I can't quite remember all the facts, but for some reson, Most times death, Xellos ends up with complete amnisa(sp?) and his ties to Zelas cut. Because of this lack of ownership all three Mazoku lords are scrambling to find him and bind him to them. Xellos figers this out and to hide himself he takes most of his energy and forms a physical body with it heart beat and all, leaving only the amount of energy a strong human would have on the astral plaine....
