Ah, it's time for Clara's long-awaited review of Mulan II! Spoilers ahead, if you even care. If you haven't seen the movie, I'm bound to confuse you.
The movie was pretty mediocore. I really enjoyed the first Mulan. I liked the story, the characters, and the voices. I still thought the art was pretty good in this one, but it wasn't as interesting or good as the first. That's understandable, but still.
I have to say that the disc was scratched, so I missed a pretty important chunk of the movie. Namely, the part where Mulan is in that other ruler's palace while the princess and the soldiers are off doing their than and that Shang fellow has just climbed out of the river. I assume that Mulan agreed to marry the prince or something. I really don't know.
But unless that scene explained something important that my inference and the coloring book (yes, I have the coloring book) didn't, then I have to ask, what the hell happened to China? The Mongols? I mean, that seemed like some pretty heavy political war s**t. And it just dissapears.
I mean, I understand that it's a Disney movie that is trying to teach kiddies to follow their hearts and stuff. But it never occurs to the princesses that their refusal to marry the princes could cause a huge war and death and destruction and famine and all of those good things. They talk about duty to their father and country, but the moral problem of being responsible for a war never comes up. It's not like I expected Disney to bring me a movie that dealt with complex moral and political problems. But c'mon, they just totally ignored China in a movie that is supposed to be about saving China.
And there are three princesses, with three soldiers. Not a good idea, Shang. Dumbass. You know they'll spend half the movie trying to get into eachothers' pants.
And then everyboy is so shocked that the princesses have to have an arranged marriage. Oh my God, an arranged marriage in ancient China. You think?!
About half way through the movie, when the princesses and soldiers start realizing how much they love eachother, the princesses break into an unimpressive song about how they just want to be like other girls. My cynical inner socialist has a hard time feeling sorry for these gals. You want to be a dirt-poor peasant, b***h? Go ahead! Leave! We don't need you! See how well farming suits you. You'll come crawling back in a day, mark my words!
Oh, and the singing in the first one was a lot better.

I don't like CLAMP very much, but I've always thought that their manga had some good artwork.

3nodding I've always liked Clamp's artwork, but their stories seem to have the same style over and over.

I haven't read Tsubasa in a long while but this makes Kage scared.
