VerandiDarkstar Vadadaca Ok...I'm off-topic, but I wanted to say that I saw Patrick Wilson in concert last night! He's marvelous. The audience was screaming their heads off when he started doing Phantom songs. Then I found out that my band teacher was playing drumset in the concert and I might get to have voice lessons from Wilson's mother. Yay! Woot! Awesome! Sounds like fun! That's SO cool!!! whee *ish excited for joo*

Since I have not had the delight of seeing the play yet, I think that the movie is absolutely amazeing. I know that many people think that it can never compete with the play, but I have heard CDs from the play, and honestly, I believe that the movie is as good as an adaptation of anything can ever get. And for anyone who says that Gerard couldn't sing, I just think he couldn't sing AS well as the previous phantoms. He's still amazeing, just slightlty not as good. Besides, he sang like that only after a small few of singing lessons (he said this himself in an interview), so I think he really does have a good voice.

Kitsune Ookami and poor Gerry's mask kept on slipping off (it was held on with sticky tape) xd Me and my friend were wondering that the other day! We had a (strange) theory of velcro, lol!
I can just imagine them during filming:
Gerry: Let the dream begin, let your -- *mask falls off his face* ... O_o... *strange silence* ... Hang on, the dream can begin when I get my mask back on sweatdrop

Omg.
Phantom isn't supposed to be released till the 21st, but one of our theaters here (because they are fools who are run by fools) is showing it early. If Warner Brothers finds out, I bet they are gonna be pissed (it'll be great!). So as a result; I get to see it a week earlier then I should! YES! *Ish so excited* xd I've got half my soccer team into going to see it with me tonight and my fellow phantom phan friends are going too. This is going to be so fun! heart
I'll come back and post my thoughts and what-not afterwords.

I went to see it again yesterday! Did anyone els enotice that when Christine removes the cloth on the mirror in Down Once More, the rock formation it reflects looks like a face? I love stuff like that.

Haha hahaha haha! I live in a select city! *dances*
Erm.
Anyway, I thought that to a non-phan's POV - that is, as a stand-alone movie, it was excellent. The acting was good, the music was superb, etc., etc.
However, as a phangirl who read the book more than two years ago, and fell in love with the OLC soundtrack a year and a half ago...it really wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be.
First off, before you start to gape at me and demand that I get my brain checked, I must remark that I was - and still am, in a way - an ardent supporter of The Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign (TMCPMC). Therefore, I plead insanity. Anyway, Gerard Butler's voice was decent, I suppose, but not good enough for me. Emmy Rossum had a good voice, but she had the irritating tendency to look stoned when she sang. And Patrick Wilson, while annoyingly cute, was too foppy a Raoul for my tastes.
And then there's the question of the niggling little canon-thumper in the back of my mind going "WTF?! Why does Erik have a tan?" So I asked my friend this, and she suggested that maybe he sunbathes on the roof of the Opera during the summer. Which brought about a round of drooling that probably drowned/scared everyone in the theatre.
And then there was me ranting about Erik's deformity. Don't get me wrong, I like my Phantom as sexy as everyone else, but once you downplay his deformity so much that it's more of a case of bad sunburn, Christine's huge crisis of "OMG this guy's brilliant but he's also insane and terrifically deformed" really isn't much of a crisis anymore because he's actually good-looking. So yes, I'm sort of complaining that Erik wasn't ugly enough. xp
And don't get me started on the complete and total lack of maniacal laughter.
Oh, and to the guys that were wondering about the horse in the title song - I believe it was indeed meant to be a tribute to Cesar, the horse in Leroux's novel. Unfortunately, Leroux specifically stated that Cesar was a white horse. So... razz
Don't get me wrong. The movie was highly enjoyable. Minnie Driver made for an excellent Carlotta, and the managers were awfully good. My friend and I sang along with everything loudly and nearly got kicked out of the theatre for it. I was frowned at by several people when Meg discovered the mirror in Christine's dressing room was open and I said (loud enough for the entire theater to hear) "Some tormented genius you are, Erik."
But still. It could have been better.

I think Erik looks tan because of his skin tone. My mom and sister have darker skin than I do and always look tan, even if they don't go out in the sun a lot. So, I don't mind that he has some color.

I'm actually a brand new phan girl, who lacks a lot of previous knowledge...but I did catch a lot of that. 3nodding I feel proud of myself. xd
A friend of mine (who's lurking around in this guild somewhere <.<) is going to lend me her POTO novel, which is apparently one of the better translations. I want to read it so bad I'm dying. gonk
Gah... what's worse is I keep picturing the tan, attractive Erik crying in my head, staring at his little monkey. Gaspies, I want to hug him! The poor, deranged creature... crying

When he was "little Erik", I wanted to break him out of there and take him home. ~.~;;;;;;; Ah well. You can tell it is a good movie/story because of how personal it feels.
