Hmm... you can try 'CA ni sun de imasu': I live in California, or 'CA de umare mashita': I was born in California.

The Japanese dont use the verb 'is' as loosely as we do =P They would either say 'I come from California' or 'I reside in California'

So it depends on whether you are still in California and just saying where you live, or you came from California to somewhere else (i.e. I'm from California but now I live in Oregon...or something like that)

If you mean that you live in California currently you would say "Watashi wa California ni sundeimasu"

If you mean literally that you came from California to wherever you are now, you would say "Watashi wa California kara kimashita"

Or, if you want to use 'desu' you can say "Watashi wa California-jin desu" which literally means 'I am a California-person'.

you also say California is your home-state by saying "Watashi no shusshin wa Karuforunia desu" (That's the katakana way of saying california)

And the "kara" thing is particule saying the point of origin of your sentence. However, it can't be used in a "noun sentence". Desu is used to give a straight fact : "This is that", "This ain't that"...

The correct way to form a sentence with the kara particule would be to say : "California kara kimashita" that would mean "I'm from California" but suggesting you are elsewhere.

Like it has been said, the correct form of saying "you're from California" would be the "I'm living in California" in japanese : "California ni sunde imasu"
