If your section leaders/instructers are like mine you'll need the strength it can get heavy. But don't give up the mellophone is an amazing instrument. Unfortunately I injured my back and had to switch to pitt crying . Let me know how you do k? You'll have loads of fun I promise. I've been in the pitt for two days and miss my mellophone, whose name is James, terribly.

I'd say although it is harder being the only one, it really boosts your confidence. I had to take over as the only one my junior year. John Willaims show *shudders* Good music, but I never ever ever want to play it again, unless it's to get on someone's nerves. The bell is big, more shiny-nes to show off than a silly trumpeter, and it's lighter than a tuba or baritone, with none of the slide action of a trombone. It's the perfect marching instrument ^^
And did I show off my senior year... lots of good rock music and excellent mello parts =D Man I so could have transposed the lead trumpet part on the fourth movement and kicked some major butt xD

I was practicly the only one until 7th grade. (the other guy couldn't play squat) As of this moment there are 4 of us. (the one who couldn't play squat finally quit)
Our small section overwhelms the trumpets...it's kinda funny, because they outnumber us.

I played a lot of instruments in high school band, but french horn was my primary. Since we only marched once a year (small school, no football team...) we didn't have those mello horn things ya'll are talking about. I've never even seen one before. I didn't get to keep my horn since it was owned by the school, but I did by my own mouthpiece because otherwise the school expected us to wash and share the ones they provided (gagorama!). I still get it out everyonce in a while for practice, but I think my skill are slipping. If I could afford a horn, I'd so buy one and no one in my neighborhood would get a moment's worth of peice! LOL
What was I talking about? Oh yeah, marching! The one time of the year that we marched it was a ten mile march. But since we didn't have marching uniforms (real ones, we marched in a monogrammed shirt, jeans, and white athletic shoes, LOL), we probably were more comfortable than the other high school bands. September in the middle of Texas means that you can still get oocassional days in the 100s. Yay. And marchign in that, for ten miles, lugging a f horn is several R rated words strung together. But the music was soooooooo worth it.

Well maybe I would as long as I wasn't playing African Symphony the dang song is practically middle c and up for the mellos with no break and even higher for the trumpets. (I have to pity them they'll squish me) But what did you play? The music had to be good.

We would play several songs actually. The school song, which was based on the new year's even song. The name of that one escapes me at the moment, sorry. Since none of our songs ran for more than a couple of minutes, we had a whole list. But I don't remember the names of all of them. I graduated from high school nearly ten years ago... The worst part? We didn't have marchign instruments like a Susaphone for the Tubas or a Mellophone for the F Horns, so we had to memorize our music. But it was fun, and good exercise!

I've heard that Sousaphones put a lot of stress on the shoulders which can cause back pain later on. Maybe it was hurting his back?
But yeah, since it was the only marchign we did during the whole school year, the school wasn't going to pitch in for marching instruments. I'd like to try a Mellophone sometime, and see what the difference is, if any in sound and quality. To me, they just kinda look like giant trumpets. LOL

Know trumpet fingerings before you play a mello, heh. They sound more brassy than a horn does, and can't go as low. But they project a lot better and have more... oomph? They also have an easier time with higher notes, at least easier than a single horn does. Double horns have the upper range of a mello and the sound of a concert horn, though they still miss out on the projection. ^^

my band instructor informed us that mellophones aren't real instruments because they don't have french horn fingerings and they aren't as long as a french horn when streightened out. yet they are marching french horns. i don't care though i loved playing the mellophone. my school doesn't pay for anything for the band we have to raise it all ourselves.

The horn I played on in High School had a trigger, so theoretically I could reach the upper notes. But if I reached too many notes too often, my lips would give out. Which would suck! So I usually took on the lower notes that the other horn players didn't want to play. As far as projection goes, we never had that problem. 4 horn players my senior year, and we could drown out the 15 trumpet players whenever we wanted.
French Horns FTW!

I wish my horn section was like that. It consists of me and one other person(and she's not very good) because the only other girl who can play usually plays saxophone. Ugh. Oh well. French Horns rock!
