A Room

Co-Post with Harmodious

Byrne murmurred slightly, rolling over in the tree limb as he tried to get more comfortable. To be sure...it had gotten much more crowded up here of late.

His Fob egg had hatched, now a tailed bit of fluff. And his two emice, one still an egg nestled against him as well. Buttercup whirred near his ear in contentment, and his fish lay near his stomache in their bowl.

When he moved, the bowl rocked, and tumbled from the tree even as his eyes snapped open. "oh no!"

He caught the bowl half into it's flight, getting splashed with a fourth of its water. Flattening his ears, his free hand pulled at the damp clothe clinging to his chest, harmodius held the bowl aloft towards the bright tail feathers that hung down from the boughs.

"You really should be more caustious with your fish, dear flame. And here'd I'd though to find you in a nest on a dais somewhere."

"Im sorry." he said, crestfallen even as his hands snaked forward eagerly to take the bowl back. Holding it above his head, he craned his neck and watched the fish within. "You okay in there?"

He frowned. "They could use a bigger bowl...but then I can't carry them with me. Beryl was going to think about that for a bit. Where have you been Harmodious? It's been a while since I saw you last."

He wiggled his toes. "I like the tree. But the nest is scratchy."

"The mortals sell tree hammocks and tree tents set up with crossbows. It works for scientists in the rainforests?"

"Mortals are funny." he answered. "Did you come to sleep here too?"

He chuckled, smilng, "No, I have a dais of my own to sleep upon. I came to check on you, as you observed, it has been some time. I would be grieved if you'd come to harm and none had been the wiser."

With one loft of his wings he was perched on a impossibly small branch near to Byrne's set up, but not intruding. The branch was not bent by any apparent weight.

"Harm?" he shook his head. "Just the god-killer, but he's gone now. Buttercup's too little to eat me, so it's fine now." Tilting his head he asked "Were you really worried?"

He crouched, wings pulled tight in to avoid disturbing the canopy. "Of course, Byrne. Precious rebirth, you are a close brother to me. You take what is old and tired and destroy it, and then give it new, young life. Destruction and creation. We are brothers. How could I not worry after you?"

The smile faded to an expression of a teacher explaining the proof of some logic puzzle.

He smiled sunnily, sparkling grin that wiggled in to all corners of his self. "Then it's allright then." He didn't catch the significance of the glance, lifting his eyebrows loftily. "Did you need me to do something for you?"

"Only just that, for now. Seeing you happy." He looked around the tree, "Though perhaps I should ask that you try to find a lodging more suited to protecting your menagerie. Your poor fish were not meant for arborial dwelling, I'm afraid. "

"hm." Byrne considered. "I guess." Hopping out of the tree, he fell only slightly before the wind caught him and he balanced there, mice, fish, and fridge. "But is there going to be a tree there anyway? I'd like to sit there, even if I have to sleep on the floor."

He puzzled, then jumped down. "There? In your new dwelling? I don't know, you haven't picked one out, so I couldn't tell you if what you want has a tree or not."

One ear was cocked up and the other down, much like his brows.

"Then can I pick one?" he asked. "Or can you?" The idea of a new place to explore suddenly had him interested. He wondered if there would be things that "lurked" there as well. That would make sleeping hard though...unless he had a tree.

He blinked, and laughed, "Yes, Byrne, yes you may pick any dwelling you like. I shall fashion a place for you that you mTrees, fish ponds, great sprawling fronds, tree frogs, miniature blenders...anything you wish to form your habitat will for for you there to explore."

He frowned suddenly. "Im not really sure what I want." he thought for a few moments. "Um...can I tell you in a bit? I'd like to think about it." he looked up. "You're not mad, are you?"

Stranger and stranger the day waned. He shook his head, furrowing his brow lightly in bewilderment, "No, byrne, I am not angry. You may reach your space through the gardens, there will be a brass wrought gate there that is fashioned in teh image of yourself rising from brimstone. When you have decided, you may fashion the space by will. It will be there waiting for as long as you need."

"Allright." he answered. And then threw his arms around the other in a hug. Fish, water, mice and all. "You'll come visit, right?"

He startled, wings jerking up at the hug.

His lips parted in grin again at the youth's question, "Of course, little flame. "

Koi in a Tree

Co-post with Beryl

With the slight warming trend in the weather Beryl found herself outside and in the garden again. The landscape was steadily becoming greener and the flowers were blooming in rotation. Lovely.

Dangling a fish was HARD when you were up in a tree. Didn't the fish know that it would be difficult the way they were made? Yeesh. His feet kicked idly from the highest of branches when he saw Beryl below.

"Hiiiiiii Beryl!" he called, "oops!" snatching at the fishbowl which had suddenly tried to levitate as he waved, he scolded it.

Looking up Beryl smiled adn laughed a bit. With a few flaps of her wings she was level with him, helping to keep the poor koi's bowl from tipping over. "Hello Byrne. Careful there, I don't think koi are really made for tree-climbing."

"I don't know why not." he answered, slightly exasperated with the fish. "They should have wings too, and not need to be in water all the time. It has to be uncomfortable. I hate water." scowling at the liquid, although not the fish in them, he contemplated their plight.

"Well, water to him is warm air to you. Vital and feels lovely. I'll see if I can't find an easier way for you to tote your friend around though. Sound fair?

"That works, I guess." he said doubtfully. Water warm? How? It was slimy and WET. "I dunno about your funny ideas though sometimes..."

hopping off the branch, he used his wings to glide down and skidded to the ground. Although graceful, he managed to also make it look rather adventurous. And he was careful not to splosh the bowl about. He didn't want to get wet. "What are you doing?"

Beryl followed, alighting next to him. "Just enjoying the return of growth is all. I love flowers and seeing them bloom makes me happy. Something simple, but very nice for me. And you?"

"I dunno." he shrugged. "I just wanted to be outside and high up. Buttercup was inside, so I thought sparky would like to come up with me." indicating the bowl he flipped his wings in another shrug.

"Sparky? That's a cute and fitting name." Getting a small spark of her own she reached over and gently mused the feathers at the bases of his wings.

He squealed a little, feathers trembling. "That tickles!" he accused, nearly dropping the bowl at the suddeness of the sensation.

Now that was a noise. Laughing she gently took the bowl from him and set it on a nearby bench. "Does it?"

With a laugh she went for his wings again, gently ticking the feathers around the wing bases. Too few here would indulge in such a childish and mortal game. Their loss.

"Yes!" he laughed, turning quickly and swiping at her own wings. "Try it yourself!"

She gave a slightly startled yelp before disolving in giggles. "Thou art a cruel god!"

Still laughing she managed to bring her wingtips up to his bare belly, tickling him while he tickled her.

He twitched, his smaller body avoiding the attack although having to pull away to do so. "You're silly today." he said "why?"

"Because I have been somber and sad long enough and I am determined to smile today!"

Grinning she launched herself at Byrne, gently tackling him, fingers dancing over his sides.

He wrestled free again and laughed, shaking his wings out. VERY silly. "Maybe you need a fish to tickle." he offered, pointing to the bowl.

"I have one thank you. Not quite as amusing as a young firegod though." She laughed and launched at him again. It felt so good to behave so juvenile for a bit.

Posted: Sun May 01, 2005 6:52 pm

He was quicker this time, avoiding her grasping fingers with a snicker. "You're pretty quick." he allowed. "But Buttercup is too."

She seemed to be laughing alot, and he supposed that was good. It seemed odd that she was the one being so engrossed in play while he less so.

She had half expected him to dodge the attack, but was prepared. When he made note of the act she brought the tip of her tail up to tickle his back.

1-1 Byrne settling down to think
PostPosted: Wed Jul 20, 2005 8:45 pm

Thinking is HARD

Co-post with Beryl

Byrne had still not budged from his previous position. There was...by now...a fine layer of dust that lay about him, and a bird was building a nest upon his head. Not that he minded that fact...he was fairly oblivious to it. He was, in fact, still staring at the doors to his room and trying to think what to put in there.

Or rather, that was what he was TRYING to start doing. What his mind was actually doing was quite something else.
Case in point:

Okay...I need to think about my room...oh hey, it's echoing in here. This is neat! Hello? wow! I can hear it!
He would thence be playing in the caverns of his mind for quite sometime before venturing back out to the task at hand.

Clothed, clean and looking a bit better beryl wandered from her rooms. And was promptly distracted by a small firey figure.

"Hello Byrne, penny for your thoughts?" Her voice was soft and warm and her hand rested gently on his shoulder.

He looked up, nearly dislodged the bird's nest, and promptly wondered why there was a nest there to begin with. Blinking at that sudden thought, he forgot for a moment that Beryl was there, and looked upwards and crosseyed, the motion sending a small dust cloud aloft. He sneezed, and the bird's nest did dislodge, plopping in his lap, empty.

"oh." he said, blinking. "I have a bird's nest in my lap, Beryl."

"Yes you do. We can save that if you'd like. I think it would make a rather nice ornament in your spaces. How are you?"

She knelt beside him, carefully straightening and ridding his hair of a bit of dust. A small, sweet child. That's what he'd forever be. Beryl was almost envious.

"Sure!" he said, rather interested. Excited really. He had a decoration for a room that wasn't there yet! How cool was that?

"Those are my doors." he indicated them proudly. Then thought for a second. Oh, that was right. "Harmodious made them for me."

He looked up again, wondering if anything else would dislodge, squirming slightly under the patting that freed his feathery locks from their dust. "How are you?"

"Have you made anything behind that lovely portal yet?" Smiling a bit she called a soft breeze to dislodge the rest of the offending dustbunnies from his hair and feathers.

"Honestly, very tired and more than a bit confused, but I'll be alright. You?"

Aha. That brought back to mind his current dilemma, and he threatened to fall back into a contemplative pitfall. Eyes zeroed back in on the doors and he thought carefully.

No. Nothing decided yet. He didn't think so, at least...and it was still echoey inside.

That thought amused him again as he crawled about the caverns in his mind playing a bit again with the sound.

Laughing agan she gently boofed him on the head with her wing. "Hello? I think that maybe if you make a few details we can get your spaces set up, since your expression is telling me you haven't."

Still smiling she pulled a small notebook from her pocket as well as a pen. "You ready?"

Byrne started, sneezed again, this time at the lack of dust and looked up. His eyes brightened considerably. "Oh! Hello Beryl! How are you today!"

She laughed and shook her head. "Hello again Byrne, and I have already answered those questions. Would you like some help fixing up your rooms?" Oh boy, this conversation could repeat all day. And then some.

"Oh!" he said with a slight exclamation. "I don't know what to do." he answered. "I've been sitting and thinking. But thinking's sort of hard, so I haven't really figured it out yet. But the doors are sure pretty, aren't they? Harmodious made them for me." he said the last quite proudly.

"Yes, they're lovely. Hmm, would you like to have a nest in there? All big and just for you? The best branches and satin and silk all through it? From there the rest should come easy." Oh yeah, all day convo, right here.

"A nest?" he answered brightly. "Oh wow! That sounds wonderful!" Nests and trees and ....

"Hm." he frowned. "Fridges?" I don't think Buttercup would like it so high up..."

"Well, what if we had the nest just a bit above the ground? And make a ground level space for your koi and Buttercup? There could also be a large golden circle in one corner full of ashes for when you want to burn for a while. And the place for your koi can be set into the wall so no water splashes out on you. You'd just have to open the lid and give the little thing food. Sound good?"

He brightened again. "That sounds fun!" he answered. "But...do you think that the fish might have more room? To splash about more?"

Of course. We can have a little ond set right into your wall. It can splash and swim all it wants without getting water on you. I'm sure when it sees you with food it'll calm down so you can feed it. You want it to be gold rimed or have a warm colored wood? Both would look lovely. And your nest can rest above head-height as is only proper." She was smiling, making little diagrams as he got excited, trying to make a drawing for him so he could see it to make it.

He peeked over her shoulder and gave a little peep of happiness

She smiled, laughing a bit at the peep. Finishing the sketches and making little notes she handed the diagram to him. "There, that help you at all? You can take this around to the others if you're still not certain."

"Oh wow!" he answered. "What a good idea!" he took the pages carefully, looking about for a place to put them. "Uhm..."

She couldn't help but laugh again. "Wait here just a moment. I have something for you." She got up, vanishing into her rooms for a moment. She was grinning. "Ok, you should know this. Close your eyes and put out your hands."

"Huh?" he replied. "oh." Closing his eyes, he tried hard not to peek. His one eue squinched open quickly before he closed it again with a slight laugh.

Grin on her face she put the gift in his hands and sat back down. The bag was small, made of crimson satin with a pheonix embroidered on it in black silk thread.

"Go ahead and open your eyes. Do you like it?"

"Do I!" he replied happily, slinging it over his head. Then he fingered it happily. "What is it?"

"Just a little bag for you to keep things in. There's a notebook and pen in there just for you. Now you don't have to worry about loosing little things." She was glad he liked it so much.

He grinned beamingly. "And...if I lose this?" he looked rather troubled by the thought.

You can keep if comrotably around you waist as a belt pouch with the strap being the belt. I don't think you'll loose it." She smiled, patting some of his hair back and sraightening his plume.

He took it from around his neck, and fiddled with it about his waist. "Hm. Like this?" he felt a bit silly with it hanging there.

Chuckling to herself she helped him get it in place. "There. That actually looks quite dashing with the satin catching the reflection of your skin. There's a mirror if you want to look." She pointed at the end of the hall. Now it looked proper, as though he were a divine messenger with his little pack on his hip.

Instead of looking, he hugged Beryl around the neck. "Thank you Beryl."

She gave a small, startled meep of surprise. After a moment though she returned the hug. "You're very welcome, Byrne. I'm glad I could make you feel so happy." It felt nice to get a hug, especially from Byrne. She'd never really get over how innocent he was. Or how warm.

"You're a kind soul and I love seeing you smile. It's like a small present in itself."

A Change in perspective

Co-post with Ea

He had ascertained that a change of perspective might be needed. He changed his own by simply standing on his head and staring at the doors still. They certainly looked different that way...

The Hunt trudged towards the main building, chewing thoughtfully on a rabbit. He really needed to talk to Beryl, and hopefully she would be in. He pushed through the front door, nodding to the firery god standing on his head.

"Byrne."

Halfway up the stairs, the oddness hit him, and he returned to the main room.

"Byrne... what are you doing?"

Byrne wiggled his toes in approximation of a hello. He was still rather miffed at Ea for some reason or other that he couldn't remember at the time, but he also couldn't remember he WAS rather miffed, so his greeting was as friendly as a pair of toes could be.

"My 'possum Flynn can hang upside down from a tree." he told Ea wisely. "I can't though. But Im trying to make my room. I thought maybe Flynn would have some ideas so Im standing on my head."

"Oh. Of course."

He had never quite figured out how to deal with Byrne, not being a people person for the most part and generally being confused by the other god on principle. Still, Ea remembered him as being amusing, and that made him worth trying to figure out.

"I think opossums do it by using their tail, though."

He nodded in a fashion he considered knowing. "Yes. A nice long one!" He wiggled his tail wistfully. "no feathers though. Mine's not long enough." He let himself tumble to the ground in a heap and straightened into a lotus position. "Beryl was trying to help too. But she didn't have to stand on her head."

"That's nice of her. What did she do?"

While he talked, the Hunt looked at the ceiling of the room thoughtfully. It was a pity there were no rafters - at least them they could've hung from their legs.
"Oh!" he fumbled at his neck and pulled the sketches from them. "She said all sorts of things, like nests and water where my fish could splash about and said my doors are nice!" he beamed. "Do you like them? Harmodious made them for me!" he pointed to the bronze edifices.

Eamnonn nodded in agreement, knowing few had his complete devotion to living surroundings. "They're lovely."

He glanced at the sketches, liking Beryl's ideas. "Actually, if you need help with any natural decor, I could probably lend a hand. My room is a full glade with grass, trees, and spring fed bathing pool."

He looked intrigued. "She wanted to put my fish in the wall." he noted wisely. "I want them to have room to play, but not so I can get wet." He pointed to the sketch, upside down as it was. "she said the nest would be high, but not so high that Buttercup wouldn't like it. I like it high, though." he frowned at the dilemma. He didn't want his fridge falling and getting hurt. "I like grasses and trees. Big trees. big, big ones."

He nodded, not really understanding what the other god was talking about, but too amused to care.

"Well, if you put them in the fish in the wall, all across the wall, they'd have plenty of room to play and you wouldn't get wet. Especially if you grew a big tree in the center of the room, and you lived in a nest at the top and... Buttercup had her own level a little further down where it was safe for her."

He looked flabbergasted and delighted at the same time. "You mean more than one nest?" He liked that idea. He liked it alot.

"But if the fish are in the wall, won't they fall out?" he frowned. "Water can't stand on its head, you know."

Eamnonn smiled and pointed at the windows.

"Those are made of glass, which is like very hard water. You can see through it, and it's very thin but strong. Humans use it to make all sorts of things, especially places for fish to live. If you make a hole in your wall that doesn't go all the way through, and put a box made out glass in the hole, you can fill it with water and gravel and plants and fish. They'll be happy, and have lots of space, and you can see them through the side of the box that faces the room."

"Glass." he repeated "glaaaaass" he tasted the word a bit. "Sounds like a sheep."

It didn't look like one though. Perhaps a distant cousin race. Could one make clothing from it?

Getting up, he padded to where Ea pointed and tapped on it for a few moments, considering. "hm."

He would have to think on that, as hard as thinking was. Glass.

"What tree is big?" he asked, turning back to Ea. "with lots of nests in it."

The Hunt considered this, trying to think of the best type of tree to recommend.

"Do you want a tree with leaves or a tree with pinecones?"

"Yes." Byrne answered without hesitation.

Eamnonn chuckled. "Right, a magical tree it is then. Mix a beech tree, a maple tree, and Douglass fir tree. That's what you want."

He wrote that down, or tried to. The words looked rather scary once they were connected letter by letter. But he beamed at them anyway, and they beamed back at him.

Jumping up, he hugged Eamnonn, ire forgotten. "Thank you!"

The Hunt tensed for a moment, instincts telling him to defend himself before he realized was getting hugged. Oh, okay. He hugged Byrne back gently.

"Sure thing. Do you want me to talk to Harmodious about the tree for you? I bet he could make it."

Hm. "MMmh." he repeated aloud. "Could you?" he looked at the beaming letters and didn't remember that they actually should have made words. Instead they just...beamed. "I bet he could!"

He was sure that by now, he was quite simply getting bored. Staring at these papers had ceased to have meaning to him. He was tempted to merely go back out to his tree and stay there. A room had seemed a neat idea at the onset, now it just seemed like a headache.

He...wasn't good at important things.

Sniffling quietly, sprawled out as a cat with his wings unfurled, he stared morosely at the door as if asking it mutely to tell him what should be beyond it.

Annoyingly, the door failed to respond.

She watched him silently taking in the scribbling on the papers scattered around them. It was like he just couldn't quite see what it was he wanted. Her teeth tugged on her lip a moment, her eyes narrowing as he continued to stare at the door for some reason.

"Byrne, what's wrong?" she asked, wondering if he'd forgotten she was there already. "Can I help with something?"

He started, qings flaring a bit as he turned his head.

"Oh, hi." he said. "You were the lady with my mop, weren't you? How is it doing?" He wiggled his toes, but it was a rather forlorn motion now.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 06, 2005 8:06 pm

She giggled as she watched him. She could easily see that he'd not made these although there were several notes scrawled here and there that looked as if maybe he'd tried to adjust things small portions in some way that only he understood.

"I left your mop in the kitchen. Didn't you get it back? I was sure you would find it there." Pointing to the papers, she said, "Is something wrong with your plans? Don't you like them?"

"oh." he replied. "No, I didn't. I thought you took it with you. Poor mop, it must be lonely all by itself down there." he rolled over on his stomache. "Im trying to make a room. Only I don't know what I should make it."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 06, 2005 8:30 pm

"Your mop will still be there waiting for you. Maybe you can find a place in your room for it, too." she smiled. "After all it helped defend you against that thing that tried to eat all of you."

"Hmm..." she tilted her head slightly looking over the papers and then back at him. "This is a little confusing. It must be why you keep frowning."

Glancing up at the doors, she studied them for a minute. "Maybe you just need to see what is there already. Sometimes when you look at the actual things there, it will give you an idea of what to change. You'll know when you look at something if you like it or not, won't you?"

Smiling, she shrugged slightly. "I forget things like this even if I draw plans and just decide by looking at it what I like and what I don't like. It's easier for me. It might be for you."

"Harmodious made it empty." Byrne offered. "I have to fill it. But these papers are what it should look like. But Im not sure how it will work. It's important, so I don't want to do it wrong."

He frowned. "I always hate important things."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 06, 2005 8:48 pm

"I understand that." she said softly. "I forget too many important things sometimes. I get distracted."

Pursing her lips she stared at the door. Then she turned back to him. "I don't think there's a wrong way, Byrne. It's your room and so long as you like it, that's what counts, isn't it? And if you have room for things like your mop and your pets, then it should work alright. You can always change it later if you see something you don't like, can't you?"

"I don't know if I can." he said "I don't think the magic resets itself. I think once it's done, it's there for good. I want to make sure it's right, that way."

He sighed. "But I don't think it's right." he fretted.
