I play te horn and I love it. I'm not sure if I really want to do marching band in highschool if I'm going to have to play mellophone. One of the girls in my pointe class plays one, and she says it's the most annoying instrament she's ever heard. I'm technically the section leader right now, but competion's all of one other girl. It's not like it really matters anyway, for the moment it just means I have my pick of top or bottom line on split peices. I wish I could play something that roughly resembles melody. I'm stuck with harmony most of the time, which means I get to play the downbeat on marches. Woo...

wierd in my band horns and mellos get the upbeats on marches. it is rare but sometimes we do get melody. we get countermelodys alot too

What is it...March of the Peck Horns? I think that's the name of the march that Horns actually have the melody. I've never played it though...wish I could.

Is it hard to play french horn I was thinking of playing it for out lower level band. I already play trumpet and I was going to play that for our higher band and my music class. Would it be hard for me to play french horn?

To be frank, yes it would be. Horn is a totaly different monster from Trumpet. I should know considering I switched from trumpet to Horn in Middle School. Horns require more air and a very good ear to play. On a trumpet you hold down a certain combination of valves and get a single note in a couple of octives. On Horn you dont even need valves (Im serious my private instructior can play using nothing but his hand in the bell and emboshure to change notes) when you hold down a certain number of valves on a Horn you can get lots of different notes. Not to mention their heavy and you have to hold the little buggers up (your not supposed to rest it on your Knee)

On the bright side we get all the pretty stuff and melodic lines in band so woo!!

If your serious about switching then DO IT! We love seducing trumpets over to our side of the fence and for all its toughness playing Horn is WAY fun!

Meh. I tried playing a trumpet and all I got was a really airy noise. I should just stick to my horn and my mello xD

But, yes, it's a completely different instrument, and probably the most difficult brass instrument to play overall. It requires a good ear and a lot of air, like previously mentioned, but it also requires very fine adjustment of your embochure, especially in the higher range of the instrument. What would adjust to move a trumpet up from one note with a valve combination to the next higher note with the same combination might move you an entire octave on a horn. If you play a horn, you will make mistakes fairly often, simply because of the precision you need to work it properly.

We do love having extra people on our side though, since the rest of the brass overshadow us on all but the most important parts for us. And it is fun. We played a couple of pieces for our concert season last year that had prominent horn parts, and I loved it, but they can't do that this year cause I graduated and they have no other horns... Horn is also very pretty in the hands of a good player. In some songs, it easily rivals a trumpet in prominence and for a solo part, a trumpet holds nothing to a good horn. I especially loved my solo lines last concert season, they were so pretty. ( I was first chair from ability and because there were no other horns... not having another horn to play with saddened me. sad )

I played Trumpet at first, for a few years. Then eventually, the band director told me that one of the other French Horn players was dropping out, and they needed another one. Bad. So, he kinda forced me to try out for it. They showed me how to hold it, make notes, the trigger, and the Concert Bb Major Scale. He said I did pretty good.

So, during the summer, they gave me a French Horn and a Mellophone to practice with. And, because they needed one really badly they said, I didn't need to pay a rental fee for the summer.

I really didn't have much of a hard time switching. I just memorized the fingerings and all, and I got it in about a month. Of course, it was easier since I had been playing an instrument for a long time. My director was a bit surprised at how well I was doing for a beginner, since all they gave me to learn with was a fingering chart and Louie Louie.

So, long story short, I don't play trumpet in school anymore. However, I still have my old cornet at home, which I play for fun.

...And, this is my first post in this guild. Hello everyone.

Ok, understand this, anyone who doubts horns!!!! It doesn't matter if we usually or rarely get melodies!!! We usually get countermelodies, and without us, most instruments would never know what concert they're in or if they're flat or sharp!!! Understand french horn is the closest thing to the human voice!!! Oboe is too, but unless you wanna hurt your jaw playing that, be grateful for your instrument, OK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?

Horns rule, but it's not always the only instrument!! Understand that as well!!!!!!

At first I wasn't really interested in Horn, but I just kind of went with it after I learned the supposidly "most difficult brass instrument" in about four days, six maybe seven hours total. So I stuck with it for concert music. =P But deep down, I really missed my trombone. D=

So I play that for jazz. heart
