Saul relaxed slightly, "Yeah... Faster then most other boats her size. Can outrun most starfighters." Still there was something about the woman as she approached. She clearly had non-human blood flowing through her veins, but he still should have been able to get an inkling of her emotional state, instead there was nothing.

Behind him the mechanic chipped in, "Don't you go talking about my ship as though you own her."

She stepped forward slowly and scanned the woman with her eyes, "Mandalorian... I assume you know the meaning of war booty? This ship and her crew are now property of the Jedi order. Do you understand?"

So this was the other force user. Cene thought. Not a problem.
"The Register out front logged a single male human as the crew. Nothing about you, woman. So pardon me if I dont trust everything you say. Though I must admit, its pretty bold for a Jedi to be this far out in Sith Space with "War Booty." Might be something I should ask the sith Embassy about."
She narrowed her eyes and smirked confidently. "It may be a neutral world, but its still legal to chase criminals here. If I were you, I'd rethink my alibi before someone takes you up on it."

She turned back to Saul and pointed at the ship. "How's the hyperdrive on her? That mil-spec too? I'd be willing to offer a bonus for speedy delivery."

Saul wasn't stupid... and apparently the Jedi wasn't either. Now that she'd mentioned it this woman did seem to have that self-confident air that professional soldiers and experienced warriors carried about them.

This confirmed the Jedi's assessment of the woman in his mind, and a mandalorian here, asking about his ship was too much of a coincidence for him. She had to be a bounty hunter, and he was her next target.

Word had to have preceded him here, and now he was beginning to regret those extra jumps to complicate his trail.

The Jedi spoke as he thought about his options, "That threat about the embassy would hold more weight if there weren't more jedi then sith on this dirtball. And what may be a criminal to you could well be an agent of our forces... So I suggest you clear out and find a bounty more worthwhile."

Saul knew that he had to find a way to distract or occupy this kriffing Mandalorian until the artifact's translation and analysis were completed.

((Boy, you're really jumping to conclusions, arent you?))
"I dont bounty hunt. Not Since my father marched away." She said, using the Mando euphemism for death in battle. "But I do want to hire the captain here. Ive got some important cargo that only a big gun ship can transport."
She looked back to Saul. "So Captain, you interested?"

Saul finally decided to play the woman's game, "What sort of cargo? I'm kinda waiting on the academia, and I've got plenty of credits for awhile. If it's important as you say you better make it worth my while."

The Jedi gave him a sidelong glance as though to say, don't play into her hands. Still Saul knew that if he could hold off a combat encounter for a few days it'd be a much better situation.

"Small, valuable, something that I'd rather not trust to your average tramp freighter. And believe me, I can make it worth your while."
She flicked a glance to the Jedi then back to Saul.
"I'd go into more detail, but I dont want word getting around what I want transported. Without proof she's crew, I'm afraid I dont trust your friend there not to blab."

Saul grinned, "She's ship mechanic... just hired on. She's been repairing damage and painting the ship for a couple hours now."

The Jedi held up her paint covered hands as proof, "Name's Akira Kali." She said coldly, knowing that Saul didn't yet know her name.

She eyed the woman suspiciously.
"So what happened to your claims about the Jedi Order? Werent you saying you were a Jedi?"

Something about what she said made Akira's face turn red, "I am a Jedi and a mechanic. You ever wonder who keeps those Jedi aces in the air? People like me. It's pretty useful to know how to fix your ship when it breaks."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 18, 2007 8:58 pm

"But those are Starfighters." Cene said. "This is a bigger bird. And frankly I still dont trust your motives."
She addressed Saul again. "For obvious reasons, I dont trust the Jedi. And I sure as chaos dont trust the Sith for equally obvious reasons. Thats what drew me to you, Captain....?"

"If you're going to be so tight lipped about it, we're not interested." Saul said briskly, "Now get out of here before I have my ship blow you into a thousand bits of meat."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 18, 2007 10:08 pm

Cene arched an eyebrow and placed her hands on her hips. "Look, I'd be suspicious too with this amount of secrecy. But I just plain dont trust your female associate. I'm willing to offer 20k up front for the job. And if you come to the Institute's tap-cafe in two hours, I'll tell you all you want to know about the cargo. Its a neutral place and the campus has a no weapons policy so we'd both be unarmed and in full view of the public. Just make sure to come alone."

She turned to leave and paused at the door. "Any plans on double crossing me, and I'll make sure your ship gets impounded."

With that, the half taung woman sauntered out of the hanger and calmly started walking for the reindevous.

He could turn her offer down of course. That was the risk with this situation. But if he wanted to keep playing at ship captain, then he'd have to come. Especially with that kind of money being offered, the upfront price alone being enough to by a small starship.

There were a few errands she needed to run before the meeting, however...

With the door closing behind the woman Saul frowned, he knew he was in trouble now.

"Well sith, since you didn't feel the need to blast her into oblivion... you might be worth helping out," Akira said briskly. She turned to the half-finished paint job and put her hands on her hips, "We need a way to keep her from impounding your boat."

Saul nodded, "You have an idea?"

"Maybe... It'll also get you moved to another hanger bay to boot." She pulled out a datapad and headed for the door, "I'll be at the BSS office. You finish the paint job."

"What?" Saul asked incredulously, "I'm not a painter..."

"Just point and pull the trigger Saul. I'll be back in a few hours with some documents for your ship." Akira answered as she headed for the door, "You have a few hours to keep that appointment. I wouldn't suggest you take her offer."

Saul shook his head, "I'm not going. It could be a trap."

"Well send a messenger droid or something, don't leave her sitting at the cafe. That'll just piss her off." Akira answered as the door closed behind her. As it shut Akira thought about the sith. Was he worth protecting? She didn't know, but if it kept the sith from expending resources on the republic or the jedi by having them thrown after him, it was well worth it.

Normally, the sith would not be caught so far off guard. But this was an exception, so they planned to launch as many fighters as fast as possible. With only one bay door, this meant they would shoot out of the base like a swarm of angry bees. Of course, most people wouldn't expect to really attack the group as fast as possible. Twenty-four fighters were stationed in the station; only twenty managed to get out alive.

Ritt would take the lead on kills from the beginning. Coming from their starboard side, the fighters did not expect to exit the hangars directly into a wall of plasma being fired from the Jedi ace. It was an extremely dangerous maneuver; shrapnel or ships could easily run into each other, but Ritt didn't care. The first two fighters blew apart from a combination of enemy fire and exploding shrapnel. Three managed to get out before Ritt blew right through two fighters. The pilots were amateurs; scared they'd run into the Jedi, they banked into each other, effectively neutralizing that threat.

Twelve against twenty, and Ritt was not in the mood to play around; however, as much as he searched, the reports of Sith Aces came up like usual, a complete negative. Picking a pair of fighters as his main prey, their efforts proved futile after three banks. Moving in formation restricted their maneuvers, making the twins quick to shoot down. Confirmed kills came from all across the squadron, whom also had gotten the drop on their targets.

"Two on your tail Reverend," Ritt announced.

"Cut to the left, i'll take the leader," Reverend replied, banking left around the station in a wide turn, the first fighter falling for the brake. Two red blasts made the mistake deadly, as Ritt fell behind the second fighter, and following Reverend's example, quickly knocked the fighter out of the sky.

"Protect those bombers!" Ritt replied, as a cry came from a trio was batted down by enemy fire.

"Shuttles have been launched," Tuing's voice announced over the coms.

"One squadron of the enemy has been wiped out. I didn't even break a sweat..." Reverend replied.

"Indeed," Ritt replied.

~~~~~~~
About fourty minutes later, the kill count had been finalized. In the course of one hour, twenty-two minutes, the second corvette had fled deep into sith territory before it could be caught under the gun, and the two squadrons of sith fighters were eliminated. Three bombers destroyed, four fighters with recognizable damage. The marines had lost a squad while taking the main deck, but Aareo's help proved unnecessary. Despite reports of potential sith on board, they didn't even materialize, much to the despair of the squadron and Ritt.
"Send the report to Stryder. We'll hold this position until orders change," Captain Tuing announced. "Ritt..."
"Yes sir?" The jedi responded, snapping to attention. The captain was about to say something, but it looked like the words wouldn't come out of his mouth.
"I know you were expecting more, but believe me. Stryder's a traditionalist. Its best to play the safest hand you got. He takes risks when he needs to, and never takes chances. This is something that the council probably expects you to do as well. You won't be young forever, so treasure the adrenaline trips while you still have a chance. Let me talk with the squadron, I'll be the bad guy this time around. Just don't buzz the deck for a while, okay?"
Nodding, the miraluka went to his chambers to rest, though the fatigue was from disappointment rather than a job well done...
