Still feeling a little edgy from the shrieking rabbit earlier, Maggie nevertheless follows the sound of the breaking branch-but cautiously. She remembers the stories of disappearances from the winter, and it might not be beneath a wandering wolf to take a rabbit, and it would be easier for such a beast to break a branch.

After about two steps it occurs to her to ask what on earth she would do with a wolf if she found one, and she has to chuckle at herself. Just a fox, probably.

The squire had heard nothing, of course.

But he bit his lip and turned over a leaf, revealing a perfectly-pressed fox print. Ah, so that spirit - it had told the truth after all. Though what kind of fox hid its own path, Lucterius didn't know. Lucterius was indeed headed in the correct direction. He smiled. "Well spotted," he told the boy, who nodded and turned toward the print's direction. Lucterius paused, thinking of the sure smile he'd win from Fiordelisia when he told her of the fox's trickery and that fickle spirit - she had watched his eyes narrow often as he discussed the Old Ways. Surely he'd see laughter from her yet! The boy made an uncertain sound.

"Shall I record it, sir?" he asked. His name was Gareth, Lucterius remembered - he was quite competent, if his every step shook and his voice quivered. He'd gain confidence in time, though. Lucterius smiled.

"There is no time for that. Have my apologies for dallying." He continued striding on, and Gareth followed, his pace quicker than it had been. They had a place to be...

Either due to luck or your own tracking skills you discover a fine hair caught low to the ground on a branch, almost invisible against the mottled loam of the forest floor. This is good evidence of an animal's trail.

You win three points this turn.

You stop to examine a leafless buckthorn shrub covered in eggplant-colored berries. Some of its lower branches have been bent and broken, but these branches appear to have been dead for a long time, so there's no telling when the event occurred. This is poor evidence of an animal's trail, but it's better than nothing.

You win one point this turn.

Ysalone drew the mare to a halt at the sight of the broken branches, an uncharacteristically studious frown crossing her face. She let the reins slide through her fingers as the horse bent down to sniff nonchalantly at the bush. The mare swished her tail once and, apparently bored, began to step away. "Ah, it is something, non?" Ysalone said, a little doubtful herself as they left the bush behind.

Eloise jumped when she saw the man standing in the middle of the woods. She was about to ask him whether he was a friend or foe to the lovely animals of the forest when he pointed away from where she had just walked from. By the time she turned around to speak with him he was gone. A shiver ran up her spine at his sudden disappearance.

Why did this forest have to be so darn spooky?

She continued along her way in the direction the mysterious man, or had he been a spirit, had pointed, hoping to save an animal from certain death. The trees were becoming thicker around her now but there was less underbrush for her dress to get tangled up in. Light barely reached the forest floor now as she wandered into the dark abyss of the forest. Eloise could still hear the shouts of the hunters from deep within the forest.

You have reached a creek. Its narrow length is lined with rocks and moss, and bright autumn leaves meander downstream, turning languidly in the current. As you draw nearer you notice faint markings in the mud between two rocks: fox prints, almost entirely worn away by time. They aren't recent, but knowing the animal's preferred path is still somewhat useful.

You win one point this turn.

As Told By Ginger

You pause for a moment to get your bearings and cannot resist taking in the breathtaking beauty of the autumnal wood. Even with the weather overcast the vivid scarlets and yellows of the foliage are as rich as dyed velvet against the gray sky and the black trunks of the trees. Gazing into the infinite reaches of the forest is like looking into stained glass…

When you turn back around an enormous fox with a luxurious pelt is standing directly in your path, watching you. Its eyes seem amused, somehow. It quickly dashes off into the undergrowth before you can react — but at least now you have a pretty good idea of where you should be heading.

You win four points this turn.

Gabriel smiled, gently touching the rose that grew from within the stag's skull. Ah, there was such beauty in death. So few truly understood it. ...but now which way should he go? He stooped, beginning to search for signs of the soft footsteps again.

Valerian snorted as Thorne furrowed his brow; he certainly was not having his best day today, it would seem. It appeared whatever he was trying to track was having a game of its own. He huffed, shooting a glare at the deer's smug expression, and began to gently pick around for a different sign of some sort of trail.

Mist began rising from the damp forest floor not too long ago; now it's all around you, muting the autumn colors behind a ghostly bluish veil. You can still see well enough to stick to the path you've chosen, but as you walk or ride on you begin to catch glimpses of something white showing through the sparse yellow leaves of a buckthorn hedge.

You investigate.

Unfortunately it is only the skeleton of a large stag, stripped of flesh but otherwise almost perfectly intact; time has bleached its bones to the stark paleness that distracted you. A single wild rose has grown up through one of its eye sockets.

You do not win or lose any points this turn.
