Richard smiled a bit as he silently ate his food. He didn't want to show how hungry he really was, so he ate moderately slowly and cautiously, occasionally glancing up at Lorey with a bit of blush on his cheeks. She was so good to him, he felt a little guilty. A man with his past didn't deserve such an angle. Not that she didn't make him happy...that was the problem. He didn't want ot risk her safety because of something as silly as his own feelings. But he tried to to focus on such negative things, since it always seemed to radiate. He was quite aware of it when he started to pick at his eggs a bit concerned. Though not wanting to worry Lorey, He faked a smile and sipped a bit more on his coffee.

Lorey was quiet, too, though her thoughts kept going over to the music box she had salvaged from her apartment. Whether it was conscious or not, her eyes kept glancing over to the small box on the table just over Richard's shoulder.
I should be honest with him, after all he's done.
"So, remember how I said that I left my apartment this morning?" she began quietly. "I... I don't know how to feel."

Richard stopped eating, setting his fork down. He hadn't thought of how upset Lorey may have been about leaving her home. A whole new wave of guilt washed over him as he looked up sympathetically. "Are you going to be alright?" He asked concerned as he looked at her with concerned eyes. "I realize it must have been tough..." He kept looking at her, wanting to show that he was genuinely here for her. He felt horrible. He didn't think about how hard it would have been for her to leave home.

How to even begin?
"I was falling short on payments for months. It was only a matter of time, really." Lorey seemed overly concentrated on the napkin on her lap for a few moments before speaking again. "I don't know. I saw it coming, then the whole mess at the ballroom happened and..." A sad smile broke through, small and forced. "Not like I lived in a palace anyhow."

Without thinking, Richard stood and came near her, taking her delicate chin in his large hand. "A princess like you deserves a palace and much much more..." He defended, looking her dead in the eye. He couldn't figure out what was driving him, or what he would do next, but it all seemed right somehow. "Lorey, I'm sorry...I find it unbearable to think of all the trouble and hardships you've faced throughout your life...You're a strong, kind woman..." He added, looking at her with a dead seriousness that still radiated kindness.

Lorey looked back at him with both gratitude and a deeper sadness. She knew almost nothing about him, but what did it matter? Who he was right then was all that she saw, and all she would think of.
"And I can't imagine what you've gone through. You're still so wonderful, Richard, but I can always find sadness in your eyes." Lorey, much like him, found herself touching his small cuts and deep bruises, driven by some feeling inside her. It's unbearable for me, too."

Richard's heart let out a sharp pain that throbbed up to his throat. In one swift movement, he took her hand to get her to stand, toppling over the chair in the process. He felt as if he were sitting outside of his body, watching helplessly as his heart spoke for him. Lorey cared for him like no one had since... His heart wretched more. As if in attempt to make it stop, he brought Lorey close and closed his eyes slightly. He hesitated, but only for a moment, before he gently but passionately pressed his lips against hers.

Although the journey from her seat to her feet was a blur, Lorey understood enough once his lips found hers. Her arms wrapped around his neck during the moment.
The overwhelming knowledge that she was no longer alone brought tears to her eyes once she puled away slightly.
"Richard..." she said. "I'm so glad you found me." Soon her tears were accompanied by her soft laughter as she cupped his cheek, making sure not to hurt him before she kissed him once more.

Richard's heart exploded into a horrid pain, that was followed by a racing flow of relief. For that brief moment, all his thoughts subsided and there was no pain. Just Lorey...
when she pulled away to express herself, Richard felt his heart start up again, aching for her touch again. He smiled softly as well as her lips came to his a second time.
He pulled her waist closer to him with one hand, while he other gingerly and carefully made it's way to her face, then through her hair. He didn't notice, but his eyes as well started to water up. when one finally split over, running down his cheek, he broke away, breathing heavily and blood red. "I-i-i'm sorry..." he stuttered, releasing her slightly. He turned away, ashamed at his own reaction to the situation.

"Don't be." She could easily deduce that his tears were similar to hers. An almost heart-stopping wave of affection came over her as she placed her hand behind his head, gently suggesting that he bring it to her shoulder.
"You're not alone, Richard. We're not alone. And I don't ever want you to feel guilty... I don't ever want you to forget." Lorey made a point not to make any direct mention to 'her,' as it might only make the situation worse.

Richard furrowed his brow. How well she knew him from just meeting yesterday was beyond him. He swallowed hard and turned to look her in the eye. "I don't wan to you to get hurt....I don't want to be responsible for losing another love..." He admitted, rubbing his temples as he tried to fight the urge of holding her. "Stay away from me Lorey...I'm no good for you...." He forced out, trying to do the right thing. He cared far too much for Lorey for her to suffer the same fate as Rose. He also didn't think his heart could take another loss such as that.

Well, that just made her downright mad.
"I refuse!" After everything he had done for her, and especially after bringing her to her feet for a beautiful kiss, she was not going to lose him. "I am not going to let go of something again, I've done that enough!" Even when she was mad, though, she somehow managed kindness when she came closer to him again. "Richard, you're the most fantastic thing to ever happen to me. I want to see you smile and be happy, I want to see you stop hurting... please." Again she reached out for him in the hopes he would open his heart just once more.

Richard felt like he had heard all this before. His mind shut out for a moment. He turned, a bit angry himself and took Lorey gently by the arms. "It's not that easy! It's just that you're going to get hurt around me. I've done some things that I regret that are still following me for revenge!" He admitted, his eyes full of past woe and heartache. "If you got caught in the cross fire, I wouldn't be able to live with myself Rose!" He cried, not realizing his mistake of calling her by the name Rose.

With that one word, Lorey understood nearly everything.
"Richard... I'm not..." Her throat closed up just a bit. "I'm not Rose."

Richard looked at her for a moment, not know what she meant until all at once he realized. He became silent as his eyes widened. he released her arms, taking a step back. "I-i'm sorry....I-" his breathing became a bit more shallow as his eyes darted around the room, as if he didn't recognize where he was for moment. He fell back into a near by chair, fishing into his pocket, pulling out a cigarette and lighter. His hands shook violently as he attempted to ignite the small white stick. Richard had picked up smoking and heavy drinking after his wife died. He usually kept these habits under control, but sometimes he couldn't help himself and gave in to his nerves.
Richard could only imagine Lorey's impression on him now. After thinking he was some grand hero, he turns out to be a burdened old man with a questionable past.
