Senritsu continued to go through what Orika had in the box, looking at what was in her hand, as well as whatever it was Senritsu pulled out of the box herself. At least one of the items could be identified if she continued on like this. It wouldn’t take as long to find food to eat for the two of them if they went on like that for a little while. The Uchiha began to smile as she helped her new friend with what she asked. She enjoyed helping people, it was something she enjoyed greatly, whether it be a complete stranger, or one of her friends, either way it made her feel a bit happier than before. Looking at a bag that was filled with a strange grayish brown powder, Senritsu smiled as she knew what it was. “This is gravy mix I believe.” She re-closed the bag and set it down on the bed, away from the things that they were unaware of. At least this way they wouldn’t get things mixed up and Senritsu ending up having to figure out what something was for the second time. Having to do that would just end up getting on the young girl‘s nerves more than anything else. Not that it would happen quickly, but after having to do it for a bit it would definitely start to take it‘s toll. Senritsu smiled as Orika handed her an extremely odd item. “I…” Senritsu began. She didn’t have any idea what this strange item was. “Er…let‘s just call it a sort of cheese…” Senritsu knew she didn‘t sound too convincing, but there was only one way to figure out what it really was, and that was to have Orika run and go dip it in water.

"Well, I don't want to throw anything away, but now I really want to know what that is!" Orika squealed and grabbed the cheese and gravy. Gravy went well with everything and if she didn't have potatoes, she could just pour it in a broth to make it thicker and ten times more yummy! She poked the fire and watched the logs roll to situate themselves in a position where the fire would burn with more oxygen. She put the gravy aside and added water dribble by dribble to the cheese until it looked edible. A nibble of the cheese sent Orika running out the door to present the wet, dripping blob of orange-yellow goo to Senritsu on a silver platter. "Senri! You've got to try this stuff. It's so amazingly creamy and delicious and it just melts in your mouth so I should use it to thicken soup or as a dressing because as an appetizer, it doesn't really cut the cake but man, this cheese really cuts the cheese! Yuck! But it's like magic!" ranted Orika, shifting her weight from heel to toe, not bothering to contain the energy inside her. It was the strength that came when one was relieved of a dilemma concerning the path one would take on the road to the rest of one's life. Or maybe she just really liked the cheese. Orika couldn't tell as her mind worked furiously. She could combine the gravy and melt the cheese together with a dash of the brine and pieces from the pickled cabbage. Adding vinegar to a rich soup dish brought out a subtle flavor that made the dish unique, yet still recognized as that dish. In her excitement, Orika kicked over a box and out spilled two packages of something covered in white powder. "Huh? This looks interesting."

Senritsu smiled as Orika seemed to be getting excited about the cheese she’d found. It seemed to be merely fermenting in the bag it was in so it should be extremely delicious. “No thank you, I’ll wait until everything is finished before tasting anything.“ She grabbed the bag that had fallen to the floor and opened it. This one didn’t contain any fruit. It had a strange odder, something that seemed extremely familiar. It was a slow thought process but it was coming to her in bits. It was something she’d smelled that day. What food had she passed by that day that would make this strange smell? AH! Beef stew! She had it earlier in the day, how could she not have figured that out beforehand? It smelled as though it had the gravy, some potatoes, carrots, and what seemed like peas and beef parts. “It’s a pretty good beef stew…it has some good pieces. All it needs is to be heated up. It even has pre-cooked beef pieces.”

"Your choice," Orika shrugged, "When I was little, I used to love to taste the difference between the ingredients and the final product. To get me mad, my mom started using more and more ingredients, but that only made the game more fun. Hee!" She took the beef stew, wanting the thing to be good because Senri said so, but Orika was wary of precooked meals. You could add a bit of yourself into it. Even the chefs that served noodles on the street knew just how to personalize their food for every customer. Her orders always came with all the ingredients and plenty of sauces on the side, including the special hot sauce that even the cook was afraid to try. But she loved it all! Ah, the world of food! "I'll cook it up and we'll see just how good it is," she said with a small indignant huff. Precooked meals took all the fun out of cooking. "I bet there's more ingredients around here. Let's try for something interesting!" Orika ruffled around and handed an assortment of bags to Senri that included something shredded and purple, grey chips, a mixture of red and black... things that jiggled when she shook the bag. "Have fun!" Orika called as she rushed off to cook the beef stew and start mixing ingredients. On the outside she may appeared frantic, but the girl was just really excited at this activity.

By then, the fire was more than ready. Orika opened the stove door to check and then shut it as soon as a bloody hot blast came through and possibly singed some of her finer hairs off. "Ooh, that's more than ready," she muttered, estimating how much water she needed. Orika brought the water to a boil and dumped in the beef stew. She dipped in a long handled spoon into the pot to sample the soup and found that although it was quite edible and rich, the soup was really boring. She found a knife and grated the cheese into the stew, saving enough to add to another dish if she so pleased. Next, she added the gravy to make the stew more rich and just a touch of vinegar from the cabbage. A second tasting showed a need for more cheese. A third proved to be the charm.

Senritsu pulled out a bag and opened it to spy an odd colored tubular item. She pulled it out, pulling a bit from the tip to place on her tongue. Immediately the taste was recognizable. “Bananas,” Senritsu said gently as she placed the item back in the bag and moved it into her little pile of food. It wouldn’t need any re-hydration due to the fact it was freeze-dried fruit. What else could she just pull out of this magical bag of wonders? Who knows, so far she’s pulled out fruit and cabbage. She wouldn’t be too surprised if she pulled out some sort of dried animal in the bag sooner or later. Senritsu heard a bit of annoyance in Orika‘s voice as she took the bag to see how good it tasted. Senritsu was only referring to the sort of ingredients already inside it. Senritsu didn‘t bother to say anything to the girl as she opened the bag of shredded purple strings. “It looks like union strips…” She set it down, picking up the next bag and staring at it. Grey chips? Perhaps they were thinly sliced potatoes. That sounded a bit strange, but she‘d tried something like that before, they were flavored with some sort of sauce that made them amazing. As for the last bag she had been handed, she stared at the mixture of black and red things. Was it shredded pepper? ”Hey, Miss Orika, I think we have some potato chips and…what looks like shredded pepper.”

The ingredients seem to come from all parts of the world. All they needed was whale blubber and their multicultural display would be complete! She giggled at the thought and gave a mock salute to Senri. It would be tricky to blend all these items together, but she could always make a full meal, rather than just a dish. With the packages in her hand, the girl danced into the kitchen, her steps not so much graceful as passionate and fun. Okay, what to do? Orika leaned in close to the ingredients and smelled them carefully, as well as the beef stew that was bubbling steadily. She wondered how hot Senri liked her stew; She herself preferred it boiling. And what about spicing it up? Orika couldn't make the dish too spicy or Senri couldn't eat it. But right now it was sooo boring! Stupyfied, she tried looking at the other products to see if there were other dishes to make. Hm... Bananas... Eaten as they were would be okay, but being freezedried might make them not taste as good as fresh ones. She wanted to do something with the onions, but what if Senri were like other dumb kids and couldn't eat one of the most magical veggies on this planet? Oh, crap, what if Senri were a vegetarian? A vegan? A radical vegan determined to stay alive on grass alone? Oh! And they had potato chips too! Orika's brain cycled through banana gravy with pickled cabbage on top and chili peppers wrapped in the cabbage and dipped in cheese and the beef stew gravy. Ah, what the heck? Her hands reached to mix everything together, but on a last whim, Orika yelled out, "Anything here you can't eat, Senri?" She certainly didn't want to ruin a great meal!

The girl continued to pull random ingredients out of the box as she went on trying to figure out what they were. This one particular bag she pulled out had a sort of sweet scent. After holding it close she realized it was freeze-dried peaches. Very nice! This wouldn’t even need to be re-hydrated just like the bananas. The odder was nice, slight but definitely there. Senritsu then wondered if there were other bags filled with the same thing or if every one was filled with something different. If that was the case it would take a bit to figure things out without much help. It didn’t seem Orika knew much about figuring things like this out, but it didn’t matter. Senritsu was quick to label what was unknown and it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to get everything situated in the correct place, named and figured out. “Huh…No, I can eat everything. I don‘t really have any preference in food so go crazy.” Senritsu looked up to look towards the direction of Orika‘s voice. The one thing Senritsu wondered about was whether or not there was anything to drink around here. Some water would be good. Maybe if she searched through the box she could find some tea leaves they could heat up?

"Okay, that's great! Just wait until you taste my awesome creation!" Orika buzzed, truly wanting to create the dishes she imagined in her head. Let's see, there was fried onions and fried potato chips and stir-fried chili peppers and cheese with a dabbing of oil. The oils that were quickly rising from the beef stew made her stop going down that track. She didn't really mind the food she ate since there was very few unhealthy foods in a community of shinobi, but she didn't want to gain any more weight from fat either. So... something healthy. She could crush the red peppers and spread them on the potato chips and then melt down cheese to make cheesy onions and potatoes and... cabbage. This was so hard! The girl picked up each ingredient, her ear cocked for Senri to yell out more strange combinations of food. She wanted to do a fresh vegetable dish for sure. And the beef stew was an entree. And there was dessert to consider. Maybe an appetizer? Dang it, she was a fighter, not a cook preparing to cook for some fat daimyo!

Senritsu yawned, her hand coming up to cover her mouth as she did so. It was late. Senritsu usually would be finding herself a place to sleep by now. But she’d already decided she’d be sleeping at Sukotto’s house that night while he was away. At least she could justify her means by saying she just wanted to make sure that nobody intruded into his house while he was away. Senritsu picked up another bag and opened it. The smell of strawberries intruded her scent receptors almost immediately. There was no doubt what was in the bag. She looked closer, and what she had thought was just another strawberry piece was actually a rather decent sized cockroach. She resealed the bag and walked over towards Orika. “We have a bag of strawberry flavored cockroaches here. How‘s the rest of the stuff going?” Looking over to see what Orika had going on in her own little world of cooking, Senritsu’s nose crinkled. The smells weren’t exactly the perfect mix together in one place. It smelled like a restaurant that supplied only the strangest foods they could offer up to their customers.

Cockroaches? Orika's stomach gurgled, eager for the tasty insect. She went out of the kitchen and picked up the cockroaches. "They're so big, but got that nice brown texture Suiji-san always says makes for the best cooking. Hm, dried nicely and it tastes sweet and with a nice, crunchy texture too! Man, this emergency food is pretty good!" Orika exclaimed, giving Senri a sweet smile before going back into the kitchen. It looked like Senri had exhausted all their boxes and Orika didn't want to have to raid for more when they had plenty right here. "A dash of sour, a dash of sweet, makes the boys go tweet tweet!" she sang. It was part of an old song from the lady's school she attended where the sole purpose of a female's existence was to find and serve her husband as best as she could. People there were obsessed about boys, not real life. Well... she shouldn't talk. Orika found herself wondering if Karite passed the exam without her. She hadn't seen him at the ceremony, at least not yet. She hadn't meant to fall for him. It was just so natural. An angry boiling snapped the girl back to reality and she got right to work bending reality to her will. The crazy ideas she had in her head came together somehow as she worked, her hands moving as fast and sure, like someone who had done this for years. Orika did do some cooking, but her training mostly came from learning never to waste a second or a single ingredient. After a little while, she came out of the kitchen, bearing her hard work.

-Beef Stew with added gravy, vinegar, cheese sauce, onions, and peppers
-Pickled Cabbage glazed with minced chili peppers and rubbed with onion
-Bananas with melted cheese sauce
-Chips with spicy, melted cheese sauce
-Strawberry-glazed cockroaches for dessert

Orika sat down next to Senritsu and filled her a cup with some water she garnered from the tap. "Good eatings!" she cheered, not waiting for the other girl before digging in and starting with the bananas. Her chopsticks clicked in her hands as the girl downed the food, eating her fill and probably some extra for tomorrow. Couldn't be too careful! Everything was so good, but she thought the chips were just a tad bit stale. Strange enough, none of the other goods tasted bad at all. Orika picked up a cockroach with her chopsticks and deposited one on Senri's plate. "I can't make them like the store does, but the strawberries should give it the extra tangy taste that a lot of people like," she commented. Without a second to hesitate, Orika dug into the food quite happily.

Senritsu couldn’t help but give her friend a strange, almost accusing look of insanity as she began to speak of the cockroaches like they were something more special than the finest silks. The way she described them made the taste of bile rise in her throat. She knew she wasn’t feeling dizzy any longer, so this must have just had to do with the so called desert the girl was making for them. Well, herself, there was no way Senritsu would eat something like that. Not to say she hasn’t eaten bugs when she was younger, but she was a child! All children do that when they don’t know any better. She remembered slurping up a worm once and the thought made her gag. The smell of all the food together was definitely not making this any better on her stomach or her sense of smell. When the Tokiha girl readied the food and sat down with Senritsu, she looked over it all. Everything smelled nice, and most of it seemed to have a cheesy tang to it. Cheese was something she really liked so that was a definite plus. Getting some of the Stew, some of the bananas and some of the chips to eat. When Orika placed one of her strange food choices on her plate, Senritsu half choked on her banana. “Ehem…no thank you…I‘m not really interested in cockroaches…”

The dinner between the two girls was fun, Senritsu finished her food and told Orika it was about time she headed back to the Uchiha Estate. She bid her new friend goodnight and told her she hoped to see her again soon. With that, she went back to the Estate and nestled herself into the couch comfortably. She curled up, using her arms as a sort of pillow as she slowly fell asleep. At least this time, her slumber wasn’t infiltrated by another horrid nightmare. This time it was a sweet, feathery dream. A remembrance of time with Sukotto she’d spent before. Memories of laughter, exhaustion, eating together, and training together ran through her mind. And those times when they were just there talking, not really doing much other than enjoying the company they were given. The last picture Senritsu could remember seeing her dreams, was the older boy’s face, that smile he wore when he spoke to her, and his hand reaching out for hers. Reaching out towards him, as soon as her hand touched his, the memory went black, and her dreams were over.

"Hmph. Suit yourself!" Orika giggled at Senri's reaction to a perfectly nutritious food choice. She really didn't understand why people would miss out on trying all they could for fear of it tasting gross. If it did, one could simply spit the item out. Hm, whatever. Orika finished the meal, laughing with Senritsu as the girls shared conversation. The Uchiha reminded her that she could be anything she wanted and although they sometimes disagreed, there was no pressure to change who she was or wanted to be. As Senri left to take a much needed nap, Orika cleaned up the area and stored a bit of the food in her belt pack for later use. Alright! With a full tummy, she could now bravely face the mass of blindly delighted new genin. Joy.

Wait. There would be no benefit to seeing the others be genin except to cheer Karite on. She'd have to face countless questions. The girl sighed and decided that she'd tackle all this tomorrow. Tonight she would party until she dropped... in her dreams. Orika found an empty, clean bed and happily laid down. She hardly did anything today, but that deep talk she had with Senri about their values took more out of her than any physical training.

[Sleeps]
PostPosted: Fri Aug 14, 2009 8:04 pm

In accordance with the unwritten Tategami law, she avoided hospitals with a burning passion. There was nothing inherently scary, except for the fact that the attendants always made sure she was fully healed before even setting foot outside the unnaturally sterile-smelling place. Yuki always made sure to scold her for her unsanitary ways. Bah! Orika had never even gotten a cold in her life! Her immune system rocked!

She let her train of thought hit a brick wall and rolled onto her stomach, clutching the pillow with both hands. Stupid hospital. Stupid shinobi. Stupid Kage. Now that she'd had a nap and her thinking restarted, Orika could glance back at the day's conversation and decide whether any of it made sense. Usually she did this to see whether anything she said offended people and they didn't tell her, but she was sure that Senri was someone who would tell her immediately if she said anything hurtful. Other people just kept everything in until it exploded. That was a really unhealthy thing to do because she found that the subconscious rarely worked with her. Sure, it was useful in deja vu situations, but then she couldn't figure out why the hell the place felt familiar until it was too late. And then not to mention the fact that-

For some reason, she couldn't keep her mind straight. Maybe it was because she was still laying on the bed and her body wanted to sleep. The bright moonlight streaming through the window showed that the bitten cookie hasn't even reached its high point yet. She hadn't been asleep for more than a couple of hours. Orika sat up, pillow still in her tight grasp. As her vision cleared, the girl's rusty eyes landed on a discolored mark on the wall. Getting closer, she found herself raising a hand and matching it to the scratch marks on the wall. Her nails fit perfectly. Disconcerted, Orika dragged her hand down the grooves, which extended for about six-inches. The walls were made out of wood meant to stand an enemy invasion or an injured shinobi's rage. How could she have made that... and not remembered a thing? What had she been doing in this room...?

Bits of the paint flaked off and hit her bare foot. The dim white pieces scattered, jumping off to make room for the single salty drop that followed. She imagined herself on a ship heading for Shimagakure's mainland after her first time running away from shinobi life. The girl had sat motionless on deck, ignoring the icy rain that drenched her all night. When the morning came and the fog cleared, Orika remembered how the island suddenly came into view. There was a point when there was nothing, then she could suddenly see every detail, from Shima's sparkling beaches with its sole run down shack to the terraced hills that held the rice farms in the distance. It was the same now. What had been a room full of darkness and shadow was suddenly replaced by clarity. The moon came out from behind a tree to reveal to her that tonight was indeed a full moon, previously overshadowed by branches and tricking her into thinking otherwise.

"Mum?" Orika whimpered, looking back at the now empty bed. She slid to her bottom and for a few moments, just stared into the silent room.

Right. She didn't want to be a shinobi because then she'd be restricted on what she could do. Right. Aya and Kana were shinobi, probably chuunin by now, and they did whatever pleased them, even running away and risking everything. Nobody stopped her and Karite from terrorizing the night life when they were students. Nobody stopped the Kage and Kazuma from burning things at their discretion. It was an island built on rebels, rogues that nobody could even pretend to control. Forcing someone to do something against their beliefs prepared a leader for mutiny.

So why did she skip out on the genin exams? There had to be a reason, even if she wasn't quite sure of it herself. Orika tore her eyes from the empty bed and searched deep within herself, closing her eyes as if that would let her see into a place that could not be explored. It was... scary being alone and forced to actually reflect. She found herself trembling, more afraid then she'd ever been. This was a path she did not want to go down, so deep within herself. The girl's breathing grew uneven and a chill ran through her body like lightning.

She didn't want to do this. She didn't want to do this. No, no, NO! But the boat refused to stop. It was caught on a current and headed towards the dismal dock, where a bell clanged to let the island know of its arrival. It was time to arrive! Ready or not. Welcome to the land of the shinobi!

No, not ready. Afraid. Unwilling. Orika shut her eyes and blanked her mind. Her breathing grew steady and her thoughts faded out, saved by a sudden alien ship that descended to transport the island to another dimension. The girl groaned softly and drifted out of consciousness.

Sleep.

Karite had stepped towards the clinic. He did not enter as he normally would. Keeping his hands in his pockets the boy hunched over. He looked down at his brother and nodded. Kore wasnt allowed in this place. It was sterile kept clean for the sick and injured. Tategami themselves tried to avoid the clinic as well. They dealt with their injures at the grounds.

As the boy breathed in deeply he pondered what he would say. He was good with his words but this wasn't a time to be flashy. This was simply a time he need to be forward. If he was going to do that then he was going to have to give himself the element of surprise to put Orika off guard. As Karite slowly entered the Clinic he let his body hug the shadows of the room. Sliding into a chair off to the side, the long haired boy let his silver eyes watch the shaking girl. The women he loved was in such a state. Was it because of her mother, or him? Things were so confusing, he just wanted to steal her mind and read it sometimes so he would understand what was going on with her.
