This is definitely a great french horn story.
Okey, so everyone knows what festival is. If you don't, find out.
So we were about to leave on the buses for festival. We have . . . I think it is maybe six or seven (double) french horns in all. Me and my friend both have one we're allowed to keep at home, and then we play different ones in school. So that makes five at school. One has a key unstringed, and hasn't been fixed yet. So that's four working ones.
There are three french horns in 7th grade and then two in 8th. The 7th graders left about an hour before we did, and took three of the four horns. So my friend had one, and I didn't. I was freaking. out.
When we got there, I thought I was going to be in so much trouble. I (while hyperventilating) told my band director what happened, (he was hosting the event so he wasn't at school that day) and he said we could probably borrow one from another school. I got to borrow a band director from another school's personal. professional. beautiful. french horn!!! I could not believe it. It was so wonderful. I played on it and we got all superiors. The End!

That WAS an awesome horn story!
Okay, so my french horn's lead pipe is really quite thin, so I don't have a problem using my air right or hitting the high notes. However, my band director's horn has more than twice the bore than mine does. He let me play it once, and he played mine. Mine's actually a relatively small horn, and his exact words were, "Oh, it's like a shiny new toy!" Much to my suprise, when I played his French Horn, I ran out of air no more than three measures into the song (where as I'm used to being able to go ten measures without taking a breath). He only let me play it for a little bit because it was old and had once belonged to the first woman to be in the phil harmonics or something.
Oh, and just another note...but I got a gold rating at ISSMA state!!! YAY1 mrgreen

i started on flute from 5th to middle of 8th then switched to clarinet.im playing clarinet next year for concert band and mellophone for marching band.my BD always said that woodwinds make awesome switches to brass.everytime he has to tell me to push the air or i forget it.one day he didnt want to deal with the class so he took me in the music room to practice and he was cramming stuff into my head like fingerings and pushing the air and looser or tighter lips dont roll your lower lip out and so forth...i walked out with bright red lips and they were tingling from playing...it is so worth it though!our marching band had 2 mello's so i wanted to up the count!no thats not the reason i started playing it though i just love to learn new instruments!

tohru_kyoko hey, i'm just now in 8th grade and want some tips or advice about marching and the mello...can anybody help me??? First of all, mellophone is one of the most fun instruments to play in marching band (I think it is, anyway). The sound carries extremely well in the fall air. The mellophone is pretty heavy--it's not a baritone or a sousaphone or anything, but it's harder to carry than a clarinet--so prepare for it by doing a few pushups everyday. Another thing is to really focus on your marching technique once you learn, because if you march well, you'll be able to play well. Use lots of air support, but conserve it too; there's a delicate balance. Mellophone is also the most impossible instrument to tune, and the tone sucks compared to that of a French Horn. Make sure you sound in tune with your section, because if you're in tune, you sound louder. The biggest piece of advice I have: remember to have fun. Marching band involves a lot of hard work, but it's so rewarding in the end. I live for marching band because I love it so much.

I want to start a horn guild. It would be the most awesomest guild in the world, right? But I have no money. Until then though... lol. But keep that in mind. I will create it. Unless someone else does first crying yeah. My daily input. lol.

I'm switching from trumpet to mellophone next year. Luckily for me, the section leader is graduating, so I get to be section leader since the other mello players will be upcoming 8th graders 8D

You're lucky, Caesia, because when I did it, it was at last minute, and I ended up under a sophomore section leader as a senior. She's kinda irresponsible and distracted...so I acted as section leader.

My school is getting a turf field and i can't wait. Also I'm getting a job soon so i'm gonna buy my own double french horn. I might sell my single. I love my horn. It's so fun to play. If only my school had more horn players. We have three, me, a girl who usually plays saxophone, and a girl who doesn't take it seriously and doens't know what she's doing.

Everyone used to tell me that the French horn would be too hard for me...I showed them. Two years later, I'm the band teacher's star horn player.
