"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" Hibon went zooming past, as fast as his own two feet could carry him, screaming at the top of his lungs. Never before had the youth ran harder.. well maybe just that one tim--- "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" Nahara's own yell came through just as loud, as she came upon the heels of her brother, just going on pure impulse really. Why--?! Why is this thing after us?!

"AH---!!" Hibon lost his footing, as the ground rumbled unexpectedly, causing him to lose his balance, and stumble right into Nahara, the both of them bowling over. Winters burst forth from the ground, directly in front of them, the ichor oozing out and flailing widly in all directions. "WHOA!---GYAA!---AH!!"

Hibon's arms flailed out, as Winters came in close, his mask glaring at them both. "...Why do you run...!!"

"WA-WA...WAIT WAIT!!!" hibon shouted out, crossing both his arms against one another. "Let's go fight in the city! Where there are lots of guards around! Ok!?"

Winters didn't seem to be in the mood to fool around, as he launched several tentacles towards Hibon and Nahara, his entire cool demeanor lost since his defeat by the combo attack of Vahn & Sun. "Hurry and get your friends! The Fire Bringer and Lizard!!!"

W-What...? Nahara stared at Winters with wide confusement... she knew Vahn was supposedly this 'Fire-Bringer'... but.. who was the li-- the ground suddenly exploded outwards, as she wa syanked backwards by her brother out of harm's way. "GAHK!"

Damn! Damn! Damn! Hibon cursed again and again, as he began running once more, despite the pain and exhaustion he was in, making a bee line for Strata. Why do bad things always happen to me!! Hibon swerved largely to the left, as he ran with Nahara upon his back, barely avoiding a volley of spearing tentacles. Even if Vahn was here... what could he do against this monster?!

Nahara stared behind her, at the advancing Winters, her eyes fixated in morbid fascination. What is that thing!? I haven't seen a monster like that before!! Is that really a monster...!?

~~

SUN?! Vahn was brought out of stupor, when splotches of blood hit his face, and he found himself staring at the torn wings of his companion. It seemed the surprise registered well with even the young man, who seemed to actually t'sk.

"W-Wait... Sunstrike..." Vahn reached out with a hand, but found himself actually shaking-- he'd never seen Sun act so... defensive?

"You must be the other one I heard about. Right... your supposed to come along well, although I really couldn't care less about you." that same stupid grin across the young man's face, as he simply shook the pain from having his hand struck off like it was nothing.

"How do you know what he's like? Do you really know him at all? Or maybe you just wanted to get to know the inside of his pants?" The young man grinned, as he began to finger the mask that now rested across his shoulder.

Sunstrike's grin was just as feral as the other mans was sly. His fingers began to itch like crazy, and the bandages smoldered.

"Forget it. If I didn't go with the last masked twit, hell if I'm going to go with you either...two faced idiot. Why are you so afraid to show what you really are, eh?

He wasn't going to rise to the bait of this...creature.

"I know enough about him to know he's not anything like you. Why should I have to worry about anything else?" Sunstrike shrugged in distain.

"You're all words and nonsense. Better left to your fancy and fiction. Lets go home Vahn...time is wasted here." His words were light, but his eyes were heavy with anger and suspicion. He quickly took in the movement of the other man, but it wouldn't be long before that sight was gone. It was growing dark...he was at a disadvantage here....

"Never mind."

Winters voice flowed out like thick mollases, his temper showing through as the mask that chose to be dominant now, was one of pure rage. "I'm bored."

"!!!" Hibon looked up as the large mass of ichor was brought to bear down upon him and Nahara.

"I was going to wait for you to call the Fire Bringer and the Lizard to rescue you but..." Winters slammed the mass of spread out ichor against Hibon, who took the brunt of the damage, shielding his own sister with his body.

".....Gack...!"

"....If you don't wanna call them, that's fine. I'll just grind your bones into dust anyway." Winters began manipulating the ichor, forcing it to group together, this time in the form of a very large hand, slamming it forward.

...Damn! My legs won't move...sorry...sis Hibon closed his eyes tightly, waiting for death to claim him, but found himself hearing the loud crash as the ichor collided not with flesh and bone, but a crackling field of pure energy, which was shielding him and his sister.

"!!!" Hibon, Nahara, and Winters all shared the same face of pure shock and surprise. Hibon stared up towards the apex of the shield, watching as a simple charm seemed to be emenating such an impressive amount of defensive energy.

"Tha...That's..." Nahara stared out, eyeing the charm, as realization settled.

"Ohohohohohoho... I told you." The familiar laughter echoed out, as a tall figure made his way forward. "This was going to be quite a trip. To be on guard always."

Hibon and Nahara stared on, in pure amazement, if their jaws could drop and hit the floor, it would have happened.

"...Mr. Devil, sorry but the Fire-Bringer isn't home right now. If you'd like..." Standing right next to Hibon and Nahara, a hand going over a clean shaven face that held only a fair amount of stubbles, and with a loose tunica that barely hid the apparently rippling muscles of his tanned body, stood Dain, certainly not looking like an old man at all. "Want to play with me?"

And he bore the biggest grin of them all.

~~

"S-Sunstrike, wait!" Vahn reached out, his hand grasping onto the red-head's shoulder, squeezing. Too much...this is too much... "This guy... he... I..." How the hell... do I explain... where do I begin?!

"Now, now... let's not fight." The young man continued smiling, staring directly towards Sun.

"!!!" Suddenly whatever tension ahd been building up, was just as easily sliced away, as beads of sweat began to fall from Vahn's temples, the same with the young man. It's said that strong enough fighters.. focused enough.. are able to sense the presence of equally strong fighters... like a sixth sense.

As it was, something huge just spiked on the 'power' meter.

"....Wha...What the..? This power is..." The young man was speaking mostly to himself, as he all but forgot about Sunstrike and Vahn.

"And this other powerful feeling...Is it that masked guy from before...?" Vahn said, yellowed eyes glancing to Sunstrike.

He just noticed Winters? Is this guy feeling ok? The young man thought to himself, as he stared at Vahn. ...But this other feeling... I don't know him...Who is it?

A sharp scratching sound brought the young man out of his thoughts, as he saw Vahn dragging the Fang behind him, as he was already leaving apparently.

"Huh!?" The young man looked offended, and insulted, as he yelled out towards the retreating fighter. "Wait Vahn where do you think you're going!? I haven't finished talking to you yet!!"

"Later!!!" Vahn said waving, as he was already grabbing Sun's hand and pulling him to follow.

"I told you I'm not done yet!!!"

"Who cares about what you have to say!" Vahn shot back, annoyance in his voice. "I don't know what kind of orginization 'Murmillions' is-- but I'm not interested in joining!"

The young man stared towards Vahn, not approving of this answer verbally, but you could se eit in his eyes.

"I am a human!" Vahn exclaimed, pressing his left hand to his chest. "I'm different from your kind!"

Just as quickly as Sun had changed into one aspect, he changed back, yelping in surprise as he was almost pulled off his feet by Vahn, his wings cracking and snapping shut.

"V-Vahn?! Wait, I..." He threw a glance back towards the strange man, catching the dissappointment in his expression even though the sun had nearly sunk under the horizon. There was more to this....

But for now he was just trying to keep his footing as Vahn half dragged him and the sword in the direction of the power shift, finally able to gather himself enough to be able to move along with Vahn without the aid of a hand.

He didn't really understand what was going on here, not quite able to sense the same things that Vahn obviously could. But if it could wrench his friend out of that psuedo-hipnotic state that the other man had placed on him, then Sun was all for going to find out what was happening.

"...Who..are you...?" Winters couldn't beleive what he was seeing, as the the energy that reppelled his ichor away burned hot and black, before vanishing completely. Hibon and Nahara continued staring towards their 'grandfather', with wide eyes.

"Oh, sorry - sorry." Dain continued smiling, as he rested a hand against the back of his neck. "I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Dain... Dain Fah."

~~

Vahn's greaved feet pounded against the ground, his eyes dead set ahead, as all he could think about was getting there in time. I have to see... with my own eyes. My own damn eyes!
PostPosted: Sun Jul 31, 2005 8:36 pm

"Vahn, what the hell is..."

Sunstrike stopped speaking as he began to recognize the surroundings in the growing darkness of night. They were still headed toward the city but.... it was a bit off course, heading diagonally towards Strata instead of in a direct route.

Once he thought about it, he realized that this direction, comming FROM the city, would interlock paths with the ruins that he and the two kids had investigated the other day. Low and behold the dark mass drifted by as they ran.

A gust of wind blew by, as Dain stood before Winters and both his grandchildren, arms calmly folded across his chest. Yellowed eyes stared out, as his smoothed over raven hair gleamed in the dark.

"Fah...I see... You're Vahn Fah's..."

"I'm his uncle." Came the simple reply, not wanting any misunderstandings to go around, as he bent down, picking up the charm from the floor. "Hey. Hold onto this Hibon." Dain tossed the charm towards Hibon, who allb ut cupped his hands together. "I made this for you in the first place."

Who... is this...guy? Hibon stared out with wide eyes, not sure if this was a dream, or just a big joke. However it was Nahara who piped up next. "Wh...When did you..." she swallowed, composing herslef more better so she wouldn't have to stutter her question out. "How long have you been... his uncle?"

Dain simply smiled down at her. "...Since the beginning."

"Wha..."

"Ever since the day he was born, of course." Dain responded, still grinning, as he ran a hair through his stubble, looking pretty bored. "Didn't you ever notice... I never had any pictures of my fmaily around? they hadn't invented cameras back then you know."

"That..makes sense I guess." Hibon said sarcastically, before a loud crashing sounded out causing Dain to revert his attention back to Winters.

"I see.... If the uncle is a direct descendant, then Vahn is a true blood. No wonder I was inferior to him and that lizard." Winters brought the mass of writhing tentacles up, the glemaing eyes from his mask glowing visibly. "But Dain, I have no interest in you." Winters poined his finger towards the aged man. "The reason I came here tonight is to kill Vahn and his companion. If you're his uncle then you should know where he is. Where is Vahn Fah?"

Dain cracked his head to the side, scratching at his neck now. "How should I know? He's not exactly a kid anymore. I barely recognized him as it is myself when he came back. Besides, I'm not very protective of my own kids."

"Don't lie...you're way too attached to us." Hibon said, waving a hand about.

"You and Nahara are different! You're in a different cattegory! Out of Vahn's league!" Dain exclaimed, waving his own hand right back at Hibon. "But--" Dain clapped both his hands together once. "--Even if you're not interested in me, I'm here to kill you. I can't just have you ignore an old man like me. Weren't you ever told to respect your elders?"

"HEH." The mass of ichor that made up Winters body began to violently bubble and writhe, as he snarled a menancing smile down upon Dain. "Heh, heh. You came to kill me!? How dare a mere human talk to me like that!!" Winters raged on, as the ichor began to expand and bubble outwards.

"Don't tell me... that you think I'm just a normal monster!!" The darkness that made up his ichor seemed to implode, before expanding outwards, stretching and stretching as it built itself a new frame. "LOOK... THIS IS....MY TRUE....STRENGTH!!"

Winters grew in size and stature to a total of 14'5" before Dain's very eyes. Both of his personalities' masks were present as they actually formed seperate heads for each other. The two heads shared a single body, the body resembling a sleek black two headed troll. He retained his liquid properties and looked as menancing as ever, as he towered over Dain. Each head controlled a single arm, as seperate portions of ichor began to form on each arm.

Winters soon drew forth two weapons from his own huge body, one for each hand. One he called his son, and the other he called his wife. His son appeared to be a huge meat cleaver, Smile’s side wielded this weapon. The other weapon was a clawed gauntlet, he calls this his wife, Frown’s side wielded this weapon. His son, being a extremely large and heavy weapon can crush through most any shield or barrier that is not spiritual in nature. His wife took advantage of his liquid properties, enabaling him to send his clawed fingers out like razor sharp tentacles to whip and shred at his victims.

"H...How can this be!?" Nahara said, her eyes tearing, as she backed into Hibon. "He's as big as a demon...Maybe even bigger!"

"Demons... you say? Don't compare me to that. I am--"

"'Broken Masks'." Dain intterupted, finishing Winters' sentence. "A group of demons who try to fuse with humans, in order to gain more power. Am I right?" Dain asked, smiling broadly.

"...Oh. So you've heard of us? Then..." Winters hunched over, as all the ichor about his body began bristling, the cleaver and clawed gauntlet both slamming down into the ground. "You should know you can't defeat me."

"A-A... fight... with him?! But he's too big..." hibon stared up at Winters, before looking back to Dain.

"EXACTLY!! The size of my body represents the amount of power flowing through me! with your puny little frame-- there is no way that you can defeat me!! you little punk!" Winters snarled out, as both his heads stared at Dain.

"...Is that so?" Dain offered simply, as he ran a hand along his chin. "Then let's test you out!"

Both heads began roaring with laughter, as the arms lifted up off the ground now. "...It looks like you are a fool, who does not know logic. ...Very well..."

Winters' opened both of his mouths, the gaping maws stretching to insane proportions. It wasn't long before his dual heads began to resemble two gate ways, his tongues rolling out like draw bridges before Dain. Out of his maws began to pour out massive quantities of the black ichor, even as Dain made his move.

It was merely a blur of movement... and if you blinked, you literally missed it.

"Let me...teach you the basics." Dain said softly, his eyes staring straight ahead. "Everyone learns to control their power, otherwise... everyone would be walking around with limbs the size of tree trunks, and biceps as thick as steel. Like yours."

Dain straightened up, blowing the smoke off his right fist, a few contrials of black flame still there. "Remember that you can never judge the strength of an opponent by their size."

Dain was standing directly behind Winters, whose entire chest had a hole and cavity the size of a crator, the impact from Dain's fist apparently, and already the monster's entire body was dissolving, both masked heads cracked and fading away, leaving a very astonished Hibon, Nahara-- and newly arrived Vahn and Sun to stare at the scene that was apaprently wrapping up.

"You should have at least known that much before you challenged me, kid."
PostPosted: Sun Jul 31, 2005 10:07 pm

"Whoa....he's a bit more like you, Vahn...lets stay on his side..." Sun said it without thinking, stunned at the display of power from Dain. I hope I'm that powerful if I ever get that old, was the wistful thought. He nearly choked, wait?! I'm twice that old....T.T ah woe is me...a weakling at my a-

He shook his head and looked to his companion.

"What should we do now?" The three were standing down the ridge, talking softly among themselves, Sunstrike couldn't really pick up what they were saying.

A soft sigh escaped his lips, as he reached into the back pocket of his jeans, sliding out a slim, cell phone. Flipping it open, he hit a single number, letting the auto-redial kick in since he didn't feel like actually punching in the whole number.

"Helloooo---- This is Laffite. Is this Claire's cellphone?" Still standing there, on nothing but air, the young man stretched out, as a voice on the other end spoke. "Sorry, I messed up..." Yelling could be heard from the other end now, as Laffite pulled the phone away from his ear, lest he go deaf. "Stop yelling at me, geez! ...It's only a matter of time anyway."

Laffite smiled softly, as he started walking away. "Let's be patient."

~~

"No...." Winters body was still dissolving away, leaving just one of the heads slightly intact, even as the mask was burning away into nothing. Utter disbelief was registered in the monster's voice, as he slowly died. "NO WAY!!!!"

And he was gone. Dain remained where he stood, his back to both Hibon and Nahara, who simply really did not know what the hell to say right now. They'd certainly never seen this side of their grandfather before... "A...All that...in a single freakin' attack?!" Hibon felt his hands still shaking... even after all he'd gone through... just to get stronger.. he was still.. scared?

Insane...he's insanely strong!! Nahara's eyes remained widened; she was in the same boat as her brother. Is there anyway...he could be our grandfather?!

"Soooo, how did it go?" Dain said, as he started walking bakc towards Hibon and Nahara, staring past the both of them. Curious as to who he was talkign to, Hibon turned his head... only to find both Vahn and Sunstrike not too far from them. "The retrieval of your sword..."

"So you are him... Eidolon...!!" Vahn continued staring wide-eyed at the man known as Dain.. the man who'd helped him to fight a war over fifty years ago.. a man who was as lost to time as he was. A mn who should have been DEAD.

"Long time no see, eh? ...Son."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 01, 2005 9:45 am

Sunstrike nearly fell over.

"It was....a heckuva chore, but we managed it!" Sunstrike looked mournfully at Dain, treating him no differently, though Vahn still seemed to be in shock. Truthfully Sun wasn't any better off when it came to surprise at the sudden meeting of someone that so closely resembled his friend, albeit a little older...

But when Sunstrike was surprised or out of touch in a situation, he talked. Which always made it easier. He grinned and waved tiredly at Nahara and Hibon, even as the other two men greeted one another, wondering why the two teenagers were out here facing monsters in the first place.

Both Sunstrike and Vahn probably looked a bit worse for wear, covered in dust and blood from the small journey, not to mention tired.

"Well, well-- that's quite the relief. I'm glad to know you haven't become rusty at all! I am very relieved." Dain said softly, as Vahn started sliding down the short incline leading towards the three.

"The hell? Don't give me weird compliments!" The fighter shouted back, his Fang long since sheathed away and held in his left hand. He was more than tired, and covered in grime-- he was annoyed as well.

"Ohohohohoho... I just don't want you to blame me for your decrease in ability. My medicinal applications always have nasty side-effects." Dain said, stroking his chin thoughtfully. It was odd, looking at Dain now, and comparing to him to the old, white haired man that had first greeted the two.

"Oh, now I get it." Vahn said disdainly, a hand resting along the back of his neck. "Anyway, forget about it. Even if my abilities have decreased, it wouldn't be your fault. That'd simply be the limit of my abilities."

"Even so... How is it?" Dain asked, as he approached Vahn and rested a hand on his shoulder. "Seeing a blood relative after so many long years..."

"Eh, it's okay." His eyes were sullen, and staring towards the ground mostly, as he honestly didn't know what to feel. He didn't ever think that the family line had ever been passed through other means... even if the blood was dilluted through the centuries.

"So now... how do you feel inside?" Dain's colored eyes seemed to deepen, as he regarded Vahn now.

"I'm okay." Vahn turned his head to the side, staring at Sunstrike for a bit. "I didn't... I didn't hate them as much as I said." Dain raised an eyebrow at Vahn. "The Lizard Clan, I mean." Turnign his gaze downwards now, as he stood staring at the ground, Vahn shifted uncomfortably. "If...there's anything that I've truly hated for fifty years without thinking twice..." Vahn lifted his head and looked to Dain.

"...It'd have to be the fact that I failed to save themon that night."

Sunstrike yawned, but kept his pace slower, comming down the ridge after Vahn, making sure that he and Dain could talk before interupting, the other reason was that he didn't want to trip on something unseen in the dark and fall nose over tail down the ridge. He'd had enough bad luck for one day.

Suddenly he muttered a soft curse as he realized that they must have packed away the goggles in one of the bags before comming. He hadn't expected that they'd get so close to the city so soon...he sighed, it'd probably be alright, it was night after all, and while his features were sharp, they wouldn't stand out any more then they would had he worn the goggles. He spoke up as he got closer.

"If he's saying he's okay, Dain, don't believe him! He needs rebandaging and stuff for something nasty that got lodged in his side. Other then that, I guess he was okay." Sunstrike looked away innocently, scratching the side of his nose and grinning. "And he's never allowed alchohol again, he's an awful tease when he's drunk..."

"Ohohohohoho..." Dain watched as Vahn attempted to get Susntrike in a chokehold, only to reopen his own wounds and go rolling onto the ground sputtering in pain, while Nahara and Hibon laughed. "Well seems like you two haven't changed after all... Just as I thought..." Dain rested both hands on his hips as he let out a hearty laugh. "You really are just like your brother."

"No, I'm not--!!" Vahn spoke up suddenly, as he pressed a hand tightly to his right side. However Dain seemed to let that pass as he turned his head to the side.

"Speaking of your brother...Have you noticed?" Both men exchanged baleful looks, making the others wonder just exactly what was up.

"...Yep. Just as you predicted...They came in contact with me." Vahn said, not liking how the whole meeting went, and the way Sunstrike had behaved concerned him as well.

"The 'Army of Masks'. A rogue group of Murmillions who use forbidden techniques...to gain the power of a Devil. No one has any idea where they are or what they're planning." Dain said, shaking the numbness out of his right hand.

"What a pain in the a**." Vahn said with a sigh, as he sat up.

"However...since they made contatc with you..." Dain began to say carefully.

"Heh...it must mean they're preparing for some kinda battle, huh?" Vahn finished for the old man, eyes closing in thought. "Just like us." His eyes opened as he stared at Sunstrike.

Sunstrike yelped in surprise at the sudden attack, and then winced as his friend opened the wound. He helped him up as the others laughed just shaking his head.

"And you call me an idiot..."Was the wry comment. Then he watched with the children as the conversation suddenly went above their heads.

"Whoa whoa, so your saying Winters was, ah..." Sunstrike scratched his head. They shouldn't have been able to get away with that...there would be some sort of cosmic repercutions that would have brou-...Sunstrike went pale. Nah nah, he wouldn't already be here...would he? Of course he was...Henry loved monitoring things like this...

"So basically you're saying that these people are messing with stuff beyond most humans...and they're ready to "flex their muscels" to put it lightly....that man did talk about sides..." The growl was low and menacing, and then Sunstrike shrugged it off. "They either want us to join...or to kill us...tell you the truth, I don't like those options much..." Sunstrike blinked. "Brother?"

Vahn lowered his head to the side. They had arrived at his brother. He kept his head turned away for the moment, hoping to defelct any invitation to join in this part of the conversation.

"Well.. I suppose that's one perspective of putting it in." Dain said sadly, scratching at the back of his neck, as he admittedly side stepped the issue of Vahn's brother for now. "Humans have always been fascinated with the occult... and dark side of things for as long as they've existed. I suppose it was only natural that eventually, they would begin turning into what they revered the most..." Dain waved a hand about dismissvely, knowing he would get into a whole speal.

"However, that's not the point here. The Murmillions have always had.. a less than noble part in history, as well as origin." Dain watched as Vahn simply remained quiet, and frowned a little deciding not to sidestep the issue any further. "And no doubt, You also noticed...the rapid change of your brother."

Vahn perked up at that, eyes narrowing. "So, that guy is really still alive... But you knew that much already, right?" Vahn's left fist visibly clentched tightly.. before abruptly loosening. "But...he was completely different, from when I saw him fifty years ago." Vahn closed his eyes as he recounted the last words his brother had spoken to everyone at the Stadium.

Don't be so arrogant,
Since the beginning
no one has ever
stood in the heavens

Neither you
Nor I

Or even God himself

But that emptiness in the throne of heaven will be filled

From this day forth

I will be the one to stand in the heavens.

"His power had suddenly changed completely. Even after remaining dormant... for so many years." Vahn looked up at Dain, eyes still narrowed intensely. "You know what I'm getting at, right? It's his doing."

"Deepwater." Dain knew that name wasn't a very common word to be tossed about, and it usually always meant something bad when it did occur. "I see... He might have contacted the 'Broken Mask' demon, and then somehow reated him into the thing that attacked us all today..."

"All by using the power of Ashe's spell." Vahn finished, anger rising in his chest.

Dain seemed to ignore the scowl on Vahn's face for now, as he went on. "The demon's abilities increased...but the thing was stillt oo impure. That demon must not have been completely finished yet." Dain's colored eyes regarded Sunstrike for a moment, as he mulled. "I fear it was simply an experimental version sent out... Just to gather data and test how well it could fight at that level."

"Even at that level though, the power of that spell is unbeleivable. He'll finish his research before we know it." Vahn scoffed, as his fist made a light imprint into the sanded rock. ""And then the finished forms of his 'Broken Masks' will appear, along with his personal army of devils...All in order to crush the world."

"So what will you do?" Dain stared down at Vahn curiously, even as the fighter began lifting himself up off the ground with a little help from Sunstrike.

"Eh, I'll do something." he responded half heartedely. "Either way, the way things are now... everyone we could possibly think of... is gonna do somethin'."
