. Emilia was locked inside the fort and told by a letter that she would be assigned to guard a mere child. Two hours later, she broke open the main gate with her bare hands, before collapsing from exhaustion. She didn’t wake up for a week, didn’t stand up for a month, and couldn‘t grasp anything for five months.
“Throughout the entire time, Cera never left her side. The child’s nurse had just died, and she had attached to this knight as if it was a mother figure. I truly wish I had been there to see this odd union.”
“Any more stories to waste my time with?” Silver asked.
“I’m sure you know all about Cera right now, so…”
“Twelve.” Silver started. “Female. Cursed. Raised by a nurse, who died when she was eight. Ever since, she has been raised by three knights.”
“You’re not much of a storyteller, are you?”
“I don’t have the patience for this.” Silver sighed.
“Very well,” En whispered with a smile. “Follow me…”
En then burst out into the aisle, and ran towards the stage. Silver quickly followed, without a second of thought. Such a truly novice mistake on her part, though.
“Help!” En yelled. “She’s trying to kill me!”

Yush. She's a very big antagonist. And is just coming into the story with her insanity.
Though she's only out to play at the moment.
