boco: d'oh, that's a pain in the a**.

>.< I have a project coming up, I'm planning on making a scallop hemmed skirt. The problem I'm having is this- How much gathering do you want at the waist so that the scallops will look right? Like, lay flat and actually look like scallops? =_=

That's really the only think keeping me from doing the project at this point. I don't wanna waste any fabric! D:

I talked to Cryrin about that recently, actually. She said most of the reason that they pinch up and make that "balloon" effect has to do with the lining. If you're not dead on with the measurements, it ends up being too tight at the bottom. I'd say go with the general rule of thumb with the hem being three times your waist measurement and just do a "rectangular" skirt with the scallops.

At least, that's what I'm going to try and do with the scallop-hemmed skirt I'm working on. I'll let you know how it turns out. ^^;

Someone else you might want to ask about it is Kaorte, I know she did a really cute scallop hem on a skirt a while back. She also can probably explain it better than I can. :3

Fabric for skirts I'm going to work on early this summer:

The rose and skull motif fabric are going to make the overskirt for a bustle-back set. The lace will attach at the hem with a ruffle underneath that. The underskirt will be black, but black is black is black, so I didn't see a reason to take a photo of the fabric I bought for the underskirt.

The polka dot fabric I'm a bit torn on, still. I have six yards, so I have plenty to play with. I'm torn between designing a skirt with lots of ruffles and eyelet lace and a JSK with the same. I'll have to do some sketches before I end up deciding, I guess. Either way, I want the skirt to have a separate panel in the front with pintucks and lace.

A skirt that isn't finished yet:

This skirt is a bit less fluffy than the last one in the same fabric. It's half-finished and in the process of having red grosgrain ribbon sewn around the hem. It's slow going since I'm doing it by hand--I'm afraid of my machine eating the ribbon or having it end up crooked along the hem--but it looks good so far!

@ spuntino: The skull skirt sounds really cute! I think it would also be neat to see that fabric used in the AaTP overskirt style! I can't find a picture of any of the AaTP skirts in that style, so I will have to use a F+F skirt as a reference: Here

@ Bellabe: Congradulations on feeling proud for finishing something! I would have to say, try making your edges a little more straight. It might be the angle, but it looks like the edges are uneven. Also, the lace is of a pretty bad quality. Its worth the extra dollar or two in the long run to buy a soft-to-the-touch, better quality lace.

AatP is one of my favorite brands, actually [sub-brand, whatever!]
The skirt that I started isn't quite done, though it's partially pieced together. I should have enough fabric left to make a skirt like one they had a while back. It had a high-waisted overskirt with suspenders and an asymmetrical, handkerchief hem over an underskirt.

If all goes well, I won't need to make an extra underskirt for it [since I'm makingone for the bustle skirt] and will be able to just make a second overskirt. (:

I remember that skirt. That will look awesome! Are you making the underskirt yourself?

And for my project begining thing, I am making a simple one piece using this OP tutorial on LJ. The bodice is going to look like this User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. in the end hopefully, but I am having a problem drafting the bodice pattern since I am 9 inches bigger in the bust than stockingshock. Can someone help me with what I should do or should I just make a partially shirred back?

The underskirt is already on my list of things to do. I'm just trying to find a suitable lace trim for it, since I want something small and discreet and not-tacky [which is hard to find in black unless you go online, which is my last resort].

For that particular bodice, I think you're going to have to change how it's done from the tutorial, unfortunately. It really seems to be designed more for girls with smaller figures, anyway. Even with shirring, you're likely to have some fitting issues that will result in discomfort. Instead of having your front panel be one, big chuck of cloth, make three. The two on the side will have "curves" to better fit your bust and the front panel will be extra-long. Do you grasp my meaning at all?

I can draw a diagram if necessary.

Also, are you doing an empire waisted dress, or one fitted to your natural waist? If the latter, the pattern for the bodice for the last dress that you completed may work, just raise the sides and add your embellishments. I'll take a closer look at that dress a bit later, though...I've gotta go make something to eat before I find out if I have work or not today.

The Hancock fabrics by me actually has some pretty nice laces, better than our JoAnns. If you have one by you, try there?

With the bodice I think I understand what you are trying to say. Pretty much, I should make the bodice curved over the boobs? I might do that but I had a problem with drafting patterns and I have no idea how I would pull that off. I actually thought that even though I'm bigger, the front would be fine since my boobs themselves aren't big. If I am completely off from what you are saying, which I might be, then feel free to draw a diagram.

I plan on making the bodice fitted to my natural waist with the skirt gathered but the pattern I used on my last dress isn't really anything like what I want. The pattern is actually Simplicity 4070 with an altered back (I added shirring and doubled the back plus some) and when you look at the pattern, you can see that it really wouldn't work for what I'm trying to get. Plus, I only have JSKs at the moment which is why I wanted to make an OP with sleeves.

my project: making a piece of lolita clothing gonk I'm new to Lolita so I haven't made anything.
oh my. I just realized. my petticoats are missing. they might be in my very messy closet.
Does anybody know if a light weight fabric would be good for anything. I have a lot of this light weight, REALLY PRETTY (white with black roses) and I really want to make something. Would a caplet be okay (does anyone have a pattern).

I'm planning to starting work on this pattern (A)by Saturday.
Any ideas to make it more loli-appropriate? I'm planning to use a plain black fabric... but I don't know if I should add anything to it.
