TemariGirlDRUMMER
ok dude...
not ALL drummers are cocky. some of us have uberly high egos (which REALLY PISSES ME OFF) i think its just because not everyone is able to play our instrument the way we can so we just have an ego about it...(not saying i do...)
but if ur saying drums arent that hard to play...heh...ur wrong buddy. i play both set and percussion. and i plan on being in marching band in high school. we do have to keep tempo, and that's hard sometimes 'cause the whole band follows YOU. some follow the director and some follow YOU. and plus if you mess up everyone knows that YOU did it O_o if you're in a trombone or trumpets..etc...doesnt the director have to ask?
just saying. no offense to other instruments or anything, i'm just making a point.
and besides, i've seen HUGE egos, like for instance, at my old school we had a really cocky sax section, pissed everyone off, even the director. stare

Its pretty true, you have to be in time < its the only hard part for percussion and yeah it kinda sucks that the whole band is following the percussion for the beats and the timing . and not stuffing up especial if your on the solo bit

i'm not in percussion, but i totally respect the sticky people. like one time after guard practice they had us come in and listen to the band practicing for a while. and those people who have the drums that are like attatched to them in like a little row. (i'm so good with technical terms) were doing this part and it was like *hands become really fast blur* and i like how they sound...like last year in our show they're was a drum thing and it was supposed to sound like africany. and it did. sounded really cool.

and my guard instructor told me that one time, he had a guard with a deaf girl in it (he didn't know she was deaf) and she kept time by like the vibrations from the bass drum.

Yes some drummers may be cocky. I know a few, but most of us love what we do. In my case my section was only recognized as a part of the band my last year in high school which was this year. It took time but I had to get it through to our band director that we as a drumline try just as hard or even harder as the rest of the band and it's time you start treating us like it. Sadly we only had one snare, one quad (me), one bass, one cymbal, and one pit person. But even still we worked our asses off to make sure people knew who we were. It is very hard to make sure you hit every note while marching especially the dynamics. You mess up once and you can most likely tell.

drumming is not another thing to do in marching band not only does it keep the tempo it also is the pulse the blood and the heart of the marching band. We have lead offs, cadences, complicated patterns mr. Alto sax.

There is waaayyy more to playing drums than keeping Tempo...yes some percussionists are a bit Cocky but not all of them
and one reason is people like you that think it's just hitting an instrument and keeping tempo
drummers never get any respect from anyone else in the band
and it's rather annoying

Easy? WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?
OH MY GOD ARE YOU WRONG!
I'm doing bass drums this year and know what? We have a solo with only 32nd and 64th notes. And the tempo we are playing at is 86 split time. Meaning the tempo is 172 on the quarter note. Try playing 64th notes split between 4drums on at 172. And tell me honestly that that is easy!

i hope he knows that when it comes to parades, the percussion is the hardest working part of the band. The drums NEVER stop playing. Maybe if his arms felt like were going to fall, off from what he called "just keeping tempo", he'd have a better appreciation.

Oh, and he is completely ignoring the fact that there are cocky people in every section.

Drummers aren't cocky, and drumming isn't easy.

You probably say that drumming is simple because you probably played a song that's level 1.
Drumline plays at level 5 or higher if possible.
Whe you think drummer are so cocky, you have to look at it the other way around.
Believe it or not, but the percussion section has a higher reputation than any other section in the band. When Drum Majors give off a command, the Percussion Section has to respond louder than any other section. But that does not make them cocky.

By the way, try playing a snare drums part of the act, or try to play a drum break for that matter.

Confidence is key when you're a member of the drumline. As one of my instructors says, "if you wanna play good, you gotta act good. You could be completely wrong, but as long as you confidant, no one will care." I personally think the drumline is the most badass section in the whole marching band (brass in close second) and the feeling of walking onto the field with your drum on, knowing most of the attention is on you, well that would make anyone cocky. xd

And drums certainly ARE hard. You know why I hate parades? Cause the drumline never stops playing. After every parade, my hands, back and shoulders feel like they are about to explode.

We also have a huge responsibility of keeping the rest of the band in tempo. We haven't had a drum major for the past 2 years and so it's our just to do what a drum major would normally do. No pressure, right?

the thing i hate about some drummers is they act like they own the place and when they ask questions like why does no one give us props because maybe people are sick of them bragging about how great they are. i'll bet that a lot of drummers dont give any other instrument props! no offense to anyone but the drums are not the most important. nor the saxes, sousas, flutes, etc.

are you retarded?
marching drums is level if not harder than marching with an sax or flute or tuba.

Ever tried marching and playing with a FULL set of tenors [six drums]
i didnt think so, that crap sucks your almost dead by the end of the show.

So. yeah, lets not knock drummers, in our band we are the ones who work the hardest, and the most discipline. Thats why we are so cocky, plus If your a drummer, your hot. period.

I couldn't have said it better.
Oh yea, and drummers are sexy. ( I am a percussionist n.n and so is my Bf )

I agree with you that drums are not the most important instrument. However, I'm going to have to say that all instruments are equally important. And sometimes it matters what part in the show you are at. If you're at the ballad of course percussion is not most important.

Just because we don't give other instruments "props" does not mean that we are a bunch of whiney punks who don't give a s**t. I mean, what would we do without the other instruments? We would definitly not have a marching show.

We don't brag, by the way. We're just a bunch of show-offs. And you know what, if we're good percussionists it's totally alright.

So keep expecting the percussion to be a b***h to you, especially if you keep flaming, and bitching, right back at them.

That is all. :3 I heart the timpani.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that drummers are cocky... Set players, maybe (haha, I should know!), but I don't know any classical percussionists that have that sort of attitude.

In regards to your opinion on percussion being an 'easy' instrument, however...

As my conductor told me once, it is always easy to play an instrument. The hard part lies in mastering the instrument. For example, I could pick up a saxophone, flute, clarinet or any instrument out there, grab a fingering chart and blow into it. This would be playing it. But then there's learning techniques, practicing advanced rudiments, and developing musicality as well.

I'm quite tempted to say that after learning all of this, you would have mastered your instrument, but one can never truly 'master' music in that sense; there's always more to learn.

So the next time you call an instrument, whether it be strings, brass, winds or percussion, an 'easy' instrument, think about in what way you mean it.
