With our eyes wide open
We'll fight 'til we're broken
We rise and fall

Rune felt a little better as Shikarama talked and praised him. He started to smile a little at the compliment, but once Shikarama said 'basics' he knew he was done for. 'Most valuable' really cut him deep. He'd been so eager to leave that he only bothered with one jutsu, Water Walking. Rune unintentionally cringed, unsure of how to tell Shikarama. This was gong to send him away. What use was a Genin who could only walk on water and steal chakra? "About the basics..." He didn't finish his sentence. While he could make a clone, it was a Haze one and cost a lot of chakra. Rune couldn't find words to explain himself and settled for staring at his feet.

Shikarama Nara, The Dedicated Genius

Shikarama sighed lightly as Rune's smile faded, with the boy merely saying, "about the basics" struggling to speak up. Shikarama stepped past him, walking towards the tree nearby.
"Well come on there, we got plenty to address..." He said to Rune, ready to lead and teach him through all the basics, other then the one he had to master. The boy didn't really say which, so he'd have to get the boy to speak up, or go through everything with him. "We got quite a few to go over, the transformation jutsu, the clone jutsu, Tree climbing without hands, water walking, and perhaps the most valuable first jutsu, the substitution." He waited for a response from the boy before turning back to face him. He would begin the lesson by going over the transformation. "The transformation is most often the first jutsu a ninja goes over. It is the easiest to learn and it is the jutsu that works as the most basic form of espionage to a ninja. It allows one to produce an a chakra cover over oneself, making a person appear as someone or ever something else. One's voice and texture are also effected, but not scent. It can be used not only to disguise oneself, but allow one to take advantage of the unique shape in various ways. After mastering it, one can even learn to transform with another person to take even large forms, while sharing the chakra and hand seal requirements." Shikarama allowed him to take all this in before continuing. "Now for someone new at this, these hand seals will be needed." He began to show the boy each of these seals. He again gave the boy time to go over these. "As you gain better control over your chakra and the jutsu, you'll be able to transform with a single seal. Now you'll just need to integrate the seals with forming and drawing on your chakra. Once you do that you imagine the form you want to take to the best of your ability and activate the jutsu." He would lean against the tree, giving the boy a chance to try.

Ok, Shikarama can teach him each of the remaining academy jutsu. We just have to rp each of them out in at least one post, while you spend some of the words on them.

With our eyes wide open
We'll fight 'til we're broken

Rune watched Shikarama intently. He listed all the academy jutsu that needed to be learned. "I learned water walking," he commented quietly. Shikarama then talked about starting with substitution, talking about what it can do with mastery. Turning into people... Why had he looked past this jutsu? It was more vital than he had realized. He mentally took that bit of information in. It'd be helpful for sneaking around. The scent piece was extra interesting. He'd need to watch for that if he ever did any espionage. Rune copied the hand seals Shikarama made. He was sloppy at first, but he did a few times until it was acceptable. He was a little slow and would need to work on that bit. Then his teacher mentioned only needing one seal. His speed wouldn't matter if he could master it enough for just one.

Shikarama leaned against the tree, a clear sign that Rune would need to try it. He took a deep breath and exhaled shakily. Training was much easier alone, where he wasn't afraid of failing. But this was his only chance to learn these basics and they might just be the thing to save his life. He mentally formed the seals before trying it physically. He did them quickly, trying to get it over with. His hand slipped on the last one and when he tried to summon his chakra, all he got was a puff of air in his face and a quick chest pain where there chakra failed to leave. He shook his head. "Speed won't matter if you can't form the seals correctly," he muttered under his breath, angry at himself. He tried again, forming each one carefully. He shot his chakra out and a huge puff of air appeared around him. He looked down hopefully, but found his same old body. What did I mess up this time? Rune mentally replayed Shikarama's instructions.

He smacked his own face. He forgot to pick a form to transform in to. What an idiot, he thought, hurt at his own failure. He stared at his feet, unable to look up to see what he imagined a look of disappointment on Shikarama's face. He formed the seals a little faster this time, trying to complete the jutsu before his teacher could stop him and call him a horrible ninja. He forced the chakra outwards, imaging a body to become. A third puff of air expanded around him. On the inside was Rune, but it looked just like Shikarama. Tall and standing in a Leaf village kind of way. He turned to his teacher, holding his arms out so his teacher could clearly judge the transformation.

Shikarama Nara, The Dedicated Genius

Shikarama raised an eyebrow as Rune said he had learned water walking. That was quite unusual, as, among the techniques the water walking technique was the most advanced and the hardest to master. The kid was impressing him even while he doubted himself so. Shikarama watched as the boy attempted the seals several times, reminding the boy, "Take your time. speed matters much less then completing the jutsu. This is only training, you don't need to impress me, even if you've already managed to do that." He allowed Rune to work out the seals. "Now, work to draw on your chakra and use it with the seals" Rune would make a first attempt, trying to move to fast and causing the chakra to backfire on him a bit. The boy reminded himself about speed, before focusing on trying again, and for all means and purposes, he did everything right, but then, as the smoke formed and cleared, nothing had changed. The boy had been so focused on his efforts, he never focused on something to turn into as well. Shikarama just smiled. "Keep going, you almost have it." He let the boy do it once more, and this time, the boy changed, not just into anyone, but into Shikarama himself. The jounin smiled, clapping his hands lightly in approval. "Now then, let's hear that voice." He allowed Rune to do so, before telling him. "Try it a couple more times, make sure you have transformation down. Then we will move onto the clone technique." He allowed the boy to do what he needed. He stood up from the tree, approaching the boy, patting him on the head.
"By the way, Rune, what are your plans at this point? Do you intend to remain in the village much longer?" He asked the boy. Giving Rune a chance to speak, Shikarama would make an offer. "If you intend to leave, how would you like to travel with me. I could continue your training as we go, perhaps?" He had some hopes for this boy as a good student, and would be honored to have the fuka traveling with him. Provided he gave an answer, Shikarama would step back again to continue the lesson.
"For now, let's move to the clone jutsu. It is a fundamental jutsu that acts as the basis between genjutsu and ninjutsu. It allows one to create illusionary clones, that can act as distractions and diversions. It is the weakest of the clone techniques, but it costs little chakra and is fairly easy to use in comparison. These are the seals used for it by genin." Once again he displayed the seals, and this time, demonstrated the chakra change. He released the jutsu himself to demonstrate, as not 1, not 5, but 10 clones appeared around him, all of them perfect illusionary copies of him. "Once you get the hand seals then, just add the chakra and imagine the clones and the number of them you want. A basic clone jutsu for a genin generally only needs 3 clones to be satisfactory for mastery. But again, take your time, it takes most much longer to master then it took you to learn the transformation technique." His clones would speak at the same time as him, before dispersing.

With our eyes wide open
We'll fight 'til we're broken
We rise and fall

Rune had listened to Shikarama and successfully done the jutsu. When he was told to speak, he did. "Yo~" He vocalized in Shikarama's voice. Afterwards, he was told to try it a few more times to get it down. That's exactly what he did. He'd stop the jutsu and turn back into Shikarama, checking himself(?) out to look for imperfections. He had just turned back in his teacher patted his head. Man he likes doing that, Rune thought with a genuine smile. "Plans?" Rune was surprised at what Shikarama had asked. He wasn't used to so much attention or so many questions. His parents and peers were never like this. Perhaps Hidden Rain ninja were just unattached to the village. "Um... I know I'll be leaving soon, but I don't know where," Rune mumbled, rubbing the back of his head subconsciously. His teacher's next suggestion was music to his ears. "I'd love to go with you, wherever you go."

Rune hung on to every word Shikarama spoke. He was impressed with how intelligent the teacher was. He was even more impressed when the Nara created ten clones. Suddenly, it's not so surprising that this man is a jounin, Rune thought as he gaped at the display of power. To create ten clones would take practice, and Shikarama made it look effortless. It also sounded awesome when eleven of him spoke in harmony. It wasn't until they dispersed that Rune closed his mouth. He nodded at his teacher- he could do this.

Rune practiced the seals in his hands. They were getting easier to use and the shape of them felt nice; it felt like he was possessing great power. Great power was what the seals could bring. The thought of just one creating ten clones amazed him. Legendary ninja would probably only need one to do something ground-breaking. Possibly literally. Could he create an earthquake with one seal some day? Rune realized he was mindlessly thinking. Nevertheless, his hands had been mindlessly forming the seals. They felt familiar to him and he let himself summon his chakra. He imagined another version of himself standing by him and air whistled past him. He looked to find two of himself, though they were pure white in color. "Uh?" Rune had no explanation for the clones. How did that happen? Was he focusing too much on the number and not on the details?

Still holding on to a feeling of confidence, he formed the seals again after dispersing the clones. He focused on the details of himself. The air pushed past him again and he opened his eyes to find an identical version of himself, down to the hairs on his head. Rune walked around his clone, studying for mistakes. He didn't see one. Rune looked at his teacher for comments or critique, but didn't manage to hide the look of disappointment on his face from only creating one.

Shikarama Nara, The Dedicated Genius

Shikarama nodded in approval to the voice and allowed him to continue going at it, watching carefully with each transformation, raising a thumbs up with each success. He would lightly point out any minor defects and allow Rune to correct them. Soon enough, the boy had completed it before they moved to that rather important piece of business. The boy thought about Shikarama's question before he said he would indeed be leaving the village, though he had no destination.
At Shikarama's offer, the Boy lit up with excitement. He smiled "Perfect...Once we are ready to go, we will leave as soon as we can. I'll give you a few lessons, then you can go and get your things together. We can be off as soon as you are ready." With that he would go back to teaching. He gave the explanation as the Fuka watched intently. The boys mouth was agape as he saw the ten clones. In truth, Shikarama could easily turn ten into a hundred illusionary clones. It was a simple task for one who had mastered both the art and their chakra. In Shikarama's eyes, it was only a matter of time before Rune could perform such a feat. Rune began practicing with excitement. His memorizing of the hand seals was quicker this time, already indicating progress. With a puff of smoke, the jutsu had been initiated. Unfortunately, while he managed to form two clones, they were like unpainted statues, versions of him set in white.
He grinned, holding back a laugh. "You can already form two, but you need to focus on the details, just start with making one perfect clone and move from there." He watched the boy as he went again, and made a perfect clone, in both form and color. "You did good, now lets see it move and talk. Once we know it is truly perfect, you can move on to trying to make more then one of equal quality. Just keep at it, and you will master it." He assured the boy while watching and waiting.

"It has to move and talk?" Rune groaned aloud. Complaining was his best skill and he was showing it off. "That's so much work," he muttered under his breath. He used his chakra to make the clone take a wobbly step towards Shikarama. It shook without balance for a second before sloppily recovering. Rune clutched his fists anxiously, hoping it would be good enough for the moment. He tried to coax the clone into speaking, but all that came out was a pathetic cough. "Ugh," Rune groaned again. He needed to imagine the clone sounding and moving like him. He felt like he would get a headache very soon. After some concentration, the clone did a quick jump of the ground and walked in a circle. Rune smiled and tried to convince it to talk. All that came out was another cough. "Speak dammit!" He cursed at the clone, losing patience from looking at himself fail, literally. The clone mimicked his words, "Speak dammit!" Rune's initial response was, "Don't copy me!" Rune watched as the clone repeated his last sentence, getting irritated at how sassy his clone was even though it lacked a sassy expression.

Rune took a deep breath. He formed the seals and made another clone. This one looked perfectly fine. "Can I get rid of them now?" As Rune spoke, his clones did too. How was he making them copy him without consciously telling them to? Perhaps his clones didn't follow instructions... The thought irked Rune.

Shikarama Nara, The Dedicated Genius

Shikarama watched Rune go to work, trying to get the clone to move and talk. He smiled encouragingly, seeing him finally get it to move with some effort. Getting it to talk, however, seemed more difficult to the Fuka. But it left Shikarama laughing as the clone began to mimic the boy.
"You got it going..." Shikarama told him. "Keep it up, try and make another." He made a second clone and did perfectly well in this one. Rune would ask Shikarama, along with his clones. Shikarama shook his head lightly. "You are making real progress. First make a third one, and make certain they all work well. Once you do that, we can move onto the substitution. You almost have this technique down. Once you get the hang of it, I assure you it will only get easier and more natural to you." He would allow the boy to try this all out, and repeat it a few times if need be. Once he was certain Rune had tried it enough, Shikarama would nod for them to move on, letting him disperse the clones. "Alright, this next one, as I've said is one of the most important. The substitution technique combines two effects. The first effect is using your chakra to produce extreme speed for a matter of moments, grab an object from the environment, and move it to where you were, while getting to a safe point, or one where you can attack by surprise. The second effect is to leave an illusion around the area you left the object you switched places with to make it look like you were struck. It can save one's life quite readily, and leave the opponent open to attack. However, in any fight it can only be used a limited number of times, often only once. It's not a get out of Jail free card, as you can substitute if you've been bound or trapped with no way out. These are the hand seals here." He gave the boy a display of each of them.
"Of course, given the nature of the technique, you'll eventually be able to use it without even forming a single seal, which will be necessary when you are in a real battle situation, as your opponents will be able to predict your actions otherwise." He then grabbed a rock from the ground, looking to Rune confidently. "Now, I am going to attack you. You'll need to use your hand seals and use your chakra. Then you'll need to produce the illusion while taking a three point path. First you will move from your position to an object, then from there back to your position, placing the object there, then you will move to a third area of your choice, either to hide, escape, or prepare a sneak attack." With that, after giving rune a chance to get familiar with the seals, he would toss the rock at the speed of a normal person, enough that the boy would have time to think and react.

"Three? Ugh." Rune groaned again, his two clones speaking with him in unison. "Stop it," Rune growled at them and they mirrored him. Rune contemplated hitting himself so they'd disperse themselves, but he decided against it. He formed the handseals, surprised that the clones didn't mimic him this time. He created another clone with ease. He could feel that the amount of chakra in his body was less, but not to the point of needing to rest. He briefly thought about how much chakra was in Shikarama's body.

Once he checked out the three clones and saw that they were up to par, Shikarama began another lesson. He mentally noted every word his teacher said. Clearly this jutsu was also important. How could he be so stupid and skip it? He should have just learned them all. As the Nara made the seals, Rune mimicked him slowly, feeling the strange formations. He perked up at hearing that this jutsu could be done without any seals at all. When his teacher picked up a rock, Rune felt a little anxious. He's gonna kill me with a rock. Great. His teacher explained that he would attack, but Rune didn't feel any better about it. Rune saw his teacher giving a chance to practice the seals, so he did it mindlessly. In his head, he was planning out his move. Rune was prepared with Shikarama threw the rock at him.

Rune formed the seals quickly and didn't slip up. Then he forced chakra to his feet to run up the tree, snatching a leaf. He kicked off the three to stand at the position he was at when his teacher through the rock. He forced his chakra outward, forming the quick illusion. Then he forced chakra to his feet one more time, running back to the tree and managing to hide in one of the higher branches, mostly out of sight. The rock collided with the leaf (illusion Rune) and the illusion erupted so the leaf was easy to see.

Shikarama Nara, The Dedicated Genius

Shikarama would clap his hands gently as the Rune completed his mastery of the clone jutsu. After explaining the substitution technique and giving the Fuka some time to prepare, he had thrown the rock, his senses following Ruka's actions carefully. Despite Ruka's doubts, he still managed to perform a successful substitution. Of course, it was hardly perfect, as was expected of a genin. While fast, his movements could be read by Shikarama. Against another genin, Rune would be able to completely outmaneuver them with this technique. However, again it could only be used once, or at most a few times in any altercation. It had to be saved for a dangerous occasion. Shikarama smiled, turning right to where Rune and hidden and giving him a thumbs up moments after the rock hit the leaf.
"You did well, Rune. And judging by the jutsu you've already mastered and your previous performance, this next one should be a piece of cake." He assured the Fuka. "We just need to make sure you have the tree climbing technique down, so come down from there. This technique is actually the first technique taught to complete chakra control. Of course, by already learning the water-walking techinque, you've surpassed it in chakra control. So, I may have to give you a slightly backwards lesson. You know that the water walking technique requires you to gather chakra to your feet and emit it as a pushing force, that you have to adjust constantly as your weight shifts. Well, Tree climbing is the opposite in a way. While you gather charka to your feet and emit it, you form it into a controlled layer held to your feet. It acts as a controlling adhesive, pulling you to the surface, holding you against gravity and allowing you to walk and move normally when inverted. Rather then adjusting your chakra, you need only emit a controlled, steady amount. If you emit too little, you won't stick to the tree. If you emit too much, the chakra would escape the layer and become a pushing force, ejecting you from the tree and breaking the bark. As I said, it should be quite easy for you to master. You may need to use a single hand seal to help you focus your chakra at first."

"Piece of cake, right." Rune nodded as Shikarama spoke, but was already ready to do the jutsu. He jumped from the tree, landing softly. He stared at the tree as he thoughtlessly nodded through Shikarama's words. He wasn't paying attention. He could do this without another lesson. His teacher had barely stopped speaking when the Fuka started running back to the tree. He got three steps up before his speed slowed considerably- he hadn't used chakra at all. He started to fall and forced chakra to his feet. He did it to quickly and too much and pushed himself off the tree. He landed flat on his back.

Uttering a curse, the ninja got up again. He forced chakra to his feet and hit the tree step after step. He got two steps higher this time, but kept too much chakra on his feet and pushed himself off one more time. As he landed sloppily, he uttered a "don't," to his teacher, signalling that he didn't want to hear about his mistake. He backed up before getting a great start to jump on the tree. He jumped onto the tree instead of stepping up and forced a considerable amount of chakra to his feet. His feet stayed on the tree, but he wobbled when he went to take a step and had to bend forward and grab the tree to avoid falling. After a second, he straightened back up and tried walking again. It was similar to water walking in terms of focus, so that's what he did. It wasn't as serene as water, but the wind shifting through the leaves above calmed him. He walked up the tree at an agonizingly slow pace before reaching the place where there were too many branches. He turned and walked down the tree, just showing off at this point. He slipped on the bottom of the trunk and fell to his knees on the ground, but still held some dignity on the fact he did it. "What's next?"

Shikarama Nara, The Dedicated Genius

Shikarama crossed his arms and watched the boy, raising an eyebrow as he neglected to use any chakra at all the first time. He nearly feel, only to use chakra at the last minute to try and stick after the fact. However, it proved to be to much and actually sent him flying off the The boy spoke angrily to himself for his mistake, but tried again. Once more, he used too much chakra and caused the tree to repel him. The process left the bark damaged. Shikarama neglected to speak, as Rune told him not to. He would let the young Fuka keep at it. He would try once more, nearly falling again, but manged to stick to it, slowly, carefully walking up. Shikarama smiled to the boy silently, before lightly clapping his hands.
"Before we move on, let me say this. Congratulations, you have finished all of your training as an academy student as of now. By having learned all the basics, you'll have a head start against your peers. This next bit of training here will be our last until we are to leave. It is the basic skill of genjutsu resistance. I learned it back in the leaf village. It is called the genjutsu release. Genjutsu, as you know, works by an opponent directing their chakra to you to effect the nervous system, while altering your chakra flow. The genjutsu release technique allows one to break genjutsu effecting oneself and one's allies. It works by concentrting one your chakra flow, and trying to slow it down and stop it for only a moment, before altering the flow again. Doing this should dispell most genjutsu placed upon you. However you need sufficient chakra control to achieve this. Depending on how could you are with chakra control and how powerful the genjutsu placed on you is, as well as your experience, it could take a little while to break it this way. There are two other major ways to break a genjutsu if this fails you. The first, is to cause sharp or strong pain outside of the genjutsu. The second is to produce a strong sensory input on oneself, against a sense not being effected by the genjutsu, such as with exposing oneself to chili powder. In both cases, the shock of the sensation can snap one out of it. It should be noted, to use the genjutsu release technique, you often need to form a hand seal to focus your chakra like that. One last caveat, some genjutsu are very powerful, such that most normal forms of escape won't work for a person's level of control, and some can physically bind a person, and keep them from using these previous methods. In such cases, your only option may be to endure it and wait for an ally to help you break it." He scratched his head after that moutful, giving Rune some time to think about all of this.
"Now, I am going to perform a genjutsu on you, like before, and I want you to try and use the genjutsu release technique. If you are unable to succeed with that, try and break out through some other method." With that, he would form hand seals.Genjutsu: False Surroundings Technique The world around rune would shift, as suddenly he would find himself enveloped in a thick forest. It would be up to him to escape.

Rune Fuka

With our eyes wide open
We'll fight 'til we're broken
We rise and fall

Rune enjoyed his teacher's praise. Rune was now ahead of his peers. Good. Shikarama then went on to explain the genjutsu release. That was a key jutsu, alright. He could learn that, right? Confidence drained out of the Fuka as Shikarama talked about using a genjutsu. Before Rune could get an objection in, the world around him faded. Had the genjutsu started? "Shikarama? Shikarama!" Rune called, wondering if his eyes were playing tricks and the genjutsu hadn't yet started.

Fear crept up from Rune's stomach and clawed at his heart. He was surrounded by a thick forest. There was no reason for such to exist. He must have been placed under the genjutsu. What did his teacher say? Change the flow of chakra. Right? "Or does doing that force me under the genjutsu more?" Rune silently cursed himself for not paying attention. "Time to play it safe," Rune muttered. If he couldn't tell which way to alter his chakra, he could always knock himself out. Rune targeted a nearby tree. He ran into the tree, bent over and head-first. He groaned loudly at the collision and backed up slowly, cuddling his head. "Not fun..." He groaned again. He turned around in a circle- slowly because of the concussion, but didn't see his teacher. He wasn't liking this genjutsu very much.

"Alter the flow it is," he said to no one in particular. He forced chakra to his hands and formed the needed seal. His chakra flared for a second before freezing altogether. Rune felt a spike of anxiety shank his chest. He felt like he was going to die, but the chakra reverted to its original flow before the genjutsu. Slowly, the forest faded away and Rune sat down, clutching his chest. It was beating extra hard with the near-death experience and all. Had he stopped his chakra too much? It felt like his life had stopped before his life and he'd be stuck there forever.

Shikarama finally appeared to Rune. "Let's leave," he said with a cracking voice, getting up slowly. "That wasn't fun at all."

Shikarama Nara, The Dedicated Genius

Rune seemed to panic as he was placed under genjutsu, and though he called out, Shikarama didn't answer, wanting him to try and figure his way out on his own. The boy ran around for a moment, hitting nothing, but falling back in pain, and effect of the illusion on his perceptions no doubt. Shikarama had made a non-threatening forest to avoid panicking him like before, but this seemed to no help much. then, Rune finally remembered a little bit of what Shikarama said, and began trying to stop and alter the flow of his chakra. It took quite a bit of effort out of the child, but soon enough, he escaped it, and now falling to the ground, he was ready to leave. "Looks like you managed to get through it, none the less." Shikarama kneeled, helping him up. "Now, go get anything you'll need. I'll be waiting for you at the village gates by the docks. Once you arrive, we will head out together." With that, Shikarama turned to leave, heading to the gates as he said. He would wait at the gates for the Fuka boy, and once he arrived, Shikarama would leave with him to the docks, and step onto the boat with him. He gave him a reassuring smile as they would be taken from the village hidden in the rain, off to who knows where.

Rune watched Shikarama head to the docks. Did he have anything he needed to get? No. Everything he needed was on him. He didn't want to return home and say goodbye. His parents were probably just going to chew him out. He followed Shikarama, ready for what would soon come.
