"I see. I didn't mean to upset you. I was just concerned. if they police or the authorities didn't want to help you then, it stands to think they might not want to now either. I'm sorry I invaded that part of your life."

His voice was soft, and he shook his head lightly.

"I know somethings hurt worse than others. and if there's ever soemthign you don't want to tell me, just say so. I won't push the issue."

"You say that now, but your head will always wonder. I'm not as good a mind doctor as Fein is, but I have an idea on how it works after all." Upset? She wasn't at upset yet because that wasn't the upsetting part of the story, that was just the prologue.

"And they did help...help me fill out police reports and forms, make unsavory arrangements and also ship up to Fleet a month earlier than planned. The justice system still has a little honor left down there I guess." A look up from her shoes. "I'm sorry for being sensitive about it...I just, lost a lot is all to it."

"Not a problem. how about we get you lost in some work to forget about it?"

A small smile and walking over to her with a folder.

"This is the most recent you have on Leviathan. do you have any tests for things such as regeration that won't involve something like cutting a piece off and seeing if or how long it grows back?"

oh yes, he was thinking about his Hydra idea and how to see if it could do the head growing thing without actually having to test by decapitating it.

That was also odd for her. The fact that James was always ready to let work have more time with her than he did. None of the other men she dated probably even thought about that. For them it was an ultimatum, them or her work. Guess who won all those battles? But that's what she got for dating mostly techs and lackeys.

A blink at the folder then a look up to James. "No actually. Well...I guess I could set up something along the lines of creating just living tissue as opposed to the whole creature." That she had done several times...after all, fighting creatures took rather large life threatening chunks out of each other sometimes." I guess I could see if I can get regenerative properties to be within the cell structure. Via a natural means or through a sort of integrated nanomachine deal."

Ah work, but she felt kind of guilty about taking to it again. But James had started it so it was okay, right?

Lillia stood in her room calculating all of the things she would need. She didn't have enough space in her suitcase as she had added to her wardrobe here on Earth. She looked at the folded piles on her bed and then heard a discreet cough behind her.

"I cannot believe you are going to go when you know that your father and I don't want you up there. You put your father in the hospital last time Lillia, do you really think he can survive again?" Jacklyn stood in her daughter's doorway, arms folded across her chest, her eyes cold.

Lillia sighed and turned to face her. "Mother, we've been through this, many times in fact. I gave Jel- Dr. Trevale my word that I would be her assistant. She has graciously held my job while I came back here with my promise to return as soon as I could. And now Dad is back home and he's doing fine." Turning back around she continued her task as more clothes joined those already in. "And he told me it was fine to go back if that's what I wanted. He actually wants me to be happy."

Jacklyn's eyes narrowed and she determined she would have to speak with her husband about this. It wouldn't do him filling her head with the thought that they approved of this when they clearly didn't. The drugs, she blamed the drugs. They had been making him act quite peculiarly lately. She had actually heard him laugh the other day and been so shocked she had dropped the knife she had been using to prepare the meal with. "Happy? He doesn't know what you want and frankly neither do you. You had a perfectly good opportunity to study with Dr. Ashton here and you turned it down. If you had any idea the lengths I had to go to to convince him how good you were..."

Lillia rolled her eyes and listened to her mother's speech. "Mother," she said calmly. "You took it upon yourself to call in a favor. I never wanted to work with Dr. Ashton. I always wanted to work with Dr. Jelena and I got what I wanted. Has it occurred to you that I'm one of the youngest on teh Echo project? Do you realize that I am close to the good doctor herself? I'm her assistant, Mother, a trusted and exalted position. And I am grateful for it too. I got it on my own and I'm proud of the work I have done and will continue to do, with or without," she continued tightly, "your blessing or agreement."

Jacklyn's face hardened into cold marble and she swung around and left without another word. She couldn't disown Lillia because she would be back on Earth in a matter of weeks with nowhere to go. She would bring her willfull daughter to heel and teach her some respect. Then she would graciously allow her to come work for her. Yes, she mused. It was a rather fitting punishment for her disobedience.

Tempest awoke from a short nap some time later, and realized the perdicament he had gotten himself into... He was trapped, trapped like a winged cat tied up in yarn! The imposiblity of it, the doom and horrible fates lurked just about the horizen, the false hopes of living foreever, the eternal dream of eating everything that their is to eat, the vision of tommorow lost! "Mew."

The cat rolled and rolled and rolled some more, until he fell from the table and onto the floor. "Meow."

He struggled against all hope, he struggled for freedom for the sack of his kingdom, Kepiopolis. With Tempest lost, all was lost... everything would be overrun, all would suffer the great wrath of... Tiamat! King of teh dragons... or of a similarly high yet not equally important position! "Mew!" The cat exclaim, forsaken by his people, left to die in this unholy place, a paw when to his forehead, "Mew!" And he lay very still, accepting his fate, death and the great beyond.

"You can do that? I mean..how can you just cultivate a basic..well..chucnk of flesh without creating the whole of the echo? hmm. though according to teh stories..teh head splitting thing in a hydra was kind of like a really souped up mitosis. head severled, neck woudl divied, adn become two necks and each woudl regrow a head. so it's an advanced form of an age old cellular process."

He sat down by her, and looked at the infomation on the folder, an dopened another one.

"Your dragons it state have advanced regeneration abilities. somethign similar to that I would assume is part of the unique Hydra trait."
PostPosted: Sat Oct 01, 2005 8:55 pm

"Easy enough really. The only difference is that one has a mind and cognitive thought, the other doesn't. Basic as the living tissue they use for skin graphing in humans...same basic principle anyway. All about cellular division and growth." It was still a nice thing that he kept up with her thinking, even contributed to it.

A nod at the folder. "The dragons base species is komodo dragon, but also mixed in is the regenerative properties of little lizards that can detach and regrow their tails. That's where they get that property. I suppose I could go back into the DNA strain and isolate that property, extract it as a pure trait and store it for another use."

"Indeed. might have for an added way to alter an echo that is injured often, liek your Fenrir variant. give him that, so when the alpha or other packmates tear into him he can recover a bit quicker."

Then a chuckle.

"You know, this is kind of fun. like putting together a biological jigsaw puzzle where you make up peices as you go."
PostPosted: Sat Oct 01, 2005 9:21 pm

"I guess you could look at it that way. Except this puzzle is a lot harder with a lot more pieces and you can't cheat by cutting pieces to make them fit together. Nope, not in the world of genetics at all. Too risky." Though she had to admit, she was even fascinating herself at this moment.

And a nod. "And you're right, I could apply it to the rest of my Echoes...could be quite beneficiary." Oooh ideas.

"Okay, lets say we try to make and advanced Mitosis compenent combinded with the regneration compopent int eh dragons dna, make a sample..neck? and see if it divides like it's supposed to?"

James was interested in this. made him feel really useful again. Might as well say so.

"I enjoy this, Jelena. I feel..useful again. more than just an appointment checker and reminder. like I'm really working nad doign somethign important again."
PostPosted: Sat Oct 01, 2005 10:25 pm

Well that made her feel better about it all. That he enjoyed doing it, wanted to do it out of the sheer purpose that it made him feel good and useful to do so. Gave him another purpose since Meta had been reduced to a basic maintains and emergency project. And she smiled at him, having that certain spark in her eyes.

"Well...actually we could go with a...worm route. Meaning I would basically get a sample of tissue to divide and culture itself. Then we simple cut it in half and watch it wriggle around like a worm and see what it does from here. If things go right, it should regenerate to its full length on both pieces, seeing as there is no coherent mind to tell which piece to grow."

"how long does it take to cultivate something for that test? it sounds like a rather complicated way to test that kind of ability."

he was looking through files again, comparing the dragon and the leviathan echo species.

"How do you plan to size a hydra if you make one? there's no solid idea of how big the creature actually was."
PostPosted: Sat Oct 01, 2005 10:39 pm

"Shouldn't take too long if the growth process is forcibly sped up. Without the mind part to worry about really, there's no risk of something bad on a unethical level. And unless you want to go lopping off parts of things, it's the only way to do it really. Computer simulations won't help with this."

But a slight shrug as she was looking over files as well. "The best I can do is mix base species like I did for the cerberus and then just hope for the best as always. Size always eludes me when I'm doing new species..." Though she was working on that too, had been cooking up something that involved natural growth hormones in early stages.

"If you can do that, why don't you use it on the other echoes in waiting to see how things come out? or does that runa risk of soem kind of damamge to a fully 'created' echo egg?"

then a slight grin.

"Yes I know..it takes time and a watched pot never boils."
