“Nice? Well, yeah, I reckon. He plays Quidditch, the Seeker for Puddlemere United. He goes by H. James Keyes, though, and he’s grown his hair out so you can’t see The Scar.” Danny emphasized the title by making quotation marks in the air with his fingers, his eyes rounding in feigned urgency. “Kinda weird, he’s got this phobia about the whole Boy Who Lived thing - he lost the will to be a hero, I think, when Sirius disappeared and he thought Severus was a through-and-through Death Eater. I’ve read loads on the Horcrux hunting stuff and he says it’s all about the same, but it’s like, he doesn’t want to be associated with it. He’d rather talk about Dad and Father.”

Danny tucked his palms around his feet, rocking a little as he discussed his Mum. It was a bit odd to discuss his parents by their first names, but he was almost used to thinking of them as historical figures, having extensively researched all of them - and the Traveler variations that had been documented. Unlike Godfrey, he’d hounded his parents unendingly about their lives before and just after traveling.

He grinned at the mention of getting along. “Oh, yeah, Father’s loads different than Headmaster Snape - he wears jeans and his hair is short. He’s always laughing. Dad’s a little high-strung, but it’s cos he hasn’t found a job he likes to occupy his time.” The corner of his mouth dimpled when Godfrey addressed the fudge and his own parent’s lack of hand in it. “S’the only thing Mum can make without setting the house on fire.”

"Short hair? Jeans? LAUGHING? You have GOT to show me a picture of them!" Godfrey leaned forward, an evil grin spreading across his face. Sure, they weren't the same person, but still. "Do you ever imagine the Headmaster dressed up in a flowered shirt sipping a drink from a coconut while laid out on a beach or anything? I can say it but I can't picture it at all. If you show me a picture we can have dumb grins on our faces all class, or at least I know I will!"

Headmaster Snape, teaching potions in flip flops and swim trunks? Godfrey simply couldn't imagine it without the long, greased hair, scowl, and pale skin!

"Geeze, must be weird having him for a teacher though. But... well if they are that different..." Godfrey put his finger to his lips, trying to imagine...... an alternate Gilderoy or even Xeno, but the image that came to mind instead was a long haired, normally dressed Harry Potter, gently talking to him and patting his shoulder as he coaxed Godfrey like one would a frightened pony into lifting a few inches off of the ground on a broomstick. Godfrey shook the image away and it felt like his heart skipped a beat. "Must not remind you of your father at all."

"Your family sounds really nice. " Godfrey continued, squeezing his own toes to stem back a swell of emotion, a memory. "Wish mine was like that. It's okay sometimes though. At least I have my Papa back. Met a boy named Kholby too, he lives in the childrens perm ward."

Danny considered the request for a picture - did he have any with Father laughing mid-click? He’d never seen a picture in which Severus later laughed at something happening in the frame (as Harry did in their family portrait, due to Gerald making faces at Kristen.) He knew there were probably pictures in their substantial photo albums at home. He’d have to hunt one down.

“I can picture it,” he said with a grin, a clear image of Headmaster Snape lounging in casual garb on the sun-light sands of a beach. Then again, he’d hunted down dozens of pictures of Traveler Severus Snapes. “And he reminds me of Father all the time. They’ve got the EXACT same glare. And my sister Kristen’s slipped up and called him ‘Daddy’ before, it was hilarious.”

The Hufflepuff sobered at Godfrey’s honest confession of wishing his family held the same paternal unity as Danny’s. “Well, I mean, I bet your family’s great. It must be weird with Lockhart back now…” he trailed off, indirectly urging Frey to elaborate further.

"It is great, when everyone is getting along. But that doesn't happen very much." Godfrey said, sullen now. He looked down at his foot, playing with his sock. "It's hard to explain........ "

And he really didn't think he wanted to. His ears laid limply against his hair and he looked down and over, off into space with a frown tugging down the corners of his mouth. He didn't want to confess how awful he knew he was or talk about the bad things that had happened or about how he hated/didn't hate/ was angry at Harry and was starting to feel the same about Gilderoy too.

"I'm tired." He said, hunching his shoulders at his cowardice. But why should he have to tell Danny just because they sort of had the same parent, and because Danny asked him out? He didn't trust Danny or much of anyone enough to tell them about his family dynamics because it would lead to talking about his hate and the things he had done to Harry and the things Harry had done to them. Things his Papa probably didn't even know about. Then again, Harry didn't know about even half of the times he had 'run away.' He didn't know Danny well enough yet and he was feeling uncomfortable.

"Sorry, I shouldn't have even said anything." Godfrey said putting his hand on the covers and turning partially away, intending on breaking the curtain barrier and go to sleep.

Panic and regret tumbled across Danny’s face as Godfrey moved to escape, the conversation taking a sharp dip as something dark and miserable claimed the other boy’s eyes. “Godfrey, wait, hang on a second,” Danny said desperately, scrambling across the dragged-up sheets - folded and tangled with their mutual wrestling about - to slide his fingers loosely across Godfrey’s wrist. Not holding, pausing. “I’m sorry I said that. Your family might not be great. I don’t know. But you don’t have to talk about it. I - I’m curious, yeah, but it’s none of my business.”

A blush peppered a pink tinge across the boy’s pale cheeks as he rushed on. “I’m just interested in you. So I was asking. And I’m going to be a Traveler case worker when I graduate, so I just get intrigued by that kind of dynamic. I shouldn’t have been pushy.”

He wasn’t even sure if he’d been pushy, really, but he didn’t want Godfrey to leave on a bad note, and he didn’t want him to think he was a jerk.

“I just… want you to sleep okay.”

Godfrey paused, toes brushing the curtain. He hadn't meant to make Danny think he'd done something really wrong. But he could barely think the words to himself, let alone say them outloud. Even as he tried to think it now it trickled away like water down a pane of glass. Or perhaps it was just Godfrey who cringed away from it.

It was hard to admit that, as wrong as Harry had been, giving into Gilderoy for years and expecting him to let him make his own life later, as a quidditch player, it was even more wrong for Gilderoy to try and control him in the first place. To keep trying to, and in doing so using the children as he needed. Harry may have been the one who needed help in the past but he had gotten it, and it was the way Papa had treated his Dad that made Godfrey hate Harry, that made Godfrey never want to be like him, meek and controlled. Papa was his hero, his idol, he was always right and never faulty. But it wasn't true and his mind ran from it because it broke everything he knew. Papa was the one who needed help now to get better, and Harry was the strong one.

"Maybe... maybe some other time." Godfrey mumbled. "I'll.... maybe I can..."

He shook his head, pushing the thoughts away. This was all Harry's fault! His fault for being such a pushover, his fault for loving wallowing in his misery and memories more than his own children.

Godfrey's head twinged at the lie and he squeezed his eyes shut, shaking his head. His feet withdrew sharply from the curtain and he turned to face Danny, making a split second decision.

He needed to think about something else, and that was why he pushed himself up onto his knees, why he approached the other boy and raised his arms, wrapping them firmly around his shoulders. Why Godfrey pressed their upper bodies together an nuzzled Danny's neck with his nose before pressing his face into the crook of it. Danny smelled really nice. Clean like soap but with that musky boy-smell Godfrey liked. His body felt big and warm and nice. Not as bony or lanky as Josh. But not as cool and solid and present as hugging Voldemort.

"Can I sleep with you?" He really hated sleeping alone. There was always too much bed and no one to share dreams with. For most people this would be a weird question to ask. He couldn't talk about his thoughts on his family to someone he didn't know well, but he could fall asleep in the same bed with him?

But that's just how Godfrey was. He knew it was going to sound strange to Danny and he would probably be too flustered and say no, but he needed to ask anyways.

“Yeah, sure,” Danny answered immediately, his green-grey eyes wide and earnest. Whenever Gerald spent the night at home instead of his own flat, they shared Danny’s bed because Gerald’s bedroom - upstairs beside the master bedroom - had been converted into an office for Father. But they also shared a bed because Danny was what his Mum called a “cuddle bunny,” boyishly delighted by physical closeness.

Godfrey’s hair was a cascade of softness beneath his chin, Danny tilting his head so his cheek smoothed over the fuzzed point of his flattened ear. Having the gorgeous male tucked in his arms - which had come up to draw Godfrey flush against him - made him blush and his skin run hot in all kinds of awkward places, but he pushed guy thoughts away and considered the boy’s bed arrangement request again.

Godfrey had been sleeping in the same bed all that time with Josh, he probably missed it. As a matter of fact the transition - sharing blankets, sharing warmth, and one day just going back to cold solitude - was probably depressing as hell. The thought made Danny’s eyebrows furrow. He was trying not to judge Josh but the bullet points for “DOUCHEBAG” were piling up quickly.

“I usually take a shower before I go to bed, though,” Danny admitted, too lazy to get clean when he rolled out of bed in the morning. “So I could take a quick one… I sleep in pajamas so you don’t have to worry about my butt ending up in your face.”

Danny's arms around him felt so nice, as well as the cheek against his ear. Danny answering in the positive so quicky surprised him, but pleasantly.

Godfrey shivered slightly. Despite his earlier thoughts to want to take it slow, he couldn't help the thought of joining Danny in the shower. The tips of his ears burned as if on fire and he raised himself up slightly to better nuzzle at Danny's neck.

He really did smell so nice, and the hairs on Godfrey's arms and the back of his neck stood up while his toes, tucked behind him under his tail, curled slightly.

But he swallowed and calmed himself down, pulling back a bit and nodding. He hated going to sleep with wet hair, after all.

"Okay. I sleep in pyjamas too. I'll go change and.." Godfrey cleared his throat, and pulled back more, untangling his arms from around Danny's shoulders to look him in the eyes. "Wait for you."

A small grin spread across his face. Really, he couldn't resist.

The boy was gentle as he moved from his embrace with Godfrey to stand, blood tingling in his legs as he paused to let the sleeping limbs regain some sense of feeling. The movie hadn’t felt long, but upon opening the curtains he’d found most of their roommates had already gone to bed, their curtains closed and the room silent and dark beyond low snoring and the glow of a classmate’s alarm clock, pale green and reading 9:46. Danny’s first class was at 6:30 so it wasn’t too early to shower and go to bed.

When Godfrey purred that he’d wait for the other boy, red erupted across the Hufflepuff’s face, spreading in splotches on his neck and ears. Guy thoughts - he called them so, having gotten the term from Gerald - filtered right from his brain to his -

“I’ll only be a couple minutes!” Danny blurted inelegantly, visibly flustered. Floundering, he planted his mouth against Godfrey’s forehead, an awkward, boyish touch that felt like it should be given to a little sister off to school or a nagging Mum asking too many questions too early in the morning.

He fled to the bathroom with a weird, flailed wave.

Godfrey's lips quirked upward a bit further, and he kept his eyes on Danny until he was gone from sight.

And then the frown flickered back, but Godfrey yawned it away and rubbed at his eyes before sliding quietly from the bed and over to his own. His pyjamas for the night were tucked neatly in the top drawer of his small dresser and he sat on his bed with them, quietly and leisurely pulling them on. They were kind of silly but he loved the shape of them and they didn't often come without babyish pictures spread across them. Godfrey tossed his folded shirt, pants, and socks on the dresser, knowing the houseeleves would take them to be cleaned before the morning. He pulled on his pyjamas, pants first, the stretchy ankle cuffs clinging midway up his calf instead of around his ankle. The stop half was the same, the stretchy three inch long cuffs stopping halfway up his forearm rather than down by his wrist. They looked one or two sizes small but really weren't. Godfrey grabbed a pillow from his bed and climbed back up into Danny's, pulling the covers halfway down across the entire bed and laying on the duvet. He played with the baby blue fabric while he waited, propped up by his pillow, tracing the cartoonish baby gryphons from their pointy orange beaks down to their fluffy yellow tails. He went over the earlier conversation in his head again and frowned slightly once more.

He supposed he really did want someone to talk to. And Danny certainly didn't seem to mind. Maybe in a few days, a week. Godfrey yawned again, tilting his head back against the top of the pillow. Maybe things would just finally work themselves out first. Godfrey touched two fingers to his forehead where Danny had given him that awkward kiss. He would definitely have to teach Danny something better when they went on their icecream date.

The rush of water was ice cold and drummed against his skin with a staggering force that left him hoarse and panting, flesh blushed blood-red, when he emerged from the bathroom. It had been a cliché choice to take a frigid shower, but he’d wanted to clear his head, and his other option had seemed rude. So he cringed as he pulled on feather-soft yellow flannel, the baggy plaid bottoms and oversized matching top - which he left partially unbuttoned because his chest still stung from the water - decorated in little emo boys and girls snuggling with black-stitched hearts. Black socks covered the white-numbness of his toes.

He didn’t know Godfrey’s story. He didn’t know if his parents were abusive or they said nasty things or were never home; he’d been a freaking moron to cop the “oh, I’m sure they’re great!” bullshit kids often did when assuring their classmates that their parents weren’t lame. He didn’t have the right to make assumptions - positive or negative - and wouldn’t do so in the future if he could help it.

Damn it.

He’d really messed up.

He lingered in the bathroom, not very worried about his pacing because he hadn’t been in the shower more than six minutes and had dressed in two; his hair was still wet and dripping on his shoulders. So he dug around in his bathroom duffel bag - filled with all the necessities so he didn’t have to go back and forth to the dorm - until he located his iPod.

As the headphones were tucked into his ears, Iris’s moody, melodic voice flooded his head and calmed him in a rush of half-crooned lyrics from “Just Tonight.” He let the song spread to his toes, filling him up and spreading along his flushed skin like warm water to soothe away the cold. It wasn’t the words - it was her voice, earnest and low.

He removed the headphones and stuffed them in his bag, feeling calmer. That was why Cracked Iris was his favorite band. It didn’t matter what his mood was - Iris’s voice fell like cleansing rain and washed away the ill feelings, even with the sadness of her lyrics. He was grinning, clean and mostly dry, when he came back into the dorm.

"Nice pj's!" Godfrey couldn't help a grin and a laugh. It wasn't a mean laugh, but an amused one. "I really like the yellow."

Danny looked odd in yellow with black hair and nails, but the figures patterned on them matched. He thought Danny was cuter without the eye makeup but didn't tell him.

“Yours are adorable,” Danny said with a grin similar to Godfrey’s. He was feeling warm and clean and eager to burrow under the blankets and talk. He kicked his duffel bag beneath the bed and crawled up - partially over Godfrey - onto the mattress, throwing himself on the pillows and dragging one like an overstuffed cuddly toy to his face, groaning in appreciation. “Guhhhh. I love Hogwarts pillows.”
PostPosted: Mon Feb 07, 2011 3:32 pm

"The house elves are great. The pillows are always soft and fluffy." Godfry agrreed, watching him. Godfrey preffered human pillows above all else, however.

He reached down after staring at Danny a few moments more and.pulled the covers over them both, snuggling down into his pillow until only his eyes and ears showed. Blankets were like a fluffy cave to hide in, or he was just a caterpillar in a coccoon. He tucked his side of the blankets under his feet and beneath his exposed side. The tight pyjamas helped keep the monsters in his dreams away, but just in case they did come, he would be able to feel their skeletal hands touching him in an instant.

He pretended he wasn't still afraid, but a bedmate made it even safer.
