Ok, so I'm not the only one who found a plot hole in the fact that Ty Lee made friends with Kyoshi Warriors in a place where there were NONE. HURRR, Mike and Bryan, way to go. Should have had her making very good friends with MAI instead. I mean, really Ty Lee did just risk her life against Azula and gave up her freedom for her, no big deal, right?
The Maiko was way too easy and pulled together. There was so much business there that was left undone. let's count, shall we? 1. the fact that Mai basically called him a traitor in BR and came back to him all rainbows and sparkly things! 2. she forgives him for leaving her, twice? 3. He forgives her for being so condescending? 4. She gets out of prison by way of her uncle...who would rather DIE than see traitors of the Nation let out of his prison? 5. furthermore, he was swayed by the fact that his niece's boyfriend was the freakin' banished/traitor prince who took back the throne after the overthrowing of lovable Ozai? 6. It wasn't ZUKO who ordered her release? He seemed awfully surprised to see her...
Feel free to add to the list, lol!
And I also agree with the Kataang kiss looking like tonsil hockey. That's why it's so gross, it just looked WAAAAY to deep for a freaking 12/13 year old and a 15 year old...fadsfjsdaalkfjas sooooo not right. Even the kiss in Aang's dream was more age appropriate.
Ok, think about it, If she's 15, that's the same age as freakin' Mai. 15 is like, the beginning of the older teen years. That just puts it further into perspective. Katara gets to be about 15 in the show, but Aang still acts like a 10 year old. Yes, I'm aware I said 10. It wasn't a mistake. burning_eyes
With age comes maturity, which Aang has none? COMPLETE AGREEMENT.
Kid needs to grow up before he fantasizes about tonsil hockey, Jeeeeez. Does he even know where babies come from?? xd

What you guys said = trufax X 100 000 000.
Kataang? Wouldn't work. Too much immaturity, no benefit on either side, no chemistry at all (except the dance scene, but, well, I'm calling that acting/heat of the moment). Tonsil Hockey + 12 year old = DO NOT WANT. Seriously. I mean, it's not just that Katara and Aang kissed (though I would've greatly preferred a simple hug), it's the way they kissed. First mutual kiss in a preteen kisses should be, you know, innocent. Not... Guuh. Dx
Maiko was about as well put together as a jigsaw puzzle freshly dumped from the box. In other words: not at all.. I mean, first off, it just happened. No explanation or proper foreshadowing or well explained back story. Just, "Oh, Mai and Zuko had a crush on each other when they were, like, eight. They must be soulmates! 8D"
No, Bryke, I'm sorry. It does not work that simply. Plus, the fact that they spent every moment together sucking face, and ended up in a shouting match (or, well, as much of a shouting match as you can get into with Mai) every time they tried to talk, pretty much proves that they're incompatible or at least horribly written. Add on to that the mind-boggling nonsense of the finale scene (Which Teh Sheba summarized awesomely well. =D), and you get one poorly slapped together relationship.
Way to go, Bryke! You wrote horrid romance and probably set up young children for disappointment and confusion in many of their future relationships. Might wanna change that line from your Book 4 short. C8

Auuugh, the thing about Maiko is that, it WAS foreshadowed...But only as far as us seeing that cute little Mai had a crush on Zuko. But the thing I've told Kataangers time and time again, is that we never saw AYTHING to suggest that the crush was anything mutual. Oh sure, he saves her from a flaming apple in a cute and hilarious way, but that's really not because he's got a super-crush on her and wants to save her, OMG, it's because he's ZUKO, and that is what ZUKO does.
I do not see how one-sided puppy-love crush translates into ZOMGsoulmates. Like Kataang, it was incomplete before Bryke brought it into the full, face-sucking spotlight.
And shouting matches. Hooo, yeah, that's healthy. *eye roll*
As for preteen kisses, I totally agree. Tonsil Hockey is for later, more developed romance, not beginnning, especially at that age. Geez, I met my boyfriend when I was 13, but we didn't have our first kiss until I was 16 and he was 15, and even then, it was very innocent. I don't know what Mike and Bryan's problems are, but they made Katara and Aang particlularly...Guuuuuh. It's just not right on several levels. X(
I of course was FINE with the finale(with exception of the Crap maiko scene) as they zoomed out on the Kataang HUG. but then they went in again as Aang turned, and Katara turned, and--Bleh. It just seemed SO SET UP on top of everything. just the way they animated it. It was turn-turn-smooch, if you guys get what I'm saying.
Anyway, I would have been fine if they'd just left it as a hug, or even an innocent kiss. but the way they did it was just....no.

All of you have awesome points. There were so many plot holes and things that just didn't make sense. If I were Mai (even if I'm not a fan of her) I would never take back Zuko after he completly ditched me twice. Not only that, but the news had to have leaked out to everyone, so she must have been humiliated. Why the hell would they act like nothing happend and just suck face? Curse you plot bunnies!! >.>

It doesn't even help that Zuko's now Fire Lord while Ozai was kicked out. That would only ADD to Mai's WTF questions towards him. She STILL does not understand him, or what has happened to the nation, or what has happened to HIM, or any of its relevance. She understands none of it, but Hell if it matters when there is a Zuko there to smooch. She didn't even ask him what the heck happened to him to get his chest injured. :/
I'm still interested in seeing how she reacts when she finds out what that scar is from... twisted

I'm still interested in seeing how she reacts when she finds out what that scar is from... twisted Thing is, Mai is OBSESSED with Zuko. So it's in her character to just come crawling back. But I don't think it really did her justice as a character. It just made me see her as a spoiled, rich kid who was used to getting what she wanted. And I didn't like that. She would've had better development if she wasn't with Zuko, or none at all which I would've been fine with. I love Mai, just not with Zuko. And I really miss her Book 2 personality.

Apple-Sherbet I love Mai, just not with Zuko. And I really miss her Book 2 personality. Yeah, her book 2 personality wasn't so...flat. Their relationship should have ended at the episode: The Beach. It was THAT Mai that made you (not to mention myself) like her. "I was a little girl who always got everything I ever wanted. So long as I sat still. And didn't speak unless spoken to. My mother said that I had my Father's career to consider."It's like the second they LEFT Ember Island, all those feelings were washed out to the ocean and they fell right back into their usual selves. I swear, for a future con, I hope someone kicks Dumber and DumberER in the shins. Not for Zutara, not for stringing out "false" *does the finger quotation* evidence. But for the simple fact, that we were THIS *index and thumb mini motion* close to having an amazing piece of animation that actually came from America, and not Japan, Germany, Italy or what other place you can name. That poor bird crashed at the home stretch. I'm simply HOPING that someone comes up to them and says this: "Hey, you know your show Avatar?" *M&B smile smugly* "Course we do, not like we'll forget it." "Yeah....maybe you should have given the idea to a japanese animator to write the story." I'd friggen PAY to see their reactions. (Or just ask for my NYCC refund. First con EVER, and it was for a bunch of *insert bad word here* without *and here.*)

Yeah, NYCC was probably the biggest piece of F*cking bait they handed us. I mean, I knew that it was a trailer and that we didn't know the context of the whole "Katara backing out of a kiss and running into Zuko's arms thing," BUT HELL it must have been put there, in that order, for SOME reason. It takes two to tango, and two to have fans be baited; the fans, and the CREATORS. They knew what we wanted, and they used it, for what? Just to keep us watching for another couple of months? Which kind of pisses me off. They also then proceeded to say that "everyone would be happy with the end," right?
SDCC was even worse. I don't regret GOING, I only regret not WALKING OUT on those two. I suppose I was just shocked into my seat as well as clinging to some hope of them saving themselves before the Panel's end.
I used to believe that Avatar WAS the best animated Show from America. And it bloody was. But like you said, it just blew into a mess at the end. The creators went downhill in their fandom respect, and they left their story unfinished with so many plotholes it can keep a fan busy pointing them out all day, and romances that were so malformed and incompatable that over half their fans went to something else that they'd never thought of...nor want to think about.
I'm sorry, but you can have a MASTERPIECE that the world has never seen before, but if you're a giant *bleeeep*, then I can't appreciate it.
As for Mai, I LOVED her in season 2. She was the goth girl who really didn't want to do anything, and I can't help it, I love those gothy-types. But once she got included with Zuko, it just...AUGH. I can accept that she has feelings for him and everything, but it still doesn't mean they fit.
They didn't even seem to be childhood friends, and their relationship just...happened. :/
And I'm sorry, but Mai brings out Zuko's..."I don't care" side...Come on, "you're so beautiful when you hate the world?" *gag* We know that's healthy, her hating the world that Zuko's trying to put back together...She just makes him more boring. Which ISN'T Zuko. I love Mai, and I love Zuko, I LOVE their characters...
But put them together and I just want to GAG.
Put her together with TY LEE, however, and it creates an awesome Duo, whether you like Yuri or not! lol!
The ending actually did not do either Mai OR AANG any justice. They're both the ones with crushes on another, and in the end, it just kind of falls into their laps. I would have liked it if there would have been some sort of unrequitted love lesson in there. Like even a sort of love thing where Katara went with Aang, but Zuko'd fallen in love with HER, but Mai still loved HIM. Or, the other way around with Katara being in love with Zuko...or something, if you know what I'm getting at. I mean, that's one way that it would be solved if Avatar was an anime.
Something like that. because DAMMIT love is not always returned, and DAMNED if it just falls neatly into your lap like Mike and Bryan painted it. Love just happens, but seriously, with the problems Katara had, and the problems of Zuko and Mai not seeing eye to eye, it would need a BIT more work, or development, or TIME or SOMETHING!!
Tokka they say? No, they didn't even follow through with it. It had no closure, and did not get brought back into the spotlight to show Toph ACCEPTING that she could never be with SOKKA. At the end of the show, it just feels like some unnecesary thing about Toph that they threw in for the Hell of it.
It BLOODY annoys me when a character is so obsessed with someone like Aang and Mai are. They are the EPITOME of my annoyance(moreso Aang). Even more when they just get what they want without working for it. AT LEAST Mai made a sacrifice for Zuko, but I have yet to figure out what the Hell Aang did. It's like exactly what you said, they're spoiled and they want another human being to themselves, and the other person's feelings doesn't come into play(again, Moreso AANG). That is something I HATE.
...Yeah, I'm cutting this rant off now. I'm getting way too friendly with this soapbox... sweatdrop
FEEEEEL the Aang Hate....LMAO

I'm not one for Yuri, but I'd rather that Mai and Ty Lee had the hots for each other rather then Mai and Zuko. Because nothing says I-love-you like behind the scenes of Ember Island Wall-sex behind Zuko and Azula's back. xD
*Shot*
Er, ANYway. xp Yes, that was a Zutara-capslock joke turned into a Mai-lee rendition. *Cough*
You know, maybe that's how Toph got over her "Sokka-crush" yeah, she knew about Suki, and it might have dawned upon her that he might not like her. So, she did what the Avatar was mean't to do: Let Go. I mean, if she really does care about Sokka, she'd be willing to let him go so he could be happy with Suki, even if she is broken for a while.
But, this is Toph we're talking about. She's small, but she has a stronger foundation then most would give her credit.

( This pic kinda makes me like Maiko) I would've rather have left all shipping open ended. With no relationships actually being resolved, no matter how far or close to canon they were. Everyone could've gone home happy otherwise, and random people wouldn't get the whole "Oh you just hated the fnale because you is a Zootard" treatment.

On the unrequited love thing: Pakku/Kana. PAKKU/KANA. D8<
That was a one-sided, unrequited love type of pairing, and it worked just the way it was. But NO, bryke had to go and give Pakku exactly what he wanted, too. Can't have any of the big strong men not getting their dream women, can we?
Which seems to be a trend in Avatar. Girls are strong and indepentent in battles, yeah, but in relationships it seems like it's only the guy's wants that really matter - even with Maiko. Zuko still liked Mai, and he tried to explain things to her in the Boiling Rock and showed regret at leaving her in 310 (forget the episode title xP). Mai's feelings on the subject were expressed (she called him a traitor and didn't understand, yaddayaddayadda), but completely ignored in the finale - she just gave him instant forgiveness and didn't ask a singel question about what had happened while she was in prison.
Aang gets his dream girl (and keeps his conscience squeaky clean (except not, because he killed people at the North Pole, killed that buzzard-wasp int he desert, and killed those people in the air balloons during the failed invasion) and just has everything go perfectly for him), Sokka gets his dream girl (and every girl), Zuko gets his dream girl (or maybe Mai gets his dream girl? IDK. I thought Zutara was at least one-sided by the end of TSR), Pakku gets his dream girl, Roku gets his dream girl... That's, like, all the main male characters who had a love interest.
And, yeah. I was never a huge fan of Mai, but it wasn't until season three that I actually found myself hating her. And I really, really missed seeing Ty Lee! I mean, c'mon, that's what made Mai likable - the silly interaction she had with Ty Lee, and the whole polar-opposite BFFs vibe they had going on. You can't throw that to the side just because she's dating Zuko - that's exactly what an unhealthy teen relationship is like, when the people involved isolate themselves from their other friends.
Ugggh. I want more than anything to go to a Con, and either inform Bryke that the main points of their Finale (and most of season three) kinda failed, OR just ramble about how much I loved all the Zutara in it and how the lightning scene was my favourite and ask them to autograph my... whatever Zutara merchandise I get at that point. Basically just make them very, very confused and rub some Zutara faith in their face, without being too, you know, crazy. I'm thinking I'd go for the second option - love is the best weapon you can use against jerks like them. Srsly. They die a little inside.
So, anyway, I think I'll come to you guys on advice for how to write Mai when I start my post-finale fic. xD You seem to know proper ways to develop her character.

Really I wouldn't be so mad with the end relationship of Kataang if it was done more better. I don't mind the hero getting the girl if it was done nicely. Kind of like the other media comparisons done in this guild I want to make my own. Now be warn this does have spoilers to the movie Wall-e.
Spoilers of movie: In the movie Wall-e, there are small robots named Wall-e made to clean up earth after human kind has made a mess of things. Humans decide to live in space for the time being while the Wall-es do their job and hopefully put world back in its former glory. As the years go by, some of the people in charge believe that the world is far too damage to be saved so they turn off all the Wall-es as they see no hope of going back to earth, however they miss one. 700 years pass and the Wall-e that was forgotten is still working but has developed a personality. He has a little pet cockroach (actually its kind of cute) and has started collecting things left by the humans such as a tape of Hello Dolly (hes a pack rat). Wall-e and his cockroach are the only two living things on earth and Wall-e is aware of this. As he watches Hello Dolly, he begins to learn of love. Eventually the humans in space decide to sent these new robots down to earth name Eve to investigate. It is up to the Eves to try to find proof that humans can live on earth once again. As an Eve lands on earth, Wall-e sees her and thinks she is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen and falls in love with her. Wall-e tries to get Eve to pay attention to him but she is too busy with her job to pay him much mind. With some help from his cockroach, Eve eventually opens to Wall-e and the two start a friendship. Wall-e shows Eve the wonders of the things left by humans and a small plant he found earlier in the day. Eve's programing upon scanning the plant causes her to shut down as she has completed her directive. Wall-e is unaware of why she has shut down, gets scared but decides to watch over. However one day, he decides to go to work only for it to be cut short by the arrival of ship coming to get Eve. Wall-e is terrified at the sight of her being taken away so he goes on the ship with her. They eventually go to the mother ship holding human kind. The human has become fat and unaware of what is going on so they pretty much like babies as the robots on the ship do everything. Eve is taken to the captain where she is awaken and the truth of her mission is revealed. The plant to be put into a part of the ship where it will be made clear that earth is sustainable and send all the humans home. When the captain tries to get the plant from Eve only to find it gone, thinking that she is defective he sends her and Wall-e to be fixed and clean as Wall-e gets his hand dirty. Thanks to the dirt on the captain's hand from Wall-e, the captain starts to become smarter as he researches earth. When Wall-e and Eve are set to be taken care of, a misunderstanding occurs where some defective robots are set free and Wall-e and Eve become outlaws. Eve tries to set Wall-e back to earth for all the trouble he has caused but witness a robot from earlier in the movie with the plant. The robot sets the plant in a escape pod but unknowing to Eve and the robot, Wall-e tries to retrieve the plant. Before Eve can get Wall-e out of the pod, the robot sets it on a self destruct flight. Believing that Wall-e was killed in the blast, Eve mourns only to witness Wall-e and the plant okay after all. As she embraces Wall-e the two give the robot version of a kiss. The two decide to go back to the ship to deliver the plant while Wall-e tries to get Eve to hold his hand basically trying to get her to understand that he loves her. Eve decides to deliver the plant and keep Wall-e in a safe place. When Eve gives the plant to the captain, the auto pilot which turns out to be evil attempts to throw away the plant. The captain and Eve fight the auto pilot and the robot that attempted to kill the plant before. The two evil robots believed that earth is uninhabitable and thus want the plant destroyed so they don't go back. As the robot throws the plant in the garbage shoot only for Wall-e to catch it as he was going to find Eve. The auto-pilot attempts to take the plant but Wall-e refuses and is horribly damaged much to Eve's and the captain's dismay. Wall-e and Eve and thrown in the garbage while the captain is trapped in his quarters. Eve and Wall-e end up in a garbage room and Eve barely saves Wall-e and herself from being thrown away. Eve realizes that she cares about Wall-e more than her mission and attempts to grant his wish of holding hands. Wall-e refuses to hold her hand as she will not complete the mission and save humanity if he does so, and urges her to continue. With the help of all those that Wall-e has touched , the two make it to the room where the plant should go. During a struggle between the captain and auto pilot, the plant falls and Eve has to leave Wall-e near the machine to read the plant in order to find it. However Wall-e realizes that the auto-pilot is trying to get the machine to go back into the ground so he is forced to use what little strength he has to keep it above ground even jams his own body inside so it will not go down. The captain is able to stop the auto pilot and they put the plant in the machine that sends them to earth. Eve realizes that Wall-e is barely alive once they make it back to earth. Eve is able to fix him but he loses his memory in the process. Eve is heartbroken as she truly has fallen in love with him and gives him one last kiss and holds his hand. This is able to retrieve all of Wall-e's memories and he realizes that Eve finally feels the same way. The two along with the robots and humans make earth into a better place and live in peace. End of movie Spoilers
Wall-e and Aang: Both heroes are innocent and are interested by the world around them and have a lovable pet. Wall-e and Aang fall in love with the first girl they meet and eventually get thrown into having to save the world. Wall-e is not born to save the world but knows that he can and goes for it. Aang is destined to save the world but refuses and runs away. Both let their feelings known to the girl of their dreams. Wall-e tries to win her over while Aang expects the girl to fall in his lap. Eve actually shows interest in Wall-e before the end while Katara is shown to be in love with the last two minutes. Wall-e almost kills himself to save earth willingly while Aang needs everyone pushing him to do it. Wall-e keeps his priorities straight while Aang just wants to get whatever he wants without doing the work.
Basically Wall-e shows us a good hero and that the hero can get the girl and it can be written well. Avatar has a bratty hero and could have used more work on its writing. Thank you for all those who have read. I felt this needed to put up.

Rach, your post points out a very interesting pattern that is actually very true! I always thought that the Pakku/Kana thing in the Finale was SO predictable yet cute...But now that I think on it, you're absolutely right.
WHY did Kana leave in the first place? What made her take Pakku back however many years later? What the heck?
I'm going to agree with you 100%, the guys of Avatar always seem to get what they want when it comes to romance, and female characters who are otherwise admirably strong characters, are rather submissive even to the point of being the prize of the males.
Oh man, that sucks. asfslkjs;a...
And to AnitaSakura...
ALSO absolutely right! Wall-E was SO adorable. A "Kataang" romance done RIGHT.
And since you brought that up, I think this is a good oppurtunity for me to supply my own little Hero comparison rant that I've been meaning to get off my chest...
Here's mine:
Aang vs. NARUTO.
I know several of you are also Naruto fans, so we should all be on the same level here ^^
The first thing we know about Naruto is that he's a trouble maker, micheivious, fun-loving goofball. Aang, similarly, is a playful, fun-loving, hop-around-on-a-ball-of-air goofball. They are also both 12 years old at the beginning of their stories.
Naruto has a dream; to become Hokage, and not only lead Konoha, but protect it. Aang, while it wasn't his dream to end a war and unite the world, accepts that it's his fate...Eventually.
Naruto likes Sakura. Aang likes Katara. For the majority of their stories, the girl of their choice is either oblivious or unreturning of their feelings.
Here's where their simliarities pretty much END.
Naruto may be a goofball, but he's serious about EVERYTHING he does. He trains, he fights, he helps others, he trains, he makes blood oaths and strives to better himself with his rivalry with Sasuke, and then he trains some more. Naruto never backs down, and never gives up, even when things are at their worst. He sees things to their end and puts his heart and soul into it. He can have trouble mastering a new technique, but he will keep at it and think up ways to make it work for him. Aang may train, and he may fight, and he may make promises, but in the end, it usually takes him pushing, shoving and arm twisting for him to do anything serious. He runs away, he distracts himself, he puts it off, and tries to avoid it if at all possible. When learning something new, Aang expects to get it right away, for it to just happen since he's the Avatar.
It may just be the difference in the worlds they live in, but at age 12 Naruto seems a lot more serious and competent(once he gets past his awkward goofball stage). Aang sure acts like a child, but I think Naruto is more mature. Childlike air monk, versus a young Shinobi. Who do you think is more mature?
Naruto dreams of becoming the Hokage and works towards it every day. He has a worldly ambition that drives him to improve himself and those around him. Furthermore, he has a strong need to save Sasuke from himself and Orochimaru, and that leads to even more training and self-improvement, even asking how he "can expect to become Hokage if he can't even save his best friend." Aang would rather play with penguins. Him being the Avatar doesn't really DRIVE him. It's more like a job to him. When he does try to help improve others, it comes off as condescending(Northern Air Temple, TSR)
They both have a love interest that in some way does not return the feeling, but this is a major difference between them, and it's like BLACK AND WHITE; Naruto likes Sakura, but unlike Aang, he doesn't PINE for her every second of every episode. It is not shoved in your face that OMGNARUTOLIKESSAKURA. He does NOT let his affections for her get in the way of business, he does not let it hamper him. Fight for her, yes, save her, yes, but it doesn't consume him the way Aang lets Katara consume him. NARUTO DOESN'T LET IT RUN HIS LIFE.
What's MORE, Naruto ACCEPTS that Sakura doesn't return his feelings! In the episode that Sasuke wakes up after Itachi beats him up when Naruto first goes with Jiraiya, Sakura leaps into Sasuke's arms when he gets up. Naruto is excited that Sasuke wakes up, but then falls silent as this happens in front of him. He gets a look on his face, smiles and walks out. Here, he accepts that Sakura does not return the feeling...and possibly may not ever. HE ACCEPTS that Sakura has her OWN WILL, and that it could very well lead her to LOVE with SOMEONE ELSE, even his own friend and RIVAL, Sasuke. This scene stands out to me and is one of the things that makes Naruto such an admirable character to me. Meahwhile, in EIP, Aang shows his true, selfish, possessive and totally obsessive side when it comes to Katara. He becomes confused and angsty when Zuko sits next to Katara(stilll LOVE that part, BTW.), even more angsty and even ENTITLED when it is questioned if Katara is his girl, and completely REJECTS when it is implied that Katara could love another...especially ZUKO, his FRIEND and former RIVAL. He can't handle that she'd think any less of him than a LOVER and gets ANGRY and DESPERATE, later FORCING HIMSELF on Katara.
As for love becoming realized, Naruto still has not ended, but Later in the story, in Shippuden, it APPEARS that Sakura, in light of Sasuke being gone and the return of Naruto, is starting to look on Naruto a little differently. I haven't seen all of Shippuden, but I think it's safe to say that there could be room for development of Sakura's feelings, and at least that she is beginning to think very differently about her friend, considering him as more mature. In this case, it is developing BEFORE the end. Her thoughts on Naruto are at least lightening and we can begin to SEE the progress. This is already looking different than Kataang, where Katara's feelings were, up until the end ambiguous, confused, and NEVER explored. The moment of realization happens at a superficial time, only minutes before the very end and after Aang saves the world and is placed on his pedestal before the world. And definitely NOT after they resolve some problems, say, the confusion, the Aang pushing kisses on her...On top of that, the final affirmation, the kiss, was just so laid out and posed. It had no chemistry, and it didn't sell any of us.
I think that's pretty much it...
I'm not such a huge fan of NaruSaku myself, but if Kishimoto can pull it off better than Mike and Bryan...which judging from what he's done with Naruto's character already, I'm pretty confident of...then I am ALL OVER IT if that's what he decides.
heh heh, also sorry for the long text, and thank you for reading, lol.
