I would never have guessed so many FHorn players existed...I was recently a freshman in concert band, and I was the only F Horn player in it, as well as the only freshman F Horn player in the entire city. That tells you not a lot of people care... There are way too many other woodwinds, but I love the French Horn. I started out on Bb Horn, but then I was switched to double horn. (thank goodness) Anyone know why there's such a thing as a french horn mute...? I thought mutes were used to make each note sharper, but I was also told that the reason we put our hands in the bell was to keep our instrument from going sharp... So, what's the point of having a mute for the instrument...?

fredsgrl365 I am now a senior in high school and love my french horn/mellophone. This year for marching band we are playing Thriller and Beetlejuice it's awsome. I can't wait for our first competition. At my skool we do this thing called "tour of skools", which is where we go to the elementary skools and play reconizible tunes to try to convince the 5th graders to join band.Thos year we played the Starwars theme, Indiana Jones theme, and a song called "Super Heros r Us". in Super Heros R Us it has 4 different theme songs, Superman theme, James Bond theme, Batman theme, and my personal favorite, Austin Powers theme! I just love the F.Horn and band.

Been playing horn for six years, mello for four. It's a great instrument either way and I wouldn't change it for the world ^^
Only issue is some of those really high notes, you know, the ones you never can seem to get out. Played 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' my freshman year and boy it was a pain. Never dipped below a third line B-flat save three spots in the song.
Next year we're playing Black Magic Woman (Santana) and that one has some nasty A-B-C#-D-E(sustained) sixteenth note runs, at 140 BPM in 4/4. Fun stuff. Hard run at the end of Carry On Wayward son (last year piece) C(thrid space)-D-E-flat-F-G in sixteenth notes. That was a tricky one.

At first the french horn was little hard to play~ But its been 7 years and I learned to really love it!!! The music and tone of the instrument is awesome and I hope I get to play as well as some of the professional french horn players out there someday!

The materials and shape of the mute give the instrument a different tonal quality. The french horn is naturally out of tune so thats why we use our hands to mute it slightly. Stopped french horn is awesome in my opinion. oh yeah I'm a senior this year and it's my second year of being section leader. I ended up recruiting 3 horn players to join my section for this year. I'm giving my B.D. his largest horn section yet out of his 15 something years of teaching band.

Just wondering because my friend told me he saw a band where their entire french horn section had mutes... Well, that's pretty cool. I should get one now considering one of my pieces of music has a mute part... Arigato gozaimasu senpai!!!

Ok, so I was in a rally and was talking with some ppl and asked them if they played any instuments and I met this person who used to play F.Horn then quit. So, being that I have only played for a year I asked him if he had any tips and he told me that he had only 1, which was to quit! I told well that is kind of a problem cuz I am the best player in my grade, but not a section leader cuz um...only higher grades are able to be section leader, but i bet I will be one someday!
p.s. any tips...
