Raesha was born when I discovered the Avariel. Winged elves? What could be cooler than that?! Just one thing. A winged Drow. But then the problem of why a Drow and Avariel would ever mate came up. I decided the only reason would be rape. Thus Raesha was born. From there it was no longer creating a character, it was just getting to know her. Once she existed, I had to learn to feel her and find out what she was like, what her motives, thoughts and instincts were. I don't think, "Hey, Raesha would look cool with a knife, let's give her a couple!" I think, "What would Raesha use? How would she have gotten it? Why would she have it? How would she wield it?" Every single bit of her clothing has a story behind it. Not a thing she owns or wears was picked just becuase it looked cool. Somewhere in my mind Raesha exists and I just have to look to her and discover who she already is. Of course, this makes my book really slow going as I have to wait for her to tell me her story, I can't just make things up as I go along. whee ;;
My other characters, on the other hand are not quite so special as Raesha. Neila was my first original character ever. She was developed for a story-driven text rp. I had a big thing for Drow at the time (having just read Drizzt's story), but of course I wouldn't play a typical Drow. She became a vunerable, desperate for love character who abandoned her life and family to seek happiness. Dash in a few flaws, a sexy outfit, and weapons, and you're ready to play. ^_^; Neila is special to me because she was my first and is beautiful. Also, I'm a total hopeless romantic so her deperate-to-be-loved bit really gets me.
Adwen came about when I decided Neila needed to actually find that love she sought. Ahh, but who would be able to love a Drow? Someone who himself is hated for reasons he can't control--a halfbreed. But why would Neila ever trust this man? But of course! he just lost his wife and is in mourning, he definitely wouldn't take advantage of her. From there is was just more asking myself questions and fleshing him out much like I did for Raesha.
Mara came about through a slightly different path....her chakram. I've always loved giant chakram. Adore Sun Shang Xiang from Dynasty Warriors because that's what she weilds. Decided one day that I must have a character that uses them. So she was done kinda backwards....not discovering a character, but making one to fit an item. xp Her existance fleshed out some more of Adwen's past though and provided a side story for thier novel (which is going even slower than Tattered Wings xd ;; ).
I guess my stories are progressing so slowely because I don't write them...they just come to me in bits through vivid images in my head. What I actually do have written so far is much more like a screen play than a novel. Maybe I should be a director instead... xd ;;;
EDIT: First pictures ever of Raesha--> http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Raesha/Raesha/black and white/raesha_tonyscott2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Raesha/Raesha/Color/raesha_tonyscott.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Raesha/Raesha/raesha_suzy4-recolor.jpg
Most accurate (recent pic)--> http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/Raesha/Raesha/raesha_reapersun.jpg
You'll notice that even after 4 years of commissioning, her look has changed almost none. :3

Mekania I've been designing clothing out of bath towels since I was little >>; because I always had time inbetween getting out of the tub and waiting for my mom to dry my hair (back then..not now) so I folded them into different sorts of dresses. OMG me too ;_; Weird. Maybe. Anyway, um. I'll make a superawesome post in response to Audley's question soonish.

Audley I'm sure this question has been asked before somewhere in this guild, but my short investigation hasn't led to too much ... Anyway, I'm curious about character design, in particular where people get their ideas for the clothing/weapons/accessories etc. their OCs wear/carry. I know some people have avatar-influenced OCs, but since I've looked through the galleries of members I've wondered where the rest of it comes from. Anyone who would oblige me with this information is marvellous, of course (; I've just seen a lot of your characters around here and dA and am very curious. well, as for weapons, I LOVE designing weapons...especially swords and scythes, sometimse staffs....but I usually overdecorate them^^;... some of my older weapon designs: http://www.deviantart.com/view/13600344/http://www.deviantart.com/view/13572249/http://www.deviantart.com/view/13572202/as for the characters itself...well, till my 17th birthday, Yumeh was a really lonely loner xD xD....nobody to talk to, and I've spent all of my afternoons at home, in my room....had to find something to occupy myself with^^;...

I think if you gave the heart a bit of color, but not fully colored it in, it would be really cool. Like a few lines or highlights, and then the drop that is coming off the bottom. Coloring the whole thing might conflict with the colors of the ropes around it, but giving it a bit of color along some of the lines would look neat, I think.

Mekania: I appreciate you sharing your bath towel secret with us - I'll have to keep it in mind next time I hop out of the shower (; It's definitely not something I've heard or seen or even imagined before, but it's such a good story (:
Yes, she does, ah, get around, as it were (; It's good, though - whenever I see her turn up on my watch list it directs me to someone else who might be taking commissions (; Gaia gold I don't have copious amounts of, but real life commissions I can cover, so it's good to have peopel to take queues from (; Anyway, Mekania is such a gorgeous character - it's very interesting to see where some of her came from (:
Raesha: I've never seen an avariel cross like yours before - actually, now that I think of it, I don't think I've seen an avariel/drow ever ... I could be living in the Dark Ages, of course, but it's a completely new idea to me (:
It's good how you've chosen Raesha's possessions out of necessity rather than cool - although I think characters for the sake of cool are all right, too, especially if they really do look cool (; How long have you had Raesha's story with you, anyway? I know novel writing can be a rather long process ... Do you have much written yet? Or just a lot of little scenes? Or ... anything? (:
LittleDream: Great weapon design (: Do the ideas for the designs come before the background story, or vice versa? I noticed on the last image the description said it belonged to an archangel ...

Audley LittleDream: Great weapon design (: Do the ideas for the designs come before the background story, or vice versa? I noticed on the last image the description said it belonged to an archangel ... well, I'm pretty strange here, because I never could think out any story/idea/anything for a character I didn't know how he looked...so I first sit and draw the character with all the clothes/weapons/etc he could have, and then I think who he might be^^;...one of the main points of this is because for me colors are VERY strongly attached to the personality of a character...for example purple is always lonely, but wants to be with people, while dark grey/black is a loner who wants to be alone....blue has a sad secret in his past, green is very wild, and yellow a bit girlish..and so on, and so on...and that's why I hate it when people change clothes of my characters, because every tiny bit of the clothing has something to do with the personality...yup I'm strange xDDD

Hehe. My chars are my novel chars, that's why I'm really like *shrug* when it comes to clothing and weapon detail and all. Of course, they're all just combinations of fancharacters who warped and developed their own universe over the past eight/nine years. XD
you know, i didn't know what an avariel is until I met Raesha.

Audley--Actually written in manuscript form? Pretty much none. xd ;; I have an outline for the whole book and a 'screenplay' for the first chapter. The rest is in lots of random bits and notes, or images in my head. whee ;; How long? Well, she came into existance about 4 years ago, but I never just sit down and write so I certainly couldn't say I've been working on her story for 4 years. xp
Neila and Adwen's story is even less concrete. xd ;;; I have the main plotline, one subplot (Mara's) and several very vivid scenes, but not a lot else. sweatdrop
I have a 5 year goal to publish a short story about Raesha, and a ten year goal to have Tattered Wings half written (in manuscript form). Neila and Adwen's story will come some time after Tattered Wings is published as they exist in the same world but in a later timeline.

 My characters Midnite and Star are multi-purposed. They represent my friend and I... big play off of our personalities and looks with the light vs. dark theme... and really, I think that's a really fun theme to work with. We can use the characters in strange and funny modern settings or having to do with anime or Midnite's taking it on herself to write a novel around them which she hopes to eventually publish. So the fantasy setting and the concept of them as Dream Weavers is also really fun... I don't create OCs too often. Usually the characters I draw are either fanart or a one-time deal. I created characters for a manga project I'll be working on but they're fairy normal in characteristics so I don't know how much I'd collect art for them. ^^

LittleDream: I don't know about strange, but I wouldn't say it was usual in my experience (; How did you come up with the meanings for the colours? I always associated purple with royalty ... although I'm sure I read that/saw it somewhere.
WoefulInfinity: I have to say I really love your character with the mark on his right cheek - is it a scar or a tattoo or ... something else? I probably should have included scars/tattoos/other in my question, because that's a curious part of character design, too ...
Raesha: Good luck (: Having a plan worked out helps, though - I've never written with one (except for paid jobs), so a novel I started two years ago is only nearing finishing point now. I just never made time for it or had a goal in mind for when it should finish - bad move, hence the shedload of wasted time and no finished novel.
How far ahead in the timeline are Neila and Adwen, anyway? Raesha looks so much more primal than Neila ... although that could be a class thing - I suppose I should read your character biographies first (;
Star: I actually knew all about your characters' influences - I've read a few of your threads with those details in them before (; They're great characters, though - facial markings always draw me in, especially stars (:
