"Coffee is good, not much I can do about that but keep drinking it," he said," if I become hopelessly addicted to this stuff then I'll just have to keep on drinking it to avoid the shakes." It's not as if he was a heavy coffee drinker to begin with since he only drank it when he was out. He usually went for water or juice while he was back home sitting in his room. Coffee was like a treat he gave himself for no good reason except to keep himself from snapping angerly at people which was known to happen, on ocassion of course. There were only a few things that kept him in line and calm when he was surround by his "family" as they've been deemed. Keeping to himself in the morning, coffee, reading, relaxing in the woods, and sleeping for a good nine hours without being disturbed. If he was able to complete anyone of those then his day wouldn't be to diffcult to get through at all, possibly smiling a tad more too.

Marco took another drink from his mug then set it back down once again to speak directly with William."So what are the odds tonight?" he asked with a serious look on his face. He was talking about being attack tonight since the vampires would probably being moving around right about now. Whenever he thought about those bloodsucking creatures he always thought about Alastar, the general. Past fights against him has shown that they were on equal terms which doesn't surprise him at all. When it came down to fighting Marco wasn't a mindless beast who attack anything that moved. Fighting was something that came second nature to him so he could alway hold up his own against a vampire or in this case, Alastar. He was the one he usually fought whenever the two clans went up against each other, each fight always ending up in a draw though. Neither of them could finish each other off which just showed that they are right at the same level.

"Yeah, that's why I brought it out." Alyssa told him matter-of-factly while waving a hand dismissively. "Anyway, they have a couple other coffee makers in the kitchen for when it's really busy and such, so we're set. No worries." Her eyes roamed over the four of them and at their plates, checking to see if they enjoyed their food without actually having to ask. She wouldn't want to interrupt their meal just for a silly question that was just directed at customers to be polite.

They were all digging in, except for Tasha, who cut up the steak before she actually started eating it. It was an amusing habit of hers, mostly because few - if any - of the others would bother to do anything besides cutting it as they went. Herself included. But she'd done that as a human, too. Aly had just never had the patience for it. "Oh, Tasha, he's probably already addicted. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Not that I'm going to complain, though. The more he drinks, the more I get paid." She waggled her eyebrows conspiratorally. "And I'm all for getting paid." It meant replacement clothes and shoes, for one thing. Phasing from one form to another while still wearing some article of clothing was actually a fairly common occurrence. It was the only real reason why she had to keep a job. That and helping out with the finances for whatever the Pack needed, if it was necessary.

When William finished, she collected his plates and glanced around the table. "Anyone else done? Or want desert?"

(( Ugh. It isn't especially exciting playing this character right now. x-x ))

Malcolm nodded. "Right, I know, don't get my hopes up. But an old computer's not too much different from a newer TV. And I have faith in you. You were always good at that kind of thing." At her next comment, he laughed out loud. "Just that made you get pictures? You have a very vivid imagination, then. No details at all; I'm almost afraid to ask what you imagine me doing." For once he only nodded as she explained where he'd probably be following her, since he had nothing better to do and he had to be available to her just in case.
"He's got to be pretty close. That almost knocked me off my feet." Seeing Melanie squinting ahead, he followed her eyes to someone leaning on a cane some blocks ahead. Well, they have the cane right. I don't know if that's him," was what he said out loud. "He doesn't normally have kids following him, does he?" The thought that she might be an Apprentice only occurred to him after he'd gone and made himself look like an idiot. Still, they weren't yet sure that he was the Merlin, so no need to say anything.

Artesia had barely finished her fires before she started digging into her burger. Hers had just barely started to cook, but she could deal with the slight loss of flavor; the burger toppings made up for the browning area on the bottom. Normally she would wait to eat, making sure that everyone else had what they wanted and enjoyed it, especially if she was cooking. But this was an independent group, and she was impatient to go. She didn't take huge bites, but she chewed quickly. As she swallowed her last bite, she grabbed another napkin from the dispenser and wiped her mouth carefully. Now that she was done, she could try to salvage her ladylike decorum. She looked around, and it looked like most of them were done. Now it was just Tasha teasing Marco about his coffee. She supposed that only Tasha, at a lower rank, got away with it because they were so close in age. It was still a calm feeling night. She hoped that it would stay that way.

Alette smiled after their general, her gaze affectionate in a sisterly way while at the same time distantly pitying whoever it was that he decided to go after tonight. "I don't know if it's possible to run fast enough to escape him." When she saw him make the move to take her hand, she looked back to face her husband. Her smile widened when he kissed their intertwined fingers and declared that she was his Cinderella. Even if they were both far from the fairy tale stories Alastar had compared them to, he was her Prince Charming and more. In the story, that prince had only whisked the lucky, impoverished woman away. Rourke had done that, certainly, but he had saved Alette's life first. And that out-shined any fairy tale ending.

If she were still capable of blushing, her face would have been a faint rosy color. No matter how much time passed, she knew that she'd never care for him any less. If anything, she only grew to love him more with the passage of time. She couldn't blame the women that came before her for being with him. He was irresistible, after all.

"Now, now. That won't be necessary." One side of her mouth came up in a subtle smirk. "The shoes were what helped to bring them together in the first place. I already have you, so what more could I ask for? Besides." Her smile spread just slightly wider, evening out so it was more of a grin than a smirk. "I imagine glass shoes would be immensely difficult to walk in. I wouldn't want to break them." Alette squeezed his hand at the same time that he gave hers a gentle squeeze, and she chuckled lightly at his bow. It was extremely unfair that he could look at her they way he did. If it wasn't for the fact that they had places to be, not to mention a rather impatient General lurking nearby, she wouldn't mind so much just lingering a little longer. "Well, I can't imagine not giving them a fair warning. It just wouldn't be right."

Just then, she heard the trouble-maker in question pointedly clear his throat from out in the hall and demanded to know if they were ever coming. Immensely amused at his suddenly superior attitude, Alette laughed. "We're coming, Alastar." She glanced at the bedroom door, which was still hanging open, and then back up at Rourke. Her smile was tight-lipped only because she was trying to suppress the immensely amused grin that was threatening to take over her expression. "I think if we linger for much longer, he'll take off without us." Gently, she started tugging him along with her toward the door. For someone so small in comparison, she was nearly as strong as her husband was. At least her size gave her the advantage of speed and agility. "And we can't have that, of course."

Melanie smiled just a bit at the compliment. It was nice to know someone had faith in her abilities. "Well, hopefully I won't disappoint you or your sister, then." The smile faded at his next comment, though, and her nose wrinkled in poorly disguised distaste. "Oh, be quiet. You included enough information to make me wonder and then wish I hadn't. And anyway, I'm not going to tell you what I thought." It had been several different possibilities, actually, few of which were pleasant in any way. Generally, teenagers plus hormones plus the phrases 'wildest year' and 'did anything and everything' equaled chaos. That added to the fact that teenage boys, especially, were reckless, half the things he did were probably not quite legal. She pitied his family for having to live through the year he had discovered his powers.

"Really." She glanced sideways at him, raising an eyebrow in mock disbelief. "I was fine, more or less. But maybe that's just my affinities helping me out." She was rather talented with energy related magic, though it wasn't mastered, and she seemed to be able to withstand unrestrained magical auras better than some other Wizards. And then even they were better at it than humans. The Merlin probably wasn't just letting his aura run wild, though, and even then it was powerful. Any normal person walking through the vicinity would even be able to feel it, though they would have no idea how to explain the feeling.

"I think it's him. That aura can only belong to the Merlin. Besides, do you see any other old, cane-wielding men around?" They started getting closer, and she started to recognise the shorter person as a teenage girl. "The kid is probably the apprentice. I think I recognise her, anyway. Hard to te--..."

Melanie hadn't noticed the person running up behind them until they were hit, having been focused on the conversation and on the man she thought was the Merlin. If she had, she would have had enough sense to actually move out of the way and let the person pass without incident. As it was, though, she had been plowed right into. Cut off mid-sentence and automatically reaching for something to steady herself, she grabbed onto Malcolm's sleeve as she tumbled to the ground. Her grip wasn't too strong, though, just randomly clutching out at what she could reach. If he thought to do it in time, he'd be able to shake her off and prevent himself from falling in a heap with Melanie and the stranger who'd tackled her to the ground.

"What on earth?!" Melanie whipped her head around, searching for the culprit, when she spotted a familiar face. Though she couldn't exactly blame him, seeing as Devin was who he was, she was still annoyed at being knocked to the ground. She grumbled at the clumsy wizard. "Devin!"

(( By the way, Melanie's never asked what gender Devin is, so in her mind, she assumes her to be a 'him.' That's why I referred to the girl as a he. <3
Not like I'm wording that in a confusing way, or anything... >> ))

This is no white cross, it seems we're out of class...
Malcolm listened quietly now, grinning the whole time. Melanie was quite amusing, though he rolled his eyes a bit at her comment about the aura. He knew that she had a way with energies, she didn't have to point it out. "Yeah, the kid looks awkward enough to be--Whoa!" He saw Melanie falling and reaching for his arm. She managed to grab his jacket, and he could've helped her up, had another wizard not been seemingly trying to run right over them. So unfortunately, as much as he would have liked to help her up, her grab at his arm caused him to topple over.

Melanie echoed aloud what he was thinking as he pulled himself up and dusted off his pants. Devin? He looked around, and broke into a wide grin at seeing the tiny wizard. He amused him greatly, always running off after having seen him for a while. I wonder how long it'll take this time, he said as he extended a hand to Melanie. After all, it would be rude to leave her on the ground.

((I'm following Kitty's line of reasoning, especially since Devin's afraid of electricity, so she probably never stayed around him long enough for him to figure it out.))

Devin flailed underneath Melanie dramatically. It didn't seem as if Melanie was heavy nor that the wizard was trying to be an attention monger. It was simply in her nature to have what many people would consider exaggerated responses to things. One got used to it after a while.

"NOOOO! The... the.... felt it... bye blob." Her eyes were aimed skywards as she let out a garbled coo. Even if she was unintelligible in word choice and syntax, her tone and delivery denoted sore disappointment as she watched something invisible escape. For a moment it seemed as if she might cry. It was up to debate as to whether she was actually chasing something real as opposed to fictional.

The sorrow abruptly ceased as she realized that her hand was still clutching something. Her gaze shifted up to Melanie and Malcom as if she had just now noticed them. Blinking a few times, her vacant look was a clear indication she had forgotten, for the moment, the male wizard's elemental choice. The blank stare moved back and forth between the crumpled sheet in her grip and her two peers, as if she were expecting them to know what she was grasping.

"What are we doing?"

Clearly the woman had issues.

(( I prefer everyone but the Merlin think she's a guy. Oh, and any werewolves that run into her! I imagine girls and boys smell different to them. <3 ))

Philipe resisted the urge to jump up and down and clap his hand excitedly. That would not help very much with his disguise. Instead, he allowed a nod and a glowing smile. "You see? That was wonderful, little Cailee. Do not expect to perform flawlessly quite yet; I do promise, however, that your control over Air will grow if you practice that small exercise several times every day, doing it just the way I told you." A mischievous smile took the place of his congratulatory one, looking quite odd on the old man. Still, his eyes glinted with a light more his own age as he spoke. "Just be sure to practice away from the other humans, okay? I know you may not understand just yet, but you will in time. And please, if not for yourself, then stay away from the Vampires, Werewolves, and Hunters alike for me and those who care about you. You know very well that most only want to Turn you, or kill you." This topic was not meant to be stated gently. He could see how the girl could be curious and think talking to a Vampire was harmless, but the reality was far too severe to be unprepared for. "Just be careful and use the common sense I know you have, alright?" Reaching out, he prodded the vial with a bony finger. "And you keep that. Call it a reminder." Philipe gave her a sly wink before the commotion only a few meters away caught his eye. "Oh dear . . . ."

"Well, let us go meet your new teacher, little Cailee," he rasped, trying to make his voice sound a bit more withered than it had. He was, after all, supposed to act his age to match his face. Taking a hobbling step, cane in front, he led her over to the partial pile-up on the sidewalk a bit away, where Melanie, Malcolm, and Devin all stood or sat. Melanie looked a bit flustered, if not irritated. Malcolm seemed similar, although as if caught completely by surprise and not knowing what to do with himself nor the other two women. Yes, Devin, a woman, not a man. Even his own eyes would have been fooled had he not already known. And she, of course, looked pleasantly preoccupied and innocent. He smiled, taking the last step with a tap of his cane to announce himself and Cailee.

"Good afternoon to you all. Malcolm, Melanie, and darling Devin." Leaning heavily on his cane, Philipe sighed in a convincingly tired manner, adjusting his glasses with a free, wavering hand. "Allow me to introduce to you all Miss Cailee Zinc, an Apprentice who is currently in need of a temporary guardian." He examined the group, some still on the ground, as he tried to hide a smile, and did so successfully. "Melanie, would you be so kind as to take this little one under your wing for the time being? I'm afraid her Master is away, and she is oh-so eager to continue on with her training. I am quite sure that you will find her to be a most capable student." With another eye twinkle, he looked to the rest, the tacit question simply asking, 'Any questions?'

Melanie took Malcolm's offered hand and let him help her up. Once she was back on her feet, just in time for the Merlin and the apprentice to walk up, she started dusting herself off. As she did, her eyes were trained on the confused Wizard that still lay sprawled on the ground. He had cried out at the loss of something and then started mumbling incoherently while they were all still in a confused pile. The boy had looked like he was even going to start crying, for whatever reason. Then, as though it hadn't been obvious, Devin asked what the three of them were doing. "Uh, Devin, you ran into us and knocked us both over." She extended a hand to help the boy up. "You weren't paying attention, again." The words were only gently scolding. It was difficult to stay properly annoyed at Devin, who seemed too clueless for his own good.

Melanie turned, then, to face the Merlin and the young apprentice. "Good evening, sir. Hello, Cailee." She nodded at each respectively, then returned her attention to the Merlin as he explained her new job. Her eyebrows rose minutely, but she otherwise kept a straight face. She was to continue the girl's lessons? She didn't think that she would have a problem doing it, of course. She knew enough to be able to teach someone effectively, so it shouldn't be too difficult a task. Besides, if she agreed to his request - though it was probably more a polite order than anything else - she wouldn't be stuck with patrol duty anymore. At least not until the girl's Master returned from his mission.

"Of course, Merlin. I'd be happy to help." Melanie smiled politely at them both as she straightened her jacket. It had gotten bunched up and crooked when she fell. Her gaze eventually lingered on the girl, and she mentally appraised her. Air magic was her affinity, if she remembered correctly. Fairly easy to teach, at least. Air was, more or less, a rather simple element when only performing the basic spells. She could handle that. "When do you need me to start?"

Malcolm raised an eyebrow at the boy. Did he just say "Bye blob?" he thought as Melanie took his hand and he gently pulled her up. Well, he is one weird kid. Malcolm in truth didn't know how old Devin was, but didn't need to know so he never asked. But Devin certainly looked like a kid. When he asked what they were doing, Malcolm answered after Melanie, "We were just out on patrol. Looks like you have an errand." He had stooped down to the other wizard's level and was about to try to see if he could help get him back on track when he heard the familiar tap of a cane and turned to face the Merlin.

"Good evening sir. And hello, Miss Cailee." A gracious smile and nod of the head accompanied his greeting. Because it had nothing to do with him, he just listened as the Merlin informed Melanie of her newest job. He was a bit bummed that it looked like he would be partnered with someone else for patrol duty, but in the end, it was probably better. Definitely for the vamps and lycans; even he was unnerved by her zeal to control them.

Devin took Melanie's hand, pulling herself to her feet and staring at both Merlin and Cailee. Well, no, that was wildly inaccurate; the Merlin was given a glance and then her mindless gaze was shifted to Cailee. Her eyes seemed wildly unfocused as they stared past the physical shell that others would be preoccupied with, trying to find and analyze her magical aura. Devin didn't care about other things. Other things were boring. Mystical energies were interesting.

Blinking her blatant stare away from the apprentice, she tilted her head at the Merlin. For a moment it might appear a particularly insightful sentence might issue forth. After all, Melanie and Malcom had tried to address what she should be doing, they had addressed the Merlin and Cailee politely, and she had just spent several long moments appreciating the latter's potential- there were several things she could talk about intelligently.

"Grandpa!" Strike-out. It was absolutely certain that the Merlin was of no relation. In fact, her paternal grandfather lived in England with her paternal grandmother and her maternal grandparents were both deceased and of the wrong ethnicity. Devin was simply having another mind-boggling lapse. In her defense, he did look grandfatherly and once one took into account her nature, it wasn't too surprising.

Most likely to the sheer horror of Melanie and Malcom, Devin almost literally pounced on her superior, hugging him fiercely. She was completely oblivious to the fact that she was doing anything wrong, her face reflecting affection she would have for a relative.

"Grandpa, you smell like chocolate."

Cailee shoved the vial of blue sand into a pocket of her dress as she saw the three figures coming her way. Widening her eyes, she watched as they all collided into each other making a pile of three into the street. She held back the fit of giggles that was threatening to spill from her throat. Seeing this clumsy bunch, she started to wonder if her jealousy towards their magic skills was wrongly accused. Especially when she heard the words coming out of the boy's mouth that had caused the collision. Cailee wondered if Devin was right in the head; he did say something about a blob in the sky, after all.

Her purple eyes scanned the other two wizards, obviously knowing that the girl was Melanie. She had seen her before, but only once in a while. As for the other boy, he looked familiar, but she couldn't put a name on him. She doubted that any of them have actually met formally, so she pleasantly greeted them after they had greeted her, "Hello Melanie, Malcom." Her eyes seemed to be glued to Melanie, her new.. tutor. Her thoughts were mixed, fighting between two ideas. How would she act? Would she be sweet and innocent, matching her exterior appearance? Or should she fake it and cause as much trouble as she could? This, of course, would take place after the Merlin had said his goodbyes.

Cailee's mischievous thoughts were abruptly cut short as Devin came into a running jump, pouncing on the Merlin, calling him his Grandpa. Again, Cailee wondered if there was something wrong mentally with this guy. Was he being serious? Did Merlin really have a grandson, or was this just a overly confused guy, who seemed like an overgrown kid who's mind hadn't developed exactly as fast as his body...?
PostPosted: Fri Aug 15, 2008 6:08 am

"Right this moment, actually," came Philipe's response jovially, tapping his cane again. "Miss Cailee is just so eager to learn, I thought that we would waste no time. I dare say she might be a little prodigy." He gave an over-exaggerated wink in the girl's direction before centering his attention on Devin. Yes, Devin; the female intentionally or unintentionally masquerading as a man. A slightly topsy and dazed man, at that. The Merlin kept up his grandfatherly smile the whole way through, even up until Devin pounced upon him and clung like a grandchild would. Surprisingly, he took not a step backward, and made no move to do so. The smile stayed, even if it had changed a bit to an amused one. This girl was rather confused, but he knew she had a unique spark in her. Besides, she made him feel less like the Merlin and more like just a normal man, which he was always silently grateful for. The job did get tiring, after all, not that he was going to let anybody know it.

Leaning his cane against his thigh, he lifted a bony hand to gently pat Devin's head. "Hello there, my favorite Grandson." His eyes twinkled with a hidden playful glee. "How have you been? Making your Grandpa proud, right?" Philipe played along, enjoying the small amount of fun he could have. "And yes, I'm sure I do smell like chocolate. The diner around the corner had a nice bit of cake, although a bit too pricey for me." A wrinkled face broke into a more youthful grin, a sliver of shiny white teeth showing beneath thin lips. "Would you like some chocolate as well? I know you know I always carry a bit around." As if to prove it, he withdrew a Hershey's bar from a coat pocket, opening it deftly with the experience of a learned chocolate fanatic. Breaking off a piece, he handed it down to Devin, holding it out to the rest of the group with a weedy laugh. "Would anybody else like some? Don't be shy, now. Devin and I can't eat it all on our own, or we may get fat." He suppressed a giggle. He was having too much fun today, especially today and for what was to come that evening.

Malcolm was one of the few that wasn't as shy and reserved around the Merlin as you'd expect. The initial and final "sir" were the only ones he used. Between that, the Merlin was just another old guy, and at the moment, an old guy with something he wanted. He knew that you had to be somewhat respectful, but if the Merlin was always laughing and joking, why couldn't he? Malcolm no longer remembers the answer, only getting whacked upside the head by his master. "Thanks." He took it upon himself to break off his own piece, which was probably too big, but hey, who doesn't like chocolate?
As he gobbled down the sweet snack, he asked, "So what brings you out and about now?" Not that he had to have a reason, but he doesn't remember the Merlin having a penchant for wandering around for no apparent reason.
