It wasn't for the count to say when it was appropriate for him to enter the royal land, let alone waltz up to whomever was in charge or otherwise very busy, but he seldom cared about such posturing. He knew above all else that his was a face that could forgive him of any sins against the structured powers. It reminded him of how, when he first began this journey into noble life, he was assailed by hardened eyes and words to pierce the sinews that held that smile of his in place; it did him good to remember how those same people had come to be hopelessly charmed by him.

As the meeting with the lord of House Xerseis came to a close, the count was filled with a similar feeling. It was bright orange, pure confidence. His aura was not allowed to show it, however, as he was also brutally determined to enact all the glorious, upward things talked about in the confidence of that labyrinth. Instead he bounced along the horizon as a backward sun, skipping as a scarlet stone in a pool of orange and purple.

All the way to the castle he went. Those on lookout were able, of course,
to spot him right away--it did, after all, look like the sun had budded off a little offspring who seemed more keen on playing in the big world set out by its parent. Two guards made a bet on who it was, and, after agreeing that it could only be the lord of House Titanus, immediately struck up another wager on whether or not he would destroy the lawn--finally, as one could imagine,
they laughed and started a pool on how much lawn would be destroyed before they would have to shoo him off or begrudgingly offer the count a seat in some drafty room.

"Magnificent!" The count whispered to himself, aura curling inward slowly as it dissipated. There was a charred patch of earth where he had landed, but no crater. Soon the guards came.

"Lord Titanus," the called, stamping their hard boots into the dirt before him. "I'm sorry, but the queen is not taking visitors at this time."

    "Is that so?"

"... Y-Yes," he nodded gravely upon summoning his resolve. He clicked his polearm once. "I'm sorry, sir, but we're going to have to ask that you leave." Dixon, of course, was not ready to accept this.

"Never mind her Highness," he said, firmly setting his gaze on the door of the place, looking through the guard to whom he was speaking. "I'll be content to see Youkimi." And here another explanation...

"You say things that are very true, my good man," he hurried, "but I'm sure I know her Eminence. She will be happy to council with me for a moment or two. The kingdom, I assure you, will not fall." He stared holes in their heads, losing that lightness for which he was known for a dominant fire. "I will wait for her earliest convenience. Surely her Majesty's guard will not turn away tea from the most active member of her peerage... Would they?" It could be said that this was bullying, but that was exactly what the servile types were good for, no matter how highly they were stationed.

Inside the estate, the count was seated in a sitting room and brought a tray from which to serve himself. He requested he be brought something to write on and with; he'd been determined to practice writing as much as possible in his downtime so to cut the cord, so to speak, from his stationary staff at his Titanian estate. He went on practicing his sentences, simple though they were, as he waited for his partner-in-crime to see him. He found it soothed his excitement, writing like this; although he was nowhere near a straight translation of his thoughts to the page, before he was done he would at least have a few sentences scrawled out on that parchment. His handwriting, he found, needed the most work, as well as he grammar. But that, as all things, he was told, came with practice.

Baroness Youkimi Kai

Living today without a way
To understand the weight of the world

While the queen rested and recovered, and after Youkimi had made it a point to offer advice and direction for those within her area of influence, it was made known to her that the palace had another visitor. It was not the mayor, but a more vibrant wing, and one that she was informed that had requested to see her in the queen's absence.

She requested that a tray of tea meet her and Count Titanus in the room they would be meeting in. She made her way from the study, from the writing desk that had consumed a fair portion of her afternoon as she looked over reports, wrote out instructions for others, and relegated new trade routes to her contacts and to those within Ethe who traded and bolstered business.

It did not take long for her to make it back to the room in question, where she would be meeting with Dixon. It had been a while, and she hoped that he was well. She hadn't heard from him since the initially hostile engagement on the open road with Sir Roland and surprisingly joined by Queen Ophelia. She hoped that the meeting had ended well. She found him writing on a notepad, quite at ease. But then, he even seemed to be excited about something. Was it why they wanted to meet? And after that point, was he here to speak with his friend Youkimi, or to the baroness who acted as steward for Ethe?

"You asked to see me?"

The pen was dropped, the paper pronouncing the pure exclamation in the count's mind in that instant of Youkimi's arrival. "Yes yes yes!" he buzzed, waving over the stewardess, his friend. "I was in the area and decided, why not, to drop by and tell you the good news myself: Lord Xerseis and I have just stricken up the neatest deal you could imagine." He, of course, would leave out some things; better not to overload the baroness; though he wouldn't be able to hide the fresh scars all over his visible skin. "Resources! In exchange for workers from Etelan and the rest of my land, of course, but, ah, don't we say that things run smoothly when the gears fit together? Maybe we'll be able to have a festival next year? I'd have the duke here first thing--provided we aren't isolated for all eternity."

What consternation was just at the help of a goddess? Was it not better to say that things had become sour? In honesty, admitting this, would the count dare to think that he knew better? --then again, it was perhaps this lack of communication which led to the less-than-appropriate provisions from her Grace.

"... How has it been, this life of being queen?" Dixon seemed to be more concerned than blatantly excited now. "I cannot thank you enough for the help. My elite will no doubt become ever-more-so upon my return with the help of your ace, ours, Hisoka." Was it immediately a provocation to militarise? Why was it not a shared blame: the neighboring countries would not hear of it, but when it was boiled down to a fine stock one could clearly taste the bitter, foul notes of jealously and, yes, outright ethnocentrism--far be it from the count not to take that as something vindicating for he and his flock; simply to know he was on even ground as those-who-will-not-be-named in the capitals of countries-forgetting-certain-obvious-relationships-of-antiquity...--it was all the more energising to keep going, searching out those who would share, as it were, mutual appreciation of one another's strength, rather than the covetous row afforded the traditional, banal entanglements these political endeavours--yes, such blasphemies as survival...--tended to devolved into. Simply, if one were to look at this as a test, one could quickly find that those who passed were those who held a high enough base intellect not to bother with arm-wrestling the waking giant (would it be too much, here, to suggest that Ethe's strength was validated each time these petty accusations of xenophobia were incited--the country being treated as a threat also--each time the smaller nation began to show signs of true self-sufficiency? Perhaps it would be a question for the former peerage: would it be a better trading partner one who is sick but willing or healthy and independent?) but instead to, I don't know, hypnotise it, render its strength your tool, charm it for Pete's sake!--well, wouldn't that be smarter? Dixon was searching for that.

Youkimi was a little surprised that Dixon swept up as he did. He was excited, and there was a lot that must have happened in their time apart. Lord Xerseis? This needed an explanation. Perhaps it had been her time away and her lack of interaction with the imperial court, but... She had not heard of him.

"Lord Xerseis? What kind of deal?"

Though... as his concern rose, she gestured to a chair. She would also take a seat. Would it help their livestock problem..? More likely than naught, it concerned things on a bigger scale, as was suggested by his latest letter that asked for use of Hisoka's skill to train others.

"I am not queen, Dixon..." But, he knew that. She was kept busy, and had a lot of things on her mind. A lot of things to worry about. Like this new livestock illness, the panic of the people, and the growing concern that came from the toxic fogwall that was both protection and fearsome limiter.

What was on his mind? What was Dixon working toward? She wanted to know what his goals were. She worried, but was this the proper time to voice it when there were so many other feelings going through her mind.

"Yes, the best deal one could hope for," he began happily, "a simple one at that." Dixon shifted in his chair, ground his excitement, it seemed. "Lord Xersies is an up-and-coming duke in Phobos. I'd like to think he and I are of similar minds--after today's meeting I am very reassured. He and I have agreed it be for the better of both nations to share our strengths, covering any shortcomings in the other. He has agreed to help repair my lands; I will issue bonds and provide serf contracts." His plan was simple. "Youkimi... It isn't perfect, but damnit," he tensed, "when someone hands you a rope you damnwell take it--and if they're a friend the repayment will not be so hard to bear."

════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

"Only joking," he laughed. "Though one can't be blamed for thinking so, way you've been moving these past weeks." He wasn't exactly lying here. He leaned back, seeming to be engulfed in a preternatural bliss.

"... Youkimi," he said, eyes to the ceiling. "I'm excited. There isn't much else to say," he came back to human level. "This is exactly what I was meant to do. This is the reason the Goddess gave me her blessing in that hot, black mountain. What else is there to say? What I set out to do is done. Ethe's heart has begun to stir again; I can feel her hot blood beneath my every step, in each breath I expelled extolling Her triumph! Soon we will--" His victorious waxing was interrupted by the in-bursting of a scribe.

"--TERROR IN THE FIELDS!" it cried, exploded and deflating the air around their conversation. "Thousands of livestock dead--all at once! No one can make sense of it. People are panicking!" Dixon, however, just snarled in his chair, gripping the edges of his armrests like the covetous grip of dagger hilts. What was he saying! Didn't he know things were only on the up since the return of the blessed Lady of the Fire?

"Now see here!" Snapped the count. "I'm sure you--"

"--Sir! There's no time to argue about it... The land is--is dying..." All came silent in an instant. No one looked at Youkimi; each had their own demon to fight, their own devil upon whose defeat all would be undone--for malice was always in misfortune... Dixon chose to slay the weak royalty in his rage-dimension; then he turned his sights, inwardly, at the Goddess herself... Nobody moved; all heads were tilted in pain and fear--at least, that's what the count and the messenger resigned to for the moment.

He was so very excited, and he recognized it. However, the worrisome part of her was not knowing who this duke was or what his purpose was. There was a very high likelihood of there being strings attached to this deal that was arranged. Serf contracts and repaired lands? What else had been agreed to? But details aside, he felt so motivated by everything that had happened, that had led to this point, and what he anticipated would happen next. His purpose to restore Ethe, she hoped, but how?

Then came the surprising arrival of the messenger. She frowned, quite displeased with yet another sudden arrival. Was there a reason she was surprised so often without others calling to announce themselves? Ah, this was the messenger. It felt kin to having a town crier present in the room for all the volume.

But, she was newly bothered by the message. Livestock dead meant that future food reserves were unlikely. Many who were moving in and settling into the land were eating off of the fruit of the trees and the natural crops, which unfortunately meant there was little in reserve. Many of the livestock had been brought in, and without initial symptoms, they had been allowed to stay. But, now she worried for those who were not from Ethe.... It proved lethal if they did not belong to this land.

Was the fogwall beginning to collapse on the land? Fall inward? She exhaled slowly. "Tell me of the crops and the plants of the fields and orchards..."

The messenger was startled. "Mi'lady?"

The baroness reiterated. "The plants. Do they fall?"

The messenger thought back. Then, finally, he did shake his head. "No... the crops and fields are still green."

"Still ripe for harvest?"

The messenger nodded weakly.

"Then we are no worse off than we were a month ago..." She breathed steadily and carefully. "Let the guards and magistrates know that what meat can't be preserved, dried and salted safely, should be burned and the ashes used for fertilizer. I recommend keeping our faith in the crops and orchards. We cannot bring in livestock from other lands until the wall around our nation fades. We should not tempt it."

Ah, but were it so simple as to convince others that they would yet survive. She knew that raising these animals was not only a serious investment and came with a cost, but that it was a way of life that was supplementary to the agricultural state.

"If you would be so kind?" She urged the messenger. He seemed to calm down as he turned to excuse himself and to relay this new message, his mind clearly thinking. As he left, Youkimi reflected on the situation and on Dixon's joke. There must have been something to that... the appearances. She had no desire for the throne. The queen had requested this and the baroness saw the need. For Dixon....

"I pray you're right..."

    Pray...

Yes, pray. Pray. When all had seemed lost: pray. When all was coming up rosy and gold in the fields which were once grey and ash: pray. When the enemies were the rhythm of nightmare and the sun took its careful time to wake you with sweet warming: pray...

Dixon hadn't fully registered that he was being spoken to. For a time it just felt like Youkimi was an inner voice--perhaps more literally than in the past--to push him into his most natural state. Had it always been this way? Was he born to feel so bound to god? He couldn't imagine a learned behavior being so strong...

When these times, when God has forsaken: pray...

It was his official opinion, because he felt strong about it both ways, that the goddess had spurned them and had, in whatever grand plan, with his own hands could feel, outlived her usefulness to the people of Ethe. Dixon had grown so used to being reverent; he hadn't the inclination, however, to depend so completely on the grace of the goddess. Instead, why not, he wanted both: to be able to kneel and thank the deity that had brought them from ruin while showing her, yes, that her child could move, could walk, could, bloody hell, make a decision that was indeed correct and for the good of all--to be able to get a thing right! He couldn't fathom...

"Yes.... Yes-I-I hope so." A very real chill had stricken him dumb. His aura was a cold, muddy blue. It spend out as fingers over a sleeping lover in the night, undeniably there and only half-felt. "I want to be right," he whispered, hands wrung tight, "just this once..."

She hadn't expected her words to have so great an impact, and yet at the same time, that he still could hear her was a relief and a comfort. He was doing so much for their nation, and his motivations were ones she had learned to trust with time. He was his own being. If she hovered over him and hounded him, what kind of councilor or friend was she?

No, Dixon flourished best when he acted in his best heart. It astounded so many how he seemed to break through the sense of propriety, how he stood up to those who felt invulnerable or self-righteous, how he rose so easily to the defense of those who needed him.

What could she say to him now? What was proper?

"Dixon... this is a tentative and frightening time for our people." She began carefully, starting with something they both knew because of the way things had been going. It was all Youkimi could do to keep the people somewhat together without the support of the traveling mayor and so few of the nobility helping her. "Do you feel this is the right thing to do?"

"Right?" He seemed to be tensing up--one could call it an inflation--to a solidity at which he could function. Back straightening, shoulders coming back, hair fixed out of his face: the man was ready to be a man again. "Right. Right." He arched his fingers in front of him. "Of course it's right. I'm turning Ethe to Ethe, and giving the people a nation to believe in again. Their confidence is mine: each nation I go to, I have growth to report, and full assurance that Ethe is with me; they sense that, my carefully chosen confidantes, and together we are able to believe in a strong Ethe." He found the words funny, but said them anyway, resolutely: "Tomorrow's Ethe."

════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

And with that came the plans. Dixon came right up and laid the piece of paper he was working on in front of them (face down), checked for ghosts, and went to work. He was drawing fantastic circles. Each of them stood for a province of Ethe. He drew lines, arrows, made connections as he remembered them; and he remembered all of them. She would see them as the soul-tattoos they were.

She could see the alliance that came naturally to Etelonians and Kaishino; feel the tension throughout the northwest; hear the mystery in the wind that never stopped in the southern half: each of these things in the stroke of a pen in the hands of the count.

"Here's where our energy needs to be focused," he said. "Our population will understand: we're going to pool our labor force the best way like this, and after a year, my smartest have decided, it will be time to flip," he tugged at the bottom edge of the page. "Then we can focus on the southern land. It may seem rough, unfair even, but this will maximise our growth. I'm sure of it!" He looked up, watching his plan reach his baroness.

They discussed and talked about what could be done next. Plans for the future were first scratched out on paper, marking out visually what could be done next. It was a plan, and it started with what could be done from his current place of influence.

"As I act as stewardess, I have another looking over the affairs of Kaishin in my absence." She alerted Dixon to this, and she gave the name of the individual in question, someone who she trusted to act and to deliberate with Dixon. At her request, a nearby servant brought paper and pen, and she was able to write out a simple note to explain that could be delivered to the knight she left watching Kaishin and its people.

She signed it and sealed it with her mark before handing this to Dixon. She hoped that his efforts would go as he wished, but also hoped that her people were as understanding as he wished. He had charisma, yes, but all had their ability to choose as they wished.

"What should we discuss next?"

"Next," said the count, somewhat renewed; the news of help in Kaishin was very welcome. "--next must see to it that we can be independent should the need arise. Our agriculture will feed any growth we wish; it is our opinion in Etelan and Titania that we will be limited only by our imagination and drive. We must think of ways to improve the economy. Too much concentrated in agriculture will squander what the volcano has so cruelly given us; so, my men and I have been analysing what is possible for us at the moment." He took a sip of his tea, preparing for this next bit.

"We have been known for our farming, it's true, but we lag behind Bellris; everyone knows this. Our mining is second to Zalto; this will likely not change either, though we will give our utmost effort. Our most militant states still pale in comparison to the might of Phobosian generals, and our ability to... acquire," he admitted with a hidden snarl, "like those in Lionis Proper has never been." These grim facts did not seem to deter him--one could also hear the echoing phantom of a Cyn Bronswell in the room--but rather he seemed all the more assured. "However, all of it matters not."

"What we have, in being second best, runners-up, in everything, is the ability to become the most diverse economy on the map!" he declared, looking quite pleased with himself. "No longer will we rely on Bellris to raise crops and cattle for us in the dry season; we will not need the refinement of Zaltan jewelers; gone are the days of the usefulness of Phobos' smithy; the Lionis aristocracy has outlived its grace--in the years to come we are an Ethe for Ethe's sake, no one else's. And I have little patience for those who suggest otherwise." He held up and finger. "Tomorrow's Ethe will trade, but it will trade with other nations because it wants to. You can tell our partners to hold their thanks until after they receive a finished product." He continued drawing, demarcating mines and farming land with the best of his memory. They were scattered throughout Etelan and the mountains leading from the royal lands--a backbone of jewels down Ethe's fair body. In Titania, the pen stopped.

"Our artists can no longer be bothered to live in squalor; tomorrow's Ethe will seat them in the vacation capital of the world: Titania. By doing this we will ensure our guests are exposed to the height of culture. Know it or not, the aristocracy of other lands will continue to support our growth: we trade help with ranching into support of art and higher thought. As such, I need every sharp-minded artists--no matter the medium--to be encouraged by lower taxes to move to Titania; just the same, I'd ask that the most able-bodied be moved to Etelan and Kaishin for the time being."

"And," he continued, now drawing little lines in a sort of--what it?--a path from Solidon to Titania, "I have construction on the mind as of late. Here we have a road--not the conventional sense, I'm sure, but a road nonetheless. It will be nothing more than a series of pillars. It will guide those flying and be lined with archers for protection against monsters that would otherwise slow down a caravan. They connect all our provinces, in time, and will be," here he seemed to firm up, "tax free. I cannot agree to anymore taxed roads after the debacle with Ophelia and Hysteria; these roads, what they lack in tax revenue they will make up for in efficiency of trade. I cannot will not make concessions for such things of the past, which allow foreign hands to dig into our pockets."

Diversifying instead of specializing? In a way, it was what they had always done, but giving it a bit more power and weight, allowing Ethe to become specialized in its own ways that didn't necessarily mass produce. If Dixon wanted to try it, now was the time to try new things... but she found herself hoping that there were more certain methods. She was trusting Dixon's plans a lot with this.... and also hoping for the best. As stewardess, she was concerned. As baroness, she had hope. As a friend, she was anxious.

"Logical..." Removing the tax roads was a step against Ophelia's decision, but since they didn't require food from Bellris... if but for the moment, and if they could continue supporting their own people with locally-grown crops, then perhaps they could do as they wished on this front. But, lower taxes were a great encouragement in this particular time. Certainly better than imposing punishment.... "That can be done."

She poured herself another cup of tea and mixed in a few lunks of sugar. Cream was a product that had been remarkably low in Ethe the last few months, and for good reason. She hadn't asked the kitchens to get more of anything they couldn't easily procure or store. They were still in a state of national crisis even before the fear that the messenger relayed to them.

"What manpower will you use to move all these components of the overall plan into motion?" She stirred her tea slowly and deliberately. "How will you convince the others that the artists are not receiving undue treatment for their talent? And for that matter, what assurity does the rest of the nation have that we are not using the state of things to boost the few lands directly in our influence alone?"

"Youkimi..." He shook his head: "The people know: it is either this or die for our fair Mother Ethe." Or rather, they will know. How to tell them more simply? "There is no other way around it. We will assure them, as my men have seen, that the regular population, if it is distributed as it was, cannot have the force to reshape the country; they will soon find, when the extra hands yield an abundant harvest, when houses are resurrected at a phenomenal rate, when our mines are restored, that this is the best way." Here the count was now, as the moon began to peek out from behind a curtain of ink in the night, boxing Youkimi in with his hands firmly sunk into the armrests of her chair; from his eyes was a grip of even greater intensity.

"I know you... You worry. We need confidence!" He pleaded. "They will sense any doubt. The people need to be shown that we know what we are doing. As steward, you will be able to put to rest any doubt; your orders are law and a people with nowhere to go will stay. Trust me. This. Will. Work."

Then, Dixon had a firm grip on the situation. Perhaps his faith should be what she depended on in this situation. Focusing on that should help alleviate her own doubts. He had given this a lot of thought, she was able to tell from the amount of detail he went over the plans with. It certainly was more well formulated than other lesser lords who came in with vague uncertainties and begging for help. Dixon was better prepared. Or perhaps it was his charisma that let her believe so. But then, it could have been his proximity and how close he was now.

In one of the few moments of her life, she was speechless. Fortunately, she was able to gather her nerves together. Before her was Count Titanus, he had plans in motion to restore Ethe to prominence and to power, to be a force worth paying attention to in the land, and he begged for confidence now.

Perhaps she could borrow that confidence. She diverted her gaze from his and set her teacup down on the saucer. Then, she dared to look back to his eyes again. She pat one of the hands that was on the armrest. He probably didn't mean to be intimidating, but one could misconstrue the gesture if they came in at the wrong moment. Besides, as a trusted friend who was pleading his case, he was focused on the plan at hand and her support, not on how he appeared to her at this particular moment.

"Then you will have my support, Dixon." She just needed to remember his face when asked about this plan. He had confidence and determination. Ethe depended on this going well. A worthy risk. "It is late.... Is there aught else for us to discuss?"

Dixon would take the hint, relenting back to his old posture. The scandal if someone where to find them! Makes a boy think though... About the time by the river? This was just like that, wasn't it? Dixon felt that old fire returning to him. His body,
though tired, was still strong; he knew that if he moved at the speed of his ambition that he would find himself there. Wouldn't you know:
it felt just like this. Like home.

"Almost done," he said reassuring lady Kai. He was standing now, tucking the words Youkimi'd penned in his jacket. While he was in there, he fished out a pen of his own and tossed it down onto the map that had been drawn. "I'm going to build," he admitted with a small amount of visible conflict, "a temple to our goddess. We're alive now because of her; we can forget our grumbling for a moment to honor her; I fear going forward that our people will come to be godless, and this is something that will never do." Showing his scruples above all else, the count pressed on, pointing to Etelan: "And here we will erect a temple to the god of old, Pelib. I am of the impression that deities do not like to be forgotten anymore than us; their power certainly begs appeasement... --regardless, this is the god of mine and many more provinces; I intend to give the people a chance to reconnect with their god." And now...

Dixon stooped down, scrawling out 'TOMORROW'S ETHE' on the head of the map. Then he flipped it over. "And now," he began as he set the pen in front of Youkimi. "I will give you the remainder of the monies stored away in my Lionis account. Please," he insisted, "I won't hear objections. Simply write out the sum of thee thousand and it will be yours. And now the baroness was faced with the words Dixon had been writing when she found him:

"OURS IS A RED, BURNING HEART."
    "THE GOD IS ITS PEOPLE."
    "TOMORROW'S ETHE IS STRONG, BEAUTIFUL."
