82: Aurabelle didn't like quizzes very much. Tests were even worse. Thankfully, they got a really good grade. I guess I'm pretty good, they thought proudly. Okay, they were preening, but hey--the preening had been earned. They were smart, after all.75: Fenaret was proud of the grade he'd gotten in this test. He hadn't had a test in a while, so it was gratifying to see that he'd done well on this one. He gave his teacher a smile of gratitude as he received his grade. After all, it was thanks to his teacher that he had done so well!98: Darryl's eyes widened when he saw this score. Almost perfect! He felt so proud he thought he'd explode. He couldn't wait to show mother his grade when he got home! They'd be so proud of him. He wondered what Da and Evey would think. Would they be proud of him too? Maybe I can get Evey to bake brownies tonight...78: Only one thing made Francesca's score on this test better: he'd beaten his brother by three points. Sure, it wasn't a competition, and he didn't like the idea of beating his brother (who would? Fena was the best!) but it was still something to hold his head high over. After class, he gave Fena a handshake to show no hard feelings. When he explained this, his brother giggled. Oh well. Let him giggle!87: Denidar passed with flying colors, to his relief. He'd hate to see the expression on his older sister's face if she ever found out that he'd flunked a test in social studies! At best, she'd sigh. At worse, she'd give him a lecture about everything that went wrong. Thankfully, that would not be necessary this time. He gave his brother a high-five for passing.44: Raniol was frankly shocked to see that he'd gotten a passing grade on today's test! Well, whaddya know, he was smarter than he'd thought after all! He leaned over the aisle to give his twin brother a high-five for passing the test.46: Quilo was relieved to get a good grade on today's test. He'd been doing poorly in school lately--at least something had finally gone right with his life. He sighed with relief and headed back to his dorm when class ended. Yay. Good grades? Meh, whatever.52: Zuna's grade was acceptable for a social studies test. If this had been something important, like art, they might have gotten a bit more upset. But as it was, this was a grade to be glad for. They resolved to have some sort of party in their dorm tonight. They'd earned it.23: Okay, so, funny story time. Last night, Kunibert's roommate and best friend Naihilus had suggested to him that he study for the test in social studies today. And last night, it had been pretty funny. Social studies was an easy class, why would he need to study? Well, the...frankly terrible grade he'd gotten on today's exam seemed like a pretty good reason to study. He groaned and started gently knocking his head against the desk. Stupid, stupid, stupid!67: Naihilus had always had a certain respect for social studies. It was an interesting class. People were...odd, but worth the effort to study. He'd certainly studied last night, although his attempts to convince Kuni to study as well had fallen on deaf ears. Oh well. At least he himself had gotten a good grade. He resolved to take all of their pets for a walk this evening to give the Dryad space (and quiet) to study in. 14: There was a test today. Whoops. Melisara had completely forgotten to study for it! That was the best--the only--excuse she had for the abysmal grade she'd gotten on today's test. She was normally good at this subject! Oh well. She'd just have to try again...59: Jie hadn't gotten her best score ever, but it was a passing grade, and honestly, she'd settle for a passing grade when it came to social studies. She wasn't exactly confident in her skill in this class, after all. She smiled and looked over at her friends, hoping to see how they had done.

Kunibert did even worse on the second try of the test. Drat. He groaned with frustration. He'd study in the library this time. That would get things done. That way, he wouldn't be tempted to pet Mushroom all night.Melisara did worse on the test. She thought she'd cry. What was wrong? She'd thought she'd known all of the answers! There was only one thing for it: she'd have to try again.

Studying in the library did the trick. Kunibert's third try at the exam did the trick, and soon he was relaxing in his room, giving Mushroom and Omph celebratory ear rubs. "Okay, I vill study next time," he told his roommate.
"Glad to hear it," the Litch murmured in response.Melisara's third time brought success. She breathed a sigh of relief. She wasn't losing her touch after all! Thank goodness for that. She finally allowed herself to relax.

Freshling 1: Kyle
Kyle wasn't good at tests. The little Freshling got so anxious at the idea of this one they burst into tears. After being consoled a little they (still sniffling) attempted to write some answers down, but it was obvious they weren't doing very well when they handed in the sheet half-blank.
Freshling 2: Dayn
Dayn puzzled over the answers, but eventually handed in a sheet with most of them filled out. The one question he hadn't filled out he'd written a short apology in the question box.

Freshling: Kyle
This time with the assistance of their sibling beforehand (not during the test - that would be cheating!!!) to keep them calm, Kyle managed a passing score. The shriek of glee afterwards could probably be heard down the hall.

“It was a bit hard to pick a city. I wanted to pick a city that had something to do with me, but I’ve really only lived here my whole life. So after looking at a bunch of different cities I finally decided to pick Shellmount. Shellmount is a coastal city in imp territory that specializes in salt and seafood. I picked the city for various reasons. One is that I really like seafood and I kind of use salt a lot. The second reason was that while I’m a hybrid a lot of my traits are imp, so I wanted to pick an imp city and due to the aeroport for Geist zeppelins I can tie in my geist heritage too. " Amatsu reported, that would be good right?

Nkiruka looked over the cities on the map and tried to pick just one. It was awfully difficult. Finally, she settled on one. "I picked Valir to study," she said. "The new Valir, anyway. It was built to replace the old Valir when the--when it was firebombed in the war." She looked guiltily at some of her classmates, the Daydreams. It wouldn't be nice to implicate them in the destruction. "Ever since then, the Geists have been trying to rebuild Valir. They've got a really big aeroport even though they haven't finished building it yet. My dad says that's because they need to bring materials in to build it. It's also the only major Geist city that doesn't have a prince, since the royal family of Valir died during the war.
"I picked Valir because I'm a Geist and because my dad and all of his friends are super into Geist culture."

Zalir blushed. "I, um...I couldn't, uh, decide on a governmental system," Zalir said. "So, uh, I...Ipickedonerandomly." Zey coughed and tried to continue. "I, um, I picked the Grimm. Not a lot is known about Grimm governments before the w-war. All we know comes from the surviving pack. Um, they say that G-Grimms have a-always lived in packs and that they're ruled by the, um, most magically gifted member of their pack. Or rather," zey said conscientiously, "their shaman, the leader, is chosen from among the most magically gifted of the pack. Er. The shaman's partner or partners is--or are--called the alpha. The shaman leads hunts and protects the pack with, er, with ritualistic magic. There's only been one pack for a long time, though, I think, so maybe traditions were different back then? But these days, there's just one pack and that's how it governs itself." Slowly, Zalir sank back into zeir seat.

Cal shrugged. "I picked the Fallen government of Below because my mother and I are both Fallen. Both of us originally came from Cassiel's Watch. Fallen government is pretty simple compared to a lot of other governments. Families and cities alike are ruled by a geriarchy, where the older you are, the more power you have. Young people are expected to defer to their elders and respect and accept their decisions. This is especially prominent in the government of Cassiel's Watch and the Winged Isle. They're ruled by a council of Elders. These elders are called the "Arch-regents," and they make all of the decisions for our people. Generally these are pretty good decisions--they worked with the arch-regents of Above to end the war, so I guess you could even argue that the rules of Cassiel's Watch and the Winged Isle look out for the good of all people everywhere. I don't think I'd do well there, though," she added with a smile. "I'm way too rebellious, my mom says."

Eidil thought about it for a little while, then decided to go with the obvious answer. "I picked the Demon government for a couple reasons. First, I'm a Demon, and so's everyone in my family, so it was kind of a no-brainer there. The other reason is that we all live in Asphodel, or most of us do, anyway, which is a Demon province. Demon governance has sort of changed a lot over the years. In the olden days," and here Eidil giggled to be using such an old-fashioned phrase, "Demons were ruled by the Sovereign family. The ruler was the sovereign, of course, and ruled over all Demon-dom. They had spouses, called the lady sovereign, the lord sovereign, or the liege sovereign, depending on their gender, and their children were called princes, princesses, or princens, depending on gender, again. Rule over certain provinces was held by the sovereign's chosen representative in the region, the liege, lady, or lord. Again, depending on gender. These days, though, Demons aren't ruled by the Sovereign, although there still is a sovereign. Today we're ruled by the Great Council, and the lieges, ladies, and lords have been replaced by elected governors. I think this works better with modern society," she added. "It gives us more flexibility, which is something us Demons have always loved."

Xenophon hesitated. Which form of government should he choose? "I know that most people would expect me to pick the Chimera government, since I'm a Chimera, but I'd rather talk about the Geist government. The rest of my family are Geists, and all of my dad's friends are Geist or part Geist or are otherwise more interested in Geist culture than anyone else's. Which isn't to say I don't respect those other cultures," he added hastily, "it's just that I know more about Geists than I do about Chimeras." He took a deep breath. "Ever since the first sack of Valir, Geists have been ruled by Princes. Princes can be any gender, unlike Demon princes. There were six princes during the heyday of Geist culture, before the war, with the prince from Valir being the 'crown prince.' I don't know if the Crown Prince had more power than the other five princes, or whether they were just more respected," he added, casting his teacher a glance that hopefully conveyed, "please explain?" in body language. "But most princes, at least, ruled over one city state and its surrounding territory. Five of the princes still rule the Geists, but ever since the War, Valir had been without its prince, the Crown Prince."

Histeol shrugged sheepishly. "I couldn't decide on a government," he said, "so I picked one at random. So, the Fey. I grew up in a Fallen household, so the Fey are sort of weird, at least to me. In Fallen households, the eldest member of the family holds sway over the younger ones, and power is pretty evenly stratified based on your age." He smiled. "Okay, maybe not necessarily in my household, my sister's sort of a loose cannon, but in most Fallen families, us young people defer to our elders. This is reflected in the government of Cassiel's Watch and the Winged Isle, which are ruled by a Council of Elders made up of Arch Regents. Fey society is almost totally opposite, though. The Fey government is made up of an even mix of all different ages instead of just the eldest. The idea is to get as many different perspectives as possible, whereas Fallen are only interested in the most informed perspectives of their race." Teo paused. When had he stopped being a Fallen? When had Fallen become them? Probably around the time I met Prometheus, he realized. "Fey want as many perspectives as possible," he repeated, trying to pick up his train of thought where it had left off. "Even the perspectives of the young are valued in their society and their government. They see all peoples as being equal. They'll only act if ninety-five percent or more of their council agree to act. It seems to have worked pretty well for them--the Fey are an old culture that's managed to weather just about everything every other race has ever thrown at them."

"I picked Imps because I'm an Imp," Anchriesel said with a shrug. He honestly didn't care much either way--he'd never felt himself to be much of an Imp or much of anything else. I'm me, and nothing else, he thought. But hey, he had to pick one race, and he might as well pick his own, right? "Most Imps belong to groups called 'cartels,' which are a sort of combination family and business enterprise. Cartels are led by bosses, and they hold the most power in Imp society. Second to them are the elected mayors, who hold all of the official power. Mayors who annoy cartel bosses will quickly find themselves voted out of office, though," he added. "So bosses really are more powerful than mayors. This isn't to say that Mayors have no power, though. Ten years into the War, when Above opened its second portal above the Crown and began firebombing in earnest, the Demons held a Rallying to bring the people of Below into the war. It was Imp Mayors who convinced the Warden of Snowgarden to join the War. Litches brought a lot of resources to bear on the side of the Nightmares. Maybe the cartels put pressure on the Mayors, maybe not, but our textbooks usually credit the Mayors with bringing the Litches into the war, not the bosses."

Perigor had been dozing off in class again. He only woke up when the teacher called his name. He glanced at the board and swiftly brought some sluggish memories to bear. "Um, so, uh, governments! Yeah, governments. So! Litches. Uh, I'm picking Litches because, duh, I'm part Litch? And also because all of my friends are either pure Litches or part Litch or whatever. So, Litches are governed by two groups of people, the Councils of elders and the Wardens. Wardens make all of the big decisions, but they need their decisions to be backed up by the council of elders. If a Warden wants to go to war, but the council says 'no can do, bub,' then they can't go to war. But if the council wants to go to war and the Warden says 'haha no, in your dreams,' definitely gonna be no war. Wardens make the decisions, basically, and the Council tells them yay or nay." He struggled to think of something else to say! "Uh, so, there are like, three wardens, the Warden of the South, the Warden of the East, and the Warden of the West. Each Warden operates out of one city, which would be, uh... Snowgarden, Death's Kiss, and Frostfyre respectively, I think?" Man, Prometheus was gonna be disappointed in him if he got that wrong! "Litches signed the Sovereign's Vow, though, so some of the stuff that the Litches do is constrained by that." There, that should do it!
