I played flute for about 7 years. My last 2 years I only played for marching band though. Then I got to do oboe for concert season. It was fun..

Miangel Is it Bugler's Holiday? We played that in middle school, and that was the first song that came to mind when you mentioned that. Cool trumpet part while the rest of us sit around and do nothing, pretty much. Yep, I do believe that's it. We had our polaroid scavenger hunt. I was on a team with seven flutes, two french horns, and an oboe. We ended up getting May's kids and his in-laws in one of our pictures. It was generally fun, but our camera broke while we were trying to get a picture of us crammed in a volkswagon beetle, so we were stuck there for five minutes. Then we were supposed to take of picture with a copy of "Home on the Range," but we ran into another group there. Incidently our first chair flute was in that group. She decided to hide it from us, and when someone from my group tried to stop her, she grabbed her and ended up pulling the girl's finger back and breaking her nail. Thank goodness they didn't win. We also got a picture with the mayor.

I play flute but we never get any slack...don't get no respect. They've voted almost every brass section section of the week twice, but we work really hard and have NEVER been voted section of the week.

That's 'cause no one likes flutes. Sorry. My director decided to tune every individual person in the band. Flutes came last and he said: "Forget it. It's hopeless." I wouldn't have been so offended if it were true, but we usually play pretty well in tune. Sure high, high B flat and C are out, but the middle range is good.
Wow, I thought I had it bad. I was reading our second oboe's part on Fugue in G minor (I think) and as far as I could tell, it was one big solo for first oboe. It was sad. Poor second C instruments.

My BD likes flutes, even though she gives us crap because she's a trumpet player. Well, I suppose I should be more specific. She likes flutes that actually practice and try to do well, like me. *nods* She's not largely pleased that there's 20 flutes this year, though....

My band director, he likes the people who try... so if you try and stuff, he likes you, I mean, he's such an awesome person in general, though he freaked out on the Freshmen percussionists (Well, obviously, who better to freak out on?) today. But he likes most of the flutes.
Update on my flute situation: Geoff's back. <333 I'm so happy. I was practicing for an hour just in happiness.

Not really about flutes, but still music related:
I was at rehersal for the fall play (which I might add is mostly made up of band kids) and three of the guys have to sing a chord. Y'know, the three stooges thing. "Hello"--root--"hello"--third--"hello"--fifth. Of coarse, the third guy sings it really off key. It's scary and sounds really bad. It took till today for the director to tell him to sing on key. It was funny. Anyway, back to the topic of flutes (for anyone who wants to talk about flutes.)

xd I'm a fluuuute! And I was reading the last few posts, and a bit surprised. The flute section at my school was loved by our band director, but not by most of the other sections (for the last two years, anyway; he doesn't like us anymore this year xd ). The flutes were basically his bitches. sweatdrop He's always make our section leaders run around and do stuff like put music away, go get a file he needed, etc etc. sweatdrop Before I came to the school, they'd gotten Best Section Of the Year Award three times in a row (I guess I must've jinxed it xp ).
whee I really like playing the flute, though. heart

Woo! Our first concert is tonight! blaugh And I get to play a piece with the choir. Hehe. The choir sucks apparently, but oh well. I'm the only one out of 20 flutes playing with the choir. I get to stand out! xd Which is difficult for a flute to do at my school, so I'm happy. ^^ I luff my BD for giving me the part.

Tonight was symphony! YAY!!! Anyway, there was this trumpet guy who took all the wind instruments (all six of us) for a sectional. He started by asking the flute, "What's the most difficult section on the page?" I said the e-natural, everyone else said the 16th notes. Then we played this section. I was the only one playing the 16th notes, and everybody else stopped playing. I love orchestra! The guy made us play the notes really slow, and only play the first and third notes, but at least he acknowleged us.
Speaking of band, WE HAVE A CONCERT IN SIX DAYS!!!!! Currently the only difference between symphonic and wind is the fact that wind plays harder music. We both sound the same. It sucks!

We had our first concert tonight! I soloed with the choir... I was SO terrified, because they made me go up on the stage where everyone could see me. AND they gave me a mic. But I did really well, at least, that's what everyone said. I was shaking SO bad... but I got through it and didn't slip up, so I was pleased. Afterwards my mom went up to my BD and was like, "Thank you for having Megan do the solo!" and my BD was like, "Well, the choir director told me he needed a flute player, and I was like, 'Oh, Megan.'" It's pretty good to know you stand out in a crowd of twenty flute players. ^^;;
