Generally speaking, I would hope that members would either be Seated or have been in the squad for a good while before learning Martial Arts.
Shikai is at at least 2 months.

Ok I'll just develop my character around the squad. Oh that seated part reminds me. Do I fight for rank ups or do I get appointed?

Ok I'll just develop my character around the squad. Oh that seated part reminds me. Do I fight for rank ups or do I get appointed? Generally speaking, I would hope that based on how we at Seventh work, either the Captain or Vice Captain of the squad would organise periodical Seating Contest to determine the ranks of it's members. There may also be room for attain a better seat outside of this periodical cycle of contests for "special merit" of sorts, but those are usually for the ranks of Vice Captain and Captain, and discussed in the Crew Forum.
