Vyrtem shook his head, chuckling. "Now I'm not so sure about that. I'm sure he could have. If I'm just getting started, I can't imagine what a lifetime of experience could get you."
He nodded his head softly. "I'm sure you're right. He was probably capable of incredible things. He certainly is storied to be an incredible Jedi, and an even more unbelievable Sith."
Vyrtem wondered what secrets awaited him in the further tomes, and marveled that he'd come this far as far as his mastery of Tutaminis in such a short time. As impatient as he'd been, he honestly hadn't expected to come so far in so little time.

"Well, look at the time.. I'm sorry, friend, but it's time to close up shop."
Vyrtem nodded and began to gather the books back up.
The old man waved a hand. "No, no. I've got this. I'm sure there are things you'd rather be doing, aren't there?"
Vyrtem nodded. "Yes sir. Thank you very much for all your help. Without you, I'd never have found Darth Trax' books. I'd probably still be beating my head against a much less useful wall."
"I'm sure you'd have found something worth your time. But I'm always happy to help. When I was younger, I was fascinated with Darth Trax. He was one of my favorite subjects."

Vyrtem smiled. "Well, I can definitely understand why. He's a fascinating person. I can't wait to read the rest of his work."
"Well, don't worry too much about the future. Sometimes we need to focus on the here and now in order to make the future a more likely scenario." Be mindful of the future, but never lose sight of what you already have."
Vyrtem nodded. It was good advice. "Yes sir. I'll try to be mindful of the present as well. Thank you again for everything."
He waved a hand. "Not at all. Now go practice. I'm sure you'll get a handle on it soon enough."

Vyrtem smiled and nodded. "Yes sir. I was just taking a break." Vyrtem left the library and went back to his room, where he sat down and began meditating on what exactly he was going to do. He had a plan, and he'd have to see if it worked, but he wanted to make sure he had all his space ducks in a row. Meditating on the subject of how exactly he was planning on doing this, he hoped, would make it easier to practice the visualization when time came to try it out. Finally, he'd gotten his head around it, but he was mentally drained and decided that he should probably sleep before continuing his training any further.

He dreamed, that night, of his family once again. This time, they were sitting around the house, and his father was getting ready to go on deployment for a while. Vyrtem didn't want him to go, but understood that it was his job. His duty to protect the people that couldn't fight for themselves. Vyrtem helped him clean and polish his armor, and then watched as he dismantled and maintained his heavy blaster, which was a many-barreled, rotating monster that was carried low and and fired a barrage of blaster bolts and was even capable of firing rockets and plasma bolts. It was a marvelous machine, and Vyrtem was always there when his father cleaned it. He could never get enough of that weapon.

Vyrtem awoke with a warmth in his body and a smile on his face. It had been a long time since he'd been happy, he realized, but this newest pursuit of power had made him just so. It was hard to explain, but he felt like he actually had a purpose in life now, and he was able to focus on something real instead of some vague idea of what a Sith should be. Vyrtem would become the perfect Sith; one who could stand against any foe and could survive any challenge. He would become a powerful warrior, and he would make them pay for embarrassing him like that. He would never be treated like a fool again. Let them come; he would be ready.

Vyrtem woke up and readied himself for some practice before breakfast. He took a deep breath and focused his energies with a little meditation in the sunlight, in order to prepare himself for the trial ahead. The pain in his chest had completely disappeared --this was a training droid, after all-- and he felt rejuvenated after both his sleep and his meditation. He allowed himself a few hours of meditation before he made ready to continue. With a resigned breath, he woke up the droid and took his place a few feet away. "Shoot."

Vyrtem spent hours trying out his new method of making this technique work, with some limited amount of success. He was either getting used to the pain or getting somewhere in the process of absorbing damage, but he wasn't entirely sure which way he was leaning on that. He very clearly was not quite to proficiency, but he was getting there. With a little more work, and a little more patience, he would be quite alright at it. He broke for lunch and ate heartily, feeling content with his progress so far. When he returned to his room, he practiced his visualizations a little bit more, and made somewhat more progress.

The way his visualization worked was thus; he imagined that the blaster bolt was not simply sinking into his skin, but instead contacting it and flowing over his skin, dispersing and being absorbed over the whole surface area rather than being taken in directly. This was apparently working, and he was slowly able to focus this image into a functioning technique. He spent hours working on it and actually lost track of time, as the next time he noticed the light outside was in the early morning of the next day, as the sun was beginning to rise and bring the sky back to life.

He did not mind that he had lost time, though. He had gained proficiency and a deeper understanding. He broke for breakfast and returned to his room to practice some more, ignoring the snickering side glances that he had gotten used to receiving. He didn't let it bother him anymore. He'd show them all eventually. Eventually. He meditated on that fact for a while and made plans for his future before he lined himself back up with the droid, preparing for pain in the name of science. He took a steadying breath. "Shoot."

The pain did not come. He was confused. He had blinked. Maybe he'd missed the shot. "Shoot." This time his eyes were open, and he still could not believe what he saw. The blaster bolt went straight into his chest, and he even involuntarily flinched, but he still did not feel it. He couldn't believe it. It had worked. He whooped aloud and shook his fists in the air, stricken dumb and brought to dizzying amounts of excitement as he celebrated his victory. He took time to confirm his experiences were not merely flukes. He repeated the test for hours, laughing every time the droid shot him. He blocked the shots with his hands, his feet, even his head on a few occasions, and felt absolutely nothing. He'd done it! He pounded his chest and raised his fists in the air like the victorious warrior in a martial arts match. Completely ecstatic.

Vyrtem was excited to proceed to the next level of his training. But first... "Oh, sithspit!" How long had it been? He was supposed to have returned this stuff yesterday! Oh crap. Oh well... He looked on the brightside. At least he'd be able to see Valya again. He smiled at the prospect and suddenly things didn't seem quite so bad. She was probably one of the only people in the entire Academy who didn't know who he was, and thus was a vast leap over any of his contemporaries as far as being preferable company.

Vyrtem gathered his supplies and almost ran to the equipment counter to get to it before it closed. He'd made it, but only just. The whole area was abandoned and nobody was at the desk. He looked around and set his things on the counter, taking a deep breath and preparing to wait. Eventually, Valya came out of the back room, focusing on the tablet in her hand and scrolling idly through the options that she was viewing. She finally noticed someone standing at the counter.
"Oh! Um. Hi. Sorry. You scared me. I thought everybody was gone."
"Well, I just couldn't stay away, I guess."
She giggled, somewhat awkwardly and looked down. "Oh, yeah. Your stuff. You know, we were just about to sic the guards on you for not bringing these back here." Her tone made it clear that she was probably joking.

Vyrtem had to say that her laugh had a way of making him smile. He chuckled and nodded, scratching the back of his head. "Well, then it's a good thing I can bring them back. Any way I can get the bounty taken off my head? The constant observation through my window is making me nervous."
She covered her mouth when she laughed again, shaking her head. "I'll see if there's anything I can do about that." She picked up her tablet and began searching for something. "It's... Vyrtem, right?"
"Yep. That's me. The stupid Sith. Should I be flattered that you remembered my name?"
She giggled again. "I don't know. Should you?"

Oh no. She'd heard. He raised his finger and prepared to attempt to explain what had happened, and couldn't think of anything to say. He finger drooped. "Oh... You heard about... That... Did you?"
She cut him off with a disarming smile. "Yeah... Kinda hard not to." She scrunched her nose playfully "But... It's not that bad."
Vyrtem sighed loudly "Yeah... But-"
She smiled again and he got caught up on his own tongue again. "Don't worry. Boys will be boys."
