Otto nodded. "Armageddon it is."

<>

Hm?

<>

.....heh. He'd actually forgotten about that.

Chance, either fortunately or unfortunately, was unaware of Otto's internal conversation with Tenya, and gave a little nod of agreement.

"Armageddon!" he said dramatically. "Pretty soon I'll actually be able to like, get when people make movie references."

"Learn well, young one." Wait, how old was Chance anyway...? Oh well, didn't matter. Otto popped the movie in.

He made a spluttering sound that was half a snort of laughter and patted the seat next to him.

"I'm like, ninety percent certain I'm older than you, a*****e," said Chance, drawing one the pillows towards him, fingers idly pressing into the soft fabric. "Though now that I think about it, I'm not actually certain how old you actually are."

"Why? Cause I look young?" Otto narrowed his eyes, even if he obediently sat where Chance gestured. Otto accepted that he looked younger than he was. It was a fact he'd not beat. "I'm twenty, just so ya know. I'll be twenty one in October, though."

"You don't look young," said Chance mildly, turning his head to look at Otto. "Well," he amended, "I'm not sure what you mean by young, but to me you look at least like you're out of your teens, which, as it turns out, you are, so I was right about that."

He idly twisted the ring on his finger and smiled. "But I was also right about being older than you, though not by much, and not that I particularly care as it is. I just like messing with you."

"Well the feelin' is mutual. Messin' with you is my new hobby." He murmured back, the opening scene beginning. "So how old are you?" He didn't know simple things like this about Chance, and he ought to learn.

Chance tilted sideways, resting his shoulder against Otto's as he made himself comfortable. "I'm not that easily messed with, except apparently when I'm pathetic like this," he said with a snort, but there was amusement in his voice anyway.

He shifted and laced his fingers together around the pillow in his lap. "Twenty-three," he answered mildly. "I mean, I think. My mother told me my birthday was December 19th, so I just go from there, even though I never really saw a birth certificate or anything."

"Like this? Are we forgetting the Disney Night fiasco?" He snorted, leaning lightly against Chance as well.

"Moms usually know best.. when a kid was pushed out of their crotch. Even the crumby ones. It ain't a date they'd make up, I guess." Otto had not been so delicate about that in the least.

"We're not talking about the Disney night fiasco."

He couldn't help the very ungraceful snort of laughter that escaped him at the blatantly indelicate description, Chance lifting a hand to press against his mouth, muffling the sound. "That," he said "sounds ******** awful, holy s**t. Remind me never to ask you about childbirth again."

He exhaled a breath and shook his head. "But, well, I mean, I guess I assume that she knows when she had me, but she was so desperate for drugs most of the time that I'm not even sure she knew I was there half of the time."

He looked at Chance with some amount of pity when he spoke, but hid much of it behind his usual disinterested expression. "Well, I don't know much about drugs.. or babies. Or taking care of babies. Like, at all. I think I only ever seen'em pass by in strollers n' stuff in the city." So he had no input on Chance's life. Or his mother's choices. Only Chance had that kind of intel.

"Kinda the same reason you can't talk to me 'bout childbirth. I know s**t about it. 'Cept for what Mom taught me." Because home schooled kids got to hear every damned subject from their mom. And his mom, despite being busy, had made sure to cover all she could while educating him.

He simply had not been best at keeping up with the reading, or applying, or anything that involved actually memorizing anything she taught. Poor woman.

"Maybe one day yer mom sneezed and you just kinda popped out."

"Neither do I," said Chance with a laugh. "I was never one for kids. I mean, I didn't mind seeing them around, but when it came to taking care of them..." He waved a hand dismissively. "I had no idea what the ******** to do when they asked me to watch the younger boys at the home, I just sorta stuck them all in a room and read books to them."

Chance wrinkled his nose. "Gross," he said pointedly, but he was snickering anyway, eyes flickering over the scene on the screen in front of him. "I sincerely, sincerely hope that was not the case, otherwise everything I taught myself about health is very, very wrong."

He lapsed into silence for a few minutes, watching the opening play out.

"You ever wish you had a different mother?" Chance asked, after a moment, in a tone that indicated simple curiosity, rather than regret.

"Hm..." A different mother? A father, yes. Easily. But his mom he'd had a strained relationship with, but not a non existent one. He'd loved his mother, which was why when she had less and less time or patience for him? He'd been heartbroken.

"No.." He murmured honestly, softly. "I just wanted her to care about me a little more.. and maybe defend me against my dad. But she never did."

He gave a small nod at this, Chance's thumb smoothing over the arrow-shaped ring on his finger in idle gestures.

"Do you think she loved you?" he asked softly, almost absently, his gaze not quite focused on Otto.

Otto flinched. Chance was hitting buttons that Otto didn't like to deal with. Answers he wasn't sure he wanted to know. He frowned at the screen, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his shirt.

"I...." He hesitated, "I dunno. Maybe?" He just didn't know. Sometimes, it seemed like she did. Sometimes there was kindness, and hints that she genuinely wanted to see him happy or thrive. But most of the time, whenever he reached out, all he got was her back and her voice saying with irritation 'Not now, Otto'.

He'd stopped reaching out, after a while.
