Eva

The news reports were a buzz with all these supposed sightings of animals lately. Every one of her social media accounts had feeds full of tales and each sounded as ludicrous as the last. She'd forwarded screengrabs of the more hilarious ones to her boyfriend's personal phone. Every now and then she had to check to make sure she had gotten that number right and she wasn't sending silly things to his work phone instead.

Like silly social news, or photos of the dresses she tried on in preparation for the evening out he'd informed her of. She'd finally selected a light blue piece with a high neck and open back. The soft skirt frothed around her feet with each step. Her hair was left down, the blue and teal refreshed to stand out brightly against her natural pink. Gold bangles and delicate chains decorated her wrists and ears. It was fun to dress up, after all.

Her shawl was drawn closer around her shoulders as she leaned on her elbow at the bar. A colorful, fruity little drink sat in front of her, and she plucked the fruit off the themed pick. The elephants and tigers in the room made her think of the stories she'd been hearing, and it only delighted her.

Eva looked towards Tobias, meeting his violet gaze with a soft, warm smile. It was sappy and silly, but the man made her melt, caused her grin and giggle like a school girl in her first crush. "I am," she beamed towards him, going up on her toes to press a peck against his cheek. The light red wouldn't smudge off on him--one of these days, she was going to leave on all the excess lipstick just to leave some prints on him. Or look up bad brands from beauty guru videos and grab something cheap. "The decorations are cute, though I'm not sure the animals go with the red and white," she mused, looking about the main hall. Her lips pursed and twitched to the side as she considered. She'd have gone with more earth tones, rather than something that made her think of Valentine's Day. The animals were impressive, but hm. Matching in theme? Eh.

She took a sip of her drink and enjoyed the sensation of icy sweetness followed by the warmth blooming in her stomach from the rum. Her hip bumped against him as she eyed him from over the rim of her glass. "If this cold weather keeps up, I vote we hit a beach somewhere warmer." The indoor pools she'd been going to lately just weren't enough to scratch her itch when it came to swimming. Plus the thought of diving amongst a reef thrilled her, and she was sure she could get Tobias into lessons to do it with her...

Somewhere, she thought she heard... a tiger's roar? She jerked, pressing her side closer to Tobias. What..? But. Like the blooming heat in her stomach, the nerves slid away after a moment. It was a normal sound to hear, after all. And why be concerned? She was there with her husband, after all.

Ayesha Kamjik

"I almost didn't have enough time." Ayesha smiled slightly. I was lucky one of the other grad students agreed to finish up the scantrons for me. Which was its own owed favor that Ayesha would be paying back soon enough, she wagered. Alyssa was sweet, ever ready to help, and eternally exhausted — and while Ayesha imagined that she wouldn't call on her for a favor so directly, citing it an even exchange, the translator assumed she'd collapse from exhaustion eventually and require a hospital visit for her antics. Spread too thin, Alyssa ever entertained that specter.

Adel being so happy to see her was its own bittersweet delight; Ayesha encircled him in her arms for a soft hug, her earrings chattering softly between them. But Adel had a drink to fetch, and Ayesha was amiable enough to step away from the man so he would retrieve it. She wasn't certain why drinking seemed like an oddity for him. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.

Maybe it was a sign of all the learning of each other to come. Drawing a sigh, Ayesha tucked her clutch purse beneath her elbow and looked about the room. People everywhere, surely, but no obvious signs for why a sudden flicker overtook the place. Others stopped and stalled and looked around, some barely lifted a brow, others noticed not at all.

She started to wonder, but couldn't finish the thought.

Tobias Banner

Honestly, Tobias considered himself lucky to have Eva for a large variety of reasons--the light she brought into his life, the excitement that came from being with her, all of it was a blessing, but smaller and simpler, having her around for social news covered a fairly large blind spot of Tobias's. He hardly kept up with gossip, really, and so he considered himself very, very lucky that he had a partner who was far more up to date on this sort of thing. It meant he didn't look like a hopeless idiot who never went outside in office conversations, because if it weren't for her he wouldn't have known a thing about the supposed animal sightings.

He'd kept an eye out, as himself and as Idrialite, but he'd had no such run-ins that weren't clearly youma, and while some of them certainly had the vague appearance of a normal animal, they were always off enough that he doubted anyone would confuse them except at a distance.

Oh well. Tonight wasn't about that--tonight was about moving among high society, enjoying the celebration, and perhaps getting to dance a few steps with the love of his life.

"It does seem a bit silly, all told," he said, and he cast a smile over at her. She looked utterly radiant in blue--one of his favorite colors on her, for the way it looked next to her hair and her eyes. One of her favorites, too, clearly.

A little laugh passed his lips at the mention of the weather, and of the long winter. It didn't take long, knowing Eva, to know that she got terribly cooped up if she spent too long away from the water, and he found that utterly charming. Though, in truth, there was little about her he didn't find charming in some way or another.

"Of course we can make time for a beach trip. I'd hate to keep my selkie maiden too far from the sea for too long," he teased, lightly. For all he joked, though, sometimes he did feel like he'd been lucky enough to get and keep a selkie's sealskin, when he found Eva. Lucky especially because it was a sealskin freely given, to be freely returned whenever his maiden should want.

"I think I'd like to take a look upstairs, darling." He finished his drink, and set the empty glass down. "Join me?" He beckoned, giving her the chance to follow.

Megumi Himura

Megumi glanced briefly in the direction she thought she'd heard an elephant sound from, and then shrugged her shoulders. Clearly it was nothing. Her brother hadn't reacted at all, and why should he? This was something totally expecvted, if a bit loud.

"I hope he makes it," she said idly, and she took a sip of the champagne she'd picked up at the bar. There were such a fascinating variety of people here, and she knew that she was attracting glances, which...why sohuldn't she? She was a tall, imposing woman in a tight dress that drew attention to her figure and that also showed off the tattoos that spread own her arms and shoulders. She had to look like a wild contrast to her brother, with a good ten inches' difference in their heights and his much more reserved dress. She was of the opinion that it was silly, personally; this was America, and there was no shame in tattoos. Few people would know what the ink spilled across her body meant, and most would assume that it was some sort of statement of rebellion or something else, not a mark of a criminal organization.

"Seen anyone else you know, yet?" She asked. At his shrug, she laughed a little. "Too bad. You seem to know the most interesting people, little brother."

She took a few steps away, towards the dance floor, and then glanced over at the stairs that would lead her away. Perhaps there? It was strange, but she felt like it might be important to leave here and go elsewhere. It wasn't as if there was much happening on this floor anyway; she wasn't interested in drinking, and she didn't exactly have anyone to dance with. She could try with Taiki, certainly, but it would mostly be a comedy. So, she turned, and headed out.

"I'm going to head upstairs. I think there might be more to do, and more people to meet." She offered, though there was hardly an obligation. "We don't have to stay together, of course." She preferred having her brother on hand, but she wasn't going to chain him down and demand he stick with her when he might not be interested in doing so.

With that, she turned and headed for the stairs.

Taiki Himura

Megumi might not be drinking, but Taiki was. Not heavily, but he had a glass of champagne on hand. He wasn't there to network the way she was, though, so he wasn't quite as worried about keeping a clear head.

As much as his head was ever clear these days. He felt like he was constantly having headaches and was never quite able to chase his thoughts. It had started a long time ago, when he'd brought those hairsticks home from his wonder, and it had slowly been getting worse. He'd considered returning them in them hopes of ending the headaches and the strange noises that seemed to accompany them, but something told him to keep them. Not the least because even if they refused to work for him currently, what they'd done for Izanagi was incredibly useful. For the most part, tonight had been a relief from his stresses. No relief ever lasted for long, of course, and he was sure by the end of the night he would be stepping outside and praying that fresh air did something for a crushing headache, but for the moment, he was doing alright.

"No one I know well," he said, when his sister asked about connections, and shrugged. "A few people who have been by the offices, but none I've had more than a few moments' conversation with." In other words: mostly the people that overlooked him as The Help, in his role as Philippe's secretary. Their mistake, in his opinion. Taiki knew his value, and knew what he did for Philippe, and if people wanted to brush by him, that was on them.

He finished his glass, and set it aside, and briefly considered going fro more, but decided not to. He wasn't here to get wine-drunk and stupid. He was here to have a nice night, and maybe help out his sister if the opportunity presented itself. The vague buzz from a single glass of bubbly was more than enough.

Her suggestion made him pause, and consider, and he glanced after her as she started to head off. Perhaps upstairs was the better idea than just standing around and hoping, especially since he wasn't exactly going to fight the possibility of getting to see more of what was going on here. There was so much to see, and so much to do, that it was silly to just...stay in one place.

So, he turned and began heading for the stairs.

Mackenzie Taylor

She ignored the news reports. She rolled her eyes at the gossip at the University. Elephants and horses in the streets? Completely unattended? How incredibly stupid and gullible could people possibly be? If the Negaverse was up to something and these were youma sightings, she was sure she would know about it. So instead, she took it all with a grain of salt - things like this were exactly why Mackenzie preferred her own company and kept to herself. While Mackenzie was far from being a social butterfly, she never turned down a fancy party that included the opportunity to dance and schmooze. It didn’t even cross her mind that the invitation was strange or that she didn’t know who invited her – of course she was invited. If nothing else, she could convince herself that someone from the DCBC that had known her prior to her moving on from ballet had sent it.

As she got ready for the event, she parted her hair down the middle to cover her undercut and pulled it all into a low, classy chignon. She wore a blush colored dress with a dangerously low neckline and a slit to show off her well-toned dancer’s legs. She was proud of her body and was never ashamed to show it off, her confidence practically exploded out of her. Her outfit however was not conducive to riding her motorcycle to the event, so she had to suffer through an awful Uber ride with a driver that wouldn’t shut up or keep his eyes on the road. When they finally arrived at their destination, she stepped out of his vehicle without so much as a thank you, and quite literally strutted in through the large front doors. As she walked, she turned heads and that put the smallest, slyest of smiles upon her thick lips. She had every intention of spending her evening convincing dopey men to buy her drinks until she’d had enough and went on to reunite with her one true love – dance. Catching a glimpse of her first victim, she leaned in close at the bar and smiled.

After he bought her drink, she stepped away and immediately took a sip through a straw and moved to sway to the music that was playing. She also chose to completely ignore the sound of tigers roaring, although she knew very well what she heard. She was lost in the moment and refused to allow anything or anyone to pull her out of it.

And then the lights flickered.. She closed her eyes and took a deep, calming breath. She was doing everything in her power not to throw her half-empty glass to the floor and demand that whatever was going on stop immediately less it ruin her night! Instead, she opened her eyes to the dimness of the room, quirking an eyebrow as she took a look around. People were shuffling around her, bumping into each other and causing a ruckus. With a groan, she moved along with the herd like a bunch of animals and started climbing the stairs.

Mags Butler

"Sounds like a plan to m...."

Her voice trailed off as she found herself distracted by the lights flickering, her mind going black for more than a moment or two.
