Promethei, Squire of Mercury

Alright, still irritated. Got it. Promethei kept pace next to Imhotep until he burst ahead of him to climb up the wall first, in a quick pursuit of Emain Ablach. Was he trying to beat him?

... The concept of Imhotep and Emain Ablach racing about anything might have made him laugh in a different light that wasn't still clouded by a mix of emotions in his gut he had trouble rifling through. Instead, he took a deep breath and waited for Imhotep to ascend the wall before he followed the same. It had been a while since he had wall-climbed to any meaningful extent, and by that he meant, ah,

... long enough.

But he made it up there quickly enough to meet eyes with Imhotep before Imhotep ran off ahead.

Emain Ablach, Squire of Earth

3-4: It’s trickier than it looks. You wobble, and almost fall once or twice, but you keep your balance in the end and make it across.
———————————

Dropping to the ground on the other side of the wall surprised him by not actually being a drop to the ground itself. Instead, it was to a stone platform some feet above the ground. Emain Ablach looked around, eager to get to the next challenge and somewhat apprehensive to see the ropewalk in front of him.

But there were ropes hanging from further up, so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad—

Carefully, carefully he reached for the first hanging rope and started forward. And with great care and not a great amount of speed—though with a great number of heart attacks for every wobble—Emain Ablach managed the zig-zag of the course without getting himself hurt or breaking his neck.

Imhotep, Page of Mercury

5-6: You’re a natural at this, or maybe you’ve just been through a lot of ropes courses. You whiz through everything in a matter of seconds.
—————————————

He found Emain Ablach, but it was just in time to, again, see him start off on the next obstacle ahead of them. That was enough. He was going to at least catch up to Emain Ablach. A rope course? Imhotep was no acrobat, but he was sure he could figure it out. He reached for that first rope overhead and off he went.

Maybe it was his determination. Maybe it was his knowledge that he needed lunch after all of this. Maybe it was having Promethei behind him. Either way, whatever the reason, Imhotep had very little trouble on the ropes. Even when the supporting ropes got further and further apart, he was able to cross those distances.

It was good enough that he’d caught up with Emain Ablach after all by the end of it. Of course, for all his effort, Imhotep didn’t actually say anything to him even as they met eyes. The important part was that Emain Ablach was no longer beating them, and that Emain Ablach knew it. The fact that they hadn’t established they were in immediate competition beyond the setup of the course was beside the point—

Now where was Promethei—

Promethei, Squire of Mercury

As Promethei had warmed up to grab the ropes, he had three thoughts nearly simultaneously.

1. Pissing Imhotep off was a great motivator for him.
2. Maybe his scout days were the predecessor for a lot of things for him considering how familiar this rope swing obstacle felt.
3. ... ******** were they hot--

He cut his brain off, ran forward, and grabbed the first rope. The ease he felt going from one rope to the next, even as the distance increased, felt like he was flying. As Imhotep looked back for him, Promethei jumped down with a victorious grin and his hands on his hips. "Honestly could go again on that one!"

... Right, they caught back up to Emain Ablach. He nodded gruffly but didn't dare to give more acknowledgment considering, well.

One of the very hot husbands.

Anyway.

3-4: Maybe you’re scared of heights, or maybe you just forget to take a running start. You start a bit slow, but you pick up some speed by the time you get to the end.
————————————
And finally, he got to the last obstacle: a zipline. He thought ziplines were fun! He’d been on a couple before. Never very high or very fast, but ziplines nonetheless. Emain Ablach was more than ready to go, and he eagerly reached for the rope where it was tied around a tree, just to have the rope taken out of his hand. He let go of the rope out of surprise and opened his mouth to rebuke the person snatching it from him.

But to see Imhotep was that person made Emain Ablach instead just take a step back and hold his hands up a bit. He wasn’t sure what Imhotep was doing, what the point was of taking the rope from him and going first instead, but it wasn’t something Emain Ablach cared enough about to argue over. If Imhotep wanted to go first, he could go first.

When the rope made it back to him, it was his turn. At least, Promethei wasn’t rushing to take the rope from him. Emain Ablach sighed slightly. At least Imhotep was acknowledging his existence. That was an improvement, right? As Emain Ablach walked to the edge of the platform and pushed off, he reflected that something was clearly bothering Imhotep about the situation. Otherwise he wouldn’t be acting this way.

But he would worry about it later. As his feet hit the grass below at a dizzying speed, he stumbled forward, sprinted for the finish line, and was glad to be done.

Imhotep saw his opportunity to eke out a lead and went for it. He wasted no time, telling himself that that was the only reason he jumped forward to snag the rope from Emain Ablach and haul a** down the zipline. Maybe he should have gotten a running start, but he didn’t care much about that by the time his feet hit the bottom. He stumbled at first, but only at first.

The important part was that he at least crossed before Emain Ablach. …Even if their times probably were nearly identical…

Promethei, Squire of Mercury

The last step was untying a zipline, looked like. With Emain Ablach and Imhotep dashing off ahead, Promethei brought up the rear and jogged to untie the rope so he could quickly join them. In theory, this should have been easy. He untied ropes regularly, considering how often he tied them--

Why the hell was it not budging?

Promethei knew how this worked. Learning how to tie knots was very much a scouting thing, never mind everything else. Learning how to untie knots was a married skill. His fingers kept sliding, his grip kept burning, the rope wasn't budging, and his feelings on that were hissed curses under his breath. The ******** was wrong with this thing? Magically cursed rope?

Finally.

Promethei snatched it the moment it actually came loose and followed after the other two, mildly thankful that his absolute failure at that hadn't been seen.

His time ultimately ended up a bit better than both Emain Ablach's and Imhotep's. At least that rope gaffe hadn't cost him too much, though that definitely wasn't a winning time. "Not bad!" Promethei was very happy to play off how long it had taken him to get down there.

...And also very happy to leave the obstacle course thing back in his teens.

Dumuzi, Page of Pluto

Obstacle course? Yeah, he could get this s**t. It wasn't dodgy like an actual wild animal. Plus, it wasn't a live contest with people who he hadn't had time to learn yet, which was clearly why he had lost. Just needed to do some competitor study. Right.

He was angry and he couldn't do much about it while he was on some other forest planet thing, but what he could do? Run. Running was something he absolutely could do. Running he had ******** trophies and medals for, and those couldn't really be --

Okay, they could be, but as tempted as he was sometimes he wasn't a cheater. Immoral a-f to do that, and he wasn't immoral. Anyway. He had this s**t easy.

That was why when the first thing was leaping across stones quickly over water? Easy.

Dumuzi, Page of Pluto

Keeping himself fast was the key to winning any obstacle course. This was a time when he didn't let himself have any confidence or any moment of showing off. No flexing. He knew he was good at this, he just needed to show it now.

Oh, a jump? Easy.

He knew that it was supposed to be moved around or whatever for the fact that they were powered, but Dumuzi quickly clocked it, decided he had it, and went for it. Geometry wasn't his strong suit, though, so he ended up overshooting it in the wrong way and grumbling and going for it again. Good enough.

Time to keep ******** moving, he lost time.

Dumuzi, Page of Pluto

And now he was flying again. Dumuzi refused to let himself be brought down by stupid little jump distances because it didn't matter so long as he got there the fastest, and the fastest would only happen if he thought like his trainer. Get up! Go! Go now!

It was why when he was faced with a rope swing, he thought only of grab, grab, grab, swing, grab, swing, and continued to do so without hesitation or further thought.

He let out a guttural scream at the end and headed to the zipline. Time to finish this damn thing.

Dumuzi, Page of Pluto

All he had to do was just grab it and go. Dumuzi immediately launched from the successful rope swinging over to the zipline and went to grab it with both hands so he could start to make his way back down to the ground.

Or at least that was what he thought he was doing. He did not expect to look down just a moment too soon and stumble over his feet to stop himself from taking that leap. The hell was he doing? This wasn't going to get him anywhere. He was losing time. Dumuzi had to keep up the pace if he wanted to win.

He pulled himself together, grabbed the rope, and swung.

Coming down the zipline was fun but he would have been having more fun if he wasn't so concerned about getting to that Neptune Knight and staring into his soul to figure out what he had actually done.

And when he saw the time, he held back a stifled scream under his breath and marched off.

Woods were not his friend.
