Watched most of New Frontier. Had some distractions, but from what I got to see I enjoyed it. I've read the book, but it's been a while. There's some much going on in the book that of course they had to trim quite a bit. Still, I really got a kick out of it.

I also got the version with the JLU episodes, and since I haven't had cable in years this was my first look. The Ellis episode was nice, although there was a few times I knew what Ray was going to say before he said it. The others were OK.

Review of the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon:

I like it! The designs look like the swiped a couple rules from Bryan Lee O'Mally, which is fine with me. The designs are cute and the animation is smooth. The action is really well done, and when they've got Spidey webbing through the city they get through a lot of really good tricks.
The characterizations are really good, especially the high school students. Flash is a sufficient creep, Gwen doesn't get enough screen time but it's only two episodes. There's no MJ, woohoo! Peter gets appropriately angsty for appropriate reasons, Spider-man is appropriately a d**k. JJJ is perfect and I like Harry a lot.
I really like their Eddie Brock too. He's a Pete's friend, Conner's lab assistant and he's a bundle of fun.
Some of the dialogue gets a little cheezy. There's a scene where Vulture is ripping through Osborn's limo, trying to get at him, screaming, "YOU! WILL! APOLOGIZE!" to which Osborn scream back, "NEVER!"
The plots are good, a little predictable but I think it's because I've seen most every other incarnation of the Spidey cartoons they've tried. This is loads better than the MTv version, and I can't vouch for the 90s one because it's been so long. The animation is better, I can say that.
So it's been two episodes and I give it thumbs up. It's cute, it's fun, it's engaging, you like the characters.

Pros:

- Really good designs for the characters.
- Good characterizations.
- Good voice talent (I sear I hear Keith David out of the radio. )
- Minor continuity changes flow well and help the story.
- They're building little plot points for later episodes.
- Good villains.
- Unintentionally bad dialogue is hysterical and infrequent enough that you can enjoy it.

Cons:
- The Electro design isn't so hot. He looks like Scorpion without the tail.
- The theme song isn't very good. The animation for it with the newspaper is a little dull, and while the lyrics are ok, the "ahhhh ahhhh ahhhh ahhh" sounds bored. So do the closing "spectaculars." A theme song should be catchy and draw you in to watch the show. This is neither.
- Aunt May looks like a 20 year old with white hair and is the most weakly characterized, possibly because I think she's the weakest voice actress. She sounds a little bit like bipolar ADD. One minute she lecturing Peter and then in the same breath gives him pie.

I like it. The only thing I can find truly wrong with it is the theme song. *shudder*

So how bad IS The Batman? Evil aliens steal the Justice League's powers and put them in robots. They steal Hawkman's ability to fly, despite leaving him his wings. Then the League uses Batman's anti-League weapons to fight the RoboJusticeLeague. The anti-Hawkman weapon? A gun the shoots nets.

It is both one of the worst and most unintentionally hysterical cartoons available on television. This show has not improved, it's only become more unintentionally hilarious. The only redeaming quality the show has is that the animation is of fairly good quality and the voice acting does get better. But the stories, the dialogue, the characters....oh my.

Oh gods. Wonder Woman isn't even in it right?
PostPosted: Sat Mar 08, 2008 10:04 am

To date, they have batman, Superman, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, the Flash, Green Arrow, Robin and I've probably missed one. But the only lady that's graced the show is Batgirl, who has been relegated to the role of "Batman's spunky kid sister." And her costume has a skirt.
It's not one of the most female-positive cartoons out there, but then it feels very much as if the entire cast is made of twelve year old boys. Wonder Woman and company aren't on there because, as far as the heros are concerned, girls have cootees.

Show's over now. That was the last episode. Next season they're launching "The Brave and the Bold" to take it's place.

Oh God... Oh well.. At least it's over. I didn't like the animation so much in that. Bruce looked.. too pointy.

Oh yeah that spiderman Theme is terrible!
